1 2016 Northern California Golf Association ANNUAL REPORT December 9, 2016

2 Report of the President I began my term as NCGA President with high hopes and expectations; and 2016 turned out to be a special year. In the Spring, the NCGA s highly successful Youth on Course program announced a partnership with The First Tee chapters as part of its national expansion. Youth on Course membership is nearly 19,000 strong with program roots in 12 regions across the U.S. We are extremely proud of what the YOC team has accomplished under the guidance of YOC Executive Director Adam Heieck and YOC Board President Bill Hammonds. It s a wonderful feeling knowing that we re helping these young people. They re not just golfers. They re talented individuals poised to become our next generation of great leaders. Always striving to fulfill our mission statement of promoting and supporting the game we all love, the NCGA tested new programming that will be expanded next year. This included several Saturday single-day net competitions, NCGA travel and NCGA PLAY! The latter offers shorter, faster and more affordable golf for players of all calibers (and most importantly is fun). In September, we again had the privilege of co-hosting the annual Champions Tour First Tee Open at our own Poppy Hills Golf Course. The event is not just a thrill for the participating juniors, but also the pros. As part of First Tee Open week, the NCGA held its annual Hall of Fame Night. Those inducted into the 2016 Class were former amateur legend Charles Seaver, women s golf pioneer Helen Lengfeld, The First Tee CEO Joe Louis Barrow, Jr. and eight-time major champion Tom Watson. We re proud to honor their contributions to the game and their legacies. Other great news was our growth as an association. Things went so well in 2016, in fact, that the NCGA won the USGA Award for Large Association Growth. This year marked our first increase in membership in 15 years and we re honored of this achievement. All NCGA members should feel proud to be part of a community of 147,000 fellow golfers, our highest since In celebration of these milestones and in appreciation of our members, there will be no dues increase for On the course, we crowned our first NCGA Women s Player of the Year (Sabrina Iqbal) and Senior Women s Player of the Year (Lynne Cowan). Shintaro Ban (Player of the Year), Dale Bouguennec (Senior POY) and Gary Vanier (Super Senior POY) were equally as deserving of their awards. Finally, we ve been pleased by the collaboration across the golf industry to support the game. We realize that to grow and sustain success, we must develop close working relationships with other entities. Over this past year, we ve taken steps to further our bonds with the USGA, The First Tee, the Pebble Beach Company, the NCPGA, the three women s golf associations in Northern California and with our cousins down south, the SCGA. As usual, it all would not have been possible without the service of the NCGA Board of Directors and the NCGA staff led by Executive Director Joe Huston. Their tireless efforts and dedication to our members are greatly appreciated. I m grateful for my turn at the helm and can leave knowing everything is in good hands with incoming 2017 President Pat Quinn. Thanks again, see you on the golf course. Sincerely, John Ronca, NCGA President 2016 Northern California Golf Association Annual Report 2

8 Poppy Holding Brad Shupe, General Manager Poppy Holding is the management corporation of Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach and Poppy Ridge in Livermore. Poppy Hills It has been over 2 years since the grand reopening of the new Poppy Hills. Water savings and improved playability were the focus of the work and it s exciting to see the success. The big issue in golf continues to be water, and our progressive renovation seemed to be the template for future design and operational procedures. We were thrilled to host educational workshops and meetings for the USGA, NGCOA, and GCSAA to share our practices and strategic results. In fact, Poppy Hills is leading sustainability solutions for the industry, and water usage is down 25%. The Champions Tour made its annual visit with the Nature Valley First Tee Open and attracted some great new names, including Vijay Singh, Bernhard Langer and John Daly. All participants were very complimentary of the course and conditioning. We look forward to welcoming Pure Insurance as the new title sponsor in Our support of Youth on Course expanded in 2016 with an expanded caddy program. A total of 657 loops were made by YOC caddies this summer generating almost $33,000 in scholarships. In addition to these scholarships, staff and patrons funded two Membership $4,000 and one $20,000 scholarships. We also hosted almost 1,200 rounds of junior golf at $5 while offering complimentary practice facilities for all YOC members. The NCGA membership really noticed the maturity of the new course and seemed to truly enjoy the experience, either as part of 60+ NCGA competitive events, the 220+ club events or just a foursome with friends. Nearly 40,000 of the 45,000 rounds played are by NCGA members and the total discounts earned through NCGA membership exceed $1,500,000. It is also interesting to note the average member is driving almost two hours, making Poppy Hills a true home course for all NCGA members, not just those in the Monterey area. Northern California Golf Association Annual Report 8

9 Poppy Holding Poppy Ridge This year was another great year at Poppy Ridge. Rounds have remained close to level with the previous year while golf revenues have risen slightly due to improved check-in procedures and reduction in 3rd party reservation services. Poppy Ridge continues to offer NCGA members one of the best golf values in Northern California. As mandated by the state, we were under a 25% mandatory irrigation water reduction. We were able to reduce our irrigation by 29% by again not filling on course water features and not irrigating non-play areas. Playing conditions did not suffer as the course continues to be one of the best conditioned courses in the local area. The Poppy Holding Board continues to invest in Poppy Ridge and the golf course and facilities continue to improve. Projects and Extra Focus in 2016 included: Adding two full-time greens keepers to the golf course maintenance staff. This is the second year in a row we have added to our course maintenance budget Converting the driving range landing area Membership to Bermuda grass to improve aesthetics and to save water in future years. Landscaped front of clubhouse, eliminating overgrown vegetation and replacing with drought resistant and appealing plants. Painting exterior of most of the clubhouse and replacing outside furniture. As always, a large focus has been on balancing nontraditional F&B business with the golf experience. As the clubhouse continues to be utilized as a banquet and wedding venue, our procedures and processes have improved to provide our NCGA members with the best experience possible while utilizing the building to maximize revenues.
