Ocean City High School Principal s Report June, 2014 CONGRATULATIONS! Congratulations to the members of the Class of 2014! Graduation was held on the football field under sunny skies. Graduation speakers were Carolyn Previti Salutatorian, and Maham Ahmad Valedictorian. Members from the Class of 1964 were honored. CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES AND VISITORS On Wednesday 5/28, Mr. Ritti and Mrs. Kelly s Probability and Statistic class travelled south on the boardwalk to Congo Falls miniature golf course. It was not exactly a sunny and warm day, but we had fun learning. Each student was assigned a golf hole from The Lost City course. The students photographed, measured, and detailed all obstacles. Once complete, the classes played 54 holes of golf. The students found one-variable statistics for each hole based on all the compiled scores, using Microsoft Excel and produced visual representations of the data. In addition to the 18 holes, Brandon Bishop produced an experimental probability analysis of the 19 th Plinko style game to determine how many free games the course can expect to distribute in a day. The students produced a laminated booklet diagramming each hole and rating the holes based upon the statistics gathered that day. Each specific golf hole has its own page with pictorial, written, and numerical details. Once
complete, we presented Congo Falls executives, Mark Benevento, John Ward, and Rich Hollander our results outside of the High School while the local papers documented the event. The book will be located at their front booth. If you re there this summer, check it out!! As an added bonus, we ran into the 6ABC weather crew walking back to school. Mrs. Kelly was quite excited to see Adam Joseph. Hole 17 Jon Vineyard Hole 17 is a straight shot with a rock on the left coming out a bit and a pile of rocks on the right. Mean Median 2 Mode 2 Std. 4 Mr. Bristol and Mrs. Daniel s honors world history classes and the Mrs. Brennan s Spanish 5 classes were involved in a co-curricular project. The language students were prepared to play the role of an agent at the stations through which an immigrant may have passed when arriving at a Spanish version of Ellis Island. The Social Studies classes are asked to come into school in character. They choose the day before to be parents or children and make passports for their family. Some students have a little Spanish but most have no idea what is being said to them. It is a wonderful role play for them as they are not used to being so helpless. Some adapt quickly and try to communicate while others remain bemused as they are instructed on their entry into the country. The purpose is two-fold: the American students can find out what it must have felt like to enter a country and speak little or none of the language, and the language students can have an opportunity to use the language that they have learned. All students can see the value of being able to communicate in another language and perhaps gain some understanding of what it is like to be new to a situation.
Club Activities The National Honor Society students have been very busy all year volunteering their time toward different community service events. They helped plan and volunteered in the following events or with the following organizations: ICC Beach-Clean up, Challenger Soccer and Baseball, MS Bike Tour, OC Half Marathon, Hero Walk, Scholarship Dinner, many boy and girl scout service projects, the Clothing Drive, MLK Clean-up, NJ Clean Communities Event, the Prom Dress Event in CMCH, Beacon Animal Rescue, OC Block Party, countless church events, and many more. In total, NHS members donated about 1,750 hours of their time! Senior Awards and Scholarship Night The Senior awards program and Senior Scholarship nights were held on May 30 th and June 2 nd. The seniors receiving awards and their parents were invited to these special events. The Senior Awards program was held in the auditorium the morning of May 30 th. Awards totaling over $21,580 were given to students for club participation and academic achievement.
Senior Scholarship Night was held the evening of June 3 rd. Over $380,686 was given in awards and scholarship money to students. Representatives from community organizations were on hand to present the award to the student. Pictures were taken of each award presented and sent to the representatives. ASL Show Stand for the Silent has traveled to 864 schools and spoken to 833,000 students worldwide about the life and death consequences of bullying. What can we do? What should we say? How do we stop it? Find out tonight. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity! The Smalley s met privately with President Obama and First Lady Michelle before their anti-bullying kick-off, Lady Gaga for her Born This Way campaign and Oprah Winfrey! In 2010, the Smalley s lost their son Ty when he took his own life as a result of relentless bullying. Since that time they have pledged to fight bullying in our schools and say they will never stop because their son, Ty will be 11 years old forever. They want to prevent this from happening to one more child. Kirk Smalley from Stand for the Silent: ASL TAKES A STAND was presented Thursday and Friday night, June 5 th & 6 th. This is a show about courage, embracing our differences, taking a stand against despair and committing to making our world a better place where we are mindful of one another. Students have chosen to Take A Stand against bullying in our schools and in our world. They honor a young victim, Ty Smalley, who at 11 years-old felt such despair from being bullied that he took his own life. And his sadness was not, and sadly is not unique. (55,000 children have taken their lives in the last 7 years as a result of bullying) The ASL
students have chosen to get up and sign for the victims who cannot yet stand up for themselves. They sign tonight for Deaf children in mainstream schools who are targeted because they are different. They sign tonight for thei r friends and some of them... sign for themselves.
