1 Page 1 of 5 No BARBARA'S MESSAGE Personally, I would like to say how much I appreciate the former board members who continue to serve on the board this year-susan Church, Marcia Lee, Gwen Omori, Jeanette Takahashi, Kathy Ordway, Bev Kim and Susan Fujiki. We have an exciting year ahead with the 3 Team Event Tournaments, the Match Play and Stroke Play Tournament and the Senior Women s Tournament. We are adding an additional tournament this year which we are calling the Partners Away 4-Ball Tournament. It will be a 2-person, 1-Better Ball tournament held in Maui on October 14 and 15, Watch for details. At the Ho olaule a Awards on February 11th we will be honoring Jeannie Pak as HSWGA Golfer of the Year and Gwen Omori as HSWGA Volunteer of the Year. Congratulations to them for awards truly deserved! Our next event is our Spring Fling Team Event to be held on February 27, 2017 at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course. The application is now available on our website hswga.net. Have a wonderful 2017, Barb Barbara Schroeder, HSWGA President Aloha, We welcome a new member to our board this year, Shera Hiam. She is a member of Waialae Country and will serve as our Handicap Chairman. Also, we wish to express our thanks to Daryle Nekoba, who served as our Secretary for the last 3 years, for her dedication and many hours spent in helping us to revise our By-Laws we will miss her.

2 Page 2 of 5 COURSE RATING CENTRAL Susan Church, HSWGA Course Rating Chair HAPPY NEW YEAR! In my first Course Rating article for 2017, I d like to provide you with a recap of my articles from last year. In the first 3 articles, you were provided with the USGA shot yardages for both the scratch and bogey woman golfer: Tee Shot Subsequent Shots Scratch Golfer Bogey Golfer These yardages are taken from studies that the USGA continues to test and measure. I also explained the difference between the measured length which is the yardage listed for each hole on the scorecard versus the effective playing length that is determined by the following: - Dogleg/Layup: occurs when you hit a shorter shot to avoid a hazard or even just to avoid a bad lie. - Altitude: The only two courses in Hawaii that have altitude changes are Volcano CC and Makalei GC - Wind: when our trades are blowing at 20+ mph, they affect our playing length by either helping or hindering. - Roll: Fairways are not all created equally. As you all have experienced, some courses have hard (dry) fairways that roll forever and some have very soft fairways that stop short. - Elevation: Your tee or approach shot may not always be level. You may have to hit a blind shot up to an elevated green or you may have the benefit of hitting down to the green giving you the additional roll.

3 Page 3 of 4 Course Rating Central continued As you can see, these factors can either lengthen or shorten the yardage shown on the scorecard. As an example, we are often confused because a hole may measure at 275 yards (on the scorecard) which (according to the tables) the bogey golfer should get on in 2 shots but we don t always because it may have an uphill (elevation) shot against the wind with soft fairways (roll) and may be playing to an effective playing length of 300. So, you can see how the measured length differs from the effective playing length. In my next article, I will be discussing Obstacle Factors. These are the elements that impact the playing difficulty of the golf course and affects both the rating and slope. Factors that I will be discussing are: Topography: Your stance or lie of the ball. Fairway: This is the width of each fairway that could affect how you are able to keep your ball away from the rough. Green Target: The size of the green and how hard it is to get on it. Recovery and Rough: How difficult it is to recover if you miss your target. Bunkers: Number, sizes and depths. Out of Bounds/Extreme Rough: How close the hazard is to the middle of the fairway and the chances of you going out of bounds. Water Hazards: Again how close the hazard is to the middle of the fairway and the chances of your ball ending up in the hazard. Trees: Some courses have more than others and we ll discuss this also. Green Surface: The speed and undulation of the greens are a big part of the golf game. As they say, putting is half of our golf game. Until the next newsletter, hit em long and straight! Susan

Dinner is at 6:30 with the Awards presentation starting at 8. Anyone interested in attending, please contact HSWGA President Barbara Schroeder for details on tickets. Her many accomplishments in 2016 awarded Jeannie Pak HSWGA Women Golfer for In March, Jeannie was the Champion of the Women's Army. At the HSWGA Match Play in April, Jeannie won her match 3 & 2 against Mira Jang to become the Match Play Champion. May, at Mid Pacific Country in the Jennie K Tournament, she placed 7th overall. At the 108th Manoa Cup for the Inaugural Women's Division, Jeannie was a Quarterfinalist. July at the Waialae Women's, she was 3rd Overall. And at the HSWGA Stroke Play Tournament in October, Jeannie was Runner Up. Gwen Omori the HSWGA Volunteer of the Year, is the immediate past President, on the Course Rating Committee, a Rules Official and currently, the HSWGA Corresponding Secretary.
