We hope tht they, s well s ll the older members, will spred the messge brod tht there exists here in New Englnd the oldest nd lrgest of the sectionl greenkeepers' clubs, designed to help the greenkeepers themselves nd hence to improve Greenkeeping. There re mny greenkeepers in New Englnd not yet members of the club, whom the club needs, nd who need the club. Will you help them? Will you help to improve your club? It is not the policy of the Greenkeepers Club to recommend greenkeepers for positions. The club is, however, lwys gld to bring together clubs desiring greenkeepers nd greenkeepers desiring positions. The group insurnce s proposed for the club is indeed worthy of considertion. The cost per member is low. No medicl exmintion is necessry. The pln is dopted yerly, so tht the club could drop it if it sw fit on ny yerly nniversry. We hope tht ll who hve not returned their bllots will do so t once, so tht this pln my be crried out, nd ll members benefit. OBSERVATIONS ON GANG AND UNIT SYSTEMS There cn be no set system for use on the golf course dy fter dy, becuse so mny fctors cn chnge it. There cn be, however, generl system, to be followed most of the time. The unit system, so-clled, gives ech mn section to cre for s fr s possible. The gng system divides the course into two sections usully nd gng tkes cre of ech section. Usully the system of hndling lbor on the golf course resolves itself into combintion of these two systems. The success of the unit system depends on keeping old men from yer to yer; experience is necessry. Where it is necessry to brek in new hnds from yer to yer, the gng system usully works better. John Shnhn t Breburn hs gng of three men for ech nine holes, three greens ech. These green men wter in the morning whenever necessry, fix the tees nd trps on their holes, cut their greens, nd re done by roon. In the fternoon, they cut their tees twice week, lso fill divots in the tees, screen lom, etc. Fourth nd fifth men on ech section do the rough work. Two trctor men cre for ll the firwys, nd prts of the rough. Frnk Wilson hs Chrles River divided into units of three holes ech, one mn per unit. In morning they wter, rke trps, chnge mrkers, fill divots, mow greens, nd re through by noon. In the fternoon they do generl work, cut their tees, etc. Two men run trctors, one cutting firwys, the other rough. These men work in the shop in their spre time. One mn mows round greens where trctor doesn't rech. A floting crew of two go nywhere on course where rough needs mowing or where section men need help. At Woodlnd, Crl Tret hs greensmen looking fter sections of four holes ech. When wtering is necessry it is done t 5 A. M., the men tking turns wtering, nd then tke the fternoon off. Greensmen cut greens first, then look fter rough, trps, wter tees when necessry, etc. Two men cut tees, wter, do rough cutting, etc. Another mn runs trctor, nd nother spends hlf time on trctor, rest in shop. The blnce of gng is floting gng, to do whtever is necessry. One of this floting gng chnges the cups whenever needed. Robert Mitchell hs the following to dd. HANDLING MEN ON THE GOLF COURSE I hve been sked to write bout the hndling of men on the golf course. I think the individul greenskeeper should hndle his men the wy he thinks best. One reson for this is tht there re very few golf courses tht crry the sme number of men, therefore there cn be no fixed rule. I hve twelve men this seson. Six men cut the greens in the forenoon. The course is split into two nines, lrge putting green goes with wht we cll the smller nine. Three men nd two mowers tke ech

3 3 NEWSLETTER side, greens re swept before they re cut. The trctor tkes mn, nd when he is not cutting grss, there is some other job witing for him. We hve horse nd triplex mower tht re used where trctor cnnot rech. The horse is lso used for huling snd to trps, topdressing for greens, nd some rough cutting. It tkes mn on our trps most of the time, they need fixing often s we hve lot of ply. The tees re cut three or four times week; two men cut ll the tees in forenoon. We wter quite lot until ten o'clock when it is needed. All rough hnd mowing, mowing round greens, divot filling, turf gr- ^ dens, nd the hundred nd one other jobs re tken cre of in the fternoon. Are we wise to use velvet bent or creeping bent or ny grss decidedly different to ptch our greens? Those of us who hve propgted velvet bent or creeping bent or ny grss different from our greens, nd used it, hve "ptch-work" greens. Should we not stick to our originl grss for nurseries to supply ptching mteril until we re redy to chnge over t lest whole green? Where bents come into mixed grss green from seed they re not s noticble s when ptched in; they blend with the originl grss. Four inch plugs of velvet