July 2012 DESERT MASHIE NEWS 5 Iron Hello Mashies, Yes, this is the first letter from your president! I have been in office for six months, or ½ year; the time has really passed fast. I have learned a lot while working with a lot of folks with many great ideas and suggestions, which will help Desert Mashie to better achieve its goals. On May 16, we held a general meeting at Hensley & Company. There were 24 members in attendance. Here is a recap of the last six months. George Colebrook and I attended the WSGA Board Meeting from Feb. 23 to Feb. 25 in Los Angeles, CA. We covered several subjects and concerns, including, but not limited to: Increased WSGA membership Challenge Women In Golf to get 100 women to participate in the WSGA 58 th Annual Tournament in Reno in June. By-Laws and Constitution Reviewed the 2012 WSGA Annual Golf Tournament Budget Raffle Ticket sale required to offset some of the tournament costs Elected Dr. William Bill Dickey to Honorary membership as WSGA President Emeritus effective March 30, 2012 All in all, we had a good meeting, and covered many subjects. It wasn t until I became president of Desert Mashie and attended my first WSGA Board Meeting that I became aware of the many facets and functions involved and necessary in the administration of the Western States Golf Association. Our 64 th Annual Tournament was held in March, honoring Dr. William Bill Dickey s Birthday. Unfortunately, my wife and I were not able to attend due to our previous personal and financial commitment to go on a cruise at the very same time; however, I understand the tournament and event was a smashing success and was enjoyed by all. We are already making plans for our Desert Mashie Annual for next year which will be held on Friday, April 5, and Saturday, April 6, 2013, at the Legacy Golf Resort, and the Raven Golf Club. Both of these venues are located in Phoenix, and are within

close proximity to the following: Phoenix Airport miles; Arizona Mills shopping outlet & theater miles; and Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino miles. Below are some pictures of the beautiful Legacy Resort, as well as Hole # 8 at the Raven Golf Club. More information will be available within a month or two for your planning purposes. The final results of the WSGA Raffle Ticket sales are as follows: 1 st Place Mile High Sandbaggers GC 1502 tickets $3, nd Place Desert Mashie GC 1070 Tickets $2, The TOP INDIVIDUAL (raffle ticket sale) WINNER was our 1 and only Miz Bea Baker who sold 100 books. A Big and goes out to Bea.

There were 18 golfers plus 8 non-golfer spouses, family members and friends in attendance at WSGA s 58 th Annual in Reno last month. We were housed at the fabulous Peppermill Resort-Spa- Casino. Desert Mashie had the following 3 winners in the Slot Tournament: Jerry Ike Hill $ Cecil Woods $ Scott Edmonds $ There was a high-stakes Skins game on Tuesday, and even though there were no Desert Mashie winners in the Skins game, it was a good time to get an introduction to the Lakeridge Course which we would play again during the tournament. There were 300 golfers in the tournament, so we were split up on 3 courses Lakeridge, Red Hawk Lakes, and Red Hawk Hill. The forecast for Reno was between 81 and 85 degrees which I never thought much about, but discovered that it was much cooler than Phoenix; however, I don t believe the temperature got up to 80 on Saturday. I played on Red Hawk Hill course on Saturday, and it was so cold and windy that I had to buy a jacket to keep warm, but there was nothing I could do about the wind taking my ball wherever it pleased. Needless to say, a great time was had by all golfers, family members and friends. The following Desert Mashie members brought home trophies for their flights: Cecil Woods 1 st Low Net Jo Jo Bridgewaters 2 nd Low Net I sincerely thank everyone who traveled to Reno and represented Desert Mashie (very well, I might add) at WSGA s 58 th Annual. I felt a great sense of pride when our team marched in behind the Desert Mashie banner during the Opening Ceremonies. Based on the fact that we are the largest club in the Western States Golf Association, when I saw some of the other clubs participation rate, I started to wonder what could we do to get that kind of participation and representation from our club. As the Annual will be held at the same location for the next two years, I hope we will be able to garner more interest so we can have greater participation next year. Well, we have a year to think about it and make plans -- Let s get ready for next year! Our Desert Mashie Tournament Director, Pam Hill, has been working hard to ensure that we are playing nice tracks, in addition to keeping the price within our affordable range, so I ask that we all keep in mind that Pam is only as good as the members who come out and support her. Therefore, I ask that we all go to and review our remaining tournaments scheduled for this year, and sign up on line. Remember, great participation is necessary to enable Pam to negotiate great rates.

Relax on the course: If you feel tight and nervous on the course, push your shoulders up to your ears, hold it there for a few seconds and then let them drop. This will help you relax to make a good golf swing. Our annual Duel in the Desert with our sister club, Desert Trails, will be held this coming Saturday, July 7, at the Robson Ranch Golf Resort. Currently, there are only 3 golfers signed up on the website for the tournament. You have until July 6 to sign up to play in this tournament. So I urge you to come on out and let s make a great showing at this event. Hey, we have some more exciting news for you. Betty Shelton, our Special Events Chair, is making plans for us to charter a bus to go to Las Vegas to participate in Valley View Golf Club s Annual Tournament. The tournament will be on October 12 h to Oct. 14 th. Valley View makes such an outstanding showing at our tournaments, so I urge you to come on and let s get on the bus and go support Valley View. Remember thaw pasphen ni gsave, tassy ni gsave. Just a little scrabble for: what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.. Some of our senior members have voiced their concern about difficulty in playing from the more distant tees. With that in mind, we are looking into the feasibility of creating new tee box procedures for our senior golfers who have a Handicap Index of 22 or higher. These procedures would also apply to our golfers with medical or physical impairments that impede their ability to play golf from the more distant tees. Please contact Pam Hill (parpam1@yahoo.com) if you have input or you would be interested in receiving information on these procedures once the evaluation is complete. Our condolences and prayers go out to Richard (Dickie) and Robert (Bobbie C) Clayton whose brother, Charlie, passed away last month. Leroy H. James President

