Formats Contained in This WVMC Tournament Format Document Include: (Latest Update was on 7/1/18) 1. Individual Throw Out the Worst 2 Holes 2. Individual Modified Stableford 3. Individual Match Play versus PAR (Net) 4. Individual Skins 5. 2-Person Net BB (Partners Four Ball) 6. 2-Person Odd/Even Combined/NetBB 7. 2-Person Modified Pinehurst 8. 2-Person Person 2 NetBB of Person Cha-Cha-Cha (1-2-3) Person Lone Ranger Person ABCD Select One Scramble 13. Quota Format (Individual or Team) Person Scramble 15. Directors Championship (3 rounds, Saturdays) 1. Individual Throw Out the Worst Two Holes: Effective January, 2018 awards will be made on the results verus PAR on each remaining hole. This means that the highest two gross scores versus PAR will be discarded for the Gross standings/awards and the highest two Net scores versus PAR (along with the handicap stroke for that hole) will be discarded for the Net standings/awards. Awards will be indicated by overall score versus PAR, e.g. +6, +4, +3, +2, +0, -3, -4, etc. Ties will be broken by holes 10-18, 13-18, 16-18, 18, then it is a tie. 2. Individual Modified Stableford - Net (and Gross with sufficient competitors): This is a "points" system which means that points will be scored for each hole based on NET scores versus PAR (or GROSS scores with sufficient competitors). The points formula below provides a high reward for taking risks in "going-for-it" versus playing safe when approaching the green and flag stick: Points (Net and/or Gross): 7 for Dbl Eagle or Better; 5 for Eagle; 3 for Birdie: 1 for PAR; -1 for Bogey; -3 for Dbl Bogey or Worse. When reaching a NET double bogey, the player SHOULD pick-up and simply record the strokes taken plus the strokes the player thinks will take to hole the ball. Ties will be broken using Stableford points by holes 10-18, 13-18, 16-18, 18, then it is a tie. 3. Individual Match Play versus PAR (NET): Using your NET score, this is a match against the course (PAR) on a hole-by-hole basis. You'll enter a "+" for each hole where your net score is better than PAR. You'll enter a "-" for each hole where your net score is worse than PAR. Leave the match play cell blank if your net score matches PAR. If you have more "+ s" than "- s" at the end of 18 holes, you will have beaten PAR. If it is apparent that if you will NOT beat PAR, you MUST pick up on that hole and record your Gross score as the number of strokes that you've taken so far on that hole plus the number of strokes that YOU think you would have taken to hole out.
The round will be posted via our tournament program, as usual. Those who beat PAR will share in the scoring awards. If only a few players beat PAR, we'll extend the scoring awards to those who match PAR (with a lesser award for those matching PAR). 4. Individual Skins Format (Saturday/small tournaments): With a minimum of 13 competitors, awards will be made for Gross or Net Skins plus the 4 CTPs. In keeping with our long WVMC tradition of awarding one award per player per category, competitors who have a low Gross score on a hole AND a low Net Score on that same hole, will receive an award for only the Gross Skin. Flights may be introduced with 24+ competitors and as we get additional experience with this format. Example of a Skins Tournament Results: This scenario was based on running this format against the individual scoring for the recent 1/13/18 tournament. The "cross-outs" indicate the disallowing of Net Skins by the same player on the same hole the player had a Gross Skin. We typically would not include the cross outs in the awards table, but this provides an idea of the process. 11 of 19 competitors received awards (57.8%) PersonNet BB (Four Ball): This is a 2-Person Partner stroke play format whereby each player plays his/her own ball, but the team score for each hole is the lowest net score for the hole. If a player remains without a partner, he/she can still compete by use of a "blind partner". Tournament handicap allocations will be 90% for men and 95% for women (of Course Handicap). Additionally, course handicaps will be reduced by 10% for partners whose CHP's differ by more than 8 strokes. We will have Team CTP and Net Skins awards if we have a sufficient number of teams therefore, double the number of individual competitor requirements. Team partners will share equally in each team award. All awards will be team awards, to be shared equally between both players on each awarded team ( blind players excluded).
