3 EXCITING BLEND OF Veterans and Newcomers TO PROPEL SEMINOLE MEN S GOLF TEAM IN Head coach Trey Jones enters his second season at Florida State looking to blend a veteran group of returning golfers with an exciting group of newcomers into a competitive team as he continues to mold the Seminoles into one of the nation s up-and-coming programs. With seven returning players who have played a great deal of golf at Florida State and three first-year players who have competed at the highest levels of golf during their careers, Jones has assembled a talented group of golfers who will all battle for playing time as the team continues to strive to become competitive in both the ACC and nationally. Florida State was one of the most improved teams in the ACC during Jones first season in The Seminoles earned eight top 10 team finishes and improved their overall team stroke average by more than one full stroke as compared to the 2003 season. The Seminoles displayed improvement in every area of the program in 2004 and must continue that development for the team to reach its goals. I have said many times that I inherited a great group of young men to coach at Florida State, said Jones. We do a great deal of team building exercises with each team and this year will be no different. The returning guys are looking forward to leading the newcomers and the newcomers are looking forward to the challenges that are ahead of them. Florida State s roster includes four veteran seniors who have played in a combined total of nearly 100 career tournaments including 10 ACC Championships. Those four players Matt Adcock, Alan Beers, Rusty Mosley and Mark Sestilio have become the cornerstones of Jones building process and will be the leaders of this year s team. Add in sophomore Bradley Ruch who ranked as one of the top freshmen in the ACC last year and the Seminoles will field a competitive starting lineup during the 2005 season. Florida State s incoming class which includes junior Jacob Davis and talented freshmen Jonas Blixt and Song Jeon will only serve to increase the competition for playing time throughout the season. As a trio Davis, Blixt and Jeon combine to form one of the top recruiting classes in the recent history of the program. The time that it takes our newcomers to adapt to their new lives will determine when the depth of our team will improve, said Jones. Each of them touts an impressive resume and expects to make an impact this season. I am quite positive that the qualifiers will become more intense for each position. Mosley and Adcock, Florida State s most experienced golfers, will be the team leaders in Both golfers were the only two Seminoles to play in all 11 events during the fall and spring seasons and have played in a combined total of 52 events. Mosley is Florida State s top returning golfer for the season and has competed in 29 tournaments during his career. Mosley led the Seminoles in stroke average (74.00), rounds scored at par or better (seven) and low round score (67) while tying for the team lead in total rounds (21) and tournaments played (seven) during the spring 2004 season. Mosley was the Seminoles top finisher in a team-leading four of seven events during the spring of his junior season and was their top finisher in five of 11 events during the fall and spring seasons combined. Rusty could have a breakout season. He has shown signs of competing at a high level but has lacked the confidence to shoot a very low number, said Jones. Rusty will need to lead by example and I expect him to do that. His personality is one that makes road trips enjoyable and entertaining. FSU has only had five golf coaches in its history and Rusty has had three different coaches. He easily could be looked at as an integral part of setting the foundation for the future of our program. Adcock, who has competed in 23 events during his three-year Seminole career, will be a candidate for All- ACC honors along with Mosley. He has led the Seminoles in stroke average in three of the last four seasons (fall 2002, spring 2003 and fall 2003) including a average during the spring of Adcock established his career-low score Inset: Matt Adcock is an academic All-American who will graduate with honors in mechanical engineering. Mark Sestilio played in a career-high seven events as a junior. for a single round (68) and earned his top career finish at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate during the fall of Adcock ranked third on the team in stroke average (74.67), third with 14 scores of 75 or below and fourth with two rounds of par or better during the spring 2004 season. Matt has assured me that he will play well this season, said Jones. Matt does not make comments that he does not intend to back up. I am looking forward to Matt s senior season for several reasons but none any more than seeing what his definition of playing well is. Matt understands what good golf is and he sets high standards for himself. Another pair of seniors Alan Beers and Mark Sestilio earned their way into the Seminoles starting lineup last spring and will look to hold onto their positions in Beers returned from injury to play in the final four events of the spring including his second career ACC Championship while Sestilio played in a single-season career-high seven events during the fall 2003 and spring 2004 seasons. Beers earned his way back into the Seminoles starting lineup during the spring of 2004 and enters his final collegiate year looking to be a mainstay in Florida State s starting five. He earned a pair of top-25 finishes to close out the 2004 spring season and was the Seminoles leading finisher at the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate. Beers has carded six single-round scores of 71 or better during his Seminole career and earned his career-best tournament score with a 218 at the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate during the spring of Alan was definitely the most improved person on last year s team and a spark plug at the ACC Championships, said Jones. Alan needs to get off to a good start so he can get in a groove and solidify a spot in the lineup. He has the personal characteristics to be a leader on this team and I am looking for him to play a major role in our team s success. Sestilio also enters the season playing the best golf of his career as he makes a push to stay in the Seminoles starting lineup. He has demonstrated the ability to play as a regular member of the starting five during his senior season as Florida State looks to make improvements in every area of the program. Sestilio finished his junior season with a stroke average. His best career finish (tied for 10th) came at the fall 2003 Kiawah Island Intercollegiate and he enjoyed a strong outing at the spring 2003 Seminole Intercollegiate when he established personal best for low round (70) and low tournament score (218). Mark has worked very hard on his putting and the improvement is noticeable, said Jones. He listens very well and takes a good mental game plan to each round. He is a consistent person and you know he will keep his cool under adverse conditions. Mark will need