1 Tournament Tap-ins The Lipout The Official Publication of The Club at Apple Mountain July By Mark Berscheid Tournament Director Course Record Holder Wins Senior Championship T he Apple Mountain Senior Championship was played on June 12, The tournament featured 21 men and 3 women senior golfers in 3 flights, with eight players in each flight. The title of Senior Champion would be awarded to the low-gross golfer in the A flight. The A flight also had 2 low-net winners while the B and C flights had three low-net winners each. Congratulations go out to Bill Bates who carded a gross 73 to capture the 2016 Senior Championship. A flight net winners were Mike Dietz, 1st with a net 72 and Steve Dringenberg, 2nd with a net 76. The B flight winners were Bud Collins, 1st with a net 68; Dennis Ringnes, 2nd with a net 71; and Ric Pinder, 3rd for a net 74. The C flight winners were Del Mobley in 1st with a net 69; Larry Thornhill, 2nd with a net 70; and Mary Ann Baker claimed 3rd with a net 72. Congratulations to all you Apple Mountain Senior Championship winners. Don't spend all your money in one place. Well actually, I guess there's only one place you can spend it - the Pro Shop. In addition, a net and gross skins game was conducted. Based on his research of past data, Volume 10 Issue 5 1 Steve Jenkins implemented a two-tier skins format. Thanks for all your work in this area, Steve. We look forward to this type of skins game in the future. Last but not least is "The Story of Armando". Yes folks, Armando Lizarraga who, disguised as a mild-mannered P.G. & E. retiree, fights a never-ending battle for truth, justice and a way to keep from buying beer for his hole-inone. Armando was playing well, carding a hole-inone on the 13th and a birdie on the 17th. His dream of a B flight first-place finish was most certainly in his grasp. And then and then and then came the 18th hole. A good drive and, with his power, normally he's home in two. Instead, he found the high weeds on the left near the bridge, and he [Tournament Tap-ins - Continued on Page 3] Bill Bates 2016 Apple Mountain Senior Champion
2 From the President Jay s Viewpoint By Jay Toolson M any of my predecessors have harped on pace of play, and for good reason. Now it is my turn. A select few of our Club s tournaments require that we count and card all strokes. This simple requirement may require extra effort on our part to change the way we play a hole, particularly in championship/ncga tournaments. A key recommendation to keep up with the pace of play may be to hit more provisional balls. It takes only a few seconds, but it can speed play from marginal to acceptable. Something I hear a lot is, We played in 5 ½ hours, inside the allowable limit. However, what was not mentioned, We were 30 minutes behind the group in front of us. Pace of play means keeping up with the groups in front of us, as well as staying within the allowable 5 ½ hour limit. That is not always possible, but it should be kept in mind, especially in championship tournaments. Good course etiquette includes keeping up with the players in front of us. Golfers we look up to always practice good pace of play methods, such as hitting a provisional ball if there is any chance that the first ball may not be found. If we keep up with the group in front, the game is more enjoyable for all, especially those behind us. So, play ready golf, play provisionals, and keep your eyes on your playing partners shots. Limit search times to 5 minutes or less; and, above all, limit your conversation to appropriate levels and times. By doing all of this, you, your playing partners, and the players behind you will enjoy the game of golf even more. Steve Jenkins Rules Corner Team Play Rules Just in Time for Summer League T he Rules of Golf that govern team play can be different than when you are playing as a single. Here are a few team play rules that you should be aware of: As you know, asking for and giving advice during singles play is a no-no. But in team play, it s okay to do so with your playing partner. You can t stand on an extension of your partner s line (behind your partner) when he or she putts, but you may look at it during the stroke from the other side of the hole because the line of putt does not extend beyond the hole. You and your partner can play in any order when it s your side s turn to play. This is especially handy on the putting green. For example, partners with similar putts can decide who should go first to give your team the best chance at holing one of the putts. In match play, if your partner s ball on the green can assist your shot off the green, you don t have to mark it unless asked by your opponent. If you hit it, replace your partner s ball, but your ball is played as it lies. If your partner is late arriving at the tee, start playing. You can be a one-man team until he or she arrives. This also applies during the round if one of you has to sit out some holes. The only stipulation is that a partner can only join or rejoin a match or round between holes. It s okay if you need to use your partner s putter or any other club provided the total number of clubs in each bag is 14 or less (not likely to happen in real life). This rule applies even if one of you damages a club during normal course of play, such as bending it while hitting a shot by a tree root. The damaged club can be replaced, provided you don t unduly delay the tournament. [Rules Corner - Continued on Page 7] 2
