3 2014 ANNUAL REPORT (APR 14 MAR 15) Introduction FY 2014 saw new highs being established by our amateur golfers. We achieved our best ever performance at the World Amateur Team Championship (Eisenhower Trophy) with a 25 th team position. We also continued our winning streak with a 4 th consecutive win over MGA in our annual match. Our 2 nd place finish in the 54 th Putra Cup and our 7 th place team finish in the 17 th Asian Games were other notable achievements. This momentum continued into early FY2015 when Team Singapore achieved its best SEA Games performance with a podium finish in all four events winning the men s team and individual silver medals and women s team and individual bronze medals at the 28 th SEA Games. 3

4 53 rd ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The SGA 53 rd AGM was held on 29 Jul 14 at the SICC Bukit Location. The AGM elected Mr James Koh Cher Siang, Chairman SICC, as the Chairman of the SGA Governing Council for the ensuing year. The outgoing Chairman, Mr Lee Ek Tieng, stepped down after relinquishing his chairmanship of Raffles Country Club. Mr Bob Tan was re-appointed President for a third term of office whilst Mr Goh Hup Chor was reappointed Vice President. Mr Yee Woon Yim and Ms Loh Ju Fern were appointed Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer, respectively. 6 TEAM ACHIEVEMENTS IN REGIONAL TOURNAMENTS 29 th World Amateur Team Championship (Eisenhower Trophy) Japan hosted the World Amateur Team Championship from Sep 14. Team USA won for the 15 th time, successfully defending its 2012 title. Team Canada won the silver medal whilst Team Spain won the bronze medal. Team Singapore finished in a four way tie in 25 th position. This is Singapore s best ever performance in the Eisenhower Trophy tournament finishing as the 3 rd best Asian team behind Chinese Taipei and Korea. 7 SGA vs MGA Annual Match SGA narrowly beat MGA 12½ to 11½ points to make it our 4 th consecutive win in our annual match. 9 54 th SEA Amateur Golf Team Championship (Putra Cup) In the 54 th SEA Amateur Golf Team Championship (Putra Cup) hosted by Brunei at the Empire Hotel & Country Club from 11 to 17 Oct 14, we finished in 2 nd place behind winner Thailand. Malaysia finished in third position. Team Singapore receiving the 1 st runner up Putra Cup trophy from His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Malik. Our ladies did well, too, to finish in 3 rd position at the 6 th Santi Cup which was held concurrently with Putra Cup and two other junior tournaments, namely, the 8 th Lion City Cup and the 2 nd Kartini Cup. 11 17 th Asian Games The 17 th Asian Games golf tournament was hosted by Korea at the Dream Park Country Club from 25 to 28 Sep 14. Chinese Taipei won the gold medal followed by Korea winning the silver and Thailand the bronze. China and Japan were tied in 4 th position with India in 6 th position. 12 INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS IN REGIONAL TOURNAMENTS Our players continued to dominate Malaysian State tournaments. Abdul Hadi successfully defended the Negeri Sembilan Amateur Open and won three others, the Johor Amateur Open, the Penang Amateur Open and the Malacca Amateur Open. Lucius Toh won the Selangor Amateur Open, his first win in an international tournament, whilst Marc Ong finished second in the 112 th Malaysian Amateur Championship. Our ladies also made good progress with two players making their maiden victory. Koh Sock Hwee achieved a major breakthrough in her amateur career winning the SLGA Amateur Open. Goh Jen achieved her first international victory when she won the Hong Kong Ladies Open Amateur. 13 Jerome Ng achieved a top 10 finish ending in tied 8 th position at the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship, a by invitation only tournament with the winner being invited to the US Masters. 14 LOCAL AMATEUR TOURNAMENTS 3 rd Singapore National Senior Amateur Championship The 3 rd Singapore National Senior Amateur Championship was held at the Warren Golf & Country Club from May The winner was Douglas Ooi. Douglas Ooi receiving his trophy from Vice President SGA Goh Hup Chor. 14