to carry more confidence to the first tee to shoot a low number in order to elevate his game. Ruch, the most surprising player on the Seminoles roster in 2004, returns after a strong summer looking to cement his spot in the Seminoles starting lineup. He played in one event during his first fall and earned his way into the starting lineup for all seven events during the spring of Ruch finished third on the team for the year with a stroke average and ranked fifth among all prominent freshmen in the ACC with his stroke average during the fall and spring seasons. He posted his career-best single-round score of 69 during the second round of the spring 2004 Atlanta Intercollegiate while his career-best 54-hole tournament score of 218 came at the Gator Invitational. Ruch was one of only three Seminoles (also Mosley and Adcock) who played in all seven events during the season. As a freshman he ranked first on the team with 16 rounds scored at 75 or below, second on the team with a stroke average, second on the team with five rounds at par or better and his career-best 69 at the Atlanta Intercollegiate was the second best single-round score among the Seminole team members during the season. Ruch led the team as he counted 20 of his 21 rounds played for the season (.952 percent) towards the team score and was the only player who had at least 20 rounds counted during the season. Bradley Ruch is definitely a late bloomer who wants to learn and has a desire to win, said Jones. It would not surprise me to see Bradley go from walk-on to low stroke average to team captain before his career is completed. He always thinks team first and you know when he walks off the course that he competed on every shot. 4 PREVIEW

5 FSU S ROSTER INCLUDES FOUR VETERAN SENIORS WHO HAVE PLAYED IN A COMBINED TOTAL OF NEARLY 100 CAREER TOURNAMENTS INCLUDING 10 ACC CHAMPIONSHIPS. Gonzalo Ibarraran and Adam Wallace, both juniors, have the ability and will have the chance to play their way into the Seminoles starting lineup. Both golfers earned playing time last season and will add to the long list of experienced competitors vying for playing time in Ibarraran earned his way into the Seminoles starting lineup for the first two tournaments of the fall 2003 season and played the best golf of his career at the Mason Rudolph Championship that season. He tied his career best for low round scored (73), best career 36-hole score (142), best tournament scored vs. par (+5) and best career finish (tied for 26) in the event. He earned Florida State s top individual finish as the team earned an 11th place finish in the team standings. Gonzalo s offseason will play a major role in his ability to compete for a position this fall, said Jones. He did not drive the ball well last season and that will be the key for his improvement. He has the short game to keep him in most rounds. Wallace is another of the seven returning golfers for the Seminoles who has experience as a member of the Seminoles starting lineup. He has played in 11 tournaments as a member of the Seminoles starting lineup during his first two years at Florida State and played in his first career ACC Championship during the spring of Wallace has carded his career low of 70 twice during his career -- during the second round of the fall 2003 Cleveland Golf Collegiate and the second round of the spring 2004 Gator Invitational while his career-best score for a three-round tournament came at the spring 2004 Gator when he carded a 223. Wallace played in three tournaments as a member of Florida State s starting lineup during the spring of He tied his career best for a single round as he carded a 70 in the second round of the Gator Invitational and finished with a careerbest 54-hole total of 223. Adam played an active summer schedule to allow him to gain confidence and experience, said Jones. I look for Adam to see improvement with age as he is improving with his demeanor on the course. Adam could be our most improved player by season s end. Jones enters the season with the luxury of choosing from an outstanding group of newcomers who all have the ability to break into Florida State s top five at the start of the season. Davis, the only one of the three newcomers on this year s team with previous collegiate playing experience, won the Division I NJCAA Championship with a four-round total of 285 in May of 2004 in leading Brevard Community College to a third place finish in the team standings. Davis earned All-America honors during both of his junior college seasons -- first-team as a sophomore and secondteam as a freshman. Jake shows up to play every round, said Jones. At one point in time he had 11 straight top 5 finishes at Brevard Community College. I look for Jake to make an early impact on our lineup. Blixt, a freshman, will have the opportunity to compete immediately for playing time in Seminoles lineup. He was a member of the Swedish national boy s team from and joined the men s amateur team in both 2003 and Blixt was the medalist at the Swedish national stroke championship in 2003 and ranked fifth in his youth division in Jonas has proven that his good rounds are very good. As a member of the Swedish National Team he finished second in the University of Tennessee s fall tournament last season. Jeon is a newcomer to the Seminole team who will also compete for a spot in the lineup as a freshman. He has the ability and skill to become a member of Florida State s starting lineup from the first day of practice after earning All- America honors twice during his junior career. When Song settles into FSU and gets into a personal routine he will become a very consistent collegiate player, said Jones. He drives the ball so well that it is difficult for him to make a big number and that, in turn, sets his game up for several birdies. He has the record and confidence to compete with the top players in our league. Florida State annually competes against the best teams and top players in the nation and the season will be no exception. The Seminoles competed against 14 of the top 20 teams in the nation last season and will face a greater number of the best teams in men s golf during the upcoming season. I want us to play against the top competition, on the best golf courses and in the warmest weather possible, said Jones. We will expose our players to the competition and conditions they will see in the NCAA Championships on a consistent basis. Florida State made tremendous strides during Jones first season as the Seminoles head coach. Expect those strides to continue this season as the staff and players continue building itself into a national contender. The Seminoles experienced veterans and outstanding crop of newcomers have the program pointed in the right direction for golfing success in Tallahassee. Summing up the upcoming year, Jones said: We need for the returning players to give the newcomers time to adapt. If we can bring them on slowly then our results will be consistent. If we are forced to play three or four newcomers then you may see some good and bad performances early on. Either way we are a better team than we were at this time last season.
