Montpelier, Edinburgh, EH10 4NA, Our playground improvement is looking very good and it will soon be ready for opening. The RoSPA assessment identified a few areas which are being addressed to ensure everything is as good as it can possibly be for the children. Once complete, the children will have training on our new equipment from the PE teacher, class teachers and pupil support assistants, before it is opened in full. P7 are off to Lagganlia Camp on the 16 May. During the week, they will extend their outdoor learning experiences by camping outside for a night! This achievement will go towards their JASS award. Good luck P7! I invite all parents, carers, families and friends to Sports Day on Wednesday 25 May. It is a great morning for all to enjoy. The children will inform you of times and races as details are finalised. Let s hope for some sunshine on the day please! (Reserve Sports Day: Wednesday 01 June 2016.) We have some great sporting events to celebrate. Please see the following pages for details. Well done everyone! Our In-service Day on Thursday focused on planning our improvements for next session. I am pleased we are going to extend French and German into the second year of our three year programme. We shall continue to develop maths and literacy and moderate successful learning with cluster schools to ensure quality of standard at each level, as part of our raising attainment agenda. We shall also look policy and procedure for Positive Behaviour, including anti-bullying, and help children identify their emotions and give them the skills necessary to build resilience. We have an opportunity to teach Mandarin at Bruntsfield and when details are finalised, I shall update you on this. Details of our Standard and Quality Report for this session and our new Improvement Plan will be shared with you, at the end of term, along with the children s Reports. If you are interested in helping with any of our areas for improvement, or would like to suggest other areas for improvement please let me know. It has been fantastic having French and German speaking parents help us this session, I really appreciate the support for modern languages. Thank you! The Parent Council are looking for volunteers to help with the Summer Fete. It is a wonderful event and we all appreciate the time everyone gives to making this a success. Please contact the Parent Council if you are able to help with preparation or are able to help out on the day. Please come along to the Fete and bring family and friends on Saturday 04 June, it is a great day for all to enjoy! Please remember, if you have any concerns, queries, worries or suggestions, please let me, or a member of the Management Team know as we are all happy to help. Kind regards, Carol Kyle
Summer Fête 4th June 11:00-2:00 SAVE THE DATE! Our amazing annual summer fete will take place again this year on 4th June. There will be lots to do -crafts, tombola, sponge the teacher (!), beat the goalie competition...and lots to buy - food, toys, clothes, uniform, bikes and much, much more! For the day to go ahead we need many, many volunteers, to take responsibility for a stand or to set up on the Friday evening and on the Saturday morning, to help at the event or to clear up afterwards. Please get in touch with Tara McGregor (4B parent) as soon as you can to volunteer some of your time douglas.taramcgregor@gmail.com, Look out for more news about the fête by Parentmail. Sports Day 2016 On Wednesday, 25 May we will be holding our annual sports day at Bruntsfield Links (weather permitting). The events will be held at the following times: P1 - P3 P4 - P7 9:30-10:30am 11:00-12:00noon Please feel free to come and join us and cheer the children on. If it is raining or wet, sports day will be postponed until 01 June. P1 Induction Day, Wednesday 22 June If you live in our catchment area and have enrolled your child for a P1 place, you will receive a letter in May inviting you to our new P1 Induction Day. This will take place on Wednesday, 22 June This is an opportunity for your child to visit their classroom and meet other pupils who will be in the class. At the same time parents will receive more detailed information about the admission process for August and the first year at Bruntsfield Primary School. The end of term is often a time when families move and children leave school. If you are planning a change of schools, we would be grateful if you could let us know in writing (letter or to admin@bruntsfield.edin.sch.uk), giving the leaving date and name of the new school. We have long waiting lists for places in some year groups and we appreciate you providing this information to help us plan for next session. Thank you.
Rights Respecting Schools We are delighted to share with you that our school is working towards becoming a Rights Respecting School. This is an award which is given to schools on behalf of UNICEF. The Rights Respecting School Award (RRSA) will help our pupils to grow into confident individuals and responsible citizens. By learning about their rights children also learn about the importance of respecting the rights of others. Our pupils have already started developing an understanding of their rights in school. All the classes have written Class Charters which identify rights that they feel impact most on their school life. The pupils have also discussed how they will respect the rights of others when creating their Class Charters. In the Summer Term children will start to learn about specific rights as the school promotes a Right of the Month. Please ask your child about the Right of the Month to see what they have learned. A new pupil group, called the Rights Respecters, has been formed to lead the work of children s rights in the school. We really hope that you will feel able to support us and your child in working towards our goal of being a Rights Respecting School. If you would like more information about the Convention on the Rights of the Child or the Rights Respecting School Award then please visit: child-rights-in-schools/ Right of the Month In May we are focusing on the following children s right: All children have rights regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, ability or religion. (Convention on the Rights of the Child, Article 2)
Murder or Accident? One stormy night last week at Kinghorn the death of King Alexander III was made. He was going to see his beautiful, new wife Yolande in Fife. No one could stop him, they pleaded with him to stay at least till tomorrow but he would not listen. So he galloped off at high speed like a falcon through the sky. Once at Queensferry he asked a kindly ferryman to row him across the raging Forth. He, being scared reluctantly said yes. As soon as the king got to the other side he mounted on a horse and galloped away. King Alexander stopped at a small town had a drink and a fresh horse. Once ready again he set off and near Kinghorn fell off a cliff and died. The horse broke his neck. Yolande sent out search parties and they found him. Who should rule Scotland now? Rumour has it that it was King Edward 1 st doing but who really knows? By Laila P5B Treason or Storm? Rumours are flooding in about the way the unfortunate incident happened last night. For all we can tell it might have been an accident or might not? It all happened on a raging, stormy night. The wind howled through the trees thrusting them side to side. The king was rushing to Kinghorn to see his beautiful new wife. He galloped down to the harbour to get a boat to the other side of the Forth. The ferryman begged the king to stay but he wouldn t listen. Finally the king reached the inn at the other side. The innkeeper also pleaded for him to stay. He didn t listen, on he galloped. All of a sudden Ahhh! Three people jumped out at him and pushed. Scotland had lost its king. By Iona P5B
Welcome back to Sam (P5C) and Emma (P3B) who have been in Australia since Christmas! Sam has written about their exciting time abroad!
