3 "Nothng great was ever acheved wthout enthusasm." Ralph Waldo Emerson I was remnded of ths quote by Emerson whle watchng numerous swm team practces ths summer and peekng at the actvtes at the summer golf camp. Wthout a doubt, I had a close encounter" wth enthusasm durng these events. Chldren come about enthusasm naturally; whle f you're lke me, I often need a jump-start n ths area. Ths obvously doesn't apply to our staff when workng wth our chldren (and grandchldren and greatgrandchldren). It s nsprng to watch Randy, the pool staff and coaches work wth our kds. Lkewse, you are unlkely to fnd any better or more enthusastc teachers of golf than Mark or Vern, when they are workng wth asprng young golfers, and Ator and Juan whle workng wth future tenns champons. We all know t takes a specal gft to be able to work well wth chldren; these folks have t and we are lucky to have them here. So, ths month, I wanted to sngle-out the staff that nteracts day-to-day wth our kds. I cannot possbly name you all, but you know who you are. 4 Welcome to the heat of summer. It s hot and dry wth no sgn of ran, the rver water supply has been scarce and the wnds have been brutal! But the golf course, however, s comng around and startng to fll n very well. We are tryng to level some ruts and holes out n the farway areas, seed, and patch thn spots. As we go through these we wll mark them out as ground under repar untl they heal n. We are tryng several dfferent seeded Bermudas n order to see f one s better for us and our condtons on the property. The rye grass around the greens and on the tees s transtonng out and dyng. We wll be gong through these areas and scalpng them down to let the Bermuda come out. We have notced sand bottle usage has slowed down so please encourage your fellow members to keep fllng n dvots. I beleve ths wll help our heal tme and provde a better surface n the farways. Also we need to remnd everyone to please fx the ball marks on the greens. There s stll a lot that s not beng repared. I recently met wth Dr. Ryan Goss, who s the Assstant Professor of Turfgrass Scence at New Mexco State Unversty. We dscussed the turfgrass qualty at El Paso Country Club and I would lke to share the followng letter from Dr. Goss, dated May 23, 2011, wth you. Dear Mr. Phelps Davee & Mr. Andy Khatam: Thank you for the opportunty to vst wth you regardng the turfgrass qualty at El Paso CC on May 19, Ths s a summary of our dscusson durng the vst wth you and other members of your staff. I was mpressed wth the nterest to obtan qualty turfgrass by everyone assocated wth the club. Clearly, your membershp has a desre to have qualty playng condtons and to mantan an excellent reputaton n the regon. Ths type of membershp creates an excellent workng envronment. Ths past wnter freeze has created challenges for turfgrass superntendents throughout the regon. The most common problem occurrng has been wnterkll and EPCC s no excepton. Turfgrass wnterkll s the desccaton of turfgrass tssues and storage organs durng prolonged cold and dry perods. These tssues are klled when the remanng water n tssue s pulled out of the plant or when the extreme cold temperatures freeze and rupture plant cells. Wnterkll results n small to large patches of turfgrasses that do not emerge from dormancy or wll ntally greenup but then de. Varous areas of the golf course wll respond dfferently to wnterkll due to dfferences n sol qualty, mosture status, wnd exposure, shade, plant type and general plant health. Common-type bermudagrasses tend to be more prone to wnterkll than other mproved varetes. In addton, the water qualty at EPCC s less than deal for growng turfgrasses. Sodum and other salts n the rrgaton water wll buldup n the sol near the growng ponts of the turfgrass plant untl excessve rans durng the monsoon season move the salts downward. The added salt stress wll worsen the effects of any other major stress lke the recent freeze. Whle there are few management practces that can mnmze the effect of wnterkll, the results are margnal. Once the freeze perod arrves, changes n management cannot alter the effects. An rrgaton event durng a freeze wll only worsen the symptoms. Allowng turfgrasses to transton nto dormancy earler n the prevous fall and proper rrgaton pror to the freeze event are the two most effectve methods to mnmze the wnterkll symptoms. Our somewhat warmer fall slowed the bermudagrass transton to dormancy and unfortunately worsened the wnterkll potental. Based on our dscusson regardng rrgaton pror to the freeze, your turfgrasses should have had adequate, but not excessve, mosture pror to the freeze event. I do not thnk anythng else could have been done to avod wnterkll. To mprove the current condton of the turfgrass, I would recommend doublng your ntrogen fertlzaton