3 President s Message Kwek Chiow Yiap Patrick Captain s Message As we approach yet another year end, and are just a few months away from the end of our term, the Management Committee (MC) has been busy reviewing the progress of the tasks we had set ourselves, closing out projects and setting the footprint for the next MC, to be elected next May, to continue to meet new challenges and seize new opportunities. Upper most among the challenges was to take a decision to renovate and repair our 16-year-old golf course, determine what needs to be done and the budget required. Five months into the project, I am pleased to report that the work has gone on extremely well, and we are well on our way to completing the renovation of the first nine holes, and making preparations for work on the next nine. More details of the progress of the work can be found on pages 6 and 7 in this issue of. The financial challenges we face are well documented in previous messages. In the face of declining Social Membership numbers through resignations, we have aggressively launched membership drives to fill the vacancies. The results have been very encouraging, and as new active members come in to replace those exiting, we are seeing greater participation in our social programmes and significant improvements in the patronage of our Food & Beverage (F&B) outlets, despite the lower traffic of golfers as a result of the partial closure of the golf course. Various social facilities and F&B venues have also undergone refurbishment and improvements. The T Bar is now a hive of activity on weekend evenings as a result of our active publicity efforts and promotions. The three private karaoke rooms in the Water Hazard, which has largely been under-utilised has now been reduced to a single unit, with the result that we now have a larger main lounge. This now gives us greater flexibility to use this for bigger Club events. Members may also hire this facility for their private functions. Having retired the old Tee Garden on the second level of the Social Wing, we now have a new Tee Garden at the site of one of our tennis courts on the ground level. This banquet facility is elegantly decorated and can hold 36 tables, and is well suited for large scale Club events and private wedding parties. All these improvements will enhance the vibrancy in the Club, and together with a significant expected increase in income from golfing when the course renovation is completed, will go some way to plug the gap in our financial performance of the last few years. A Membership Task Force has recently been established, with terms of reference to explore and introduce new membership types, and other areas to generate greater revenue. It is led by Vice-President Christina Khoo, with Club Captain Oh Kian Beng, Honorary Treasurer Jimmy Chan and Sports Convenor Tan Kee Long as members. To round off a busy year of activities, the Club will mark the year-end celebrations with our traditional Christmas Light Up on Saturday 19 November and our Christmas Golf Game and Party on Saturday 17 December. I would like to invite members to take part in these two events planned for you. I wish all our members and staff a Merry Christmas and a Very Happy and Healthy New Year. Here s a great update to start off my last message for the year. Phase 1 of our golf course renovation is at its final stage and the new nine holes will be open for play on Monday 5 December. Mark down this date, golfers! Over the past few months, we have been working very closely with our course renovation contractor to ensure that we keep the renovation schedule and budget in check. On that, I am extremely pleased to report that the renovation works is going along as planned and utilised funds are also kept well within budget. With the completed nine holes open for play, Phase 2 of the renovation will commence in December. We are at the halfway mark now, and are moving eagerly towards the finishing line next year. I would like to once again thank our golfers for all your understanding and support throughout the renovation period. The golf course belongs to all of us. We must take ownership. Golfers play a vital role in helping us to care for the golf course as it takes the effort of everyone to maintain the course in good playing condition. As such, I urge golfers to remember to repair ball marks & divots and rake bunkers after use. This not only allows us a better upkeep of the golf course, it also makes golfing an enjoyable experience for all. The end of the year seems to be a time for more good news. Congratulations to our Warren ladies team of the SGA Inter-Club League! They had a remarkable performance and aced both the Ladies A and B Divisions. And in the overall Ladies Division, they were placed second. Bravo, ladies! Thank you for bringing glory to Warren once again. Of course, I wish to also record a big note of thanks to all our players who have represented Warren to play in the 2016 SGA Inter-Club League. It was no mean feat for sure to have joined the league as it meant giving up a great deal of personal time for training and taking part in the matches. This is especially so as most of the players are already balancing work and family. You guys have helped to keep the Warren spirit going strong and I hope all of you have enjoyed playing in the league. Thank you, thank you and thank you! Oh Kian Beng With 2016 coming to a close, we have one last game to look forward to. The Christmas Mixed Texas Scramble afternoon shotgun game on Saturday 17 December will conclude our golfing event calendar for the year. The theme for the game this year is red for ladies and blue for men. So golfers, you know what colours to put on that day! While we are celebrating the coming festive season, we mustn t forget the less fortunate. In conjunction with the Club s yearly support of the Boy s Brigade during Christmas, we will be having a small charity drive for the very first time in this event for this youth organisation which runs lots of community service programmes. With our golf course operating on 9 holes, there will be lesser slots for the game. So do sign up early to avoid disappointment. Christmas carols are going to fill the air around us soon. During this season of giving, let us take time to slow down and enjoy the simple things. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and may you continue to be blessed with all good things in the New Year. 4 5

