Matt Clark continued the trend and now Joe Inman hopes to build even bigger. Over the last ten years, the program has won six conference championships, appeared in nine NCAA Regionals and four NCAA Championships. It has truly been an excellent decade. 2 Season Gets Underway with New Faces Looking for Same Result Coming off of their ninth NCAA Regionals appearance in 10 years, with six conference championships under their belt during that same time frame, it would appear that the men s golf team would be primed for a lot of the same. Although the hopes are that the result will end up being the same, the approach and road to an NCAA Championship appearance in May will be a lot different. To start off, Joe Inman was announced as the new head coach of the Panther program in August. Inman has already made an imprint on the team with the entire squad responding in a positive manner. Inman brings to State a career on the PGA and Champions Tour to State, including wins on each. His outgoing personality and ability to show a young team what it takes to win will be one of the keys to the upcoming season. He will be assisted by new assistant coach Ben Moody. Moody graduated from Alabama in the spring and was a part of a Crimson Tide squad that won six tournaments a year ago. Next, the Panthers had to replace Joel Sjoholm, the first-ever First Team All-American in Georgia State athletics history. Step in newcomers Tobias Rosendahl and Allen John, two international players with a ton of world-wide experience. Not to be lost in the mix is junior Tom Sherreard who finished 19th in The British Open this summer. Sherreard battled with the best in the world last July, tying with the likes of Phil Mickelson and U.S. Open runner-up Rocco Mediate. Combining the talents of the three international players on the roster should allow the Panthers to have a solid punch at the top of the line-up. Finally, add to the mix a young trio of Georgians with a year under their belt and the Panthers adventure back to the postseason is hopefully complete. Sophomores Alex Castro, Alan Fowler and Brent Paul all saw significant playing time last season, while Senior Tim Freund adds three years of leadership to the mix. Jared Cagle and Stephen Oakey, who both redshirted their first season, will also get into the line-up this fall and look to add depth to the squad of nine. The schedule will have some old favorites and some new challenges as well. The season starts on September 12th at the Carpet Capital Collegiate hosted by Georgia Tech. This will mark the third consecutive year that the Panthers have traveled up I-75 to Dalton for one of the premier early season events. The Panthers won the event the first time that they participated in That same year, Mark Haastrup took home the individual title against some of the top golfers in the country. The Panthers will then make their first-ever trip to Massachusetts for the Hartford Invitational at Ballymeade Country Club. After two weeks off, Georgia State will return to the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate on October 8th. State will conclude the fall season at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate, hosted by Michigan State at the Haig Pointe Club in Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. The event was originally scheduled to be played the first week of September, but had to be rescheduled due to Tropical Storm Hanna. With several newcomers to the team, the fall season should allow the Panthers to have a good idea of what will need to be worked on heading into another tough spring season. 2 The spring season gets underway February 14th at the SunTrust Gator Invitational. This will mark the ninth consecutive year that the Panthers have opened the spring at The Gator hosted by the University of Florida. The Panthers have finished as high as fourth in the star-studded field and have had some of their best all-time scores at the event. Just over a week later, State will return to Florida for the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at Sawgrass Country Club, located right across the street from the famed TPC of Sawgrass. This will mark the ninth consecutive year the Panthers have traveled to Ponte Vedra in the spring, having played in the John Hayt (formerly Mercedes Benz Collegiate) eight times and the Palencia Invitational once.

