CALIFORN GOLDEN BEARS MEN S GOLF ANNUAL REPORT

CAL GOLF S STATE-OF-THE-ART SHORT-GAME FACILITY In a huge boost for the California men s and women s golf programs, the Golden Bears opened their short-game facility at the Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland in the fall of The Cal athletic department would like to thank everyone who combined to contribute approximately $600,000 to bring the project to fruition. The lead donors were Ed and Mollie Arnold, Ellen and Joffa Dale, Jay debenedetti, Lon and Becci Haskew, Judy Isaac, and Pat and Kent Newmark. The programs broke ground on the privately-funded project in 2006 after a long planning process. The two-and-a-half acre state-of-the-art short-game facility is conveniently located on the southwest corner of the Metropolitan Golf Links near the Oakland International Airport, approximately 15 minutes from campus. Built to United States Golf Association specifications, the facility features two extremely large greens one for putting and chipping, and the other for the aerial game, including pitching and bunker play. This was a dream of mine and Cal men s golf for 27 years and for the women s program since its inception in The facility helps improve our players from 120 yards and in. Both teams can always be more efficient in that area. It also helps in terms of recruiting because it makes us more competitive with the best programs in the country. For the first time, we have also been able to reach out to the community and host golf camps and clinics. Men s Head Coach Steve Desimone

COACHING STAFF STEVE DESIMONE Head Coach 37th Season Cal, 1970 Head coach Steve Desimone is in his 37th season at the helm of the Cal men s golf team in and has led the Golden Bears program to sustained success for nearly four decades including its lone national title in Although Cal reached the pinnacle of college golf with its 2004 national title, the five-year run Desimone s team put together from the through seasons with five consecutive appearances in the NCAA Championships including national semifinal showings in 2012 and 2013 is considered the golden era of the program and one of the best in the history of college golf. Desimone was named the National Coach of the Year for both the and campaigns. A new era of Cal golf that started in continued in the fall of 2015 when the Bears recorded a pair of victories at the Inverness Intercollegiate and Alister MacKenzie Invitational among top-three finishes in all five events including an impressive thirdplace showing at the prestigious Tavistock Collegiate Invitational annually featuring one of college golf's top fields. Freshman Collin Morikawa led the team with a stroke average in his collegiate action, while KK Limbhasut was second at and the team's top nationally-ranked golfer at No. 35 according to Golfweek/Sagarin. The squad that started the new era featured five freshmen among the nine players that saw action during a campaign in which the Bears established a new school record with their ninth straight NCAA Regional appearance. Cal came up just short of a sixth straight trip to the NCAA Championships when the Bears finished seventh one shot out of a playoff for the fifth and final qualifying spot at the NCAA Lubbock Regional. Cal did win four times (Windon Memorial, Alister MacKenzie Invitational, John A. Burns Inter- collegiate, National Invitational Tournament) for the fourth-highest win total in school history and extended its school-record string of three or more victories in a season to six. Cal also spent most of the campaign ranked in the top 25, finishing No. 24 (Golfstat) and No. 26 (Bushnell Golfweek, Golfweek/Sagarin) in the national polls despite a roster with no seniors. Honorable mention Golfweek All-American Shotaro Ban (John A. Burns Intercollegiate) and Limbhasut (Aggie Invitational) led the way in and were two of the team s three individual medalists along with Cameron Shaw (Itani Quality Homes Collegiate co-individual medalist). Limbhasut had the hot hand down the stretch, finishing tied for fourth at the NCAA Lubbock Regional and tied for sixth at the Pac-12 Championships to equal the best showing ever by a Cal freshman at both events and also become only the third player in school history to finish in the top 10 at both. He finished his first campaign at Cal with five top-five showings, six in the top 10 and eight in the top 15 to lead the Bears in all three categories. The honorable mention All-Pac-12, Pac-12 All-Freshman team and Cal Newcomer of the Year selection also led the Bears with a stroke average and was the only Cal player to participate in each of the team s 13 events and 40 rounds. Ban had a strong second half, adding a second-place showing at the Western Intercollegiate that was the best ever by a Cal player at the event and a tied for thirdplace finish at the Arizona Intercollegiate to his victory. He was a second-team All-Pac-12 KK Limbhasut and Steve Desimone take a look at Limbhasut's next shot. CALIFORN GOLDEN BEARS selection and also the team s Most Valuable Player and winner of the Ben Furth Award for academic and athletic excellence. Sebastian Crampton (honorable mention Pac-12 All- Freshman), Alex Helgans (Ed Arnold Coaches Award) and Alexander Wilson (Most Improved Player) also received honors during the season. Ban (No. 43 Golfstat, No. 49 Golfweek/ Sagarin) finished the campaign ranked in the nation s top 50 as the team's top nationallyranked player, while Limbhasut (No. 78 Golfstat, No. 94 Golfweek/Sagarin) was in the top 100. The combined accomplishments of the last three teams of the golden era that ended with the season were unprecedented not only at Cal but on a national level. The Bears won 24 of 40 strokeplay events during the period and were in the top five on 38 of those occasions as well as in each of their four match-play tournaments. The final three seasons of the era also included the two NCAA semifinals appearances, a single-season NCAA record 12 stroke-play victories in , and both the first two NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles in school history in 2012 and The Bears put together the best season in the history of college golf in when they were the nation's top-ranked team at the end of the campaign despite a second straight defeat in the NCAA Championships semifinals. Five Cal players from the golden era Brandon Hagy, Max Homa, Michael Kim, Joël Stalter and Michael Weaver were first-team All-Americans at least once in their careers with all five being recognized as either first or Men's Golf Annual Report 3

Steve Desimone speaks at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational Awards ceremony. second-teamers in to make Cal the first team in the history of college golf to have five first or second-team All-Americans in the same season. There were plenty of other firsts for Cal during the era including Kim s selection as both the unanimous National and Pac-12 Player of the Year in as well as Homa s NCAA individual title the same campaign. Hagy, Homa and Weaver also became the first three players in the history of the program to each play in the NCAA Championships four times. The golden era may have come to an end following the campaign when four of the team s five players at the NCAA Championships were seniors but not before the Bears extended their school-record string of appearances at the national finals to five seasons in a row, something only six teams accomplished during the five-year period. Despite Kim turning professional after the fall schedule, Cal tied for the second most wins in school history with six in , with each coming over its first nine events. The Bears won three of five tournaments during the fall (Saint Mary s Invitational, Jack Nicklaus Invitational, Alister MacKenzie Invitational) and moved up to as high as tied for No. 2 nationally according to Golf World/ Nike Golf after winning three of its first four events in the spring (Arizona Intercollegiate, John A. Burns Intercollegiate, National Invitational Tournament). The Bears would not win another event in but did head into the NCAA Championships as the No. 5 seed before finishing tied for 11th. Hagy raked in the honors in with the long list including All-Nicklaus Team, first-team Golfweek All-American, first-team