FOR THIS FORMAT, PLEASE PICK-UP WHEN IT IS CLEAR THAT YOUR PARTNER's NET SCORE WILL BE LOWER THAN YOUR NET SCORE (then record, for your gross score, the number of total strokes that YOU think it would have taken to hole out for that hole) Person Odd/Even Combined/NetBB: This is a 2-Person Partner stroke play format whereby each player plays his/her own ball and scores are posted. On the Odd holes, the team score is the combined Net score of both partners. On the Even holes, the team score is the best Net score of the partners. On Even holes, the partner with the highest Net score, may pick up in favor of the other partner's lower Net score. If you pick up on a hole, the player is to list the gross score for that hole as the number of strokes already taken plus the strokes that the player judges it would take to hole the ball. Tournament Handicap allocations will be 90% for men, 95% for women - of the Course Handicap. There will be a 10% reduction in each partners' course handicap if the partners' course handicaps are more than 8 strokes apart Person Modified Pinehurst (Chapman System): 2-Person team competition format. Both players tee off, then they switch golf balls. In other words, Player-A plays Player-B's drive, and vice versa (on the second shot). Each player hits the second shot. They then select the best of the second shots. They don't hit their own shot, which means that if they take Player-A's ball, Player-B hits Player-A's ball. From that point until the ball is holed they play only one ball in an Alternate Shot format. Tournament handicap allocations will be 60% of the lower course handicap + 40% of the higher course handicap. We will have Team CTP and Net Skins awards if we have a sufficient number of teams therefore, double the number of individual competitor requirements. Team partners will share equally in each team award Person 6-6-6: This is a 2-Person Partners event with a different team scoring format for each 6-holes. For holes 1-6, it is the best net score HCP allowances: men 90%, women 95%. For holes 7-12, it is the combined total of both net scores HCP; men 90%, women 95%. For holes 13-18, it is a scramble, gross score is recorded HCP: 35% of lower course handicap + 15% of higher course handicap. There will be 2 CTPs if 9 teams; 4 CTPs if 10+ teams; Skins if 13+ teams Person 2 Net Better Balls of 4: This is a 4-Player team event whereby the team score for each hole will be the sum of the 2 Best Net Scores for each hole. Each player plays his/her own ball. The gross score will be posted by our Tournament Program. USGA-recommended Tournament Handicap allocations will be 90% for men, 95% for women of the Course Handicap. If one or two players are clearly not going to be part of the team score on a hole and they pick-up, they should record the score that they feel would have taken to hole out.
There will be no skins or CTPs for this format Person Team Cha-Cha-Cha (1-2-3) Format Guidelines: This is a Cha-Cha-Cha tournament (or "1-2-3") using 4-person teams (that will in the same pairing groups). The team score for the first "Cha" is the lowest Net score of the team, the second "Cha" is the sum of the lowest 2 Net scores, the third "Cha" is the lowest of the 3 Net scores. The scoring rotation (1,2,3) for all groups will begin on the Hole-1 tee (i.e., NOT on a group's "starting hole"). All drives count, all strokes count. Individual scores will be posted by the Tournament Mangement (TM) program. A blind partner will be added for a group or groups that remain at 3 players. The "blind" will be selected randomly on the morning of the tournament. Players may sign-up for their whole team or sign-up as a player needing a team. The tournament handicap allowances will be 90% of course handicaps for men and 95% of course handicaps for women. For teams of 3 players, a blind partner will be added prior to start of the tournament. There will be no CTP or Skins awards for this format. Tournament handicaps will be set to 90% for men, 95% for women and applied after the course handicaps are computed. A group of 3 players will be "blind-teamed" with a player from the field in another group, prior to start of the tournament. The "blind entry" will not be an "awarded" entry. Pick-ups may be taken when it becomes clear that the lower 1, 2 or 3 balls have been holed or will be holed. If you pick up per this bullet, record your score for that hole as what you think you would have scored to hole-out Person Lone Ranger: The Lone Ranger format is a fun game that is played with foursomes. Every hole, one player in that foursome is assigned to be the Lone Ranger. On the Hole-#1, player in position 1 in the pairings will act as the Lone Ranger. On the Hole-#2, player in position 2 in the pairings will act as the Lone Ranger. On Hole-#3, player in position 3. On Hole-#4, player in position 4. The cycle then repeats throughout the rest of the round. When playing this format, you will count the Lone Ranger's ball as well as the best ball of the other 3 players. So, two balls will be counted on each hole. The Lone Ranger for each hole will be indicated on the scorecard in a separate row. Tournament handicaps will be set to 90% of men s course handicap and 95% of women s course handicap. Blind partners will be assigned to threesomes at check-in the morning of the tournament and they will fill the open player position regardless of course handicap relative to other players Person ABCD "Select One" Scramble: Each Player hits from the chosen ball, within one club length "through the green", and from the same spot on the green, bunker or hazard. Teams will be chosen/balanced by computer based upon Course Handicaps.
Prior to start of the tournament, each player must "Select One Hole" where only his/her drive will be used. Those holes will be marked by the "A" player on the team. No other drives will be made on the "Select One" Holes. The "Select One" player on the chosen hole hits a subsequent "provisional" or "re-do" tee shot. Each team will have A,B,C.D players, with a requirement of Three Drives from Players A & B and Two Drives from Players C & D, in addition to the Select One holes. