2 GENERAL MANAGER U P D A T E Dear Members, My time is winding down as your General Manager. I am working on preparing the management staff for a busy fall and the Board is working hard to find the right replacements to ensure a smooth transition. My official last day will be September 2nd for the Labor Day fireworks. I look forward to ending my career with the Club on the busiest day of the season. This month we have several great events planned for the membership: the Adult White Party at the pool, Men s Guest Day for golfers, weekend pool bar specials and many wonderful specials offered in the restaurant. Please read the entire newsletter for more details on all these family fun events. The membership drive continues to welcome many new families to the Club. Please keep the Club in mind with friends and colleagues as our membership drive will continue into the fall. I would like to thank the Board, membership and staff for a great five-years at HCC. My family and I truly enjoyed being a part of your family and we hope that you have enjoyed getting to know us and working together. The Club is in very good shape and I expect that it will continue to thrive for many years to come. 3 PAUL GLOMP CLUBHOUSE MANAGER CLUBHOUSE UPDATE Dear Hillendale Country Club Members, Thank you for the warm welcome. Everyone has been very kind and helpful and I appreciate all the support. As I am still relatively new I am continuing to get up to speed with everything by learning names and the general culture of the Club. I am very proud of the dining room staff that has worked hard to better facilitate pleasurable dinning experiences. Unfortunately this month we will loose some key staff members from the restaurant and clubhouse who will be going back to college. Kati the intern will be leaving early August. Kati has done a phenomenal job for Hillendale, picking up any missing piece we asked her too from filling in for Haleigh, designing flyers, working parties, you name it, Kati did it! As for our servers, we will certainly miss these superstars; Sarah, Kara and Lizzie who killed it each and every day! They will also be sorely missed! Then we have guys that do the heavy lifting Cameron, Ben, Reed, Nate, Jake, Chris, Brian, Alex, Justin, and Andrew. These guys set up, broke down, cleaned up, and hauled coolers and tables and anything else we asked. As you can see, it takes a small army to pull off our day to day operations. These staff members were integral in our successful 2017 summer season. If you should you see them and have the opportunity to thank and wish them good luck, please do, they certainly deserve it! Looking ahead into August my focus will stay on the Member dining experience. I have been working closely with Gregg, Marian and the entire team to make sure with time and training, we will be even better than we are today! Anytime that Members can make reservations and let us know you are coming in advance, we appreciate it. This information helps us with staffing and organization in the restaurant. Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank a special friend and mentor; Joe Fulco. As everyone knows Joe is moving on and this is his last month here at Hillendale. I wanted to thank Joe not only for myself, but on behalf of the entire HCC staff. Joe has been great leader for the club and will missed by many. Personally I know Joe wants each and every one of us to be successful, not only as individuals, but also as a team for Hillendale. Thank you Joe, I wish you all the best. If there is anything I can do to help make your experience at Hillendale more enjoyable, please do not hesitate to reach out to me, I am happy to help. I hope everyone enjoys their August, and I look forward to seeing you here at the Club soon! 4 MEMBERSHIP UPDATE HALEIGH FULCO MEMBERSHIP MARKETING DIRECTOR Dear Members, It s hard to believe that summer is winding down already! We have some great events coming up this month like our new Ladies-Only Pool Day, Family Fishing Tournament & Adults-Only White Soiree Party. These events are perfect occasions to invite friends, family or colleagues to check out Hillendale and all the wonderful amenities we offer. Our membership drive has gained momentum this summer and as we enter August I m very excited to let you know that we have welcomed 63 new families to the Club so far this year! Please extend a warm welcome to all our new families and reach out if you see them around the Club. As Joe stated in his to the membership last month, I have recently relocated to Houston, TX to start my next chapter with my fiancé. The last two weeks I have been adjusting to my new life style but I have continued to assist the Club remotely during this period of transition. As my time at the Club is coming to an end I wanted to thank the membership for all your support over the last two years. It has been a privilege to work for HCC and be your Membership Marketing Director. I ve had a wonderful experience and I will miss the bonds I have formed with the membership and staff! It has been my pleasure to recruit and welcome over 120 new families to Hillendale during my tenure and with the current offerings in place I know the Club will continue to grow and succeed moving forward! 