Division I PING All-American, Byron Nelson Award, first-team Capital One Academic All- America Division I Men s At-Large, firstteam Division I PING All-West Region, Pac- 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Pac-12 All- Academic, Tom Hansen Conference Medal, first-team All-Pac-12, Co-Team MVP, Cal s Ben Furth Award, Golden Bear Achievement Award, The Ben Hogan Award Semifinalist, and September 2013 Pac-12 Men s Golfer of the Month. Stalter joined Hagy on the All-Nicklaus Team, as well as the first-team Division I PING All-American and All-West Region squads, while adding second-team All- American recognition from Golfweek. He was also a national finalist for the Byron Nelson Award, a first-team All-Pac-12 pick, an honorable mention Pac-12 All-Academic selection and the team s co-mvp along with Hagy. Hagy (Jack Nicklaus Invitational, Aggie Invitational, Arizona Intercollegiate) and Stalter (Alister MacKenzie Invitational, Arizona Intercollegiate, National Invitational Tournament) were both three-time individual medalists including a shared title at the Arizona Intercollegiate, which was one shy of the single-season school record of four set by Kim in Stalter was Cal s top finisher at the Pac-12 Championships (T4th) and NCAA Championships (T19th) with the best finishes of his career at both events, while Hagy led the Bears with a fifth-place showing at the NCAA Sugar Grove Regional. Hagy finished the season as the team's top nationally-ranked player at No. 6 nationally by Golfweek and Golfstat while Stalter was No. 17 according to both. Cal s season that was the best in the history of college golf earned Desimone the 2013 Dave Williams Eaton Golf Pride National Coach of the Year honor in Division I men s golf as well as Golfweek's National Coach of the Year. He was also the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season to mark the third time in his career he earned the award. The Bears posted the top 54-hole strokeplay score at the 2013 NCAA Championships hosted by Georgia Tech at the Capital City Club s Crabapple Course to earn the top seed for match play at the event for the first time in school history. Cal opened NCAA match play with a quarterfinal victory over Arizona State before a semifinal loss to Illinois ended an incredible season that saw the Bears move into the top spot in late-september and spend the remainder of the campaign as the nation s top-ranked team in all three sets of rankings (Golfstat, Golfweek, Golf World/Nike Golf) including the final version of each after the NCAA Championships despite their national semifinal loss. Cal set a modern-era NCAA win record in with 12 victories in 14 stroke-play tournaments, eclipsing the previously established mark of 10 by the Oklahoma State team. Cal s first five wins came in the fall at the Gopher Invitational, PING/Golfweek Preview (shared with Georgia Tech), Pac-12 Preview, Alister MacKenzie Invitational and Isleworth Collegiate Invitational to record the first sweep of its fall schedule in school history. In addition to finishing as the top team during stroke play at the NCAA Championships and winning titles at the NCAA Pullman Regional and Pac-12 Championships, the Bears had spring wins during the regular season at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, Fresno State Lexus Classic, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters and Western Intercollegiate. One of the two events the Bears did not win came when they were second by a single stroke at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational when Weaver was away playing at the Masters. Kim swept the Haskins Award, Jack Nicklaus Award and Golfweek/Sagarin Player of the Year in as he became the first Cal golfer to win national player of the year honors. In addition, Kim was one of three national finalists for The Ben Hogan Award presented by the Golf Coaches Association of America to the best college golfer in the nation for their amateur play over the previous 12 months. Kim, along with Homa and Weaver, was a GCAA/PING Division I first-team All- American while adding Golfweek first-team All-American honors, with Homa and Weaver second-team choices. All three were also GCAA/PING Division I All-West Region and first-team All-Pac-12 selections, while Hagy and Stalter were both GCAA/PING Division I and Golfweek second-team All-Americans, GCAA/PING Division I All-West Region picks and second-team All-Pac-12 choices. In addition, the Bears swept Pac-12 Men s Golfer of the Month honors in to become the first conference team to ever do so, with Men's Golf Annual Report

Kim (October 2012, March 2013) and Homa (September 2012, April 2013) winning twice each, and Stalter picking up the honor once (February 2013). A school-record six Cal players at least shared individual medalist honors a schoolrecord 10 times in led by the singleseason school-record four captured by Kim (Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, Arizona Intercollegiate, Fresno State Lexus Classic, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters). Homa (NCAA Championships, Pac-12 Championships) and Stalter (Arizona Intercollegiate, John A. Burns Intercollegiate) won twice each, with Homa becoming the first Cal player to ever win the NCAA title and the third to win the Pac-12 crown. Weaver (NCAA Pullman Regional) and Hagy (Alister MacKenzie Invitational) were individual medalists once each. The individual NCAA title earned Homa the Arnold Palmer Award presented by Callaway given annually to the individual medalist at the NCAA Championships, while Kim captured the Golfstat Cup given to a single player for all levels of collegiate golf with the lowest adjusted stroke average in the nation heading into the NCAA Championships. Kim (70.14), Homa (70.56), Stalter (70.68), Hagy (70.80) and Weaver (70.92) all finished with stroke-play averages under Kim was the No. 1 player nationally in the final rankings by Golfweek while he finished at No. 4 according to Golfstat. Cal had five players ranked in the final top 20 by Golfweek (No. 1 Kim, No. 11 Weaver, No. 12 Stalter, No. 13 Homa, No. 19 Hagy) and top 25 according to Golfstat (No. 4 Kim, No. 10 Homa, No. 16 Stalter, No. 22 Hagy, No. 23 Weaver). Weaver became the first current Cal player to compete in the Masters by qualifying for the 2013 event with a runner-up finish at the 2012 U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club. In addition, Weaver gained an exemption for the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion with his U.S. Amateur showing and was joined by Kim and Homa, who reached the U.S. Open through the 36-hole sectional qualifying. Kim was the low amateur at the U.S. Open with a tied for 17th place finish after rising as high as third on the leaderboard during the third round, while Weaver also made the cut. The trio became the first three players in recorded history from the same collegiate team to play in the same U.S. Open. Kim (United States), Stalter (Europe) and Weaver (United States) also played for their respective countries in the 2013 Palmer Cup at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware. Homa, Kim and Weaver later led Team USA to a victory in the 2013 Walker Cup at National Golf Links of America. Weaver became only the second player in the history of the sport to play in the Masters, Palmer Cup, U.S. Open and Walker Cup in the same calendar year in The string of exceptional play started in when Desimone was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the second time in his career and added GCAA/Eaton West Regional Coach of the Year honors for the first time. His squad reached the national semifinals and posted a series of firsts along the way that included a trip to NCAA Championships match play as well as a match-play victory over San Diego State in the quarterfinals of the event hosted by USC at The Riviera Country Club. Cal also won NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles both for the first time in events hosted by Stanford and Oregon State, and posted a then-schoolrecord six tournament wins. Cal finished the season ranked No. 3 by both Golfstat and in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Coaches Poll, while Golfweek put the Bears at No. 6. The squad featured three GCAA/PING