You are done when it s a surface you would want to putt over. Tips on how to repair divots A player who cuts and displaces any turf should ensure it is replaced and pressed down. Divot holes should be filled using sand buckets. Know Your Rules Golfers, test your knowledge in Golf Rules! Simply answer True or False to the following questions and send your answers to us at marcom@warren.org.sg by 9 December lucky winners will each receive $50 worth of Club F&B Vouchers! 1. A player s ball is believed to be in a bunker covered by leaves. The player probes for the ball with a club, which touches the ground in the bunker. The player is penalised for touching the ground in the bunker. 2. A ball is half buried in the rough. Having announced his intention in advance to his opponent, the player, for the purpose of identifying the ball, touches the ball and rotates it. By so doing, he identifies the ball as his ball. There is no penalty as he had announced his intention. 3. In stroke play, a group preparing to start a hole is waiting for the group ahead to get out of the range. If it is raining, the group may take shelter from rain in a rain shelter close to the tee and resume play as soon as the group in front is out of range. 4. In stroke play, A returned his score card. The Committee discovers that no score had been entered for the 17th hole; however, A s total score for the round as recorded on the card by A or his marker was correct. A is not disqualified as he submitted a correct gross score. 5. A player finds his ball in high rough after a two-minute search, leaves the area to get a club and, when he returns, is unable to find the ball. He is allowed another five minutes to find his ball, as this is a new search. Congratulations to the following lucky members who each won $50 worth of F&B Vouchers in the September/October 2016 Golf Quiz! 1. Eric Kang 2. Kwek Pei Qi 3. 6 News News New Reciprocal Club RBA Golf Club Sdn Bhd Brunei New Reciprocal Club Nuwara Elya Golf Club Sri Lanka Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, founded in 1889, is one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia and probably the world, and is enriched with a tradition and an ambience which is hard to equal. The club is situated at the foot of Mount Pedro (Mount Piduruthalagala) and is surrounded by some of the finest tea gardens in Sri Lanka. The 18-hole course has a length of 6075 yards. The course is a testing par 71 consisting of fairways which are long and narrow, bordered by tall trees and dense shrubbery. Good positional play is required, and the terrain enfolds the golfer in a constant uphill and downhill trek with many water hazards. The grass on the greens is local, mixed with bluegrass. Conditions of Visit: Bookings must be made through Warren s Golf Department. Visiting members are to present introductory letters issued from Warren s Golf Department, membership card, passport or identification card and a current handicap certificate. Each member may visit the reciprocal club a total of fourteen (14) times in a calendar year, but not more than three (3) times a week. Each member may introduce up to a maximum of three (3) guests, subject to payment of prevailing guest fee. Each visiting member shall pay for all applicable charges (if any) by cash or credit card. A subsidiary of Royal Brunei Airlines, the club is located near the Brunei International Airport, less than 3-minute drive from there and about 10 minutes from Bandar Seri Begawan. The layout of the golf course is generally characterised by flat terrain, with huge man-made lakes spread out over the course. These lakes add to the beauty of the surroundings, while irrigating the layout. It is obvious that designer Max Wexler went to great lengths to retain as much of the original vegetation as possible, especially on the second nine. It is visually pleasing but not too forgiving of wayward shots that may wind up out-of-bounds or, worse still, in the water. The survey allowed the Club to obtain a snapshot of customer service levels across facilities, F&B outlets and other service areas. On top of the Online Member Survey, the Club Management had also conducted Member Focus Group Discussions and onsite observations (Mystery Shoppers) to gather more feedback and views from members on the Club s service quality. The findings will allow the Club Management to review and highlight any service gaps to further improve our service quality and enhance members service experience at the Club. 9 News Warren Golf & Country Club Your Kind Words... Feedback is an important tool for improvement. On top of complaints, it is gratifying to also receive compliments about the Club s staff, activities and facilities. This section feature some compliments that we have received from members, guests and event/function organisers. THANK YOU for the compliments, which will no doubt spur us on to further improve our services! Jackson (F&B Service Staff) was very helpful, able to remember our orders (for 10 pax) well and attentive to our needs. He looks presentable and professional. - George Foo (Member) 20 Aug 2016 I come regularly to Warren for a round of golf or two each week. I like Warren as it is operated like a family. The Club members and staff are the members of the family. While I enjoy the time I spent in Warren, I should not forget to thank those staff who have made great efforts to make members experience enjoyable. My appreciation specially goes to the