Allington Castle Archers Nocking Point July 2014 Dates for your diary Sunday 13th Mid-Kent League Match Away at Abbey 10:30 for 11:00 Sunday 20th the Springboard coaching shoot 27th June ACA Championships FITA /Metric rounds 10:00 for 10:30 Our big open tournament at Vigo, all archers not shooting are requested to help T.O. is Neil Richardson Sir Thomas Wyatt on the 5th & 6th July

Captains Corner Hi AllA busy month June - the Longbow Champs, MKL, Dunster, Family Day, Kent WA 1440 shoot (a FITA world record status) and Presidents Trophy. ACA s Longbow Championship. Well not the biggest turnout but a great day of weather and good company. Sue Williams shot only her second 2 way longbow shoot, a Western. For those that have not seen one it means that there are two rows of targets facing each other at, in this case, 65yds apart. In front of both sets of targets there is a line 5 yds from the targets, this is the shooting line say up the field. Three arrows are shot then scored and the archers turn round and shoot down the field to the other line of targets. It is the traditional longbow way of shooting. The other thing that is different is that the winner is the archer with the most hits (irrespecte of score) second is the archer with the highest score, and third is the archer with the most gold s. This can cause a situation where the second archer has the higher score but is not declared the winner. Well 6 archers tried their luck on the 1 st of June, Chris and Ken Bearman, Mike Clark, Barry Ruck, Sue Williams and me. Chris bearman 1 st with 88 hits Geoff Barker 2nd with 460 Ken Bearman 3 rd with 12 golds Sue and Mike got PB s Barry Ruck shot well too. After the main event a bit of fun, the wand shoot. This is a target of a stake 4 ft high and 4 wide,(1m X 100mm). shot at increasing distances, starting at 10yds, 6 arrows - if you hit you go to the next round. Second round is 5yds further, repeating until only one archer hits. This year it was me at 35 yds, three distances were with my first arrow much to my amazement. Presidents Trophy The first real summer s day 23/24 deg C light winds, great day for shooting. SO WERE WHERE YOU? Nineteen members turned out for the York/Hereford, some not realising it was the Presidents Trophy shoot. Some casualties during the day:- John Gibson with back problems, Ken with stamina problems, Tony Bailes, with sleep depration. But 16 made it to the end, most suffering from lack of practice/endurance training. Three longbows, 10 recurves and the rest compounds. Results were confused to say the least when I got it wrong for pure score (thanks Christine for putting me right). After that things improved and medals and trophies were handed out by our President who was let out for the day. Nice to see you Shelia and Ken. Six archers out shot their handicaps and a few PB s I am sure. The Bring and Buy sale held at the shoot was a complete waste of Ian & Colin s time. Nothing was sold! No one wants to buy second hand anymore? Full results of the shoot will be on the website soon. MKL Match home v HVB The full results will be up on the website soon. We won both pure and handicap. We are now 3 rd in the table for pure and 4 th in

handicap. Handicap team Anne Penny, Mike White, Sue Williams and Chris Bearman. Pure Score team Dave Corke, Chris Bearman, Steve Mills and Mike White. Well done all. Thanks to Stuart Evans (New Vice Captain) and Ian Sharp for organising the shooting and Kathy for the teas. Dunster Not much shooting by me, only the York on the Sunday the Somerset Champs and the 2 way Western on Wednesday. The main thing to say is that this was the best weather in 4 years at Dunster. Even the wind stayed away. Cle Jeffery adds his bit later. I have not got the results from the Somerset Champs yet but I did manage 4 th in the 2 way Western. Cecile mentioned that Dunster got the Clout shoot distance wrong - it was in metres not yds. 140 for the ladies and 180 for the gents. Having got it wrong once they compounded it by altering it one way correctly but wrong the other way. Not Dunster s best hour. The Family Day Not the best weather but all that came, I think, enjoyed. A few more helpers would have made things quicker and easier, thanks to Sally, Ian Sharp, Sandra and Jean. Kent WA (World Archery) 1440 This is a first for 22 years, a FITA round record status in Kent. It was shot to the new regulations, timing, and details of three/target in on end of six arrows. If that was not bad enough when we came down to the 50M the faces were not the normal 80cm BUT the cut down version showing the 6(Blue) down. So no 4, 3, 2 & 1. three/boss, one at the top and two side by side below. It felt like shooting a Portsmouth at 50M. This was OK for sighted archers but severely handicapped the Longbow/Barebow archers. Well World Archery (Ex FITA) do not recognise either discipline. And the French have never forgen us for Crecy, Pointer and Agincourt. I have looked into the scores lost by the longbows from my previous rounds of a plain FITA and the results are at 50m the combined score of the 1,2,3,& 4 s is 17 the combined at 30m was 23. Therefore a 40 points lost on average. That would have altered my score from 487 to 527 nearer my PB. Comments about the WA 1440 round are requested by Kent. This will be my observation. It turns out that an alternate format is within the rules, using a standard 80cm face for Longbow/Barebow, that would make sense. To close, there are English Archery Federation Awards to claim on this round only. The EAF Cross ranging from green to purple, as in the Archery UK mag. I am claiming the black at 450 but I could have claimed the blue. A tale of the invisible. Most of us will have heard of people having invisible friends in their early years.this is not that unusual but an Associate member of our club has been keeping secrets from us all. Karen Maytum has not an invisible friend but an invisible arrow, unfortunately she shot it last weekend. The noise was heard down the line, with a compound shot dry (without an arrow) it can be catastrophic. Not this time only the cables came off the pulleys. Next time Karen