Division I All-Americans in Hagy, Homa and Kim. Cal opened the campaign with a victory at the Wolverine Intercollegiate and also shared a win with Oregon at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational hosted by the Bears in the fall. The team s Pac-12 and NCAA Regional wins in the two events leading up to the NCAA Championships were preceded by victories at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate and ASU Thunderbird Invitational earlier in the spring. Cal also finished second twice by a single stroke during the spring schedule to host schools Arizona at the Arizona Intercollegiate and UNLV at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters. Hagy, Homa and Kim were each named second-team All- Pac-12 and shared team MVP honors, with Kim adding the squad s Newcomer of the Year award. Stalter was honorable mention all-conference and the team s Most Improved Player. Homa (71.19) narrowly edged Hagy (71.41) and Kim (71.41) for the team s lowest stroke average. Homa tied for ninth individually at the NCAA Championships, which at the time was the second-highest finish ever by a Cal player but is now fourth after being surpassed by both his own victory and Hagy tying for eighth in All three finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Stanford Regional with Hagy third, Kim tied for fourth and Homa tied for 10th, giving Cal three top-10 players at an NCAA Regional for the first time in school his- CALIFORN GOLDEN BEARS tory and making Homa the first player ever at Cal to finish in the top 10 in the same season at both the NCAA Championships and NCAA Regionals, with Hagy becoming the second in Hagy (T5th) and Stalter (T9th) also had top-10 showings at the Pac-12 Championships. Cal tied for 19th at the NCAA Championships at Karsten Creek to conclude a strong campaign in , reaching as high as No. 13 in the national polls and equaling a then-school record with three regular-season tournament wins (The Prestige at PGA WEST, Alister MacKenzie Invitational, John A. Burns Intercollegiate). All told, Cal had eight top-five finishes in , also taking third at the NCAA Arizona Regional, Windon Memorial and Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, placing fifth at the Pac-10 Championships Steve Desimone gives Sebastian Crampton some advice on the course. and tying for fifth at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. Weaver was named a GCAA/PING Division I All-American after posting an eighthplace finish at the NCAA Championships that at the time was the highest ever by a Cal player and is still tied for second. Stephen Hale, Homa and Eric Mina all picked up second-team All-Pac-10 selections, while Byeong-Hun An (Ben An) was an honorable mention choice. Homa was the team s lone individual medalist, sharing the title at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate before falling in a playoff. An had a stretch of top-notch golf in the fall to lead the Bears during back-to-back team victories when he placed third at The Prestige at PGA WEST before tying for second at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Cal had missed the NCAA Championships for five consecutive seasons before returning to its spot among the nation s elite with a 23rd-place finish in Cal qualified for the NCAA Championships at The Honors Course by tying for third at the NCAA San Di Men's Golf Annual Report 5

ego Regional. The Bears also posted three regular-season victories to tie a then-school record, winning the Spartan Golf Classic, Alister MacKenzie Invitational and Arizona Intercollegiate. Several individuals had tremendous accomplishments during the campaign, highlighted by the Pac-10 Championships individual medalist honors won by Mina at the event hosted by Arizona State. Mina is one of only three Cal golfers to ever capture the event, with Charlie Wi the first in 1995 and Homa the third in Mina, who earned GCAA/PING Division I All-American honors, also won at the Spartan Golf Classic while Hale captured the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Weaver became the first Cal player to finish in the top 10 at both the Pac-10 Championships and NCAA Regionals in the same season, tying for sixth and taking eighth. Prior to its five-year run of appearances at the NCAA Championships, the team s previous appearance at the event came at the end of the magical campaign when Desimone orchestrated one of the greatest stories in the history of college golf as Cal came from eight strokes behind UCLA on the final day of the event at The Homestead in Virginia to win the 2004 national title by six strokes over the Bruins. It was the culmination of a season in which the Bears had to overcome several injuries that spring but were able to play their best golf when it counted the most. As a result of his team s impressive accomplishment, Desimone was named Golfweek s Collegiate Coach of the Year and was honored as 2004 Grand Master of the Year by the Northern California Golf Association. Desimone jumpstarted Cal's journey to a national championship and the elite status the program enjoys today in the fall of 1979 when he came aboard as head coach to take over a program which had lost its varsity status following the previous season. Desimone was intent on not only returning the program to varsity status but taking it to a higher level. Among the first steps was the formation of the Cal Golf Committee in 1980, the primary support group for the men s golf team, which helped return the program to varsity status in By , Cal was ranked among the top 25 teams in the nation for the first time. One outstanding performance that season was a dramatic comeback at San Diego State s Frank Scott Memorial Tournament. Trailing fourth-ranked Fresno State by 17 shots going into the final round, the Bears rallied to win their first major championship in 17 years. Cal s success that season helped Desimone win Pac-10 Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors for the first time. During an outstanding campaign, Desimone brought the Bears program to a then-unprecedented level when the team Head coach Steve Desimone (right) poses with associate head coach Walter Chun and the 2004 NCAA Championships trophy. earned its first NCAA postseason berth in 26 seasons and first under Desimone by qualifying for an NCAA Regional. Cal had most recently competed in the 1964 NCAA Championships, but didn t actually earn its first berth until 1990 at New Mexico State, two years after the NCAA switched to a selection/qualifying format. Cal played in 13 tournaments that year, placing among the top 10 in all but two, including a then-regular-season school-recordtying three team titles and a tie for third place at the Pac-10 Championships. In addition, the Bears were ranked among the top 25 teams in the nation throughout the season. Ben Furth, the school s first All-American in men s golf and with his 2005 induction one of only two men s golfers along with Peter Tomasulo (2015) in the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame, was a major contributor to the Bears success. The following season came to a disappointing conclusion for Desimone and the Bears. A career-ending back injury to Furth brought to an end the hope that would surpass Cal s great season the preceding year. Off the course, however, another important step in the rebuilding of the program was undertaken. With the generous support of the Cal Golf Committee, a minimal amount of financial aid was offered to incoming student-athletes for the first time in 15 years. This was a critical step because it finally demonstrated the Bears were committed to competing nationally in all respects and gave Desimone a new and critical tool in recruiting. The season was historic as Cal qualified for the NCAA Championships via the NCAA Regionals for the first time ever and posted the best finish in school history at the time and still the fourth-best ever by taking sixth in the event hosted by Ohio State in Columbus with a lineup of Garrett Larson, Nic Marin, Rick Reinsberg, John Schweizer and Charlie Wi. Cal was appearing at the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1964 when there was no selection/qualifying format. The Bears were previously selected to play in their third NCAA Regional in six years