2 Club News John J. Feole, Club Manager Dear Kings Creek Members, Off-season? If this is our off-season, we can t wait to see what the season will bring! The level of activity in the club during January has been far greater than in previous years. The trend continues and the vast majority of our events are extremely well-attended. The management team remains focused on its mission to search for opportunities to introduce additional events to keep our calendars fresh. We ve enjoyed a great deal of satisfaction recently listening to the membership as they rave about the action stations Chef Phil introduced for Taco and Fajita and Asian Nights. This time of the year we re able to utilize the space by the fireplace in the casual for our food stations. The majority of the food selections and sauces are house made from scratch and freshly cooked to order. Please check our monthly calendars or the monitor in the hallway and TV in the Eagles Nest and you will find our flyers scrolling across the screen for our holiday theme events and many new club events. Valentine s weekend is just around the corner, we ve added a Sunday Champagne Brunch later in February, Fresh Fish Fridays will begin in March and St. Pat s will be here before we know it. Aside from the ever-popular Prime Rib and Steak Nights, we plan to feature a monthly tasting of some type wine, bourbon, scotch, tequila and beer. You will also find family and kids events on a monthly basis throughout the year. Toward the end of this month we ve planned an Indoor Winter Carnival and in early March a Kids Movie Night in the casual room. An event we were finally able to schedule is music bingo or Mingo. All these events are creating a buzz in the air and the anticipation of what s next to come, for the membership. Some exciting news for the upcoming golf season. The Board of Directors has recently approved the purchase of a new beverage cart which should be delivered by April 1, if not before. Both of our existing beverage carts have experienced breakdowns and numerous costly repairs. One will be traded in, and the other will be kept for days when business demands two carts and during tournament play. We ve experienced issues with our wi-fi access points throughout the club. After a recent service visit, all are now back in operation and will be monitored and replaced when necessary. Later in the spring we are planning to add wi-fi service at the swimming pool and tennis courts. The beams at both entrances to the golf shop have been replaced and repaired. We re looking at new lighting solutions for those areas and as the weather improves, we ll be painting the beams and the white trim in those areas. As I look ahead to my second season, I have an ambitious list of goals which I m looking forward to tackling. Clubs are a work in progress. As soon as one goal or project is completed it s time to move on to the next challenge. One goal at the top of my list is to market this awesome club and to boost our membership levels to new heights. We have all the ingredients, exciting and fun events, quality and consistent food, a passionate team of professionals and an awesome membership that loves their club. Chef Phil is preparing some of the finest selection of food in the area and John D is committed to booking events for that much-needed revenue. Mark and his team are busy with winter projects that will enhance course conditions this season, Kevin is preparing for the season that will be here before we know it, and there s an endless effort by Barbara to keep our financial situation on track. It will take a team effort on all fronts and I could use your help. The Board recently approved two really great promotions, one for new Sports members and another for new Full Club members. We also have a new returning member policy. All programs are great values, and the promotions include unlimited member credits. There s no better time to join Kings Creek than now! Copies of both promotions can be picked up in the office and can be found on our weekly blast. By the way, look for the weekly s on Tuesday afternoons. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you know someone interested in membership. See you at the club! John Kings Creek Country Club would like to extend our deepest sympathy to David Shevock and his family on the loss of his wife, Susie Shevock 1
3 Food and Beverage John Drumheller, Food and Beverage Manager In Roman mythology, Cupid is the son of Venus, the goddess of love. In Greek mythology he was known as Eros, the son of Aphrodite. Unfortunately my quiver is void of any arrows possessing the magical power to cause one to fall in love, but I can point you in the direction of some people who obviously have captured some secret and have remained in love and together for quite some time. Congratulations this Valentine s month to Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs: 44 years, Mr. and Mrs. Seal: 45 years, Mr. and Mrs. Ferma: 45 years, Mr. and Mrs. Santarelli: 50 years this year!, Mr. and Mrs. Allen: 51 years, Mr. and Mrs. Musi: 54 years, Mr. and Mrs. Pezone: 54 years, and Mr. and Mrs. Billingsley: 54 years! Not a complete list by any stretch, but enough that if you are seeking expert advice on love, these are some of the people you should consult. I m sure that one of the keys, some of the people mentioned above would list, is good communication. I m sure Ann Landers probably suggested that at some point as well. Not that I m old enough to have read Ann Landers but Mr. Popham told me all about her. You know, the same guy that personally complained to John Hancock that he took up too much space when he signed the Constitution. At any rate, communication is one of the key components I m working on for I will be employing as many tools as I can to make sure the Membership is as informed as possible about Club events and happenings. My thanks to Diane Brooks, our Office Manager, who held my hand during my baby steps of sending out my first Constant Contact blast, as well as helping to introduce me to the Club s website and Facebook page. These are just