Gyptone Curve - Bend Line 7 ACOUSTICS Sound absorbtion varies with design height, bending radius and shape, and any mineral wool backing. It is not possible to specify precise absorbtion values, since it is impossible to carry out relevant measurements. Sound absorbtion data for similar flat boards with equivalent patterns should be used for gauidance. SPECIFICATION Fix Gyptone Bend Line 7 ceiling tiles onto a Donn T37K flush plastered ceiling grid, consisting of T37K (3600) main tees and T32K (1200) cross tees. FIXING Gyptone Bend is fixed to pre-curved sections using screws, and the boards cannot be removed. SURFACE Gyptone Bend is supplied unfinished. Painting is carried out in-situ after joint filling. The boards are painted using a roller; they must not be spray painted, since this sriously impairs their sound absorbtion. The product range for Gyptone Bend comprises one standard patern - Line 7 - with slotted perforations and tapered long edges. Gyptone Curve - Bend Line 7 Gyptone Bend is only 6.5 mm thick and allows the creation of curved/arched shapes in the suspended ceiling. 10 Tee Systems RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE SUSPENSION OF TEE SYSTEMS (FIG E TO H) * Subject to loading detail suspension should not normally exceed mm centres. The suspension must not be out of plumb (vertical) more than 25 mm for each 150 mm of plenum depth and in no case should exceed 500 mm to a mm depth. Whenever above is exceeded and/or when the hanger suspension is more than mm long, then a sub grid is recommended. Should suspension be vertical then a mm drop would be acceptable using hanger strap. Sub grid, when used, should be formed using Burgess Channel. In no case should suspension be from other services in the ceiling void. A hanger suspension point within 150mm of each side of the main tee joint must be installed with Fire Rated Grid. A hanger suspension point within 400 mm from the wall angle or shadow moulding must be installed on main tees. Where cut cross tees exceed 600 mm and rest on the cornice, these should have additional suspension. Where pop rivets are used these should be steel not aluminium and with shear strength 3 times that of the maximum allowed ceiling load. When securing wire to tee it should be wound tightly around itself at least 3 times. Should the ceiling mass exceed 20kg/m 2 and a sub grid is required then a consulting engineer should recommend suitable suspension. *(Fig. h) Typical suspension for eaves and overhangs. 11 Exposed Grid System INSTALLATION OF THE EXPOSED GRID SYSTEM INTRODUCTION The following is a step by step procedure for layingout, installing, and leveling an exposed, suspended grid. For the purpose of explaining the installation techniques we assume an installation of an exposed grid system, centred in a large area, with lay-in light fixtures and boards, wire hung at standard spacing mm centre. This will not, nor was it intended, to solve field problems, but will provide a general sequence to follow for those unfamiliar with the installation of exposed grids. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE STEP 1 - WALL MOULDING Since the wall moulding will be used to establish the ceiling plane (height) and level, reasonable care must be taken during the installation. To start the installation, the levelling can be done from the floor in the form of bench marks established with a water level and then projected up to the required ceiling height by means of a story pole. Bench marks are marks on the walls of a room within easy reach when standing on the floor to allow all leveling to be done without the need of ladders or scaffolds. (See fig.1). A water level is a transparent hose, filled with water and open on both ends. When one end of the hose is positioned so that the water in the hose aligns with a bench mark and a second mark is made at the level of the water at the other end, the two marks will be level thus, a series of bench marks can be made around the room all level with one another. Once the bench marks have been established, they can be projected up to the required ceiling line by means of a story pole. This is a wood or metal pole with a marking device (pencil) mounted at one end and a movable pivot point at the other. The distance between the pivot point and the marker is set for the distance from the bench marks to the ceiling line. By holding the pivot point on the bench mark with the story pole projecting upward, it is possible to mark the ceiling line while standing on the floor. Chalk lines can be snapped at the ceiling marks to provide a guide for the installation of the wall moulding. Fig. 1 CL Fig. 2 Bench marks Floor Level M6 Cornice