check bow in hand, arrow in bow, pull back and release. Less panic, less noise and leave your invisible friend at home. Got to be a contender for the Best leg. Geoff B ************************ Calling ALL archers, Your Help Needed Please. The School fete is being held on Saturday 12 th July and as usual we have been asked to help by having our HAVE - A - Go stand. Please let me know if you could assist in the setting up and running of this have-a-go attraction. Help is needed from 11.00am until about 4.30 pm, any time that you can contribute would be welcome. We will be having the Children s castle as well as the usual adult competition. Please support us in raising extra funds for the school. I can be contacted on or r.king878@btinternet.com THERE WILL BE NO SHOOTING AT THE FIELD ON THIS DAY. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Kindest regards RON King ************************* Cle s bit We met Sandra, Lawrence and Sally at Dunster as a surprise. It was very nice to see them; they also looked after Masha whilst I was shooting, taking her to near by tourist attractions. Personally I was pleased with achieving a PB for the FITA scoring The Albion was funny as I hit a different target on the last end at 50yrds all arrows within the ten ring! Must stay focused!!! Jacqui Gould who travelled with us smashed several UK records for Barebow, she shot exceptionally well. Regards Cle ********************** Dunster Week 2014 from Dominic The holiday and shooting at Dunster this year, was for me very enjoyable once again. I may have learnt a few things from going, and during the week I was able to work on improving my shots. I did not shoot on the Sunday, which is the Somerset Championships - however, seeing people coming back from that with a lot of colour from the sunshine, helped me prepare for the week (lots of water and suntan lotion). Already hearing that Jacqui Gould from Crown Archers had got a National Record for Barebow that Sunday. For the Dunster week, we are typically told it will rain a lot. One of the helpers at the event had indicated that this year was the best weather they have had for 30 years. Though there were days of fairly strong wind, but as it is close to Minehead that should be expected. On the Monday, I found out that the 2 bow SKB cases, are very very heavy, however, they just about fit in the back of my Skoda Octavia ( upright near the rear wheel arches ) I shot the 70 meters FITA on the Monday, and one of the ladies on the target, was a GB team barebow field archer - who was