staff who are manning the golfers changing room. They are the kind of staff sought after by every service company. Here I would like to talk a bit about staff Sim (Towel Counter Staff). Since I became a Warren member, I have been extremely impressed by Sim for his willingness in making extra efforts to serve members. Just to name a few, he constantly reminds members/guests not to leave anything behind when they return the keys. He also checks with members for any extra service needed. His good service was not disrupted even during the time he had some health issues. I am glad he has been recovering well and wish he will get better and better. While Mr Sim is doing his duties as staff at the changing room, he is also very helpful in other areas like updating members/ guests on golf course operations. Sometimes, he takes good care of members by reminding them of preparation for hot or wet weather; he also shares with members when the golf course is closed and reopened, which is very useful information for golfers. These are the value-added service from Mr Sim. Thank you, Sim. Most of the time, I took those good services from Sim for granted and kept silent. What prompted me to write to you today is just one more good service from Sim. But this time it is unbelievably unexpected! I came to Warren today (18 Sep) and would like to check out something from yesterday s newspapers. I went to the Reading Room and I was simply told that yesterday s papers was not available. Giving up the search, I went to the golfers changing room for an evening 9-hole play. When I casually mentioned that I could not find yesterday s papers to Sim, he immediately took it upon himself and promised me he would try to find one for me. When I came back from my 9-hole game, Sim passed me a stack of yesterday s newspapers! I was speechless then. Sim s extra effort made my day! I am proud of being a member of Warren who has great staff like Sim. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all staff who work at the golfers changing room. You guys are great and deserve recognition from the Club management. - Fu Lingchen (Member) 18 Sep Linda, Tiffany and Kevin have always been very friendly and helpful, going out of their way to meet my family s needs and requirements. They are a credit to WGCC. The quality of the menu and food (at the Golfers Terrace) have improved recently. We enjoy coming to WGCC for our meals. - Keith Kleinman (Member) 17 Sep 2016 Hi Jessie (F&B Admin Executive), Desmond (Senior Ops & F&B Manager), Devan (Senior F&B/Banquet Executive), I would like to thank YOU for helping to create such a wonderful experience for my husband and son s birthday on Sunday. I am extra appreciative of them for giving us extra time to chase our guests out of the room. Would highly recommend Warren to everyone. *thumbs up* - Nicole Chan (Non-member) 26 Sep 2016 Dear Jessie (F&B Admin Executive) & all staff at the Golfers Terrace, My guests had a wonderful lunch yesterday. They were happy that the food was delicious and the service staff helpful. Keep up the good work. - Ong San Cheng (Non-member) 26 Sep 2016 Michael (F&B Service Staff) is very smiley and is excellent in his service support. He could even recommend a dish not in the menu that we were very satisfied with. It is a privilege of your organisation to have Michael serving members and friends. - Steven Lim (Member) 26 Sep 2016 Linda (F&B Service Staff) is one of the longest service personnel. She is matured, courteous, cheerful and carried out her duties diligently and happily even though there were many customers. She deserves to be appreciated and valued as a service staff. - Goh Ee Keng (Member) 29 Sep 2016 Juliana (Gym Instructress) is very helpful and patient. I was happy to sign up for a second package after completing one. She has nurtured my passion to lift more and bulk my muscle mass more. 13 As far as local sports go, 2016 has been a sweet year for this tiny red dot nation we call home. If swimming is the icing on the cake, then Singapore is definitely the flavour of the month - or the year, for that matter. That winning streak by two of Singapore s swim greats Joseph Schooling & Yip Pin Xiu in the recent Olympic & Paralympic Games has really rubbed off on two of our own Warren-bred swimmers Chai Jin (14 years old) & Jian Yan (15). Both created waves of their own in the locally-held Inter-Club and Age Group Swim Meets by winning podium positions, and in the process, booked their tickets into the fast lanes to race against other international swim greats in the recently concluded FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup 2016, held at the OCBC Aquatic Centre. Fresh from their races, here s what both have to say: How does it feel to be part of the FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup 2016? Chai Jin: This is the second year that we both took part in the FINA Singapore World Cup leg. It s been very exhilarating to swim in such big meets. More so this year, with big names like Roland Schoeman of South Africa and Kyle Charmers of Australia just lanes apart from me competing in the same event. In this meet, I swam three events, 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle. Since these were all open categories, bringing a medal was a tall order, when the seeded timings of the other great athletes were being taken into consideration. I didn t achieve the results my team had hoped for. Nevertheless, there was so much that I gained in terms of competition experience. We also got the chance to meet Chad Le Clos, Katinka, Masato and race with all these Olympians and world-class athletes. It was undoubtedly an exciting experience and a huge step in my swimming career. Jian Yan: It s phenomenal. As Chai Jin said, this was our second FINA that we qualified and participated. The only difference for me was that this was my first time competing in the short-course version. The year before was an all long-course