15 Singapore Junior Golf Championship 2014 This tournament was hosted by Keppel Club from 4 6 Jun Thai Sangchai Keawcharoen and James Leow were declared joint winners after both finished tied and bad weather prevented a playoff. 16 67 th Singapore Open Amateur Championship The 67 th edition of our premier amateur tournament, the Singapore Open Amateur Championship, was hosted by the Singapore Island Country Club at the venerable Island Course from 14 to 18 Jul Thai Danthai Boonma won the tournament after a play-off with compatriot Natipong Srithong. 17 15 th Singapore National Amateur Championship The 15 th SNAC was played at the Sentosa Golf Club, Tanjong Course, from 12 to 15 August Johnson Poh was the men s champion, his second win having won the first time in Goh Jen was the women s champion. 18 SGA Inter Club League 2014 The SGA Inter Club League 2014 prize presentation dinner was held on 2 Oct 14 at the Keppel Club. The Guest of Honour was President SGA, Bob Tan, and guests included Governing Council members, Exec Board members, club captains and lady captains and participants of the SGA ICL. The Overall Champion was NSRCC which amassed a total of 33 points winning 11 out of the 12 legs. This is NSRCC s fourth straight win since the new match play format was introduced in The Overall Champion 1 st Runner Up was SICC and 2 nd Runner Up was TMCC. 23 SINGAPORE OPEN The Singapore Open was again not staged this year. However, on 28 Jan 15, we announced that the Singapore Open will return with Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) as the new title sponsor and co-sanctioned by Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO). 24 ASEAN GOLF FEDERATION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The AGF AGM was held on 15 Oct 2014 at the Empire Hotel & Country Club, Brunei. Delegates from Brunei, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand attended the AGM chaired by AGF Sec Gen Datuk Mohamed Zain Mohamed Yusuk together with President AGF Pengiran Dato Haji Mustapha. 25 ASIA PACIFIC GOLF CONFEDERATION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The APGC AGM was held at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club on 22 Oct 2014 with delegates from twenty countries attending. Singapore was represented by President SGA, Bob Tan. 26 R&A TEACH THE TEACHERS SEMINAR The R&A conducted a Teach the Teachers Seminar at the Mines Resort, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 29 Mar Delegates from Asean, Australia, Chinese Taipei, India, Japan, Korea and South Africa attended this seminar which was a follow up to the first one held in Thailand in SGA was represented by Dennis Tan, Chairman Rules Sub-Committee, Raymond Tan and Peter Teo, General Manager SGA. 27 SGA/PARENTS ANNUAL DIALOGUE The annual SGA/Parents Dialogue was held on 25 Apr 15 at the SICC auditorium. 30 2015 NATIONAL AND DEVELOPMENT SQUADS The SGA 2015 National Squad saw the inclusion of four new members to their ranks. They are James Leow, Sarah Tan, Jacqueline Young and Wong Yen Ting. 32 SGA COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE An SGA Community Engagement Committee, headed by SGA Exec Board member and Captain Jurong Country Club, Mr Ross Tan, was formed to study how SGA could engage the community to better promote and develop golf. The CEC actively worked with Ministry of Education to seek ways on how to place golf as a sport to be adopted under the Sports for Schools programme. It also worked with various SGA Ordinary Members on how to support this initiative. The initiatives being developed are planned to come on line in FY2016. SGA CENTRALISED HANDICAPPING SYSTEM The SGA Centralised Handicapping System project to streamline our current handicap process was started this year. This new system will track all golfers who play on any of the golf courses in Singapore. Scores can be posted either by the clubs or individually by golfers through club terminals or via the internet. At the end of each month, the system will compute the data centrally and distribute the relevant handicap scoring data to all SGA Members Handicap Committees to enable them to carry out their Handicap Committee s responsibilities. The system will come on line in FY2016. SUBSIDIES FOR SGA ORDINARY MEMBERS JUNIOR GOLF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME As part of SGA s effort to encourage the development of junior golf programmes, subsidies ranging from S$4,000 to S$8,000 were disbursed to our Ordinary Members in FY2014. Higher subsidies were given to those with programmes that are open to non-members to serve as incentives for our Ordinary Members to make their facilities available to non-members. COMPLIMENTARY FLIGHTS FOR SGA ORDINARY MEMBERS HOSTING SGA events The practice of offering complimentary flights to SGA Ordinary Members hosting SGA tournaments was established in This privilege allows those who host our tournaments to receive two flights per day from other Ordinary Members for the duration of the event. This practice continued in FY2014 and helped lightened the task of our Members hosting SGA events. 32