and came up with a sixth-place showing at the event hosted by New Mexico in Albuquerque after a second-place finish to Arizona State at the Pac-10 Championships. Wi led the way by earning first-team All-American honors and was Cal s first Pac-10 individual champion, while Larson picked up honorable mention All-American recognition. Cal returned to the NCAA Championships for three consecutive years from , finishing 15th at New Mexico, 16th at Minnesota and 17th at Auburn, respectively. The Bears were tied for fourth at the NCAA Tempe Regional, fourth at the NCAA Tucson Regional and tied for 10th at the NCAA Madera Regional after winning a playoff to qualify for the NCAA Championships during those three seasons, after finishing fourth, fifth and third, at the Pac-10 Championships. The team led by All-American Dan Arroyo used the best final round of the day at the NCAA Tempe Regional to reach the NCAA Championships and then was the last team to make the cut at the national event before finishing 15th. Arroyo was back again in and led a now-veteran group that also included 2001 U.S. Amateur runner-up and 2002 Masters participant Robert Hamilton to its 16th-place showing. The Bears missed a playoff at the NCAA s to have an opportunity to make the cut by a single shot. The squad featured All-American Han Lee and current associate head coach Walter Chun. The Bears needed a dramatic finish at the 2000 NCAA Regional at Riverbend Golf Club in Madera when Chun birdied the last hole of the entire tournament to force a three-team playoff for the final spot to advance to the NCAA Championships. The Bears would eventually win the playoff on the third hole, beating Stanford and Idaho. At the NCAA s, Cal would miss making the cut by a single shot but Hamilton would move on in the championship as an individual. All told, Desimone has directed Cal to the NCAA Championships in 10 of the 13 appearances the Bears have made (1995, 98, 99, 2000, 04, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14), including the recent school-record stretch of five in a row. The Bears have played in all 20 of their NCAA Regionals (1990, 93, 95, 97, 98, 99, 2000, 01, 02, 03, 04, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15) under Desimone with a current school-record run of nine straight that has surpassed the Bears previous school mark of eight in a row from Desimone has a total of 64 stroke-play victories in his Cal career and has coached 14 All-Americans (Arroyo, Ban, Furth, Hagy, Men's Golf Annual Report

Homa, Jeff Hood, Kim, Larson, Lee, Mina, Stalter, Tomasulo, Weaver, Wi) who have earned 21 All-American honors including a school-record five during the season. Hagy was a three-time All-American, while Homa, Kim, Stalter, Tomasulo and Weaver were each named twice. The Bears have also had success in the classroom during Desimone s tenure with 13 All-America Scholars (Bill Albers, Scott Carlyle, Chun, Dan Coyle, Furth, George Gandranata, Hagy, Hale, Murphy, Stalter, Tomasulo, Weaver, Michael Wilson) that have combined to earn the award given only to juniors and seniors 23 times. Albers, Chun, Carlyle, Furth, Hagy, Hale, Stalter, Tomasulo, Weaver and Wilson were all two-time honorees. Carlyle was also selected a first-team Academic All-American in , while Hagy was a first-team Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men s At-Large selection in , becoming the first Cal golfer since Carlyle to earn first-team Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Hagy s academic prowess also helped earn him the Byron Nelson Award in , as well as the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a Tom Hansen Conference Medal. In addition, he was a third-team Capital One Academic All-America pick for the Division I Men s At-Large squad. In addition to their success both on and off the course at Cal, Desimone has coached several Cal players that have gone on to play professional golf including current PGA TOUR card holders in James Hahn and Kim. Hahn became the first former Cal player to win on the PGA TOUR when he was victorious on the third playoff hole of a three-way playoff at the 2015 Northern Trust Open at The Riviera Country Club. Hahn, who turned professional in 2003, is in his fourth season on the PGA TOUR in 2016, picking up his card after finishing fifth on the final Web.com Tour money list in Kim earned full-time PGA TOUR status in 2016 after finishing 13th on the Web.com Tour s regular-season money list in Kim had previously played in a total of four PGA TOUR events with two each in 2013 and He has earned approximately $500,000 in professional golf since An has had a tremendous amount of success on the European Tour, winning Rookie and Challenge Tour Graduate of the Year honors in 2015 after capturing the BMW PGA Championship among seven top-10 showings including top-four finishes in three of the four Final Series events. Wi is arguably the most successful former Cal golfer on the PGA TOUR, having finished second five times in his career among 22 finishes in the top 10, most recently at the 2012 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Steve Desimone (right) poses with GCAA President and BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank at Desimone's induction into the Golf Coaches Association of America's Hall of Fame on December 6, Desimone was also inducted into the Northern California Golf Association's Hall of Fame on February 5, He played primarily on the Web.com Tour during the 2015 season and is looking to regain his PGA TOUR card after 11 previous seasons on the tour. Wi has more than $10 million in golf earnings since turning professional in Homa, Tomasulo and Weaver are currently playing on the Web.com Tour, while Stalter is on the European Challenge Tour. All have played in PGA TOUR and Web.com Tour events along with Hagy, Hamilton, Jesse Ruda, Weaver and Wilson. Several others have played professionally on other tours around the globe, with Gandranata, Hagy, Jeff Hamm, Lee, Stalter, Fredrik Svanberg and Weaver also currently active in the professional ranks. Desimone and his players have also had success at high-level national and international events in the world of amateur golf. Desimone had the honor of being the head coach of the American team at the 2014 Palmer Cup at Walton Heath Golf Club near South of London while Hagy was one of his players. Kim, Stalter, Tomasulo and Weaver have also played in the Palmer Cup, while Homa, Kim and Weaver have competed in the Walker Cup. All of the players participated for their country in 2013 other than Tomasulo and Hagy, who participated in 2003 and 2014, respectively. Cal players made the strongest showing ever by active members of the same collegiate team at the U.S. Amateur in August of 2012 at Cherry Hills Country Club, when four of the school s national-best five qualifiers reached the Round of 64. Weaver finished as the runner up to earn his spot in the Masters, while Hagy reached the semifinals, Homa the Round of 32 and Kim the Round of 64. Walker Huddy was also a participant in the stroke-play portion of the event. CALIFORN GOLDEN BEARS The amateur play during the summer of 2010 was also noteworthy as a school-record six then-current Bears An, Jamie Coré, Homa, John Murphy, Ben Mangum and Mina qualified for the U.S. Amateur at Chambers Bay. No other school in the country had as many qualifiers. An, an incoming freshman at the time who had become the event s youngest winner ever at the age of 17 in 2009 at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla., reached the 2010 semifinals while attempting to defend his title. Homa made the quarterfinals before falling to his future Cal teammate An. Cal players have also won numerous highprofile amateur competitions including wins by current players Ban (California Amateur) and Morikawa (Trans-Mississippi Championship) in the summer of Desimone has also earned several other prestigious honors most recently when the Northern California Golf Association inducted him into its Hall of Fame in The previous year the California Golf Writers & Broadcasters Association made Desimone the first coach to receive the Jack Lemmon Ambassador of Golf Award. Both honors were presented in February at the CGWBA s annual gala event during the week