3 Management Welcome 2016 is the 40th anniversary of the Metcalfe Golf Club and we would like to celebrate with our members this season. We are extremely proud of the history and evolution of the Metcalfe Golf Club. Looking back, many of the values and features that make Metcalfe what it is today were instilled by the Welch family during the early years of the Metcalfe Golf Club. A commitment to constant improvement is something that has always been a high priority as demonstrated by the numerous expansions and upgrades to the golf course and facilities over the recent years. Gord and his team strive to improve course conditions each and every season. The fantastic food served by Tony and his team at Hickories dates back to the homemade doughnuts and sandwiches Tom s mother Jean used to serve golfers in the late 70 s and early 80 s. The friendly service and family atmosphere that exist at Metcalfe Golf today have been the club s trademarks for the past 40 years. Our service staff led by Gasper, Richard, Lindsay, Wyatt and ourselves is challenged to maintain this proud tradition. We have been extremely lucky to have tremendous loyalty from our members, many of whom have been playing Metcalfe for over 10, 20 and some even over 30 years. Our Club Captains and event organizers have put together a terrific program of member tournaments, events and leagues for the 2016 season. In the pages that follow you will learn about all these activities. We highly encourage you to participate in these events as we believe they are a large part of what makes your membership at Metcalfe special. We are very much looking forward to our 40th Anniversary Season and the years to come, however we are very proud of our past and are happy we were able to share some of the highlights with you. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to make this golf season more enjoyable for you. See you at the Club!!! 7 Superintendent s Report Junior & Family Program I would like to welcome everyone back for another golf season. Over the past few years several new species of insects and weeds have encroached on the golf course. The first was European chafer (aka grubs). We started treating greens for this insect in 2014 and this year we will treat greens, tees and some fairway and rough areas. Next was the emerald ash borer that attacks ash trees. For the first time this past winter we concentrated on removing ash trees and have removed over 100. You really don t know how dead a tree is until you cut it down, but over 50% of these trees would have been safety hazards and the other 50% were dying quickly There is no cure for the ash tree once it is infected with the borer. The last new species is wild parsnip. Our trimming programs seem to be keeping this invasion in check. This weed takes about 2 years to establish and then starts spreading. So long as we keep trimming all of these areas, it should not get a hold. All of the trimming staff is now trained to spot wild parsnip and to report it to me immediately. These are all additional programs put in place to protect the golfer and the golf course. There will be some extra tree clean up this spring but we will get it done ASAP. I hope you have a happy, long and safe season. See you at the club. Both programs are geared towards participation and include instruction, activities and events. Junior Memberships: Incentives when friends join together or parents purchase a membership, game package or league membership. Wednesday 9-hole Junior League: Structured program with two introductory clinics. Open to members & non-members. Family Programs Sponsored by FLAGSTICK GOLF MAGAZINE 50% junior green fees (18 and under) 9 or 18-hole course. 20 Playing it Forward for Wishes Join Metcalfe Golf on July 24th for Playing It Forward for Wishes, our annual fundraising event in support of Make-A-Wish Eastern Ontario, sponsored by Innovapost. This event teaches children the concept of Paying It Forward in our community. Parents and their children enjoy a fun day of golf and activities, while raising funds to grant another child s wish. Parents and their children can choose from: * 3, 5, or 9 holes of golf * Enjoy Fun Day activities on location throughout the day * BBQ for the family * Prizes and awards presented at closing ceremonies This event helps instill the Paying It Forward mindset into children at a young age. Children who have participated in the past have gained an understanding of how fortunate they are while gaining awareness about what they can do to make a difference in the lives of other children. In 2014 we raised $11,400 and granted 1 Wish, in 2015 we raised $41,000 and granted 4 wishes. For more information please visit 18
