This event is going to focus on FUN as well as an incredible time of fellowship. The Extravaganza is open to our entire community, please feel free to invite everyone you know. Our hope is that this event will promote great family time. As each family puts together a team to join in on the competitions we hope you will get creative by making team shirts or creating unique team names. Enjoy time together by writing a speech, baking family favorites, building an egg drop apparatus, or balsa wood bridge, etc. If you, or someone you know, has a home business, please consider reserving a space for $70 to sell your goods. Pastor Wade at wnelson@tcsnd.org for approval and instructions. We will be offering up several competitions for each family team to enter. Each winning team will earn $500 cash or $1,000 scholarship toward the semester at WTCS. Your family team may enter in as many competitions as you would like, with a minimum of 2 entries for WTCS families. The competitions are: 1. Outdoor obstacle course 2. Speech competition 3. Egg drop competition 4. Balsa wood bridge build off 5. Crusader mile 6. Bake off Each competition will require a $125 entrance fee per family, with a minimum of two entries per WTCS family team. If you have multiple children who would like to enter a specific event, there is only one registration fee per family per event. WTCS families may choose not to participate by opting out of this fundraiser for $350. Enclosed in this packet are Donor Support Letters for your family to utilize in acquiring local Businesses to sponsor your Family Team. Registrations and fees are all due on Monday, May 1st, prior to the event on May 6th. A schedule of events will be available so that competitors and attendees will be able to enjoy each and every competition. Carnival activities will include bounce houses, a dunk tank, and so much more! Pastor Wade will be hosting an event informational meeting Tuesday, March 21 st, at 7:00 pm. Please come with any and all questions regarding this fundraiser. And thank you for your participation!
#1 Obstacle Course (sample picture not of actual course) The obstacle course will be set up on the WTCS football field. There will be a variety of obstacles built to be age appropriate. Each team will consist of three members, preferably family but friends are allowed. At least 1 student (or under 18 yr. old) and two others of any age. All three members must complete the course, as creatively as you are able. An adult could carry a 5 year old the entire way, for example. This is a timed event, the clock will stop once the entire team crosses the finish line. Complete instructions will be provided, and thoroughly gone over, at the actual event.
#2 Speech Competition Theme = Christ in me Rules 1. A two to four minute speech consisting of a minimum of 225 words. 2. Two double spaced copies of the speech provided for judges with a #12 font the day of contest 3. Speech should be memorized but 3 x 5 note cards may be utilized Judging 1. Content 2. Eye contact 3. Body posture 4. Delivery i.e. voice deflection, tone, passion etc. 5. Time deductions if less than two or more than four minutes in length
#3 Egg drop competition Participants will design and build an apparatus that will protect an egg from breaking as it free falls from a beginning height of approximately 8 feet. This is an individual event. Materials/Parameters 1. The apparatus may be constructed of any material except metal, glass or other shatterable material (for safety reasons). Failure to use approved materials will result in automatic disqualification. 2. The apparatus (without the egg) shall not exceed a weight of ½ a pound. Apparatus weighing more than.5 lbs will result in automatic disqualification. 3. The apparatus must fit completely inside of an 8 x 8 x 8 box. Apparatus that do not fit in within the prescribed space will result in automatic disqualification. 4. The apparatus must freefall without contacting team members, other persons or objects; no strings, chutes, etc. may be used. Tethers, parachutes and other air resistance devices are prohibited. 5. Containers must be designed so that the egg may be inserted easily before competing, and easily checked after the drop test. 6. The egg must stay inside the apparatus throughout the drop test. 7. Unique and innovative design will be an important part of the competition. Egg The egg, provided by the contestant, must be a grade A raw egg. Any manipulation of the egg to alter its physical properties will result in automatic disqualification. Height of Drop The apparatus will be dropped by a judge from a beginning height of approximately 8 feet. The unbroken eggs will continue to be dropped from greater heights until only 1 unbroken egg remains. If the height reaches an unsafe level, with multiple unbroken eggs remaining, the apparatus with the lowest weight will be declared the winner. Judging 1. The apparatus must allow for the egg provided to be unbroken and un-cracked upon completion of each drop test. Participants will remove the egg from the apparatus and show it to the judge for verification. Only the judge determines whether the egg survived the drop test. 2. The judge has final say as to the winner of the contest.