of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Three years earlier, Desimone was one of seven members of the 2010 class inducted into the GCAA Hall of Fame during the organization's Reception and Awards Banquet at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas. In addition to his role as Cal s head coach, Desimone is also the former manager of the University of California Golf Club ( ), a 130-member associate club of the Northern California Golf Association, as well as a former member of the PING Advisory Committee for college golf. In addition, he served two stints on the NCAA Pacific Region Selection Committee for the NCAA West Regional ( , ) and was on the campus-wide NCAA Self-Certification Committee in the mid-1990 s. Desimone played men s basketball for the Bears as an undergraduate and then served in the United States military before returning to Cal to earn a pair of bachelor s degrees by completing a double major in history and physical education, while also earning his master s degree in physical education. After graduating from Cal, Desimone became the Director of Athletics at the College Preparatory School in Oakland where he remained until Desimone returned to Cal in 1979 as the men s golf head coach, and shared responsibilities with both jobs until 1988, when he joined Cal on a full-time basis. Desimone lives in Orinda with his wife, Linda. The couple has two children who live in Minneapolis. Kim graduated in 2006 from Cal Poly and Robert is a 2008 graduate of Northern Michigan Men's Golf Annual Report 7

WALTER CHUN Associate Head Coach 12th Season Cal, 2001 Walter Chun is in his 18th season associated with the Cal men s golf program in , his 12th campaign on the Golden Bears coaching staff and his seventh as associate head coach. Chun was promoted to the position he now holds in September of 2009 after five seasons as an assistant coach. He was also an administrative assistant for the program for two seasons ( ) including the team s lone national title to cap the campaign. Cal reached the NCAA Championships in each of Chun's first five campaigns in his current role after a previous five-year absence. Walter and I are in this together, head coach Steve Desimone said. We talk constantly about what we re doing and how we re doing it. We re always looking to find ways to improve and be a better team. What one of us doesn t think of the other one does. That s how a good team and a good staff work. He s been a tremendous asset, ally and friend. I could never say enough good things about Walter. Chun was instrumental in the accomplishments achieved during the golden era of the program from and also in the team s recruiting efforts to begin restocking the roster with highly-ranked recruiting classes in addition to player development. The recruiting classes that have brought in this season's freshmen and sophomores are the latest in a long list of players Chun has helped recruit and develop. Many have turned into top-notch golfers including Byeong-Hun An (Ben An) after he became the youngest champion in the history of the U.S. Amateur at the age of 17 in 2009 in addition to Brandon Hagy (All-America Scholar, All-Nicklaus Team, The Ben Hogan Award Semifinalist, Byron Nelson Trophy, firstteam Academic All-American, first-team All-American, Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Palmer Cup); Stephen Hale (All-America Scholar, All-Pac-10); Max Homa (firstteam All-American, NCAA Champion, Pac-12 Champion, U.S. Open, Walker Cup); Michael Kim (All-Nicklaus Team, first-team All-American, Palmer Cup, Unanimous National Player of the Year, U.S. Open, Walker Cup); Eric Mina (All-American, Pac-10 Champion); Joël Stalter (All-America Scholar, All-Nicklaus Team, firstteam All-American, Palmer Cup); and Michael Weaver (All-America Scholar, first-team All- American, Masters, Palmer Cup, U.S. Open, Walker Cup). Walter has really good interpersonal skills, great instincts and connects with young people, Desimone said. With Walter you know you will get as genuine of a human being as you will ever find, which I think relates very well to recruits and their parents. He s bright, articulate and a great representative of our program and the University of California. The most recent of those two groups arrived at Cal in with Colin Morikawa leading the team in the fall of 2015 with a stroke average when the Bears won twice (Inverness Intercollegiate, Alister MacKenzie Invitational) among top-three finishes in all five events including an impressive third-place showing at the prestigious Tavistock Collegiate Invitational annually featuring one of college golf's top fields. KK Limbhasut and Sebastian Crampton headed the freshmen class that ushered in a new era for Cal men s golf. Crampton, Ben Doyle and Limbhasut saw extensive action as true freshmen for a team that established a new school record with its ninth straight NCAA Regional appearance. Burns Intercollegiate, National Invitational Tournament) for the fourth-highest win total in school history and extended its school-record string of three or more victories in a season to six. Cal also spent most of the season ranked in the top 25, finishing No. 24 (Golfstat) and No. 26 (Bushnell Golfweek, Golfweek/ Sagarin) despite a roster with no seniors. Limbhasut was a huge part of Cal s best moments in and certainly had the hot hand down the stretch, finishing tied for fourth at the NCAA Lubbock Regional and tied for sixth at the Pac-12 Championships to equal the best showing ever by a Cal freshman at both events while also becoming only the third player in school history to finish in the top 10 at both. Limbhasut completed his first campaign at Cal with five top-five showings, six in the top 10 and eight in the top 15 to lead Cal in all three categories. The Division I PING All-West Region, honorable mention All-Pac-12, Pac-12 All-Freshman team and Cal Newcomer of the Year selection also led the Bears with a stroke average and was the only Cal player to participate in each of the team s 13 events and 40 rounds. Crampton earned honorable mention Pac-12 All-Freshman honors and finished fourth on the team with a stroke average, while placing in the top 10 on five occasions and adding another top-15 showing with a tied for 14th place finish at the NCAA Lubbock Regional. Doyle played in eight of 13 events highlighted by his career-best tied for sixth showing at the Arizona Intercollegiate. Limbhasut finished the season ranked among the nation s top 100 by both Golfweek/Sagarin (No. 77) and Golfstat (No. 92). Walter Chun shares advice with Shotaro Ban for his next shot Men's Golf Annual Report

In addition to his recruiting contributions, Chun played a huge role when the golden era came to an end following the campaign when four of the team s five players at the NCAA Championships were seniors but not before the Bears extended their schoolrecord string of appearances at the national finals to five seasons in a row, something only six teams accomplished during the same period. The accomplishments of the last three teams of the era were unprecedented not only at Cal but on a national level as the Bears won 24 of 40 stroke-play events and were in the top five on 38 of those occasions as well as each of its four match-play tournaments during the period. The final stretch of the era also included two appearances in the national semifinals to wrap the and seasons, a singleseason NCAA record 12 stroke-play victories in when the Bears were widely thought to have recorded the best season in the history of college golf, and both the first two NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles in school history during the and campaigns. Cal spent nearly the entire season as the nation s topranked team and despite a second straight defeat in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships, remained No. 1 in all three final national polls with both the Golfweek/Sagarin and Golfstat rankings released following the NCAA Championships and the Golf World/Nike Golf poll prior to the event. The Bears had several firsts in , including an NCAA Championships matchplay victory over San Diego State in the quarterfinals, a trip to match play at the NCAA Championships, NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles, a then-school-record six