33 28 TH SOUTH EAST ASIA GAMES Preparation for the 28 th SEA Games golf tournament went full swing during the last quarter of FY The Golf Organising Committee was formed with Vice President SGA, Goh Hup Chor, as Chairman and SGC General Manager, Andy Johnston, the Tournament Director. The SGA Training & Selection Sub-Committee shortlisted 11 players (7 men and 4 women) for further training and assessment with the final team selection of 4 men and 3 women players made at the end of March. They were Johnson Poh, Jonathan Woo, Marc Ong, Abdul Hadi, Koh Sock Hwee, Goh Jen and Amanda Tan. Dr Tan Eng Liang, Chairman of the Special Training Assistance Committee (STAC), 28 th SEA Games Chef de Mission Nicholas Fang and STAC members visited our golfers carrying out centralised training at the SICC Millennium Course on 10 Mar 15. 34 As part of the training programme, renowned golf psychologist Sean Lynch conducted two psychology sessions with our SEA Games players. The first was carried out in Australia and the second was done on 5 May 15 at Sentosa Golf Club. Sean Lynch going through putting drills with the players. Players also had dinner with SGA President, Vice President and Hon Treasurer together with Sean Lynch and coach Luke Cantelo. 34

35 The 28 th SEA Games golf tournament was held at Sentosa Golf Club Serapong Course from 7 12 Jun 15. Thailand won all four gold medals winning the men s and women s team and individual events. Singapore achieved our best SEA Games performance with a podium finish in all four events winning the men s team and individual silver and women s team and individual bronze. 37 FINANCIAL MATTERS Sponsorship The SGA Inter Club League continued to enjoy the sponsorship of Asia Pacific Breweries at all the 13 SGA ICL legs as well as at the prize presentation dinner. However, Daimler SEA Pte Ltd decided to cease sponsorship of this event. Backdrop at the SGA ICC prize presentation dinner HSBC continued with its strong support for junior golf development by sponsoring the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge series for 2014 making this their 7 th year of sponsorship. 37

38 TaylorMade-adidas Golf continued its support for SGA as the official apparel sponsor for FY 2014 as well as for the 28 th SEA Games. 39 SGA CONFLICT OF INTERESTS POLICY SGA policy relating to the management and avoidance of conflicts of interest is as follows: a. Each SGA Executive Board Member and staff shall declare in writing the nature and extent of any relationship, arrangement, contract or agreement, which may result in a conflict of interest. b. When there is a change to a Board member or staff interests, the board member or staff shall provide an update to the secretariat as soon as is practicable. c. The disclosure of interests shall be tabled at the next practical Executive Board meeting, unless circumstances require, in which case, they shall be communicated as soon as possible to the other Board members and to staff. d. Where a Board member or staff is in a position of conflict of interest, the Board member should declare himself (or herself) as conflicted and offer not to participate in the discussion. Persons in a conflict of interest shall abstain from any decisions made on the matter. All disclosures and the nature of the discussions and decisions shall be appropriately minuted in the notes of the meeting. e. Where a Board member expects to find himself (or herself) in a significant conflict of interest position, he should seek, in the first instance, to minimize his (or her) participation in the process that could lead to the conflict of interest. f. The Board will seek to avoid perceptions of any conflicts of interest in its financial dealings. The World Amateur Team Championship is a biennial international amateur competition conducted by the International Golf Federation (IGF). The competition, which was held for the 26th time was hosted by the Japan Golf Association. 