some of the platforms I want to use. My thanks also to Jordan Allen, one of our bartenders and resident IT consultant, who has been patient and very giving of his time and expertise in helping to get the scrolling slide show that can now be viewed on the tv in the entrance hallway and also on the middle tv in the Eagles Nest. Golfers may have also noticed that as you enter and exit the door by the ice machine and coffee station that there are flyers posted on the bulletin board there too. Only a matter of time until Kevin asks for that space back. Maybe by then I will have been able to procure another board so that Members can continue to use that area as a source of information. However and whatever it takes, I want to get the word out, whatever that word may be! It s all about the Member experience and Mr. Feole and Chef Phil work very hard to continue to develop new events and improve on old ones and I just try to keep up and make Members aware. The monthly calendar and this newsletter also serve as other forums for me to try and keep the Membership informed. Starting with, we re having a Super Bowl Party! Great food, great fun, and according to Mr. Derrickson, a chance to see the greatest quarterback of all time, Tom Brady. Actually, I think Mr. Derrickson puts Tom Brady and Johnny Unitas on the same pedestal. Following the Super Bowl, you can turn your attention to Valentine s Day. I have seen and served Chef s menus since he came to Kings Creek and I m telling you that the Valentine s Specials Menu on the 10 th and 11 th of February is hands down one of the best menus he s ever done! If you re thinking about taking your spouse, significant other, partner, friend(s), or neighbor(s) out for Valentine s, Kings Creek is the place!! This menu will be available to view online and on flyers around the Clubhouse very soon and you have to see it. And on Saturday night the 11th I m introducing a brand new talent to Kings Creek, Aimee Gusky, on the recommendation of Randy Smith. She will provide live dinner music. She does light jazz along with other things, and if you feel so inclined you might just want to dance. I hear Bill Cooley is very light on his feet! Later in the month we re doing a Mardi Gras Happy Hour, a Steak Night, Burger Nights, Family Bingo Nights, a Spirits Tasting of High West bourbon, an Indoor Winter Carnival for kids, and a Sunday Champagne Brunch! Not enough? Okay, on the horizon in March is Kids Movie Night, Taco and Fajita Night, A Bridge and Board Game Saturday Lunch, Steak Night, Prime Rib Night, Fresh Fish Fridays, Comfort Food Night, Fisherman s Catch, St. Patrick s Day Weekend Specials, Cooking Class for Kids, Music Bingo, and I probably stilled missed something! Oh yeah, Dr. Emery is pitching an open mic night where Members can show off their own talent: Hmm Phew! I m out of breath. We are working hard to make Kings Creek a vibrant hub of activity all year round that offers something for everyone, and a place where all Members are welcomed and encouraged to participate. Cheers, John D. P.S. A whole Newsletter and I didn t once mention wine. I guarantee you there will always be wine specials and promotions! P.S.S. I m thinking of an idea about forming a Kings Creek History Committee to record the history of this Club. Mr. Hilderly and I have already had a brief conversation and he has agreed to help and Mr. Young has agreed as well. Anyone else interested and willing to help, please talk to me or send an and maybe we can get the ball rolling. 2

5 Superintendent s Report Mark Haschemeyer, Golf Course Superintendent Are you a Good Golfer? For the purpose of this article, consider the following definitions of good players and good golfers. Good players have low handicaps, usually hit the ball a mile, and occasionally post very low scores. Good golfers fill divots, repair ball marks, and practice good etiquette each and every time they are on the course. Anyone who has ever worked in golf course maintenance will verify that, unfortunately, the two terms are not mutually inclusive. For those who wish to become better golfers, here are the ways you can help your course the most. Filling Divots Golfers often ask if they should replace their divots, fill it with whatever has been provided in the divot buckets, or just leave it for the crew. Whether you fill the divot with divot mix or replace the divot, making the effort is what really counts. If you are unsure, fill the divot with the material provided by the maintenance staff. Replacing a divot is a good option as well, assuming the divot is deep enough to include a significant amount of soil. Without the soil, the divot quickly dries out and is pulled back out of the ground during the next mowing. Do Fill divot holes with the material provided by the maintenance staff. Don t Overfill the hole, which results in a sand mound that can dull or damage the mowing units. Ball Marks Few aspects of etiquette generate more discussion than the fixing of ball marks and even superintendents disagree on the best method of ball mark repair. The inability to agree on a single best method stems from the fact that ball marks are not all the same. On soft greens, a shot that descends from a very steep angle produces a deep, almost circular ball mark. On the same green, a shot that comes in low and hard will produce an elongated tearing of the green, and it often removes a plug of grass and soil. Ball marks on soft greens take time to repair properly. Compacted soil needs to be lifted gently and the raised sides of the ball mark need to be gently pushed back toward the center. The elongated mark needs to be kneaded back together by pushing in from the sides, stretching the turf rather than tearing it. Replacing removed turf seldom accomplishes much so it is best to leave it out. In contrast, very firm greens can resist ball marks so well that they can be hard to find at all. On such greens the marks will be slight indentations that require a minimum of effort to repair. These marks can be repaired with a very slight lifting to restore smoothness. Do Restore surface smoothness