victories, and top-five finishes in all 12 stroke-play events and 15 tournaments overall. Chun has also been recognized nationally for his coaching exploits. He was honored with the Jan Strickland Award as the nation s top assistant coach for his work during the season. In June of 2009, he served as a Team USA assistant coach for the Palmer Cup. Chun began his affiliation with Cal in 1997 as a player and was a two-time team captain while competing in three NCAA West Regionals ( ) and once at the NCAA Championships (2000). Chun also qualified for two U.S. Amateur Championships, the first in 1999 at Pebble Beach and the second in 2002 at Oakland Hills Country Club. Chun received a pair of degrees at Cal with a bachelor s from the Haas School of Business in 2001 and a master s from the Graduate School of Education in He was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection (2000, 01, 02) and a two-time All-America Scholar (2001, 02). GENE BAKKUM Volunteer Assistant Coach 14th Season UC Davis, 2000 Gene Bakkum is in his 14th season at Cal in and his 12th as a volunteer assistant coach after two previous campaigns from as the assistant coach for the Golden Bears. Prior to arriving at Cal, he served for two seasons as an assistant men s golf coach for his alma mater UC Davis ( ), helping the Aggies to a No. 1 ranking in Division II men s golf and back-toback NCAA West Regional appearances. Bakkum is also currently in his 12th year as assistant director of instruction at Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland and has instructed at the Nike Jr. Golf camps in Pebble Beach, where he served as assistant director. Bakkum was previously the director of the Nike Coaches All-Star Golf Academy in Phoenix, and has been affiliated with PGA of America since Gene works really well with young people, head coach Steve Desimone said. He is an absolute golf junkie and a very likeable person with a good sense of humor and fun attitude. He enjoys the game, loves to teach golf and is a tremendous short game instructor, which is critical when you are developing players. Gene has done some really great things with our players over the years. Bakkum and his wife, Alicia, reside in Pleasant Hill with their daughters Ava and Alaina. CALIFORN GOLDEN BEARS ALEX HELGANS Undergraduate Assistant Coach 1st Season Alex Helgans is in his first season as an undergraduate assistant at Cal in after spending the past two campaigns as a player on the Golden Bears roster. Helgans was the team s Co-Most Improved Player as a redshirt freshman in and earned the prestigious Ed Arnold Coaches Award as a sophomore. Helgans entered Cal as an undergraduate in the fall of 2012 and is on track to graduate from the prestigious Haas School of Business in May of His parents, Ted (1983) and Kimberly (1984), and his sister, Ashley (2015) are all Cal graduates. His father is also a key member of the Cal Golf Committee Men's Golf Annual Report 9

Outlook Head coach Steve Desimone is pointing freshman Collin Morikawa and his teammates into a new era. NEW ERA MOVING FULL STEAM AHEAD The new era of Cal men s golf that began in moved full steam ahead during the fall of 2015 as evidenced by the Golden Bears two victories and top-three showings in each of their other three events. Cal picked up wins at the Inverness Intercollegiate and its own Alister MacKenzie Invitational but arguably had its most notable outing in a third-place performance at the prestigious Tavistock Collegiate Invitational when the Bears led one of the best fields in college golf after each of the first two rounds before finishing third. Cal was also second at the season-opening Gopher Invitational and third at the Nick Watney Invitational. The Bears finished the fall ranked No. 16 by Golfstat, while checking in at No. 21 in both the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches and Golfweek/Sagarin polls. We had a tremendous fall and as a team I think what we discovered was that not only were we good but that we could be a whole lot better, Desimone said. We have spent a tremendous amount of time improving upon our weaknesses since then and are poised for one heck of a spring. One of the things that you have to have in any sport is confidence and with the way we played in the fall we got used to winning. We were confident we could compete with and beat some of the best teams in the country. A number of people have drawn similarities to the track we are on now to the track we were on a few years ago, Desimone added in reference to the beginning of the golden era of Cal men s golf that ended after the season. I think that s an appropriate comparison. As it was with the great group we had then, these guys totally get it. They understand what the possibilities are as a team and individually. They love the game, they have a passion for the game and they love to compete. When you have those components the chances are that great things will happen. We are on that track and the question is how soon will it all come to fruition. Six of the eight players that saw action for Cal in the fall of the new era s second season were either freshmen or sophomores with true freshmen Collin Morikawa and Jamie Cheatham joining sophomores KK Limbhasut and Sebastian Crampton, junior Walker Huddy and senior Shotaro Ban in the lineup. True freshman William Aldred and redshirt freshman Tanner Hughes also both played as individuals. Morikawa had a huge impact on the team with a team-leading stroke average, top-20 finishes in all five events and top-10 showings three times. He led the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational after each of the first two rounds before eventually dropping into a tie for seventh place finish when a final-round seven-over par 79 wiped out the seven shots under par he had earned in the first two rounds. Morikawa s best finish of the fall was a tied for sixth place showing at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. He also has a pair of recent notable victories Men's Golf Annual Report

in amateur action, taking individual medalist honors in July of 2015 at the Trans-Mississippi Championship before winning the Silicon Valley Amateur in January of No freshman in the history of this program has come close to doing what Collin did last fall with five top-20 showings and three in the top 10, Desimone said. He had a wonderful summer of amateur golf and then just kept right on going once he arrived at Cal. There is nothing out there that bothers him. He is just on cruise control mentally. Limbhasut picked up last fall right where he left off at the end of his rookie season with top-10 showings at each of the four tournaments he played in while also becoming the first Cal player to participate at the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship while representing his native Thailand that forced him to miss his only Cal event ever at the Nick Watney Invitational. Limbhasut s four top-10 showings led the squad with a fifth-place finish at the Inverness Intercollegiate. His stroke average was second on the team behind Morikawa after he had led the Bears with a stroke average and six top-10 finishes in his rookie season a year ago. I m somewhat at a loss with superlatives for KK, Desimone said. He just does everything well. He loves to compete. He loves golf morning, noon and night. He has an incredible passion for the game and knows how to win. I just love having him as part of the program. After earning honorable mention All-American honors from Golfweek as a junior, Ban had the team s third-best stroke average of the fall (71.67) and was in the top 30 in all four of his events including a best of tied for 14th at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational following a summer that was highlighted by becoming Cal s first-ever winner at the California Amateur. Shotaro is quite a story, Desimone said. He came into Cal as a decent player, and after struggling with the transition to college as a freshman, he has developed and matured tremendously both as a player and a person. He loves the game so much and is just such a tremendously hard worker." Crampton was fourth on the team with a stroke average in the fall and had a pair of top-10 showings with a best of tied for sixth at the season-opening Gopher Invitational. Shotaro Ban CALIFORN GOLDEN BEARS The sky s the limit for Seb, Desimone said. He does so many things right and he continues to grow in the game. He has tremendous length and is an excellent iron player, plus he s working hard on his short game and his putting is improved from where he was a year ago. Huddy (73.67) had a top showing of tied for 19th at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, while the best finish for Cheatham (74.00) was tied for 24th at the Nick Watney Invitational. Hughes (72.00) and KK Limbhasut Collin Morikawa Men's Golf Annual Report 11

