March/April 2013 DESERT MASHIE NEWS 5 Iron org From the President: We wrapped up our 65 th Annual Tournament a few weeks ago. The weather was perfect, and we had 100 golfers playing in the tournament. I am proud of the Desert Mashie participation. One of our major concerns, was to get our home Club participation rate up, and we were successful in that effort. This time, we had a 50/50 split -- 50% Desert Mashie, and 50% guests and visiting clubs. All-in-all, the tournament was a success, and we enjoyed seeing and mingling with our friends and buddies whom we have had the privilege of golfing with over the years. After all, that s what it s all about having a couple of good rounds of golf, and renewing our friendships. The results of this tournament are listed later in this newsletter. The Board has approved a Scholarship Program which is open to all Arizona college-bound students. The applicant could either be a new college student or a returning college student. The deadline for submitting applications for 2013 is September 1, I have sent a copy of the application to all Desert Mashie members. So, if you have a relative who lives in Arizona, is college-bound, or know of a student who would be interested in applying for one of our scholarships, please pass along a copy of this application. Next month some of us will be travelling to Reno, NV to participate in the Western States Golf Association (WSGA) 59 th Annual Tournament. The tournament will be held on June 27, 28 and 29, however, there are pretournament activities starting on Tuesday, June 25. The tournament will be played at the Red Hawk Hills and Lakes, and the Lake Ridge Golf Resorts; and the golf headquarters will be the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino. Several of us made this trip last year, and we all had a grand time. An added economic perk to this tournament is that bus transportation will be available from the hotel to the golf course each day of the tournament, so you do not need to have the added expense for car rental. Another perk is the Slot Tournament which was put on by the Hotel/Casino for the WSGA participants. Since this event was open to
golfers and non-golfers, needless to say, it was sold out! There were so many of us in the Slot Tournament, we had to take shifts. I didn t win anything, but three (3) of our members did. By the time the Slot Tournament was in full swing, it didn t matter who won, we were all so excited, we were cheering for everybody. There were 18 golfers plus 8 non-golfer spouses, family members and friends in attendance at WSGA s Annual in Reno last year. We have the largest membership base of all Western States clubs, but we were out-numbered at the Annual. Come on, members, let s exceed that 26 number this year. Registration is open on the WSGA website ( It s just over a month away, and only 6 Desert Mashie members have signed up so far. So come on Mashies, let s exceed last year s number of 26. Go to the website and get signed up now. We are also planning to have a Club picnic/outing later this year. We are currently thinking sometime after the weather cools down from our long hot summer, and after the Monsoon season - perhaps in the last Quarter of the year. I will keep you posted when plans have been finalized. Belated Birthday Wishes go out to Cecil Mosley, George Colebrook, Pollia Colebrook, Elbert Parker, Henry Kelly, and Neal James; and I am sending early Birthday Wishes to Marilyn Morris, Mack Johnson and Bonita Sims as they celebrate their birthdays during the month of May. We had a great turnout at our Members Appreciation (Free) Tournament on Sunday, May 5, at the Wigwam Golf Course. The results of our March and April tournaments are listed below, and since we re just a few days after our May tournament, I have included those results, as well.

Many people over swing and tee the ball lower on tee shots into the wind which can magnify many off center hits and overall bad swings. I would like to see players stay consistent with their set up during such tee shots and stay more focused on a weight shift to the left side for right handed players. This will assist the grip of the club staying in front of the club head which tends to deloft the driver and hit the ball lower. Try this with iron shots as well. by Lee Smith

Golf definition the month CHAPMAN SYSTEM "Chapman System" is the name of a 2-person team competition format. In the Chapman System, both players on a side tee off, then they switch balls. Player A plays Player B's drive, and vice-versa. Each player hits his or her second shot. They then select the best of the second shots, and from that point until the ball is holed they play only one ball in an alternate shot format. Got it? Hole In One POT The club has initiated a $500 Hole-in-One Pot. Any paid member who gets a hole-in-one during a Desert Mashie sponsored event will receive the $500. If there is more than one hole-in-one during the same event, the prize fund will be divided.