#4 BALSA WOOD BRIDGE DESIGN RULES MATERIALS: Balsa wood and glue are the only materials to be used. Balsa wood: The maximum size of balsa wood used to construct the bridge is 1/8 x 1/4. Pieces of smaller dimension may be used to economize on weight. Wide pieces may be fabricated by gluing narrower pieces together. Glue: Bridges may be built using any type of glue. The following should be considered when choosing the glue for use: 1. It is strongly suggested that glues like Elmer's should be used, however the "set up" or "drying time" is usually 30 to 45 minutes and they do not achieve full strength for 24 hours or more. That means you will have to hold the pieces of your bridge together for a long time with your fingers or pins or clamps 2. ZAP A GAP, Krazy Glue, Super Glue or other glues which are known as CYANOACRYLATES can be used to construct the bridge since they "set up" or "dry" quickly, usually in less than 30 seconds. This allows you to move along quickly building your bridge. ZAP A GAP is usually much more expensive than the other glues. Both types are expensive, so be careful. A little goes a long way. 3. When using ZAP A GAP or similar glues it is important to have a de-bonder readily available since the glues set so quickly that fingers are often stuck to the bridge or to each other. Debonder is usually available at the store where the glue is purchased. DESIGN AND CONTEST RULES: 1. The bridge shall be designed and constructed by your family team. One of the most important things about this project is to learn the engineering team approach to solving problems. Working, as engineers do, in a team, will result in generating ideas and improving on your first thoughts and ideas in producing the finest bridge you can. 2. The bridge contest will be scored on the following four areas of achievement: A. Load capacity - The bridge will be loaded to determine how much weight it can support. B. Design 3. Dimensioning - Proper indication of the height, width and length of various parts of the bridge. 4. Appearance and neatness - Quality and cleanliness of the presentation. C. Craftsmanship - The workmanship and care taken in constructing the bridge. D. Originality - Imaginative or innovative concepts used in design and construction of the bridge. 3. The bridge must be "free standing". 4. The bridge must be constructed so that it rests on two surfaces spanning a 12 gap. This means the minimum "span" of the bridge is The maximum length of the bridge shall not exceed 16 and the width shall not exceed 3, and height of 4 8. Total weight of the bridge, including glue, may not exceed 1.25 ounces. 9. No fastening method other than mechanical interlock of the balsa pieces or glue is allowed. 10. The bridge may not be painted or coated in any way including coating of members with glue.
JUDGING: Bridges will be judged by an appointed adult. 1. Bridges will be visually inspected, measured and weighed for compliance to the rules. 2. Bridge design will be noted. 3. Points will be given for craftsmanship. 4. The bridge will be load tested after passing the weight, dimensional and materials examination. Bridges failing to pass these requirements will not be scored in the competition. The failed bridges may be load tested. 5. The load capacity test will be conducted as follows: A. The bridge will be placed on the testing stand consisting of two flat, level surfaces which will be level with respect to each other and separated by approximately 12. B. The testing load will be placed on the surface at the center of the span. C. A testing will consist of adding weight until all put 1 bridge fails. D. If there is more than one bridge which attains the same load capacity at failure, the position of an entry will be decided by comparing the efficiency of the bridges. The efficiency of each bridge will be determined by dividing the load at failure (in pounds) by the weight of the bridge (in ounces) multiplied by 16. SCORING: Points Craftsmanship 0 to 10 Originality 0 to 10 Design 0 to 10 Load Capacity Highest 50 2nd Highest 40 3rd Highest 35 4th Highest 30 All others 25 Approximate Balsa Wood Weights: 1/4" x 1/8 Balsa 36 long 4.74 Grams/36 stick (0.132 Gram/inch) 1/8 x 1/8 Balsa 36 long 2.00 Grams/36 stick (0.056 Gram/inch) You can calculate how much your bridge will weigh using this guide and measuring the lengths of the various wood sizes you intend to use in your design. Remember the weight of the glue usually is 15% of the weight of the completed bridge. The weight of the wood then would be 85% of 1.25 oz or about oz. Be careful! Wood can vary in weight in accordance with moisture content and the tree it is sawn from. The heartwood in the tree has greater density than the outer wood. It is a good idea to weight your bridge as you go along to make sure you stay within the 1.25 ounce limit. 1/4" x 1/8 Balsa wood strips 36 long can be purchase via Amazon, and other online sources
#5 Crusader Mile The Crusader Mile Fun Run will be a course mapped out around the WTCS football field area. The family team must consist of one student (or person under 18 yrs. Old) and one other team member, of any age. Both team members time will be noted. An average of the two times will be calculated to determine the winning team. There will be a handicap scale calculated, and provided at the event, to ensure young competitors have an equally fair opportunity to win.
#6 Bake-Off Contest 1. Contestants submission must come from your family. 2. Contestants may have only one entry, but multiple family members may enter 3. Submissions must be home cooked (not store bought). 4. Types of desserts that may be entered: a. Cakes b. Cookies c. Pies 5. Please do not submit anything that requires refrigeration. 6. All submissions will become property of WTCS. 7. Contestants may create/bake together as a family team. 8. On the day of judging, please submit your entry in its entirety, as it will be auctioned off, and submit a second (smaller sample) for the judges to taste. 9. Each contestant will be assigned a number for judging. Judging Submissions will be judged on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest. You will be judged on taste and appearance, by an appointed adult. The Contest Representative will tally all of their ballots. The contestant with the highest score will be the winner. Once results are announced, the baked goods will be auctioned off. There will be awards for the bake off winner & highest auctioned item winner. YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN. Rules are subject to change.