Sebastian Crampton Aldred (72.33) each played as an individual in one event. Other players on roster that have seen action at Cal include senior Cameron Shaw, junior Alexander Wilson and sophomore Ben Doyle. Shaw was one of the team s top players in the fall of 2014 when he shared individual medalist honors at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate after tying for second in his previous event at the Windon Memorial. He was in the top 25 in each of his other three outings that fall and twice more early in the spring of 2015 but has been hampered by injuries and illness since and failed to post another top-25 finish. But he is expected to be ready to go this spring and Desimone knows his re-emergence could be a key to the team s hopes. There s a scenario out there where things get very interesting, Desimone said when talking about Shaw s possible return to the lineup. Obviously it s been a rollercoaster ride with Cam. There has been brilliant golf and tough times. We re hoping and expecting that he s ready to play this spring. Wilson was in the lineup for nearly the entire 2015 spring highlighted by a huge performance at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters when he tied for 11th place against a field full of the nation s top players. But he was unable to get back into the lineup last fall. Alexander had a wonderful spring for us last year, Desimone said. He did not play this past fall because we are that much improved from where we were a year ago. He didn t play poorly in qualifying, but there are just more good players on this team now than there were last spring. We have much greater depth. Doyle saw action as a true freshman in highlighted by a career-best sixth-place showing at the Arizona Intercollegiate but will redshirt the campaign to work on his game and apply to Cal s prestigious Haas School of Business. Doyle has won a pair of key amateur events (Contra Costa Amateur, Christmas Classic) during his hiatus from college golf and Desimone expects big things when he returns. Ben is following in the footsteps of some of the best players we ve had here in recent years by taking a redshirt year to work on his game and focus on applying to the Haas School of Business, Desimone said. He s absolutely on track to be an excellent player and huge contributor to our lineup over the next three seasons when he returns. Sophomore Stephen Griggs and true freshmen Alex Park and Sean Yu did not play in the fall of 2015, with Park and Yu planning to redshirt in Cameron Shaw Men's Golf Annual Report

Walker Huddy Cal begins the spring portion of its schedule January at the Arizona Intercollegiate to be played at the Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. After the spring opener, the Bears move on to a stretch that has the squad going to Hawaii, Mexico and Las Vegas. Cal will be looking for a sixth consecutive victory at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by Hawai i February at the Wailua Golf Course on the island of Kauai. The Bears' current five-year win streak in the event is the longest in the tournament s history and last season Ban was the event s individual medalist as he captured his first collegiate title. The next two tournaments will feature fields among the best in college golf. Cal will play February 28 March 1 at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate for the first time in school history and participate in a collegiate event outside of the country for the first time since September of 2000 when the Bears played at the Topy Cub in Fukushima, Japan. The event is co-hosted by Arkansas and Houston at Los Cabos Querencia in Los Cabos, Mexico. Cal then closes out its pre-spring break schedule with a March 7-9 visit to the prestigious Southern Highlands Collegiate hosted by UNLV at the Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev. The Bears lone victory at the event came in After more than three weeks out of action over spring break, Cal will return to action by playing at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational for the first time in three seasons with the event hosted by Arizona State scheduled for April 2-3 at the ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. The Bears were second the last time they played the tournament in after their lone ASU Thunderbird Invitational win in Cal finishes the regular season locally April at the Western Intercollegiate hosted by San Jose State at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz. The Bears won the event in 2013 for only the second time in school history and the first time since The 2016 edition of the tournament is the 70th and will be conducted over three weekdays compared to recent years in which the 54 holes were played over both weekend days. Ban s second-place finish at the 2015 Western Intercollegiate was the best ever by a Cal player. The postseason begins April 29 May 1 at the Pac-12 Championships co-hosted by the Pac-12 and Utah at the Salt Lake Country Club in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Bears have won the conference tournament twice with the first in dramatic fashion at the 2012 Pac-12 Championships when Brandon Hagy forced a playoff with Oregon by sinking a 40-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore., before clinching the victory with a 25-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole. Cal cruised to a nine-stroke win at the 2013 Pac-12 Championship at the Los Angeles Country Club with Max Homa becoming the third individual medalist of the event in school history, joining Charlie Wi (1995) and Eric Mina (2010). The Pac-12 clearly is the best conference in college golf, Desimone said. The league is as wide open as it s been in a long time. You ve got a lot of teams that can realistically compete for the conference championship, and I think we are right in the middle of that mix. There s no one dominant team. After the Pac-12 title is decided NCAA postseason competition begins with Regional action May at a location yet to be determined. The six possible sites are Tuscaloosa, Ala. (Ol Colony Golf Club; Host Alabama); Tucson, Ariz. (The Gallery Golf Club; Host Arizona); Kohler, Wis. (Blackhawk Run Meadow Valley Course; Host Marquette); Albuquerque, N.M. (The Championship Golf Course at New Mexico; Host New Mexico); Stillwater, Okla. (Karsten Creek Golf Club; Host Oklahoma State); and Franklin, Tenn. (Vanderbilt Legends Club; Host Vanderbilt). Cal won its first two NCAA Regional titles at Stanford in 2012 and Pullman in 2013, while the Bears have qualified for NCAA Regional action 20 times in school history including a current record-setting string of nine straight. This season s NCAA Championships will be played May 27 June 1 and hosted by Oregon at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. Cal has made a total of 13 trips to the event and had qualified for a school-record five straight before missing the field in Cal was one of only six teams in the country to have played in all five NCAA Championships from The top 15 teams from the first 54 holes of stroke play Friday- Sunday at the NCAA Championships will move on to a fourth round Monday. The individual title will also be determined Monday among players from the top 15 teams and the top nine individuals not on one of those squads. The top eight teams after 72 holes will move on to match play with both the quarterfinals and semifinals to be conducted Tuesday and the championship match Wednesday. Golf Channel will provide extensive coverage of the NCAA Championships for the third consecutive season Men's Golf Annual Report 13