3 [Tournament Tap-Ins - Continued from Page 1] was transformed from a respectable golfer into a human weed-wacker. Unplayable lie would have been the cautious choice, but Armando played the weeds, and the weeds won. Afterwards, I was helping Jay with the scorekeeping (which was already slowed down, logging Armando s estimated 16 on 18), but we had to stop because Armando had everybody at the table howling at his description of his travails. Congratulations, Armando, on your hole-in-one and for your good-natured acceptance of the vagaries of golf. Jim Cumbra has now moved into second place in the amazing-but-true Legends of Apple Mountain Golf. Senior Qualifier It was the June 23rd 18th Annual Senior Fourball Net Qualifier or, as I like to call it, don't count my chickens before they hatch. The format for the qualifier was the best holeby-hole net score from each two-person team. A somewhat low turnout of four teams this year meant there was a pretty good chance of winning a shot at the qualifier by simply entering the competition. My partner, Dave Schecter and I were paired with Ron and MaryAnn Baker. A beautiful day, amiable opponents and a wide-open course led to a totally enjoyable experience. Both teams played fairly well, with Ron Baker leading the way with an excellent 38 on the front nine. On the back 9, Ron couldn't match his front, but MaryAnn came to the rescue with her excellent play. The result was a tie at 6 NCGA Senior Qualifiers Floyd Miller and Bud Collins under par for both teams. The card-off tiebreaker eliminated the Bakers while Dave and I waited for the 2 remaining teams of Bud Collins/Floyd Miller and Dennis DeMoss/Wayne Duty to finish. Since Gary Logan and Mark Lee had won the last qualifier with 7 under, I thought our chances were good. Not quite, the team of Collins and Miller carded a net 58, 12 under par and walked away with the qualifier win. Evidently these two didn't read the qualifier heading of "senior" and played like a couple of kids. I've watched these things for years and typically 10 or 11 under par is very good and wins the spot. Twelve under par is excellent. Congratulations to Bud Collins and Floyd Miller on their excellent play. Good luck on August 10th and on to Poppy Hills in September. [Tournament Tap-ins - Continued on Page 5] Armando Lizarraga entertains the crowd with his hilarious telling of the tarnished hole-in-one and his weed-wacking woes 3

6 NCGA TEAM MATCH by Mark Lee T eam Match, also known as the 12-man, is the largest club competition conducted by the NCGA. It includes almost 200 teams and over 3,000 players each year. I am pleased to be our Team Captain in 2016, and I will manage our participation in this year s competition with my assistant captains, Steve Dringenberg and Nate Humes along with Team Match committee members, Jay Toolson and Jim Cumbra, Jr. We held our first match at Apple Mountain on June 5 th, hosting the team from North Ridge Country Club in Fair Oaks. We kicked off the season with a strong showing, winning Standouts were Matty Dowd and Ryan Bill who both posted rounds of 72 gross, along with Nate Humes who in shooting 75 gross, carded a net 64. Our second match was again at Apple Mountain on June 26 th, hosting the team from Whitney Oaks Golf Course. Our play was uniformly outstanding, and we posted our best performance ever in Team Match, winning Mike Dietz shot our low round of 72 gross, while Bud Collins and Mikey Dietz both posted net 5-under pars. It was a great day all around, and we are off to a strong 2-0 start. Now that summer is here, this year s Team Match season is really heating up, with matches over the next four consecutive weekends. Here is our schedule of remaining matches: Saturday, July 2 nd : HOME vs. Cold Springs GC&CC Saturday, July 9 th : AWAY at North Ridge CC Saturday, July 16 th : AWAY at Whitney Oaks GC Saturday, August 13 th : AWAY at Cold Springs GC&CC Our hope and plan is to run the table in the first three home matches and then to win one or more away matches to seal our entry into the playoffs. Check the Club web site (at ncga-team-match.html) as the season progresses to see how our team is doing. Wish us luck!