meet. Take nothing away from that! I was just as excited as I was the year before. After all, such a highprofile meet brings to me a wealth of competition exposure, allowing me to measure up with swimmers in my age group from all over the world. Overall, it was an enriching experience, especially meeting top swimmers like Chad Le Clos. I have learnt quite a lot from them and hope to apply it in my swimming to further improve my performance. I am now already looking forward to the next competition. Is qualifying for the FINA/airweave World Cup one of the goals for you in your swimming career? CJ: Definitely a goal for us! Being able to race against fast swimmers from all parts of the globe will certainly be a motivating force for us and we both hope we can continue to be part of major swim meets like this in the future. JY: I have definitely targeted this meet since 2 years back, because it is a really good stepping stone for bigger meets like the Southeast Asian games. And what do you hope to bring to the table for Singapore in future international competitions? CJ & JY: We hope we can better our timings, swim faster, do Singapore proud and prove to other nations that Singapore s athletes are a force to be reckoned with. 24 Profile Feature Young Swimmers from Warren: Chai Jin & Jian Yan One for the memory. Jian Yan, Chai Jin & Coach Howie posing for a shot with the great Chad Clos of South Africa. Both of you have put up some impressive wins in competitions you have taken part in, notably the 15th Annual Inter-Club Swim Meet and the 16th Age Group Swim Meet. What is your favourite event to swim, and what do you think drives you to excel in it? JY: My favourite event is definitely the 50m breaststroke. It is the one event I look to sign up for in any meet I take part in. What really drives me to swim this event is because I love doing explosive training, like how I focus on carrying heavier weights with less repetition as opposed to lighter weights but more repetitions. Therefore, this translates to short distance sprints in the pool. Breaststroke is the stroke that I have been swimming since I started. My love for the stroke has never subsided and I still continue to swim it. CJ: Yes I did pretty well in both meets with several Gold medals. I think my favourite event so far would be the 50m butterfly. I think it s the feeling of going fast and the elegance of the stroke that really make me want to improve and outdo myself. What do you think is the biggest difference between both of you in your swimming styles? JY: I am good only with the breaststroke. Chai Jin is a more all-rounded swimmer, with the ability to swim the individual medley event. CJ: My main strokes are butterfly and backstroke. If you could acquire strength or be as good as the other, what would it be? JY: I would definitely want his backstroke abilities and his stamina, because my backstroke and stamina are just terrible, at least in my opinion. CJ: I would really like to achieve the speed and efficiency of his breaststroke. A Slice of Life In The Fast Lane What other short/long term goals will you be aiming for? CJ: My short-term goal now would be to achieve new PB for my main strokes i.e. butterfly and backstroke. As for my long term goal, it would be to represent the Singapore in Southeast Asian Age Group Competition next year or other overseas competitions. To explore and experience what it is like to race in other countries. JY: My short term goal is to break my own personal best record in the 50m breaststroke by the end of the year. My long term goal is also to take part in the Southeast Asian Age Group Competition next year. What does a typical practice day/routine look like when you are training for competitions? JY: While training for competitions, my training sets consist of aerobics and pace work, to train my stamina and a couple of sprints to end off the session. Training can go up to 9 times a week while preparing for competitions, coupled with gym sessions 3 times weekly. About 2 weeks before a competition, training would be toned down to about 6 times a week, with less intense sets to mentally and physically prepare myself for the competition such that my muscles are not sore. Chai Jin in action during the FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup Jian Yan (left) and Chai Jin. CJ: Usually, I wake up at 4.45am, and go off for practice which starts at 5.30am at ACS Barker and the session last for 90 minutes. By 7.30am, my dad will then drive me to school on most mornings. After school, I travel back to practice which commences at 4.30pm till 6.30pm or later. I train twice a day, usually 8-9 times a week. It s really tiring but i get used to it after awhile. Tell us about your experience meeting Joe Schooling when you were younger. CJ: It was my first time meeting him and I was really excited about it. I met him at the Singapore Sports School during a Singapore National Age Group (SNAG) meet. After his warm up, I went up to him for a picture and autograph with my younger brother Chai Wei. It was a privilege meeting him and being able to interact with him was a great honour. When I saw him race, it really gave me the inspiration to train and work harder. Tell us your thoughts on the recent successes by Singapore swimmers in both Olympic and Paralympic games in Rio. JY: The swimmers that took part in the Olympics really did us Singaporeans proud. Like how I am extremely motivated to emulate their success in the games, I hope that other swimmers draw motivation from them and do Singapore proud. CJ: I feel that it was a very proud moment for Singapore especially when Joseph Schooling, Yip Pin Xiu and Theresa Goh won the gold and bronze medals in Rio. In swimming, it really gave local swimmers like us a sense of confidence and motivation that even though we are just a small country compared to other countries, we still can still be the best if we have the passion and the drive for it. 25