rates for the rest of the year to promote the bermudagrass growth and to fll n dead areas. However, drect and ndrect costs wll ncrease from these applcatons. Addtonal ndrect costs nclude hgher labor for fertlzer applcatons and ncreased mowng events; ncreased costs for mantenance on applcator and mowng equpment; and ncreased fuel consumpton. Local reseedng, sprggng, or soddng may be necessary n extremely njured areas. Clearly, the golf course has a varety of bermudagrass cultvars, ncludng some common and mproved hybrd types, throughout the golf course. Durng perods of optmum summer growth, the dfferences n vsual qualty and playablty are less notceable. However, the patchwork of grasses present at the club s vsble now due to dfferental freeze and tolerances of the grasses. Smlarly, you may have notced patches of slghtly dfferent grasses n the puttng greens n sprng and fall. The varous botypes of creepng bentgrass found n Penncross puttng greens become vsble durng early sprng and late fall due to the dfferental cold tolerance of the botypes. Converson of the exstng farways to another bermudagrass cultvar or to seashore paspalum was dscussed as a suggested soluton to the exstng patchwork of grasses and other problems. I am not n favor of attemptng a converson. Whle these other grasses do show promse n cold and salt tolerances, a successful converson would requre substantal constructon and sol replacement. Due to the excellent growng condtons for bermudagrass n El Paso, common bermudagrass s extremely prevalent n the sol and water supples. contnues on page 5... Page 4 Happy 4th of July! July 2011

5 contnued from page 4... Abundant common bermudagrass seed and vegetatve structures exst n any 30+ year old turfgrass stand. Inevtably, common bermudagrass would reappear wthn 5-10 years after any major converson was attempted, regardless of the cultvar or speces planted, wth extremely aggressve technques resultng n restrcted use over several months for several years, a turfgrass manager could expect less than 40% converson nto the exstng turfgrass stand. Whole-sale removal of one to two feet of sol and replacement wth new weed-free sol would have better success, but I would expect common bermudagrass cultvars to reappear wthn 5-6 years. Condtons would lkely return to the present patchwork wthn years. Seashore paspalum does have excellent salt tolerance, but bermudagrass s a close second. Seashore paspalum s a good lastresort turfgrass for extreme sol condtons when bermudagrass does not survve. The condtons at El Paso CC are not at salt levels where seashore paspalum would be requred. Close management of the salt levels n the sol and much-needed monsoon seasons wll allow for success wth bermudagrass at EPCC wth the current water sources. Seashore paspalum does have some drawbacks that make t less desrable for our regon. In research conducted at New Mexco State n Las Cruces, paspalum has a shorter growng season than bermudagrass. Paspalum would greenup one to three weeks later than bermudagrass and would go nto dormancy one to three weeks earler than bermudagrass. Turfgrass qualty of bermudagrass and seashore paspalum are almost dentcal. Some fnd the wnter color of paspalum more objectonable than bermudagrass due to the darker, drab appearance. Common bermudagrass s ever-present and wll eventually appear n bermudagrass grown n El Paso. Currently, there are no herbcdes or methods to control bermudagrass n seashore paspalum. Lastly, few pestcde optons are avalable for seashore paspalum due to the newness of the grass and the low number of stes where ths grass s grown. Research and breedng contnue to progress on seashore paspalum and my opnon may change n the future, but I do not beleve El Paso CC membershp and staff would be pleased wth ts use. Sprng playablty was one concern that was rased durng our dscussons. Whle the envronment of each sprng s dfferent, we tend to have smlar trends n bermudagrass greenup each year. Green tssue wll begn to emerge from dormancy every March or Aprl. However turfgrass growth wll not begn n earnest untl June when sol temperatures are hgh enough for turfgrass growth. Ths pattern s frustratng to all turfgrass managers n the regon and s unavodable. Untl turfgrass plants begn aggressvely growng n June, the farways tend to be thn and wll not support a golf ball. These thn farways are dffcult for some golfers, especally hgh handcappers who often desre more cushon to ncrease ther margn of error for successful golf shots. Breedng efforts have selected bermudagrass cultvars that have slghtly longer growng seasons for our regon. However, a converson to one of these grasses would lkely result n only one to two addtonal weeks of green turf n the sprng and fall. Aggressve turfgrass growth would stll not