going to be off to shoot in Estonia. Some impresse scores (from others), a lot of double and triple checking on a Ladies Recurve score of 1168, however the number was correct. I understand that Jacqui Gould got a National Record again for barebow that day. Tuesday, most of us shot the Albion round. At the end of that day, they usually have an auction of scores - suffice to say Jacqui Gould got a win on that (choice was Wine or A large Toblerone), with her third National Record for barebow. Wednesday, Longbow day, this was a bit of a strange one for me, as there were so many people who the last few days shot Barebow, Recurve, or Compound, were there with their Longbows. Some of the people were in costumes for the Victorian era, Medieval era, or it may even have been Steampunk. A Gentleman got a 3 gold end at the 60 yard distance, and a hat was put round the 180 (ish) archers present. He was likely laden with coins as the hat was brimming with coins. Thursday, Clout day, again, some very impresse shots from some of the archers. And very good arrow dodging from the Pigeons and the Seagulls. It was interesting that most of the archers missed the Pin, on the sighters, as it was set at 219 yards not 180 yards. Though that was overcome. I did not shoot on our last day, which was the Friday (ging other people a chance at being last in the results), but was able to try some (very small amount) of the Cheddar Valley cider, which is very nice, drinkable, and quite strong. There are also Hereford and York, and shorter rounds to be shot on the Saturday and Sunday. The atmosphere of the Dunster Archery week is good, most people are helpful, the Judges are friendly and helpful, and to keep them involved, they get to use their red pens quite a bit. It was nice to be at the Dunster event, with the Archers from Allington Castle Archers - and that one from Crown Archers. 7 Another chunk of info. for the newer archer, from Karen this time. For those of you just starting out, filling in a competition entry form might seem difficult, but it s quite easy when you know how. Most are set out in roughly the same format, with very minor differences. First, check whether you are capable of shooting the rounds to be shot at the competition. It is no use booking yourself in to shoot 100 yards if you only have a bow capable of reaching 50 yards, or you have only ever shot 50 yards! Also, check that you have the stamina for shooting the number of arrows. Don t attempt to shoot 12 dozen if you have only ever shot 6 dozen. You need stamina to shoot 12 dozen. (See below -0 these are all 8 dozen rounds and would be suitable if you had only ever shot 6 dozen rounds.) Rounds: New Western (100/80yds)New Western (80/60yds)Long Western (60/50yds) Western (50/40yds)Junior Western (40/30yds)Short Junior Western Not all entry forms will actually tell you the distances/number of arrows involved, so check your list of rounds in the Archery GB Rules of Shooting/Shooting Administrate Procedures which can be downloaded from the Archery GB website. Next, check the closing date. There is always a closing date. If you are very close to the closing date on the entry form it may well be a good idea to telephone the organiser if you REALLY want to shoot. Competition organisers often have last minute places. Please do not book yourself in if you have no intention of turning up you may be depring someone of a place who genuinely wanted to shoot that competition. Remember, if you do book in late by phone, check that there is no late entry fee associated with booking in after the closing date. Some shoots charge an extra amount for late bookings. Again, check whether you can pay on the day when you arre at the shoot (if too late to post form/fee) and make sure you pay on booking in. Do not make the organiser chase you for money. When filling out the entry form, complete the columns/boxes as follows:- Remember to send with your entry form two self addressed stamped envelopes big enough to accommodate a piece of A4 paper folded three times across its width (approximately 4x9 ½ inches). On envelope should have on it below the address T/L! (for target list) and the second should have Res (for receing a copy of the results sheet). Some Tournament Organisers now offer the ability to recee both these items by , so if this is the case, be sure to include your address. Check that the competition is in your area, or if not, that you are prepared to travel. If travelling, do your homework and find out where the shoot is being held and plan your journey, allowing yourself plenty of time to arre. You need to be there approximately one hour before the time gen for assembly. This will allow you time to put up your shelter/bvy, check out the facilities for refreshments/toilets and check that you have no problems with your equipment. Allowing this hour before start of shooting will enable you to fix any minor problems you may have (and, of course, you can socialise a bit!). Right, so you are ready to send your form. You should therefore have:-

1. Entry form (duly completed), including your contact details etc. 2. Cheque (made payable to the correct addressee and in the correct amount). 3. Two self addressed envelopes for the target list and results to be sent to you. (By sending an envelope for a target list you will know your entry has been receed when you recee the target list back in the post a few days before the competition is due to go ahead.) Keep a copy of the form for your reference/any queries. Name Junior D.O.B. Round Archery GB Number Recurve/Compound/ Longbow/Barebow i ii iii v vi Fee TOTAL i ii iii Your name If you are completing on behalf of a junior archer inserting their age is vitally important so that they can be placed into their correct age group. They may be denied an award if this is not completed correctly. This is the round you wish to shoot. See my note above re. the distances/number of arrows you are capable of shooting. This is taken from your Archery GB membership card gen to you shortly after you joined your Club. If you only have a temporary card/number then insert that here. If you have not receed your GNAS card then please be prepared to take your card to the shoot on the day to ge the organiser the details then. This is the type or class of bow you will be shooting. If you are shooting an Olympic style bow with recurved limbs then put R/C or recurve. If you are shooting a longbow, put L/B or Longbow. If you are shooting a compound bow (with wheels and cams), put Comp or Compound. If you are shooting barebow (Olympic without sight etc.), put B/B or Barebow. Put your total fee in here. On most occasions there will be a different fee for adults and juniors. Remember to enter the correct amounts. If you are doing a double round (i.e. a Worcester in the morning and a Portsmouth (indoor rounds) in the afternoon, or two Portsmouth rounds) then remember to insert the correct fee for a double round.
