Clubhouse News From the President Welcome back to the 2015 version of Lake View Country Club. I am delighted to inform you that your golf course has wintered very well.

The significant snow cover and of course, the installation of drainage on those surfaces is having the impact that was expected.

2 Clubhouse News From the President Welcome back to the 2015 version of Lake View Country Club. I am delighted to inform you that your golf course has wintered very well. The putting surfaces appear to have survived the elements in extremely good condition. The significant snow cover and of course, the installation of drainage on those surfaces is having the impact that was expected. You will also see some cosmetic improvements to the grill room as some painting and reconditioning is in process and should be completed by opening day. In addition, a more patron friendly bar will be installed at the end of April. This project is expected to take about a week for installation. Beverages will continue to be served throughout the process using the dining facility bar. Completion of the drainage project should take place in early Spring, weather permitting, and should have a very limited impact on play. We also welcome back the majority of our staff. Continuing as head golf professional will be Steve Crane; golf course superintendent, Gordon Seliga; chief chef, Rob Evers; and beverage, restaurant, and special events coordinator, Megan Kehl. I continue to believe that the quality of our product and service resides with the people that are committed to delivering on those things. We clearly have those people in place. Please plan on taking advantage of all the resources available to you. This year commences with a vastly improved outlook. I am quite certain there will continue to be challenges along the way, but we have successfully overcome the obstacles in the past and I am quite optimistic about our fortunes moving forward. Once again, we are fortunate to have conditions conducive to great golf and personnel in place to enhance the experience. Make sure you take advantage of the opportunity. I hope to see you very soon. Tony Huber, age 33, had worked on the grounds crew for the past four years. During that time, Tony had proven his dedication and loyalty over and over again by his hard work and his willingness to do whatever was required to get the job done. This often included filling in for another employee s absence on his scheduled day off. We could ALWAYS count on Tony and he rarely said no to a request in our efforts to make the golf course better. They say that no one is irreplaceable. In this case, Tony is irreplaceable. We may be able to hire someone to fill his position but they won t bring to the table the same efforts and devotion that Tony did. Tony will be missed by Lake View. He will be sadly missed by fiancé April Fisher, Lake View s full time housekeeper, and four children. Donations to his family will be accepted by Lake View Country Club. I ve had this same inquiry many times over the years and I thought I would re-post a blog entry I made in 2005 regarding this subject.

4 From our CGCS Superintendent Gordon Seliga What are those purple colored patches of turf on some of the greens, tees and fairways? Last fall I had some inquiries regarding the odd colored patches of turf on some of the greens. I ve had this same inquiry many times over the years and I thought I would re-post a blog entry I made in 2005 regarding this subject. During relatively warm sunny days (60 to 65 F) grass plants are actively photosynthesizing and creating photosynthates (sugars). At night the sugars are translocated down into the storage areas of the plant. However, if nighttime temperatures are cold as it often is in the fall and spring of the year, some of the sugars fail to translocate. The molecules left behind in the leaf attach to a pigment called anthrocyanin (purple or blue pigment). The buildup of anthrocyanin results in the expression of the purplish color you see on some areas of the turf. This purplish color will persist through the winter and into early spring. Typically, it s the creeping bentgrass that exhibits the purple colors and the degree of expression varies depending on the variety of bentgrass. Since our greens are primarily poa annua with splashes of bentgrass mixed in here and there, the purple patches stick out and look odd. Many times this is misdiagnosed as a disease or a nutrient deficiency when in fact it is simply a result of normal physiological processes brought on by cold temperatures. Don t fret the purple spots. As soon as the temps warm up and the grass starts growing again, we ll simply mow off the purple leaf tissue and expose the green grass below.