by gently pushing from the sides and, in some cases, gently lifting the compressed area. Don t Aggressively twist (like that so often used by pros on national television), which does more harm than good. 6 Golf News Kevin Wiest, PGA Golf Professional Learning Center practice times available The Learning Center is available for practice throughout the winter season. The Learning Center hours are Tuesday thru Sunday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Practice times can be made by calling the golf shop at You may book a half hour time slot. You may use the Learning Center for longer than a half hour if there is no one scheduled for the time after you. You may open the door to hit balls out onto the driving range or if it is too cold, hit into the net. Please contact the golf shop if you have any questions. Don't let rust set in on your game this offseason when you have the facility available for your use. Winter maintenance for your golf clubs The staff will be conducting routine checks of each individuals set of clubs in the bag room over the next couple of months. We will be replacing worn out or missing club shaft labels. We will be ordering any missing bag tags. We will also be conducting a review of your grips and sending out s with any recommendations we may have to help you prepare for the golf season. If you keep your golf clubs with you, now is a good time to do your own self-assessment and let us know how we can help. If you or any family member who plays golf is missing a bag tag, please let us know so we can get one ordered for you. It really helps our staff when there is a name associated with each incoming golf bag Golf Professional staff I am excited to announce that we have finalized our professional staff for the 2017 season. Chris Krueger, Brendan Blakeney, and Randy Fenimore will all be returning for next season. Eric Miller, a senior at Coastal Carolina, will be joining our team as our Seasonal Assistant Golf Professional from May through the end of October. Eric is from Hawley, Pennsylvania and has completed previous internships at Boulder Country Club, Rehoboth Beach Country Club, and The Country Club at Woodloch Springs. Benjamin Bruning joins our team as this year s summer intern from May until the middle of August. Ben is currently a Sophmore at Penn State University. He has previously been employed at Lakewood Country Club and Rehoboth Beach Country Club. We are excited to have these gentlemen join our team in May. Recap from the 2017 PGA Merchandise Show It has been awhile since the PGA Merchandise Show had an opening like it did this year. TaylorMade Golf announced that Tiger Woods would be joining their team. That is big news for them as they are a company currently up for sale. This will certainly help them solidify a buyer. TaylorMade launched their new line of M1 and M2 clubs. Callaway introduced their Epic driver and fairway woods. Titleist displayed their new Prov1 and Prov1x golf balls and their new 917 driver and fairway woods. Cobra is bringing a new line of clubs called King F7 One Length which is a set of irons that is all the same length. In the next month or so, the fitting components from all vendors will be arriving. We will be able to properly fit you into this new equipment if you need it. We are always available to test your current equipment against any new technology to see if it may help you improve your score. Also, the demo day has been secured with each company. We will have all companies at Kings Creek from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Friday, June 2 nd. This doesn t mean that you have to wait until then to try new equipment. This is a day where you can spend some time going to each vendor and getting fit from one of their specialists. Apparel continues to impress me with the color stories and designs that each company creates year after year. Men s apparel had stellar lines from Peter Millar, FootJoy, and Under Armour. A potential new outerwear company SunIce was very impressive and so was Columbia Sportswear with their Omni heat technology. Ladies lines from FootJoy, Jofit, EP Pro, Under Armour and Sport Haley continue to a great job with their design. Chase 54 is a new line that will be coming into the golf shop in the early summer. Again, SunIce outerwear for ladies could be a great new fit for our membership. Sketchers footwear had some very lightweight shoes which will make its debut into our shop in May. As always, if you find a product in a golf shop that you think could be a good fit for Kings Creek, please let me know. I can t carry everything, but I want to carry what the majority of our membership would like in the shop. 6
7 Cont d USGA Rules of Golf changes Each year the United States Golf Association evaluates its rules and makes modifications it deems necessary. Since we issue USGA handicaps we must follow their guidelines and any modifications they make with regards to the Rules of Golf and/or Rules for Handicapping. Please note that we do not have a choice to follow their rules or not. You may visit USGA.org to find everything you would ever want to know regarding the Rules of Golf and the Handicapping procedures for daily and tournament play. Beginning January 1, 2017 the following local rule will be added to our local rules sheet. Accidental Movement of a Ball on a Putting Green Rules 18-2, 18-3 and 20-1 are modified as follows: When a player s ball lies on the putting green, there is not a penalty if the ball or ball-marker is accidentally moved by the player, his/her partner, his/her opponent, or any of their caddies or equipment. The moved ball or ball marker must be replaced as provided in Rules 18-2, 18-3, and This Local Rule applies only when the player s ball or ball-marker lies on the putting green and any movement is accidental. Note: If it is determined that a player s ball on the putting green was moved as a result of wind, water or some other natural cause such as the effects of gravity, the ball must be played as it lies from its new location. A ball-marker moved in such circumstances is replaced.