17. The Men s teams play for the Eisenhower Trophy whilst the Women s teams play for the Espirito Santo Trophy. The Espirito Santo Trophy was played from 3 6 Sep 14 whilst the Eisenhower Trophy was played from Sep In the Women s WATC, Australia took the Espirito Santo Trophy with a score of 29 under 547. Canada took the silver medal with 27 under 549 followed by Korea with 26 under 550. Denmark finished fourth at 556, followed by Sweden and the USA tied for fifth at 557, Mexico in seventh at 560, England and host Japan tied for eighth at 562 and the Philippines in 10th at Brooke Henderson topped the individual ranking at 19 under 269 (66, 69, 66, 68) followed by Minjee Lee at 16-under 272 (73, 70, 64, 65) and Alison Lee at 14-under 274 (68, 70, 68, 68). 20. Team Singapore was represented by Koh Sock Hwee, Kok Jo Ee and Amanda Tan. They finished in tied 36 th position at 25-over 601. In the Men s World Amateur Team Championship, Team USA won for the 15 th time, successfully defending its 2012 title in Turkey, with a record score of 38 under 534. Canada won the silver medal, two strokes behind the USA at 536 and Spain won the bronze medal at Team Singapore, represented by Jonathan Woo, Johnson Poh and Marc Ong finished in a four way tie in 25 th position with 14 under 558. This is Team Singapore s best ever performance in the Eisenhower Trophy tournament making it the 3 rd best Asian team behind Chinese Taipei (23 under 549) and Korea (21 under 551). 44

Chinese Taipei won the gold medal with 45-under 819. Korea took the silver with 38-under 826 and Thailand the bronze with 31-under 833. 47 42nd Selangor Amateur Open 41. Lucius Toh won his first international tournament at the 42nd Selangor Amateur Open with a 1-over 217 (75, 72, 70). Trailing Malaysian Amir Nazrin by 6 shots going into Round 3, he shot a creditable 2-under 70 to win by 1 shot. Amir Nazrin had to settle for second after a 5-over 77 gave him a 2-over 218 (71, 70, 77) final score. Malaysian Galven Green finished in third with 5-over 221 (70, 76, 75). 42. Lucius Toh s win ensured that the trophy remains in Singapore s hand after Jerome Ng won it in The defending champion finished in 8th position. 43. The Ladies Division was won by Malaysian Diane Luke with 12-over 228 (73, 74, 81). The 54 th South East Asia Amateur Golf Team Championship (Putra Cup) was hosted by Brunei at the Empire Hotel & Country Club from Oct 14. There were four tournaments running concurrently, namely, the 54 th Putra Cup, 8th Lion City Cup, 6th Santi Cup and the 2nd Kartini Cup. A total of seven countries participated in these tournaments. 47. Team Thailand won the 54 th Putra Cup with a total score of 821. Team Singapore did well to finish in second position with 844. Team Malaysia finished in third position with Team Thailand also won the Lion City Cup and the Kartini Cup. Team Philippines was the only team that prevented Team Thailand from making a clean sweep by taking the Santi Cup. 49. In the Putra Cup Individual event, Thai players Danthai Boonma at 15-under 269 (66, 61, 70, 72), Natipong Srithong at 11-under 273 (69, 71, 67, 66) and Kasidit Lepkurte at 5-under 279 (72, 69, 68, 70) took the top three positions. The 2014 Asia Pacific Amateur Championship was held at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club, Australia, from Oct 14. The six invited Singapore players, Jerome Ng, Jonathan Woo, Johnson Poh, Marc Ong, Gregory Foo and Wong Qi Wen were accompanied by National Coach Luke Cantelo. SGA vs MGA Annual Match SGA narrowly beat MGA by 12½ to 11½ points in the SGA vs MGA Annual Match that was hosted by MGA at the Glenmarie Golf & Country Club from 11 to 12 Nov This is the 4th consecutive win by SGA in the annual match that was started in SGA took the early lead in the morning Four Ball matches winning 4 points to MGA s 2 points. However, MGA drew level when it took 4 points from the afternoon Foursomes to SGA s 2 points. Both teams then started the Singles matches the next day equally matched with 6 points. Koh Sock Hwee achieved a major breakthrough in her amateur career winning the 2014 SLGA Amateur Open held at the Orchid Country Club. 54 62. The 2014 SLGA Amateur Open was held at the Par 73 Vanda/Dendro Course from 2 4 Jul th Singapore Open Amateur Championship 63. The 67 th edition of our premier amateur tournament, the Singapore Open Amateur Championship, was hosted by the Singapore Island Country Club from 14 to 18 Jul This tournament was again held at the venerable Island Course. The 5,945 metre course was made more challenging when it was reduced to a Par 70 course with both the par 5 Holes, 4 th and 11 th, converted to par A total of 79 entries comprising 28 top local amateur golfers and 51 foreign players were received. The list of foreign players included top amateurs from Australia, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand and Chinese Taipei. 