3 Season Preview Continued The middle of March will bring a new tournament to the schedule as the Panthers travel to south Georgia for the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern. The Schenkel is one of the premier spring events and brings in teams from throughout the country. To begin April, the Panthers will travel out I-20 for the Administaff Augusta State Invitational for the third consecutive year. Two years ago, State finished third in Augusta, a tournament that concludes on the Sunday before The Masters. It is one of the tournaments that the players get the most excited about as the players gift for the event has traditionally been a ticket to the Monday practice round at Augusta National. For the first time, the Panthers will host both the men and women s Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia in mid- April. Automatic bids will be on the line April 18th-20th, as the winners of each tournament will earn spots into the NCAA Regionals. In three years as a member of the CAA, the men s golf team has won two titles and finished second in their other appearance. State won last year s championship by 25 strokes. The Panthers will hope to continue after the CAA Championships and advance to postseason play, which will have a slight change this year. Rather than three regionals made up of 27 teams and six individuals a piece, six regionals of 13 or 14 teams each will comprise this year s postseason play. The top five teams at each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will still feature 30 teams as it has in the past. This year s NCAA Championship will take place at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Georgia State will be looking to make their fifth appearance and return after missing out in Prior to missing out last year, the Panthers had appeared in three of the last four national championships, finishing as high as 11th in Although there is a lot of new faces on campus, one thing will remain the same the goal of bringing Georgia State its first-ever national championship Georgia State Men s Golf Roster Name Ht. 20 A Conversation with Head Coach Joe Inman Before the season got underway, we had a chance to sit down with new Georgia State Head Coach Joe Inman to ask him some questions about the upcoming season. Coach Inman gave us an insider view from what he expects of himself and his team this year. This was moderated by current Assistant Sports Information Director Mike Holmes. Question: As a first year head coach, what was it that made you decide to take the job at Georgia State? Coach Inman: I have always wanted to coach, but it just has never been the right time. What made me decide to take the Georgia State job was that it was in downtown Atlanta and I didn t want to leave town. It had everything that I wanted, it was Division I, they have solid players and just have never gotten the recognition that they deserved. We had a student-athlete who finished 19th in the British Open this summer and if you went around and asked golfers in town, nobody knows it. Georgia State just doesn t create a ripple and I want it to create a ripple. Question: What have been some of the things that you have learned about the Panther Golf Program over the years and in your first few weeks on the job that have made you excited about the upcoming season? Coach Inman: One of the first things I noticed was how many good players have played here. I had no idea, just like when we talked about why did I take the job, I learned that there has just not been any real recognition for Georgia State. It is so sad to think when we have had players like Joel Sjoholm, D.J. Fiese, you go down the list of all of these players who are still playing professionally who have been All- Americans and nobody knows that. They know Georgia and they know Georgia Tech and that is what they know. It is time for them to know something about Georgia State Question: Entering the season, what do you feel will be the strongest aspect of the team? Coach Inman: My international players. I had two coming in this year, one from Sweden, a transfer from West Florida and a freshman from Germany. They are spectacular. That being said, they are still young and will they play like that, I don t know? I have played with them and they are really talented. Tobias Rosendahl is going to be an All-American. I don t know what team, but he can play and he wants to play. Allen John is so strong, but we have to make sure that he is not gone too much playing for Germany. Between Tom, Tobias, Allen and my six boys from Georgia, if they step up like we are working on, we are going to be a good team. Question: Junior Tom Sherreard became the fourth Panther to participate in the British Open over the summer. How do you think that will help you when it comes to recruiting international players? Coach Inman: International players are your strongest link to other international players. They talk amongst themselves and not like they talk to adults. They give the kid the truth about the program. That is how Joel got Tobias to come here. That is how Maurice got Allen to come here. So, Tom, this year and next year, Tobias and Allen will all be great tools to allow us to continue to recruit athletes from overseas. I have also played with international players, the Irish players, Bernhard Langer in Germany, Sam Torrance, Mark James, Bernhard Gallagher, the South Africans, the Australians, though it is harder for the Australians since they have to come all the way across the world, but for Europeans and South Americans, it is time for me to reach out to them and if they know anyone who is playing well and wants to come to the United States, send them my way. They know me and they trust me. We simple have to have a pipeline to Europe for us to be good. We don t have to have an entire team of international players, but we need to have some solid players from there. We simply will not get the first picks of players from Georgia. We are getting better at having a more traditional college experience, but we are not there yet. We have to be able to take that first-tier or second-tier player and figure out which one of those is going to be a good fit for us. Our job is