occur untl June. One method to mprove sprng play qualty s to manage for ncreased amounts of dormant tssue to provde cushon desred. Increasng wnter cushon requres the creaton of addtonal tssue pror to the frst freeze n the fall and mnmzng traffc durng the wnter months. Addtonal plant tssue can be added by ncreasng the mowng heghts pror to the slow-down of growth n the fall. For ths regon, bermudagrass usually slows growth n September. Therefore, mowng heghts would need to be rased n md to late August. Unfortunately, ths wll affect any fall tournaments wth slower farways. Once September rolls around, lttle new tssue wll be created although the bermudagrass remans green untl the frst major frost/freeze. After ths pont, the goal should be to mantan as much tssue on the plant untl the sprng wnds blow t away and hopefully bermudagrass begns to green-up. Golf cart traffc should be mnmzed n crtcal landng, httng and approach areas. Although the amount of tssue wll declne throughout the wnter months naturally, golf cart traffc wll dramatcally ncrease the rate of declne and worsen the condtons. Whle the above s based on my experence and opnons, I beleve t s best for turfgrass managers to consder conductng research experments on ther golf course before makng major decsons or changes. The best way to conduct these s wth replcated trals on small portons of the golf course. I would be pleased to help organze such experments on the front edges of the farways or out-ofplay areas. If the change of grass s desred, one should frst run these small scale experments pror to any expensve outlay to major renovaton. Sde-by-sde comparsons can be made to see f the desred outcomes from the changes are met. Based on my vst and knowledge of EPCC, I would recommend the followng: 1. Conduct small scale research projects before any grass converson s consdered. Research wll lkely show lttle beneft from a grass converson. 2. Double the amount of ntrogen fertlzer appled to the farways to ncrease recovery from wnterkll. Based on our dscussons, ths would be approxmately 6-7 lb N/1000ft 2 for the year. These should be made n 1-2 applcatons per growng month. 3. Restrct wnter golf cart traffc begnnng September Mnmze traffc to the landng/httng areas and approaches. Please contact me f you have further questons. Regards, Dr Ryan Goss, Assstant Professor of Turfgrass Scence, Dept. of Plant and Envronmental Servces July 2011 Happy 4th of July! Page 5

6 James Heard, Bll Pppn and Jm Edge were wtness to an awesome shot by Jonathan Rogers on Thursday, June 2 nd. On the 13 th hole, Jonathan found hs second shot n the farway 110 yards from the hole. Whle hs three other playng partners searched for ther own balls n the rough and the dtch, Mr. Rogers selected hs ptchng wedge, practced hs smooth swng, and sent the ball salng toward the hole. Wth two hops and a short roll, the ball found ts way to the hole for an eagle 3! Mr. Rogers was later seen buyng rounds of Ensure for hs group n the Men s Grll, celebratng a great shot. On Frday, June 10 th, we were notfed of another great shot from El Paso Country Club s Self-Proclamed Best Player, Bll Word. After a busy day on the car lot offerng great deals wth lttle or no money down and guaranteed credt approval, Mr. Word has been known to come out and squeeze n a quck round here at the club before sunset. Wth Mr. Bll Haas jonng hm ths late afternoon/early evenng round, the two Blls set off on the back nne wth the sun easng ts way west over the horzon. Bll, wth ptchng wedge n hand, ddn t let the pn out of hs sght and from 119 yards away made a crsp precse swng and struck hs ball clean. Landng softly on the green, the ball checked up and rolled nto the hole for an eagle 2! Wth daylght fadng fast, the par was never n need of headlghts, as Mr. Word s beamng smle was plenty brght. Mr. Word was quoted as sayng Even a blnd Dyer Dog fnds a bone every now and then! Great shot, Bll. The 18 th of June saw two great shots of ts own. Adn Brown, decked out n burnt orange almost head to toe, closed hs outward nne n fne fashon. On the 9 th green n two for the frst tme n ages, Adn was 60 feet from the hole. He was on the green, but about as far away from the pn as possble. Wth hs playng partners Mr. Sonny Brown, Mr. Tom Benson and Mr. Mark Tomln watchng hm plumb bob from that far away and snckerng, Adn stroked hs putt frm and true. Rollng over the hlls wth perfect speed, the putt sank for an eagle 3, much to astonshment of hs playng partners. I m sure Adn heard The Eyes of Texas n hs head as he strutted to the hole to retreve hs ball. He wll be able to brag about hs great putt, and wnnng hs match aganst Mark, tl Gabrel blows hs horn! Hook em, Adn! The second awesome shot of that day came from Clay Lowenfeld. Whle playng wth hs son, Luke, and Luke s Father-n-law, Rusty, Clay found one of the rarest of brds - the Sandy Eagle! Wth a strong drve on the 15 th hole, Clay found hs ball n the greensde bunker. Most players look at a bunker and see the hardest shot n golf. Not Clay. Apparently, he s of the Walter Hagen School of Bunker Play- The bunker shot s the easest shot n golf you don t even have to ht the ball. - Walter Hagen Wth a splash of sand, and a muted thump (just lke Sr Walter suggested), Clay s ball floated out of the sand, landed softly and hopped nto the hole for a Sandy Eagle 2! We should all be so lucky. Great shot, Clay! That practce has really started to pay off! Page 6 Happy 4th of July! July 2011