It can be difficult to hit long bunker far shot enough to get back to the hole. Using a less lofted club with less bounce will let you hit the ball farther with the same swing. Try it on the practice range first so you can determine how far the ball will go. LAKE VIEW LEAGUES We have several leagues available for your enjoyment. The leagues are open to all golf and social members. Social members have an annual fee of $225 for the 9 hole leagues and $450 for the ladies Tuesday 18 hole league. Each league also has a dues fee. Details included on the sign up on page 8.. GRIP SPECIAL Check your grips! Are yours worn or slippery? April is the time to have new grips installed. Save $1 on all grips. TEE IT FORWARD This program promoted by the PGA and USGA encourages more players to play the tees that best fit their game. If you are having difficulty reaching the greens in regulation or consistently using your fairway woods, try moving up to the next set of tees. You will enjoy the game more and you will play faster. We now have a new set of gold tees located between the white and red tees. DRIVING RANGE RULES The practice range will be open as soon as the ground is firm enough so the range balls will not plug. As a rule of thumb, the range is closed when carts are not allowed on the front nine. The range will close two hours before sunset on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. The following mornings are designated as mow days and the range must be picked clean. TEE TIMES WILL NOT BE REQUIRED IN APRIL Restricted tee times are enforced as per the Rules and Regulations in your Chip Shots. The pro shop will open at 12:00 on Mondays, 8:00 on Tuesdays-Fridays and at 7:00 on Saturdays & Sundays. CHARITY PRO AM FRIDAY, JUNE 5 The pro am raises several thousand dollars for local charities. The Committee will be meeting in early April to determine the worthy charities for the 2015 tournament. If you would like to recommend a charity, submit a proposal to Steve Crane by April 7. All members are invited to participate in the tournament. POSTING SCORES BEGINS APRIL 1 The first official day of the golf season as recognized by the West Penn Golf Association is April 1. All rounds played must be adjusted and entered in the computer. Rounds played in southern and western areas that were considered in season at the time of your round should be posted in the order they were played. You will need the date, course rating and the slope from each club. You can also post over the Internet by going to You will need your GHIN number. Posting Computers are available in the pro shop, and both locker rooms. Handicap cards can now be printed at the touch of a button. The pro shop terminal has a button labeled Handicap Card. Press it and your card automatically prints. We will again be using GHIN System offered through the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association. All scores must be adjusted before posting as per USGA Regulations. The pro shop staff will be glad to assist you with any questions. When posting your scores, be sure to post for the proper tees. The team scoring is based on the two lowest net scores for each hole and then applying the Modified Point System (5-Eagle, 2-Birdie, 0-Par, (-1)-Bogey, (-3)-Double Bogey). New members are welcome. If you have not had a chance to establish a handicap at Lake View, see Steve. The men begin play with a 9:00 shotgun start. Meet your teammates at an 8:00 continental breakfast, lunch follows play. Entry fee is $30. Optional Skin Games. CLUB STORAGE is available to all members. The pro shop staff will store and clean your clubs. The fee is $85 ( tax). Pull carts or electric carts are an additional $25. Pull carts ($35) and Electric carts ($40) without bag storage. Sorry, we do not store or charge batteries for the electric carts. The fee may be paid in the pro shop or billed through your Country Club account. LOCKERS are available in both the men s and ladies locker rooms. Annual fee is $75.. TITLEIST LOYALTY REWARD PROGRAM: Titleist is again offering the Pro V1 and Pro V1x special. Golfers that purchase three or more dozen golf balls will receive one dozen at no charge. Price is $48 per dozen. All golf balls must be personalized. Option #1: Standard play numbers: Low (1-4), high (5-8), or option #2: choose to have all the same # (1-9) or Double Digit Numbers (00, 10-99). A $3 per dozen up-charge fee applies on all option #2 orders. ORDERS must be placed by APRIL 11, Order by (steve@lakeviewcc.com), calling the pro shop, , or texting Include ball type (Pro V1 or Pro V1x), low # s (1-4), high # s (5-8), or all the same # (1-9, or double digit 00-99), ink color (black, blue, red, green, or pink), and personalization. RULES QUESTION Your ball lies on a cart path, you choose to take relief, can you drop on the side of the path that gives you the most relief? ANSWER: You do not have a choice. You must find the point that is nearest to your ball that offers total relief after you have taken your stance. You may then drop a ball within one club length of that point no nearer the hole. Total relief means the ball and your stance are not touching the cart path before and after your drop.
