2 FACT SHEET The Rotary Club of Hampton Roads (RCHR) was chartered on February 22, At the time, the name of the Club was the Rotary Club of Tidewater. In 1989, by club election, the club changed its name to the Rotary Club of Hampton Roads. The RCHR is committed to making a difference in the Hampton Roads community and in the world. The RCHR is a part of Rotary International (RI). Rotary International is the world's first service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide. The world's Rotary clubs meet weekly and are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. ROTARY S ORIGIN: The world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, was formed on February 23, 1905 by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to capture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. The Rotary name derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices. MEMBERSHIP: The Rotary Club of Hampton Roads currently has 70 members. Rotary club membership represents a cross section of the community's business and professional men and women. Rotary club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally, and internationally. FOCUS: The Rotary Club of Hampton Roads is committed to Rotary International s goals to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace, and eradicate polio under the motto Service Above Self. RCHR WEEKLY MEETINGS: Members and guests meet Friday mornings at 7:30 AM at the Holiday Inn Executive Center located at 5655 Greenwich Road in Virginia Beach, VA. Breakfast costs $13/person. FUNDRAISERS: Bowl A Thon: This is the RCHR s largest fund raiser which provides an opportunity for Rotarians, their families, friends and the community to come together to bowl and raise money to support multiple charities in the community. This year we raised $42,300 and we are supporting 11 charities including the RCHR Donor Advised Fund which is an endowment program for the club with Rotary International. Putt Putt Golf: The RCHR hosts the Putt Putt Golf Tournament every year to raise money to provide grants to local teachers who best exemplify the basic principle of the Rotary motto: Service Above Self. THE ROTARY CLUB OF HAMPTON ROADS FOUNDATION: The Rotary Club of Hampton Roads Foundation was established in 2009 as a 501(c)(3) organization. It allows the club to manage all income and expenses related to its charitable activities in accordance with the IRS regulations for distribution of funds to charitable and educational organizations. By directing their donations to this organization, members are allowed to specify them as charitable contributions for income tax purposes. 3 THE CORNERSTONES OF ROTARY AVENUES OF SERVICE: The Avenues of Service are Rotary s philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based: Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club. Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards. Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community. International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace. New Generations Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities, service projects, and exchange programs. FOUR WAY TEST: In 1932, Herbert J. Taylor wrote down four questions on a small white piece of paper to serve as an "ethical yardstick" for his employees. His simple creation has come to be known as The Four Way Test. Revered by Rotarians, it has been translated into more than 100 languages and is recited weekly at club meetings around the globe. Of the things we think, say or do 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? 3
