MEET VALE AND SHEA When the mother of identical twins Vale and Shea was just 16 weeks into her pregnancy, the multiples were found to have twin-twin transfusion syndrome, a condition in which blood flows unequally between their shared placenta. The fluid imbalance can be fatal for both babies. Their mother, Cris, went to CHOP s Center for Fetal Diagnosis & Treatment, and had minimally invasive surgery to disconnect the twins shared blood vessels. The twins were born at 37 weeks, and today, Vale and Shea are happy, healthy toddlers.

MEET ANTHONY After finding an unusual lump on his head, Anthony s parents took the 5-year-old boy to the doctor and then to CHOP, where an X-ray showed a tumor under his scalp. Anthony had a pediatric cancer called Ewing sarcoma. The mass was removed during surgery. Then Anthony had 14 rounds of chemotherapy, each followed by an inpatient stay. He was finally able to attend kindergarten, which was delayed for a year due to his treatment.

MEET TOMMY Not long ago, dirt, sand or the water in a pond would have made 2-year-old Tommy very sick. Shortly after he was born, tests at CHOP revealed he had a rare immune-system deficiency: His white blood cells couldn t fight certain infections. He couldn t go to a park. He couldn t play with other kids. With his sister as the donor, a bone marrow transplant enabled his body to produce the needed infection-fighting blood cells. His disease has been eradicated.

Tissue deep in her lungs was becoming thick and stiff. Eventually her lungs wouldn t move enough oxygen into her bloodstream. Sofia began to have difficulty doing anything, even just walking, without supplemental oxygen. In April 2016, her family was notified of a donor; Sofia received a double lung transplant that day.