7 desre to learn. E l Paso Country Club s Summer Camp has gotten off to a rousng start. Many of the chldren partcpatng are here for a second year and the mprovement s showng. The tenns partcpants have shown great enthusasm n ths heat not only for the game but n ther Out on the golf course the young pro s are also showng some great mprovement as they contnue to ht the ball farther on the drvng range. Learnng to select the rght club for the best shot may be a few years away but these kds are well on ther way to a future n the PGA. Swmmng s no doubt one the most exctng actvtes for these young campers as t allows them a chance to cool off and quck access to great snacks. 17 by Ator Zubarran, Tenns Drector So far, summer has kept us busy. As soon as one event s over, another one comes along. We started June wth our 2nd Annual Men's Invtatonal Tournament. The event was flled wth many actvtes for everyone n the famly. We kcked off the event on Frday mornng wth a women's scramble and tournament play started that afternoon. We were lucky enough to secure the partcpaton of a few college players as well as the top local pros. For the second year n a row, we also had the prvlege to see a former Grand Slam Champon play on our courts. The rest of the weekend was flled wth some outstandng matches and plenty of actvtes. The weekend ncluded a kds only event n whch we gave away many przes; a Pro-Am that, sadly for the pros, showed there s not much dfference n level from the pros to some of our junor members, and a couple of cookouts for the whole famly. I want to thank the many sponsors and volunteers that made ths a very successful event. Specal thanks to Chrs Hunt and Hunt Communtes for ther support. Ths year, all proceeds wll go to the EPCC Tenns Assocaton to help fund Scholarshp programs. Congratulatons to Artem Baradach from SMU (Sngles), and Maro Urqud from the Unversty of Arzona and Tanner Brown from Lpscomb Unversty (Doubles) as they proved to be the strongest players on the feld over the weekend. As I sad, as soon as one event was over, we moved on to the next one. We held a compettve junor camp from June 6th through the 10th to help the kds get ready for the Southwest Junor Closed n Tucson, the most mportant junor tournament on the calendar. We had many kds perform very well and they represented EPCC better than any other club n El Paso. We began our summer schedule on the 13th and the frst sesson of the summer camp began on the 21st wth a full house. All thngs beng sad, t was a fun and entertanng month. We started July by hostng a Natonal Junor Open for kds 14 and under over the 4th of July weekend. The tournament brought a great opportunty for some of our junors to compete aganst kds from all over the country. Ths tournament also gves us all a chance to watch some kds that may be competng at the pro level n the near future. Play started on July 2nd and contnued throughout the weekend wth the fnal rounds takng place on July 4th. As for housekeepng ssues, the second sesson of the summer camp s already full. However, you can always get on the watng lst as there are usually a couple of last mnute cancellatons. The regular tenns programs wll contnue throughout the month of July and for the frst couple of weeks n August. We have been workng on an updated emal lst n order to make sure we keep everyone nformed about the events and actvtes gong on at the club. If you haven't receved any emals lately from us, please call or come by and provde us wth an emal address. Enjoy the summer! TENNIS TIP #1 Always have a bottle of water wth you on the court. In the hot summer months you need to keep hydrated even when not playng compettvely. Losng fluds on the court can lead to dehydraton and deprve your body of the fluds t needs. Some of the symptoms of dehydraton nclude; dry mouth, lghtheadedness, lethargy or confuson and nausea. When replenshng fluds you should drnk slowly and carefully, rather than tryng to fll-up quckly. Water s the best opton but electrolyte fluds are also effectve f they contan small amounts of sugar. July 2011 Happy 4th of July! Page 17