65. There was, for the very first time, an offer of a Hole-in-One prize of a golf watch from the Time to Play Series sponsored by Jaermann & Stubi The Timepiece of Golf. 66. Top Thai amateur Danthai Boonma (70, 64, 67, 66) won the tournament after a play-off with compatriot Natipong Srithong (67, 66, 69, 65) on the second play-off hole after both shot 13-under Gregory Foo took the 2nd Runner-Up position with 6-under 274 (72, 67, 66, 69) followed by Jerome Ng in fourth spot with 4-under 276 (72, 68, 68, 68). 68. President SGA Bob Tan was present to give away the winner s trophy to the champion whilst Tournament Director Dennis Thomas presented trophies to the runners up. 7th Warren Ford Amateur Open 69. Joshua Ho won the 7 th Warren Ford Amateur Open, held from 8 10 Jul 14, with even par 213 (71, 68, 74). Marc Ong finished in second with 1-over 214 (71, 73, 70) followed by Johnson Poh with 2-over 215 (72, 69, 74). 70. Fariza Izanie Zain took the Ladies title with 13-over 226 (75, 76, 75). Koh Sock Hwee was two shots behind in second position at 15 over 228 (78, 77, 73) and Munchin Ken third with 18-over 231 (80, 78, 73) th Singapore National Amateur Championship 71. The 15 th SNAC was played at the Sentosa Golf Club, Tanjong Course, from 12 to 15 August A total of 62 participants, 46 men and 16 women were accepted for the tournament. Open to only Singapore citizens and permanent residents, competitors played two rounds of 18 holes stroke play before the top 16 men and top 8 women proceeded to the match play segments.

55 72. Johnson Poh beat James Leow 8 and 7 to emerge the men s champion of the 15 th Singapore National Amateur Championship. This was his second win having won the first time in Goh Jen was the women s champion after beating Jacqueline Young 6 and 5. The men s 2 nd runner up was Joshua Shou who beat Nicholas Mok 5 and 4 whilst Koh Sock Hwee took the women s 2nd runner up position beating Wong Yen Ting 4 and The prize presentation was attended by President SGA Bob Tan, who gave away the winners trophies, and members of the SGA Executive Board. SGA Inter Club League The SGA Inter Club League 2014 completed its last leg on 28 Sep 14 and the prize presentation dinner was held on 2 Oct 14 at the Keppel Club. 75. The Overall Champion was NSRCC which amassed a total of 33 points winning 11 out of the 12 legs to emerge as champion. This is NSRCC s fourth straight win since the new match play format was introduced in The Overall Champion 1 st Runner Up was SICC with 30 points and 2 nd Runner Up was TMCC with 27 points. 77. Jaermann & Stubi sponsored a Hole-in- One prize of a golf watch from the Time to Play Series. 81. The winner was David Foo who shot 14-over 230 (78, 76, 76) to win by a comfortable margin. He drew level with second round leader Ng Cheng Hoe at the turn and raced ahead to finish 5 shots ahead of the field. It was sweet victory for Foo who was runner up last year. 82. Ralph Aeria (83, 73, 79) took the runner up position on count back followed by Yan Heng Chok (76, 79, 80) and Ng Cheng Hoe (73, 80, 82) who all finished on 19-over Honorary Secretary SGA, Yee Woon Yim, and Exec Board member, CS Kong, attended the prize presentation lunch and later presented trophies to the winners Faldo Series Singapore Championship 84. The 2014 Faldo Series Singapore Championship was hosted by Jurong Country Club from Nov Lucius Toh carded a total of 7-over 223 (78, 72, 73) to win the tournament by 2 shots. This was his second win in this tournament, having won it last year in Jacqueline Young finished in overall second position and took the Girls Division title with 9-over 225 (76, 74, 75). Second round leader, Tommy Tan, stumbled at the 10th hole with a quadruple bogey to finish third and winning the Boys Division title with 10-over 226 (76, 71, 79). 87. All three winners will get to participate in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final to be held in Mission Hills from 9 13 Mar Hon Secretary SGA, Yee Woon Yim, presented trophies to the winners. The silver and bronze medals were contested by three players who all finished on 4-over 220, in a playoff. Indonesian Rivani Sihotang (70, 77, 73) took the silver medal at the fourth playoff hole whilst Koh Sock Hwee (69, 74, 77) took the bronze medal.