bent, spttered over green, soon blend, nd merely look like dp- pled horse. This is, of course, mtter of personl opinion, but worth considering before mking "crzy quilt" of our greens. While I do not gree with the impliction tht Superintendent is better title thn Greenkeeper the bsic thought behind the editoril is not only sound, but vitl, to us nd our profession. How the term Greenkeeper cme into use nd wht it my or my not stnd for t the present time is of reltively little importnce. However; cn nyone think of title which so concisely nd descriptively covers the fundmentls of our profession s keepers-of-the-greens? Innumerble duties nd detils hve been dded to our work but first, lst, nd lwys, we re keepers-of-the-greens. On the condition of our greens depends ll our mteril success nd professionl reputtion. Superintendent: Consider for moment how mny nd vried re the occuptions this title covers. It is bout s distinctive s the nme Smith in city directory nd certinly no more descriptive. Th" title should be Greenskeeper nd the "dignity nd qulity of the work done" must nd cn come only from within. Success in tree plnting depends on three min fctors, proper conditions for growth, timely nd intelligent cre, nd the selection of proper vriety. In ll sections trees differ gretly in the time when they put out their leves in the spring nd lose them in the fll. Owing to the gret vriety of conditions to be met long our firwys it is impossible for ny one kind of tree to succeed in ll plces. It sometimes hppens, tht the kind of trees desired cnnot be procured t resonble prices nd re not lwys in the best condition when received. In hving nursery it requires some time nd ttention nd lbor but it is not difficult. The two min steps necessry re the procuring of seed nd cring for the plnttion. Trees chosen with the object of plnting should be determined by their dptbility to the climte nd soil, nd by their resistnce to serious diseses or to insect ttck. Seeds cn be collected from trees in the loclity, or purchsed. To grow helthy nd vigorous trees, the nursery should be locted where the lnd is resonbly level nd well drined on Sndy lom. A nursery should if possible be within rech of your wter system, becuse wter is essentil for stisfctory results. The soil should be prepred with s much cre s for grss nursery. CHANGES AT THE RHODE ISLAND COUNTRY CLUB The verge plyer plying round the course t the Rhode Islnd Country Club, thinks the lyout is stiff enough, nd yet, Tom Glvin, cting on dvice of Mr. Donld J. Ross, the golf rchitect, is now busy, nd expects to be busy ll Winter, on new work designed to improve nd stiffen the course. These chnges re being mde with the ide of mking the best possible course on the loction. However, the chnges being mde, nd to be mde, re not designed to mke the course hrder for the verge plyer, but re especilly designed for tournment ply. The eighth hole is to be lengthened from 471 yrds to nerly 500 yrds. Tom hs lredy mde new green for this hole, bck bit from the former site, nd rised two feet in the rer no give pproch shots better "hold". The new green required 1600 squre feet more sod thn the old green. Plns on this hole lso cll for new tee for tournment ply, nd the cutting wy of the fce of the trp in front of the wter hzrd so s to show the hzrd. The tenth green hs been widened fifteen feet on the left side to give more cupping spce. The eleventh green is to be extended bout fifteen feet in front s well s in the rer. The eleventh tee is to be further lengthened, nd new tee for tournment ply is to be built on the twelfth. With ll this work lid out it looks like busy seson for Tom nd his crew! The October meeting of the Club ws held t the Woodlnd Golf Club, Auburndle, Mss., on October 7. The Club Chmpionship ws won by Ted Swnson of the Ber Hill Country Club, Stonehm, with score of 79, winning from Clif Sowerby by one stroke. Net prizes were won by Howrd Frrnt, first, nd Pul Hyden, second. At business meeting following lunch nine new members were elected. The Bord of Directors met with Robert Mitchell t the Kernwood Country Club, Slem, on September 23, nd with Jim Sullivn t Wlthm on October 14. We noticed tht our new member nd friend, R. Wllce Peckhm of the Schuest Golf Club plyed in the Rhode Islnd Stte Open on October 21 nd 22. This Open, by the wy, ws new deprture in golf, we believe. It ws open to pros, in Rhode Islnd, nd to mteurs hndicpped ten or better. It consisted of seventy-two holes medl ply, with ply on four courses, one round on ech. The courses plyed were Agwm Hunt nd Wnnemoissett on Mondy, nd Rhode Islnd nd Metcomet on Tuesdy. We re in receipt of copy of the October issue of the "Pcific Greenkeeper", publiction recently strted by the Greenkeepers' Assocition of Southern Cliforni.