to be a talent evaluator, just like the others, just without as big a pool. Internationally, we will certainly have as big a pool. To a kid in Sweden, Georgia or Georgia Tech doesn t mean anything to them. You are in Atlanta and that means something to them. We are on even footing if not a little ahead on international players and that is why it will always be a part of my recruiting plan. Question: Having played golf professionally for many years, how can you relate your experiences (including a PGA Tour victory and three Champions Tour victories) to today s player and what it takes to be successful in the golfing industry. Coach Inman: I was talking to Cathy Mant (Georgia State Women s Golf Head Coach) and some of these guys just do not realize what it takes to be a great player. What I am trying to tell them is this, you are not a great player by accident. You are great for a purpose. You can be great for a week, you can be great for a month, you can even be great for a year. You can t be great for a career by accident. You need to know what you are trying to do. You may not always do it correctly, but you know what you are trying to accomplish. You always know what you are working on in your golf swing. You know what you are working on in your short game and in your putting and in your thinking. You are always trying to build. Some of these kids simply are talented and they see the ball and hit it in the hole. However, they don t understand how that happened. They just can do it sometimes. Well when they do it, they asked how that happened and what caused that. When it goes bad, they ask the same question. You have to at least, on purpose, know what you did right or what you did wrong so that you can stay consistent. If you look at their scores, up, down, up, down. Their scores are all over the board. The ones who are consistent are shooting 72, 69, 71, 68. Those are the players that know what they are trying to do and that is what I am trying to get these younger guys to understand. You have got to do it on purpose and you have got to have a plan and then execute the plan. Question: What insights has your brother (UNC Men s Golf Head Coach John Inman) given you as you begin this new endeavor? Coach Inman: All I can say is that I have literally called him (John) 30 times. Things like: John, do you wear the same things as your players, John, when do we get to a tournament for the practice round, they day of or the night before. John, do I join the coaches association or not, what package do I pick for GolfStat. I can go down a million things that I have asked him. John is the sweetest man. He would not know how to hurt somebody. That is just the way he is. He really tries to help everyone. We are just recruiting different kinds of people. He gets kids whose first choice is to go to Carolina or Georgia or USC. He has helped me so much in the beginning to get over this learning curve, by the time this first year is over he will still have some experiences that I don t, but a lot of the learning curve will be behind me. I can t say enough about how sweet he and Jerry Haas have been. Jerry has called and could not be more supportive. I have almost gotten everything done and am ready for the season to begin. Coach, thank you for your time and good luck during the upcoming season. 20

47 Georgia State Men s Golf Head Coach Joe Inman 125 Decatur Street Suite 201 Atlanta, GA Office: Friends of Panther Golf: The Panther Golf Club has been a major factor in our teams success over the years and as I take over the reigns of the program, I hope that I can continue to build it into one of the best booster clubs in the country. However, I cannot accomplish my goal of bring a national championship to Georgia State without your help. Over the last ten years, the Georgia State men s golf program has become one that is synonymous with success and excellence. From the first team to reach the NCAA Regionals in 1999 to last year s conference title, giving us six in the last ten years, we are going to continue to strive to bring in the best recruits that will allow us to reach our ultimate goals. I must give a lot of credit to Trey Jones and Matt Clark who came before me. They set the foundation and developed the framework for what I hope to continue to build. In my short time here, I have already started a list of the things that need to be done for us to reach the next level. Some of the basic things that we need to do are raise money for the essentials, like a full-time assistant coach and a team van. I would also like to see us be able to go overseas every four years so that our international players get a chance to play closer to home, but we will only be able to achieve these things with your help. We are already on a solid footing and have achieved amazing success for what we have been given, but there is still a lot of room for improvement. Personally, I think I know what it takes to help our golfers get to the next level, but without the resources, including things like a practice facility, it will truly be very difficult. We can be good, but it will be difficult to be great. With your help, I think we can truly become great. We are thankful that we lose only one senior after this year and the nucleus of student-athletes that we have returning are fantastic. With my recruiting contacts and if I can replace that senior, we can be exponentially better next year. As I start my first year here at Georgia State, I look forward to meeting each and everyone one of you that has supported the program in the past. I hope that you will continue to support what we are building here, making Panther golf the best in the country. If I can ever answer any of your questions, please do not hesitate to call me in my office or on my cell at Although a lot of people may say do not hesitate to contact me, I truly mean it. I want as much interaction and discussion with our fans and booster club as possible as that is how we will achieve our best results. Sincerely, Coach Joe Inman NCAA Championships: 2000, 2004, 2005, 2007 NCAA Regionals: 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 Conference Titles: 1998, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2008