Exposed Grid System The LM 625 or LSM 25 wall angles can now be fixed to the walls. Wall mouldings are attached to the walls at the specified height. CORNICE FIXING METHODS 1. Nails for installing wall mouldings to brick or concrete walls. 2. Rawls or tappets for attaching wall mouldings to glazed tile or similar wall surfaces. 3. Molly bolts - for drywall construction. STEP 2 - LAYOUT (FIG 3). The grid must be centred in the room. It will be necessary to establish the room centre line in both directions. It is then possible to measure over from the centre line (in even module spacing) to determine where the first row (from the wall) of main tees or cross tees is to be installed. Dry lines can be erected where the edges (towards the centre of the room) of the first row of main or cross tees will be. A: First main tee to go along this line - butted to east wall - with cross tee hole above intersection line. B: Use self tapping screws into side of deck flute or drilled pin into concrete flute. Loop wire around body of screw or through hole in pin and wrap end around main wire. C: Loop wire over bottom cords of joist and wrap end around main wire. D: Pound an 8-P or larger nail into joist approximately 1/3 up from bottom hole nail at angle when installing. Wrap wire around nail and around main body then bend nail up with hammer to trap wire. E: Insert wire through hanger hole in bulb of tee. Adjust tee to proper level and wrap end of wire around main body at least (3) times. NOTE: Keep tension on wire as tie is made to prevent sag when tiles and light fixtures are installed. Cut the hanger wires to a length that allows them to hang approximately 200 mm below the ceiling plane. This allows enough wire to tie to the main tees. B: First cross tee will go here - butting south wall & locked into hole in main tee above intersection line. At this point a check must be made to ensure that the two dry lines are perpendicular to each other so the grid will be square. If they are not perpendicular to one another, corrections must be made by adjusting the shorter of the two lines. You now have two dry lines (representing the first row of cross tees and the first row of main tees) intersecting near one corner of the room where the first row of cross tees will intersect the first row of main tees. STEP 3 - HANGER WIRES (Fig 4,5,6) Fig. 3 Fig. 4 W Main Tee Dry Line Metal or Concrete Deck N S Cross Tee Dry Line a b 90 o E The hanger wires should be 2,5 mm pre-straightened "L" Bracket galvanised wire and must be secured to the supporting structure. Alternative suspension can be used i.e. 19 mm wide hanger strap, wire suspension hooks with spring clip or galvanised angle (min. 20 x 20 x 0,5 mm). A: Secure L bracket to metal deck with sheet metal screws & up concrete with powder actuated pins. Fig. 5 Fig. 6 Bar Joist Wood Joist Nail (8-P or larger) Then loop wire through hole in L bracket and wind wire around main wire.

Exposed Grid System NOTE: The hanger wires should be installed mm maximum on centre in both directions over the proposed main tee locations and must not be out of plumb more than 25 mm for each 150 mm of plenum depth. Should the hanger wire suspension be more than mm then a subgrid must be installed. (For more details on suspended methods & tee loading, contact your nearest office). STEP 4 - HANG GRID (Fig.7) Hang the first main tee slightly above ceiling plane line, (loosely loop wires through hanger hole in top of tee section) directly over the dry line that runs parallel to the main tees. Trim the end of the tee that intersects the wall moulding until a cross tee hole aligns with the dry line that is perpendicular to the main tee. Take a cross tee and turn it up-side-down and abut on end of the square bulb section against the lower 25 mm flange of the wall moulding. Cut the cross tee where it intersects the dry line parallel to the main tee. (Fig.8). Invert tee & butt bulb to lower flange of wall moulding - cut tee face at dry line. NOTE: Angle cut slightly to prevent interference between bulb and moulding at wall. Fig. 9 Step 2 D Pop Rivet E Turn cross tee end-for-end and rest cut end on the wall moulding. Insert opposite end of cross tee into the cross tee punch out in the main tee that is directly over the dry line that is perpendicular to the main tee. Cross Tee Cross Tee Dry Line Main Tee Insert Cross Tee into left hand side of Cross Tee hole in Main Tee

Exposed Grid System This will space the main tee from the wall so that the edge of the tee (away from the wall) will align with the dry line. Repeat this process of cutting cross tees for every fourth hole (600 mm) in the main tee. The cut ends of the main and cross tees must be secured to the wall moulding with a suitable fastener (pop rivet) to prevent movement. You may now install more main tees adjacent to the first by trimming the end that goes into the moulding so that the cross tee hole aligns with the dry line and loosely hang as described previously. These main tees are spaced from the first main tee and each other with cross tees installed between and perpendicular to them to form continuous rows with cross tees cut into the wall moulding. After installing as many main tees (side-by-side) as is practical, without moving the scaffold, use the water level to level the main tee (farthest from the wall) with the wall moulding. Tie that main tee firmly in place. Now stretch a dry line from that main tee, under the rest of the main tees, to the wall angle. (Fig. 10). You can now level the rest of the main tees to this dry line, and tie them firmly in place. You are now ready to install more main tees with the integral splice at the end interlocked with the previous row instead of cutting into the wall moulding. (Fig. 11). Install this second row as you did the first in regards to cutting cross tees into the wall and levelling. Continue to install rows in this manner until you have traversed the length of the room. (Fig. 12). To cut in the last main tee, turn the tee up-side-down and butt the tongue that protrudes from the end of the main tee against the terminating wall. While holding the main tee in this position and in line with the main tee that it will lock to, cut it off at a point directly below the slot in the end of the installed main tee. Suspended ceilings are not designed to take the weight of services personal walking around on its top surface, and such if this is a requirement, a separate catwalk system must be provided.

Suspension of Donn Tee Systems SUB GRID SYSTEMS Sub grid construction is required when: Hanger is out of plumb by more than 25mm for 150mm depth and ceiling is suspended by more than 2.0m. Where a ceiling mass exceeds 20kg m 2 a sub grid is required, a consultant engineer would need to recommend a suitable suspension system. The ceiling plum suspension height exceeds 4.0m.