15 SUPERINTENDENT UPDATE BRAD NOVOTNY HEAD GREENS SUPERINDENT Hillendale Members, July brought us some dry weather, some hot weather, and plenty of rain. So far, our fungicides are working properly on the greens, tees, and fairways, we haven t seen any insect damage, and we re closely monitoring our nutrients and adjusting them as necessary. I m pleased with the root depths on the greens. This will help us maintain healthy greens through the season. This month we will be aerifying the greens on August 22 and 23 with the 24th reserved in case of bad weather. We will be performing a process that limits abrasion on the stressed summer turf, but incorporates a large amount of sand into the profile. You ll notice we did some work at the water cooler stations on the course. Our intern Conrad Mellin from UMD is majoring in Landscape Management and wanted to add some color and texture around the coolers. I m very pleased with the addition to these areas. August tends to be the toughest part of the season for us, so please understand that sometimes turf health prioritizes filling divots, raking bunkers, or other tasks that affect playability but not maintaining plant vigor. We ll keep everything healthy so the more forgiving weather of September will bring better playing conditions. I look forward to seeing you at the club! 16 GOLF UPDATE BRANDON GRECCO HEAD GOLF PRO M A T C H O F T H E C E N T U R Y Hole #5 ~ 432 Yards R.G. now has the honor standing on the 5th tee. You couldn t ask for a more beautiful day, 78 degrees, not a cloud in the sky and just a hint of wind. Fortunately that hint of wind was from behind the golfers on the tee giving them a little help on a long hole! R.G. stepped up with his driver, aimed down the right side to allow for his natural draw and took a swing. Perfect shot, his tee shot sailed down the right side of the fairway and turned over just slightly to leave him in position A for his 2nd shot! Next up was Brandon, knowing he has a tendency to lose this particular tee shot right, he aimed down the left side and put an aggressive swing on the ball. Knowing he almost never misses left this was the best play for him. As soon as he hit it he knew he caught it, the downside to such an aggressive line on #5 is if you hit it down the left side with a draw you run out of real estate..quickly! That is just what happened, he watched helplessly as his best struck tee shot of the day sailed over the trees on the left side of the hole and one hopped into the hazard. position F. The advantage was clearly in R.G. s favor at this point, he was sitting pretty with 145 yards to a back pin while his opponent was in the water. R.G. was away and took an 8-iron, it was a fairly straight forward shot to the back middle pin, the only caution was to not go long. Short-siding yourself behind the green on #5 is not the way to make par! He took a solid swing, made good contact and executed his plan perfectly, hitting his 8-iron to the middle of the green and leaving himself 25 feet below the hole for birdie. Next up was Brandon. Since he was in a water hazard (marked with Yellow Stakes) on #5 and there was no drop zone in play on the hole, he had one of two choices. He could choose to take stroke and distance and retee, or he could identify the spot his ball last crossed the water hazard and drop as far back as he wanted keeping that spot between him and the pin. Given his choices, he chose to drop his ball at a comfortable yardage for him which was 130 yards to the flag. With the wind and conditions that would be a comfortable Pitching Wedge where going long wouldn t come into play. He proceeded with his drop and set-up for the shot. He set-up and pulled the trigger, the ball came off the clubface perfectly and was drawing right towards the cup! This might go in! As luck would have it, the ball landed just short of the cup, took one big hop and came to rest a mere 12 inches behind the hole.kickin par 4! Just as he drew it up! Now it was up to R.G. to make a birdie to extend his lead, he had a 25 footer straight up the hill. Unfortunately he left his putt just a couple inches short and settled for a par 4 to secure an unexpected halve! This match is getting good! Brandon Grecco 4 R.G. Hackett 4 R.G.