Emma Mosley Women In Golf Coordinator History was made at the 58 th Annual WSGA Golf Tournament this past weekend in Reno, Nevada. 105 women from 29 WSGA golf clubs teed up to play in the tournament. WIG was awarded $1000 for meeting the challenge. Women golfers made up 1/3 of the tournament field. AZ/CO had 9 women participating in the tournament; 5 Desert Mashie, 2 Mile Hi Golf Club and 2 Greenseekers. There were 7 Desert Mashie non golfer ladies at the tournament. We played 3 beautiful mountain golf courses. The 15 th hole on the Lakeridge Golf Course was especially challenging because of the island green. Congratulations go to AZ/CO WIG participants: JoJo Bridgewaters won 1 st Low Net in the Women A Flight. Gildred Barber won 2 nd Low Net in the Women A Flight. Carnell Wilson won 1 st Low Gross in the Women A Flight. Mile Hi Golf Club won the WSGA Team Competition. The WIG Summit Meeting was well attended and very informative. 11 FAMOUS QUOTE Achievements on the golf course are not what matters, decency and honesty are what matter. Tiger Woods HEARD A GOOD ONE. Two men playing golf were held up by two women playing in front of them. One man said: "I'll walk up to them and tell them to hurry up." When he returned he said: "I have a problem, one of the women is my wife and the other one is my mistress." The second man said: "I'll walk up to them and hurry them up. " He came back and said: "We both have the same problem. Even though we are at mid-year, it is not too late to renew your membership or become a new member of the Desert Mashie Golf Club. 13 Now that the temperatures are over 100 degrees, I thought this would be a good time to run this article again. Hydration on the Course Stay hydrated is a common phrase you often hear from playing sports and on the golf course. Optimal hydration can improve your golf game mentally and physically. Since the brain is made up of 85% of water and is water inefficient, it has top priority in regards to blood circulation. Drinking the correct amount of water will ensure optimal blood flow to the brain which will enable you to focus on the golf course. The human body is composed of 25% solid matter (solute) and 75% water (solvent). For instance, the nucleus pulposus of an intervertebral disc is composed mostly of water. The majority of the weight of the upper body is supported by this water volume in the disc; therefore proper hydration can be a preventative measure against low back pain. Water also acts as a lubricating agent for joints which can relieve pain from chronic joint pathologies. Now that you know the importance of proper hydration, the amount of water consumed per day is critical to reach this goal. Some people say drink lots of water. But what is a lot of water? Other say drink 8 glasses of water per day. This is not an accurate way to determine the amount of water to drink each day. For example if a female golfer weighs 100 pounds. 8 glasses of water may cause over hydration. On the other hand if a male golfer weighs 200 pounds, 8 glasses of water falls far below the correct amount of water. The optimal amount of water to drink is ½ your body weight (pounds) in ounces per day. For example, a 200 lb. person will need to drink 100 ounces of water per day. A key point to remember is that other fluids do not count toward your goal of ½ your bodyweight in ounces. Those fluids include: coffee, tea, juices, soda, milk, sports drinks, and flavored water. In fact, other fluids like sports drinks and juices can actually dehydrate the body because it takes water to actually dilute these high sugar drinks before it is assimilated in the body. Timing of water consumption is important to optimal hydration. Drinking water first thing in the morning is critical because during sleep the body becomes dehydrated. Therefore drinking water first thing in the morning is the first step to

optimal hydration. Start with 25% of your total water intake in the morning. If your water intake for the day is 100 ounces, you would consume 25 ounces in the morning. During a golf round you should consume 40% - 50% of your total daily intake of water. If your water intake for the day is 100 ounces, you would consume ounces of water on the golf course. The remaining water should be consumed throughout the day. The type of water you drink is important to achieving optimal hydration. 80% of bottled waters are filtered tap waters. Choose a bottled water that has approximately parts per million (mg/l) of dissolved solids. This ensures a proper amount of dissolved solids in the water to maintain proper hydration. High quality water sources include Evian, Fiji, and Trinity. Water from Reverse Osmosis units can be used but the dissolved solids can be quite low. A great way to remedy this situation is to add a small pinch of Celtic Sea Salt to every liter of water. Celtic Sea Salt is an organic, unrefined sea salt that has over 80 trace minerals that will help replenish the body with electrolytes. Not only does it replenish the electrolytes in the body, it is a great way to prevent muscle cramps. Another great benefit of using Celtic Sea Salt is the reduction of allergic tendencies. I have had great results with golfers that have allergic symptoms due to pollen and grass. Many have reported reduced symptoms of allergic reactions with the proper amount of water and the addition of Celtic Sea Salt. Please do not consume regular salt in the place of Celtic Sea Salt. Regular salt is just sodium chloride which can be quite toxic when consumed on its own without the other trace minerals. Drinking the proper amount and correct type of water may be the missing link to improving your golf game mentally and physically. So, here s drinking to your golf game and health.