FAMOUS QUOTE No-one will ever have golf under his thumb. No round ever will be so good it could not have been better. Perhaps this is why golf is the greatest of games. You are not playing a human adversary; you are playing a game. You are playing old man par. - Bobby Jones HEARD A GOOD ONE. God's Funny Side As a young man, Edgar was an exceptional golfer. At the age of 26, however, he decided to become a priest, and joined a rather peculiar order. He took the usual vows of poverty and chastity, but his order also required that he quit golf and never play again. This was particularly difficult for Edgar, but he agreed and was finally ordained a priest. One Sunday morning, the Reverend Father Edgar woke up and realizing it was an exceptionally beautiful and sunny early spring day, decided he just had to play golf. So... he told the Bishop he was feeling sick and convinced him to say Mass for him that day. As soon as the Bishop left the room, Father Edgar headed out of town to a golf course about forty miles away. This way he knew he wouldn't accidentally meet anyone he knew from his parish. Setting up on the first tee, he was alone. After all, it was Sunday morning and everyone else was in church! At about this time, Saint Peter leaned over to the Lord while looking down from the heavens and exclaimed, "You're not going to let him get away with this, are you?" The Lord sighed, and said, "No, I guess not. "Just then Father Edgar hit the ball and it shot straight towards the pin, dropping just short of it, rolled up and fell into the hole. It was a 420 yard hole in one! St. Peter was astonished. He looked at the Lord and asked, "Why did you let him do that?" The Lord smiled and replied,"who is he going to tell?"

Now that the temperatures are rising again, I thought this would be a good time to run this article again. Hydration on the Course Stay hydrated is a common phrase you often hear from playing sports and on the golf course. Optimal hydration can improve your golf game mentally and physically. Since the brain is made up of 85% of water and is water inefficient, it has top priority in regards to blood circulation. Drinking the correct amount of water will ensure optimal blood flow to the brain which will enable you to focus on the golf course. The human body is composed of 25% solid matter (solute) and 75% water (solvent). For instance, the nucleus pulposus of an intervertebral disc is composed mostly of water. The majority of the weight of the upper body is supported by this water volume in the disc; therefore proper hydration can be a preventative measure against low back pain. Water also acts as a lubricating agent for joints which can relieve pain from chronic joint pathologies. Now that you know the importance of proper hydration, the amount of water consumed per day is critical to reach this goal. Some people say drink lots of water. But what is a lot of water? Other say drink 8 glasses of water per day. This is not an accurate way to determine the amount of water to drink each day. For example if a female golfer weighs 100 pounds. 8 glasses of water may cause over hydration. On the other hand if a male golfer weighs 200 pounds, 8 glasses of water falls far below the correct amount of water. The optimal amount of water to drink is ½ your body weight (pounds) in ounces per day. For example, a 200 lb. person will need to drink 100 ounces of water per day. A key point to remember is that other fluids do not count toward your goal of ½ your bodyweight in ounces. Those fluids include: coffee, tea, juices, soda, milk, sports drinks, and flavored water. In fact, other fluids like sports drinks and juices can actually dehydrate the body because it takes water to actually dilute these high sugar drinks before it is assimilated in the body. Timing of water consumption is important to optimal hydration. Drinking water first thing in the morning is critical because during sleep the body becomes dehydrated. Therefore drinking water first thing in the morning is the first step to optimal hydration. Start with 25% of your total water intake in the morning. If
your water intake for the day is 100 ounces, you would consume 25 ounces in the morning. During a golf round you should consume 40% - 50% of your total daily intake of water. If your water intake for the day is 100 ounces, you would consume ounces of water on the golf course. The remaining water should be consumed throughout the day. The type of water you drink is important to achieving optimal hydration. 80% of bottled waters are filtered tap waters. Choose a bottled water that has approximately parts per million (mg/l) of dissolved solids. This ensures a proper amount of dissolved solids in the water to maintain proper hydration. High quality water sources include Evian, Fiji, and Trinity. Water from Reverse Osmosis units can be used but the dissolved solids can be quite low. A great way to remedy this situation is to add a small pinch of Celtic Sea Salt to every liter of water. Celtic Sea Salt is an organic, unrefined sea salt that has over 80 trace minerals that will help replenish the body with electrolytes. Not only does it replenish the electrolytes in the body, it is a great way to prevent muscle cramps. Another great benefit of using Celtic Sea Salt is the reduction of allergic tendencies. I have had great results with golfers that have allergic symptoms due to pollen and grass. Many have reported reduced symptoms of allergic reactions with the proper amount of water and the addition of Celtic Sea Salt. Please do not consume regular salt in the place of Celtic Sea Salt. Regular salt is just sodium chloride which can be quite toxic when consumed on its own without the other trace minerals. Drinking the proper amount and correct type of water may be the missing link to improving your golf game mentally and physically. So, here s drinking to your golf game and health.