Suspension of Donn Tee Systems cont. SUSPENSION COMPONENTS Suspension components will consist of a number of different items which when combines/joined or used in conjunction with each other will create an effective suspension system. The weakest component/joint in the system will determine the breaking point of the suspension system. This information is available from the various manufacturers. Often a substitute product will be used to suspend a ceiling grid system. The on us is on the Specifier to ensure that components, which comply with minimum standards, are used. Guidance can be obtained by the grid manufacturers. Typical standard/approved components are: Pre-stretched galvanized hanger wire 2.5mm Galvanized 1.9m wide x 0.8mm thick steel hanger strap Galvanized angle 20mm x 20mm Galvanized angle 25mm x 25mm Galvanized angle 50mm x 25mm

Suspension of Donn Tee Systems cont. Subject to loading detail suspension spacing should not normally exceed 1200mm centres. (T80 - Longspan = 2400mm suspension spacing - max 2700mm with light tiles.) The suspension must not be out of plumb (vertical) more than 25mm for each 150mm of plenum depth and in no case should exceed 500mm to a 3000mm depth. Whenever above is exceeded a sub grid is recommended. Should suspension be vertical, then longer drop would be acceptable, provided Hanger Strap is used as one continuous piece (site engineer should be consulted in this regard). In no case should suspension be from other services in the ceiling void. A hanger suspension point within 150mm each side of the main tee joint must be installed with Fire Rated Grid. A hanger suspension point within 300mm from the wall angle or shadow moulding must be installed on main tees. Where cut cross tees exceed 600mm and rest on the cornice, these should have additional suspension. Where pop rivets are used these must be steel not aluminium and with sheer strength 3 times that of the maximum allowed ceiling load. Two steel pop rivets to be fixed to the tee. When securing wire to tee it should be wound tightly around itself at least 3 times. Should the ceiling mass exceed 20kg/m 2 and a sub grid is required then a consulting engineer should recommend suitable suspension. Lay-in light fittings should be suspended at all four corners. Only galvanized angle should be used for the suspension of flush plastered ceilings. 2.5mm Galvanized wire cannot be used if suspension is more than 3000mm.

Suspension of Donn Tee Systems cont. SUSPENDED CEILING GRID The standard face widths of the grid system are 15.0mm, 24.0mm & 35.0mm. each width has its own preferred application, but no real construction criteria exists for their respective usage. i.e. a 15.0mm grid system will accept any lay tile size and a 25.0 & 35.0mm grid will do the same. However some revealed edged tiles will only fit into the narrow grid (15.0mm), we therefore recommend, that when specifying revealed edged tiles, that you check the correct grid for the particular tile. The wide grid (35.0mm) is also recommended in areas where additional support for the ceiling tile is required e.g. under outside overhangs, or where the nature of the tile makes accurate sizing of the tile difficult to control. The manufacturers can be contacted for a detailed installation process of suspended ceiling grid systems. Manufacturers test certificate can be requested for performance of grids. Grids must conform to BS Maximum spans of suspension on main tee: Manufacturers tee shall expand to maximum of 1.2m. for specialized spans contact the manufacturer for details. Junction between Perimeter Trims & Ceiling Grid: Greater than 600mm an additional suspension point should be added in. Sloped, Angled Other Ceiling levels:

Suspension of Donn Tee Systems cont. PERIMETER TRIMS Perimeter trims standard suspended ceilings: Perimeter trims for suspended ceilings can be the L - shape or the shadow line type (stepped). Perimeter trims Flush plaster suspended ceilings galvanized angle L shaped, or a shadow line type is used to create a shadow line which hides building imperfections. The perimeter trims are measured as an independent item in bills of quantityas no 2 areas will necessary yield the same usage of trims. FIXERS & FASTENERS

Technical Details System Performance DonnCeil ceiling systems should be installed in accordance with recommendations described within this brochure. System performance is based on the use of Donn branded components, any substitution of components will compromise performance and cannot be guaranteed and may result in failure under critical conditions. Site Storage and Handling Storage time on site should be as short as possible with environmental conditions as near as possible to those specified for occupancy. Any storage area should be clean, dry, secure and fully protected from the weather with cartons stored off the ground. Cartons of material should never be rolled, dropped or slid and under no circumstances used as a workbase or substitute for ladders, scaffolding etc. Installation Conditions Suspended ceilings form part of the decorative finish of a building and the conditions under which Donn systems are installed must take this into account. The ceiling erection should take place at a late stage in the building contract when the area will be clean and there is less likelihood of damage from other trades. NOTE: ALL CEILINGS SHOULD BE INSTALLED IN ACCOR- DANCE WITH THE CURRENT CODE OF PRACTICE FOR ACOUSTICAL CEILING INSTALLATION ADOPTED BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN BUILDING INTERIOR SYSTEMS ASSOCI- ATION (SABISA) AND THE MANUFACTURERS INSTRUC- TIONS. Dynamic Loads on Ceilings Care should be taken to ensure that the fixing used for suspension points (especially into concrete) should be able to support a safety factor of three times the design load of the ceiling. Suspended ceilings are not designed to take the weight of services personnel walking around on its top surface, if this is a requirement, a separate catwalk system must be provided. SPECIFICATIONS General Specification Supply and install Donn ceiling system as manufactured by Donn Products (Pty) Ltd.
