3 INTRODUCTION Congratulations! You are the proud owner of this booklet, which means you are probably participating in the 2016 edition of the Moteq Re-engineering Challenge. This year, just like all the other years, you will battle for infinite fame, bragging rights and a trophy to take home. In order to do this you will have to make a contraption that beats the others in a game many of you know. But you will only have minimal resources to do this. Sweat, tears and blood will be shed in order to make, hopefully, the best contraption. But if you do not win, you will probably have had a fun weekend anyway and a lot of reasons to complain why this challenge was unfair and that you should have won. In this booklet you will find all the information you need for your participation in the challenge, and if you cannot find the information you need, you can find someone of the organization and ask them. The committee of 2016 wishes you the best of luck and fun. So have a great weekend! 4

6 THE ASSIGNMENT For this year s Moteq Re-engineering Challenge teams are assigned to create a moving contraption that can challenge another team in a duel in which they have to try to move a ball in the opponents goal. The moving contraption will have to be build completely from scrap that will be provided. The team that scores the most goals within 2.5 minutes wins the match. The winner of the tournament will be awarded a trophy and eternal fame. There will also be a special price for the team with the most original design. 8
7 THE CHALLENGE This year s challenge is to build a contraption that can play a game of football. The goal of the game is to score the most points in a one versus one game within a certain timeframe. When a round starts the teams are forbidden to make physical contact with their device or ball as well as exerting any forms of force on it. The device will have to be controlled from a distance by using either a wireless or wired connection, its up to the teams to decide what suits their needs best. The device may only be constructed from the scrap provided by the scrapheap committee. 30V 1A max (Westzaal) power supplies will be provided to be able to power your contraptions. 7.1 THE STAGE The scrapheap football game is similar to a normal game of football. Each player should be able to defend their own goal while also being able to score in the opponents goal. Since this is a two-player fight, most rules from normal football can be neglected. A schematic of the playfield can be found in figure 1. The field has a width and a length of 3 and 5 meters respectively. The field comprises of two goals for each team to defend which width is 2 meters. One beach-ball will be used as means for the teams to make a goal. 9
2m 2m 3m 5m Figure 1, playfield 7.2 RULES Each round of the game will take 2.5minutes in which two teams play against each other on one field. In the limited time teams will have to try to score as many points as possible by playing the ball into the oponents goal. The team which has scored the most points within the set time-frame wins the round. A team however can be disqualified when the judge thinks it has misbehaved during a round. During a round there should be adheared to the following set of rules: Only one contraption per team may be in the field at the time. The judge decides when a round starts and ends 10
One round has a duration of 2 and a half minutes. if there however is a tie, the round will not be extended during the pool phase. However, during the semi- final/final round time will be extended untill one of the teams has made an additional goal. At the start of the round the contraption will be placed in their respective goals. It is outside the arena and will touch the line. During the pool phase, each team will have two matches. The judge randomly picks teams that will have to play a match. Teams are not allowed to leave parts of their contraption behind to hinder/block the oponent. The contraptions may not hold the ball trapped. The ball should not be enclosed by the contraption, and should be accessible by an opponent of 40X40X60 cm. The contraption may not destroy the ball. If the contraption punctures the ball a team immediately loses the match. The contraptions should be controled remotely, by wire or wireless, human contact with the devices is not allowed. Teams are allowed though to reset their contraption at the start of each round and when there has been scored. Destroying the opponents contraption is not allowed. You can however make slight physical contact. But if the judge thinks you are forcefully destroying your oponents contraption you can be disqualified. 11
The contraptions should confirm to the following maximum dimensions: (0.4x0.4x0.6):(WxHxD) [m]. Moving parts should also fit within that dimension. Each team can make use of a single power supply with a maximum output of 30V 1A with adjustable voltage as well as current limiting. Other rules and regulations that will have to be adhered to during the Moteq Re-engineering challenge can be found in chapter rules and regulation subsection challenge. 12
7.3 TOURNAMENT The tournament consists of a pool-phases after which there will be a semi-final round ending with one final round determining the winner of the 2016 s Moteq reengineering challenge. The best team of each pool will go to the semi-final. The best team from Pool-1 will play against the best team of Pool-2 in the semi-final-1, where the best team of Pool-3 will play against the best team of Pool-4 in quater-final-2. A simple schematic of the tournament is shown in figure 2. Pool-1 Pool-2 Pool-3 Pool-4 Semi-Final-1 Semi-Final-2 winner winner Final 13 Winner- Moteq re-engineering challenge 2016 Figure 2, tournament
7.4 THE ORIGINALITY PRIZE Criterion: originality. The jury will judge all contraptions as well based on a combination of physical appearance, ingenuity, tomfoolery, and awesomeness in its broadest sense. In the mind of these characteristics, the jury will choose one team to grant the originality prize. 8 RESISTOR COLOR CODE: 9 RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. DEFINITIONS 1.1. Event: Moteq re-engineering challenge Electrical Engineering
1.2. Organization: The committee who organized the Moteq re-engineering challenge Construction hall: W-Zaal; room where the construction of the devices takes place Contraption: The apparatus a participating group constructed Team: Group of 3 to 6 people who participate in the Moteq re-engineering challenge 1.6. Scrapheap: place where all the electronics scrap is gathered 1.7. Challenge: test and judgment of the constructed device by the Jury 1.8. Jury: the Moteq re-engineering challenge committee 1.9. Goal: A structure or area into which players endeavor to propel a ball in order to score points Start Signal: Jury will give a signal when next game starts 2. GENERAL 2.1. During the event a device is constructed, that follows the regulations as put by the organization 2.2. Participants shall always try to avoid dangerous and life threatening situations In case of a conflict the organization will always have the last word The organization has the right to apply changes to the rules and regulations. 15
3. REGULATIONS WITH RESPECT TO THE CONSTRUCTION HALL 3.1. In the construction hall eating and drinking is not allowed During lunch and dinner time, the participants are not allowed to be in the construction hall The construction hall will be locked during lunch and dinner time Electronics that will not be used by the team anymore should be returned to the scrapheap Only scrap that is in use by at least one team member is allowed to be at the teams workplace. All other scrap needs to be returned immediately If a team builds up a reserve of scrap they will get a warning. They then have 15 minutes to return all there not currently in use scrap to the scrapheap. If the committee is not satisfied with the returning of unused scrap, scrap of the group, including the scrap there are currently working with and their contraption so far will be thrown on the scrapheap. This is necessary because there are 13 teams and a limited amount of available scrap. 16
3.7. Some of the devices which are in the scrapheap have been proven to cause short circuits, so the participants are strictly forbidden to use the wall sockets for their devices, also during construction and testing. Only the voltage supplies in the construction hall or supplies that have been thoroughly tested and were given by the scrapheap committee may be used. Batteries (if scavenged or supplied) may also be used Tools from the w-zaal that may be used are: Power Supply, Oscilloscope, Signal Generator, Multimeter, Soldering Iron and the Computer. Any additional tools can be brought from home.