GOLDEN ERA (From left to right): Max Homa, Brandon Hagy, head coach Steve Desimone, Michael Weaver, Michael Kim and Joël Stalter. BEST COLLEGE TEAM EVER HIGHLIGHTS GOLDEN ERA The first time Cal head coach Steve Desimone saw Brandon Hagy, Max Homa and Michael Weaver together on the driving range as freshmen in the fall of 2009 he told associate head coach Walter Chun these guys are going to take us back to the NCAA Championships many times. Desimone s prophecy came true each of the next five years, something that had never been previously done in the history of the program. They fulfilled every one of those expectations and exceeded some, Desimone said. But not even what the most optimistic Desimone could have imagined in his wildest dreams was that the trio, along with Michael Kim and Joël Stalter, would form the core of what most agree was the best team in the history of college golf in The Golden Bears set an NCAA record by winning 12 of 14 stroke-play events including Pac-12 and NCAA Regional titles while also finishing eight shots ahead of the field during the stroke-play portion of the NCAA Champion- ships. Cal had such a dominant season that the Bears were the nation's unanimous No. 1 team despite being upset in match play by Illinois in the NCAA semifinals. Kim and Desimone were unanimously selected as the National Player and Coach of the Year in while each player of the core group earned All-American honors to make Cal the first team in the history of college golf to have five first or second-team All-Americans in the same season. Homa moved on to professional golf after the campaign and Kim turned professional in the middle of his junior season before the final four seniors from the era Hagy, Pace Johnson, Stalter and Weaver took one more shot at the 2014 NCAA Championships but fell just shy of a third straight trip to match play and left the era without a national title they came ever so painstakingly close to with semifinal finishes at both the 2012 and 2013 NCAA Championships. Even though it was tough to see the era finally came to a close, a look back at the five seasons from made the pain subside quickly. It was an amazing run, clearly one of the best in the history of college golf and I m so proud of them, Desimone said. Look at the overall picture of what these guys accomplished. They made five straight NCAA Championships, were the best team in the history of college golf in , and the following season a team that a lot of people thought would fall off the map when Michael Kim turned professional but continued to play great and won three times in the spring before coming so close to getting back into match play at the NCAA Championships. A few of the team highlights of the era in addition to the record-setting 12 stroke-play wins in included two appearances in the national semifinals in their five trips to the NCAA Championships, victories in 30 of 68 stroke-play events, and both the first two NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles in school history. In addition to the National Player of the Year and All-American honors, Kim was also Cal's first Pac-12 Player of the Year in and Homa captured the Bears' first NCAA individual title the same campaign. Hagy, Homa and Weaver also became the first three players in the history of the program to play at the NCAA Championships four times each. There was also a ton of success off the course, including the graduation of all four seniors, with Hagy, Stalter and Weaver picking up degrees from Cal s prestigious Haas School of Business. Hagy was an Academic All-American in each of his last two years while all three were All-America Scholars in their final two collegiate campaigns. Among the many honors in his Cal won a second straight NCAA Regional title in Pullman in 2013 with a team of (left to right) associate head coach Walter Chun, Michael Kim, Brandon Hagy, Michael Weaver, Max Homa, Joël Stalter and head coach Steve Desimone. Cal also captured a second straight Pac-12 title in 2013 with a team of (left to right) head coach Steve Desimone, Max Homa, Michael Kim, James Yoon, Joël Stalter, Michael Weaver, Brandon Hagy and associate head coach Walter Chun Men's Golf Annual Report

It was an amazing run, clearly one of the best in the history of college golf and I m so proud of them. Look at the overall picture of what these guys accomplished. They made five straight NCAA Championships and were the best team in the history of college golf in Steve Desimone 14 senior season, Hagy was also selected as the winner of the prestigious Byron Nelson Award that considers equally a nominee s entire collegiate academic and golf career, his character and integrity in college, and his community service. It was amazing, Hagy said. We won God knows how many tournaments. It s been an incredible ride seeing the rise of the program since I ve been here. I made great friends and had a lot of pretty incredible highs. The success also extended into the highest levels of amateur golf and professional events. Homa, Kim and Weaver became what is believed to be the first three players from one collegiate team to play in the same U.S. Open in Kim was the low amateur at the event, finishing in a tie for 17th after being as high as tied for third on the leaderboard late in the third round. Weaver became the first current Cal golfer to play in the Masters in 2013 after picking up an exemption from his runner-up showing at the 2012 U.S. Amateur. He would become only the second golfer in the history of the sport to play in the Masters, Palmer Cup, U.S. Open and Walker Cup in the same calendar year in Kim joined Weaver and helped lead the United States to victory at both the Palmer Cup and Walker Cup, while Homa joined Kim and Weaver for an American win in the Walker Cup. Stalter played against Kim and Weaver in the Palmer Cup as a member of Team Europe. Stalter had quite the collegiate career of his own, winning a school-record five times capped by a senior season in which he picked up three of those victories, earned first-team All-American honors for the first time in his career and had his top finishes at both the Pac-12 and NCAA Championships. Before I came to Cal I dreamed to play on a Top 10 team, Stalter said. Two years after I arrived we ended up being one of the best that has ever played. I don t know how it gets better. On and off the course it was just an unbelievable experience. The accomplishments weren t limited to the players. Max Homa In addition to being the unanimous National Coach of the Year in , Desimone also captured Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors both that season and the previous campaign in In addition, Desimone was inducted into the Hall of Fames of both the Golf Coaches Association of America and the Northern California Golf Association during the era. Without a doubt it was an incredible era with some of the best student-athletes in the history of both Cal Athletics and college golf, Desimone said. Those involved in our sport will be talking about what these young men accomplished for years and years. Speaking for Walter and myself it has been our honor to have coached these outstanding young men and we thank them for what they ve achieved and the legacy they have left. But as memorable as the five years of the golden era was for Cal the future promises great memories still to be created for the players who will look to continue that legacy. All of us worked hard and steadily improved over the years and I hope that s something the younger guys on the team have taken note of, Weaver said. It s not so much because we re recognized for what we accomplished but so they know that it s out there for them. I want our group of players to leave a legacy at Cal. It was an honor to have been a part of this team for four years, Homa added. I hope we played a part in changing the future of the program for the better. Even though Desimone had wished for a better ending in the final season of the era when the team came up just shy of a third straight trip to match play at the NCAA Championships, he perhaps expressed it best when he told a disappointed group of Bears in a team meeting after the final round that it was a phenomenal run and you all have the grandest of futures ahead of you. And regardless of what the future holds, the memories that were made at Cal will last a lifetime.
