4 METRO SENIOR S PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Welcome to Metro St Louis Senior s Golf Association and the 2018 season! We have made some changes that will make the 2018 season more fun. Some of the off-season changes are: 1. Continued improvements to the two websites golfstlseniors.org and ourgolfstats.com 2. A great slate of Special Events at Whitmoor, Annbriar, Gateway National, Missouri Bluffs, Sunset Hills (IL) and Indian Mounds in addition to the 25 weeks of regular weekly play. 3. Addition of Annbriar, Union Hills, Wolf Hollow, Woods Fort 4. Revision of The Policy and Procedures Manual. 5. The ability to pay the regular dues and Special Events via credit card as a convenience. The Pace of Play (POP) efforts in 2017 were very successful. We measured pace for 2500 tee groups. We can analyze data by course, Division, player handicap, and more. Our average pace over more than 10,000 rounds was less than 4 ½ hours. Many of our groups played at 4 hour pace. There is still room for improvement, about 5% of members still slow down about 25% of members. Our slowest players improved after seeing their data. Plus, new members must be integrated in our Ready Golf efforts. One major change for improved pace we eliminated Reverse Shotgun starts. This alone could improve our overall averages by 5 to 10 minutes and virtually eliminate 5 hour rounds. Our goal remains is 4 ½ hours with no more than 15 minutes between completing groups for ALL groups. We will monitor everyone and encourage slow groups to improve. We will once again offer discount cards for the ease of carrying and the ease of use. More golf for good prices and good clubs. We will also be getting your opinions on many topics via surveys, so please take the time to complete them to make your voice heard. Unlike other elections, popular votes do win here. This is the 46 th year of Metro Seniors! It succeeds because of VOLUNTEERS, new ideas and our love of golf. Join a committee. Consider volunteering for the Board of Governors. Get involved, you can make Metro Seniors better Your Board of Governors makes good things happen. Help us identify problems AND improvements. Good luck with your golf in We hope that Metro Seniors Fellowship and Fun will be a big part of your year.. Dave Wicks President Page 2

5 Welcome New Members! You have joined a great institution that has been focused on Fun and Fellowship Through Golf for almost 50 years and we hope many more. We are all volunteers and put significant effort and money to support our values. We are a growing, evolving organization that looks that embraces opportunities to improve while honoring the tradition of golf. Metro St. Louis Seniors Golf Association (MSLSGA) is organized for: 1. Promoting fellowship and fun by organizing competitive golf tournaments 2. Providing fair rules for fair and speedy play for members with a wide range of skills 3. Members who are expected to a) Follow rules for honest, courteous, fair play (rules are posted on line and in Member Directory) b) Be competitive and play their best c) Play in a timely manner (4 ½ hr target for split tee starts) Ready Golf Tips to make the most of your membership 1. Come to the General Membership Meeting (1:00 PM, Tuesday, Mar 13, 2018). Meet your Division VP, the Officers and Board members, other members and other new members. Sign up for your Starter / Scorer duties. Find a friend or a partner for the first few outings. Pick up your Member Directory and Division Roster and read them. Put it with your golf bag for reference. Find out about the other resources and use them. 2. Use our Resources. Our website (golfstlseniors.org) and our handicap service website (ourgolfstats.com), have LOTS of information for you. Tournament rules, schedules, tournament results, handicaps, flights, course information, weekly news, references, resources, and links to data. 3. Follow our Rules! MSLSGA has modified a few USGA Rules for better pace of play and to better match senior skills. Read and follow our rules they will help your game and our pace of play. We do play for money, but the amounts are not worth any form of cheating. Fair play builds friendships. 4. Reach out to others! You are NOT the only new member. About 10 to 20 new members join each division every year. Several of our long term members welcome the opportunity to play with new members and may need a regular fourth. If you joined with a friend or to play with friends already in the league, great! If you are a single, a twosome or a threesome, look in the directory for other members you may know. Consider organizing your friends for car pools. 3. Show Up at the Course and play frequently with your friends, or as a single. During the first part of registration we give tee starts to foursomes as a priority. There are usually a twosome or a threesome looking to fill a foursome. Ask people in the parking lot or at the Starters Table to form a group. This is a great way to meet new people and make new friends. 4. Play fairly, quickly and encourage others. Honest, accurate scoring and a speedy Pace of Play are highly valued. Playing by our rules, and playing Ready Golf while Keeping Up with the group immediately ahead allows most members play their rounds at course targets of 4 to 4 ½ hours. 5. Get involved, volunteer as a Starter/Scorer, join a committee, help on a tournament. As a volunteer organization, we can always use more talent to move the organization along in committees, special events, and on the Board of Governors. If you have skills with technology (spreadsheets, databases, websites) or want to learn, you can help us move improve. 6. Play More! Consider joining a Thursday AND a Friday Division and even Division 9 (Wednesday) 7. Have FUN while playing - No one likes to play with a grouch! Page 3

7 Changes Summary 2018 For Details See 2018 Rules, 2018 Regulations, Website OPERATION CHANGES Start Types For only Split Tee and regular Shotgun starts. Fun and very quick to play good for us and our courses. Reverse Shotguns (with consecutive A/B Groups) were eliminated by negotiation with several courses. Reverse Shotguns took 30 to 45 minutes longer than average pace. Split Tee Start Registration Reduced to 1 Hour After Start Time Registration time will be reduced to 1 hour after the first tee time. The goal - everyone on the course earlier including the Starters. Earlier finishes so Scorers can finish earlier, too. Registration times will be: Start Type Start Time/First Tee Registration Start Registration Ends Split Tee (6:30 Start) 6:30 AM 5:45 AM 7:30 AM Split Tee (7:00 Start) 7:00 AM 6:15 AM 8:00 AM Members arriving AFTER registration ends may not register and will not be included in the tournament for flight prizes, CTP, or handicaps. Arrive on time to register. Start promptly (about 8 minutes behind the group ahead). Scorecards We will be looking for ways to improve the scoring process from filling out the Universal Scorecards through getting the data to OurGolfStats. Several ideas are being discussed and may be tested or piloted during Our goal - reduce members' time, minimizing errors and omission from score writing to data entry, and the delays to get final reports. RULE CHANGES CONTINUING RULES FOR 2018 Nine (9) Stroke Maximum rule is continuing. This seemed to help with pace. Putting Out Required if Under 8 Strokes for a Hole Men Flights A, B, C, D Play From Either Forward or Regular Tees Flagstick may remain in hole while putting. No penalty if flagstick is hit during a putt. PACE OF PLAY IS A CONTINUING FOCUS AREA FOR 2018 Continuing effort in 2018 will include: Expectations Shotgun AND Tee Starts Target 4 ½ hr average or better. Slow Play Enforcement as needed OTHER CHANGES Starter/Scorer Instructions We will continue to simplify Starter / Scorer Instructions. Starters / Scorers will focus more on facilitating the process of registration and scoring and less on checking math and data. Discount Cards for 2018 Our Discount Card is contracted with over 30 courses and golf stores. You get one unique card at the March Meeting or from your Division VP. No replacements! Use it! Don't lose it! Season Long 60 is Nifty - Discontinued Participation was dropping. Mid-season standings were confusing. Volunteer efforts to manage were significant. Ideas for a replacement program? Bring them to the Special Events Committee or your Division Board member. Special Events Payouts Revised Payout Guideline for Special Events Prizes will target 1/3 of participants to receive a cash prize of at least $5. Special Events Handicaps Standardized Participants' individual handicaps will be based on the official Handicap Guide just before each event. For Team Handicaps, we will use a USGA recommended method. Better Courses for Special Events More Special in the Special Higher quality, more exclusive courses to be scheduled for Special Events. We expect registration to fill fast so be sure to register as early as possible. Revised Page 5

8 Pace of Play Guidelines A good pace of play is an important element in having a pleasant and enjoyable experience on the golf course, and it can actually improve your score. Remember the slowest group dictates the pace of play for everyone behind them. Any group that gets out of position, especially early in the round, will affect many groups after it. All groups are expected to meet the Association Pace of Play standard of 4 hours 30 minutes. After each tournament, the members will record their start time, finish time and total time on the Universal Score Card (or Electronic Score Card). Groups will also complete the Pace of Play Log. If the finish time of a group is more than15 minutes slower than the time of the preceding group and more than the prescribed 4 hours 30 minutes pace of play, the Division VP may issue warnings and request actions to improve pace. The Executive Committee may assess penalties including suspension or termination of Members prone to chronic slow play 3 or more warnings issued. Guidelines to help everyone meet the Pace of Play standard are as follows: Keep Up With The Group In Front: It is the group's responsibility to keep up with the group in front of you. Your correct position on the course is immediately behind the group in front of you, not immediately in front of the group behind you. Help others in your group maintain a proper pace. If your group is behind, try to catch up quickly. Invite faster groups to play through. Ready Golf: 2. Be prepared to tee off as soon as the group ahead is clear. 3. Hit when ready and safe; DO NOT use the honor system. 4. Keep your pre-shot routine short. 5. Always carry an extra ball. 6. Limit search for lost balls to 3 minutes. 7. On the green, assess your line and repair ball-marks while others are playing. 8. Putt continuously: If you are not in someone's line, go ahead and hole out. Think Ahead: Have everyone in your group watch where each shot goes. Take appropriate clubs to your ball and hit without delay. After a shot, get in the cart with your club and move on. Put the club in the bag at the next shot location. Move off the green as soon as all players have holed out. Speed up your exit by leaving your clubs on the side of the putting green closest to the next tee; then get in the cart with your clubs and mark scorecards at or on the way to the next tee. Don't let technology (GPS, smart phones, etc. slow you down. Riding in a Cart: Drop your partner off at his ball, then ride ahead to your ball or get out and walk to your ball with a few clubs If cart path only, anticipate your shot by carrying several clubs with you. Unusual circumstances occurring on the course that affect pace of play must be noted on the universal scorecard or Log Sheet, e.g., cart breaks down, time gap between starting tee times, rain delay, and serious illness. 10 Flights, Handicaps The Metro Seniors Handicap and flighting process strives to make all our Regular and Special Events Tournaments competitive, fair and enjoyable. It allows players of differing abilities to compete on an equitable basis within and across Flights. Four (4) competition flights and multiple position prizes give more opportunity to win cash. Weekly calculation of player handicaps by course and tee position and weekly flight adjustment maintain fairness throughout the season and in Special Event Tournaments. For Metro Seniors handicaps and flights to work fairly, every player must: Try to make their best score on every hole in every weekly tournament round Follow all Tournament Rules for Tees Played, ball placement, strokes, and penalties Accurately record and report all hole scores, and tees used at every regular weekly tournament round played Handicap Guide (HG) Calculation The Base of Player Course Handicaps for each Tee The OurGolfStats.com Handicap Guide calculation is similar and comparable to but does not copy the copyrighted USGA Handicap Index System.
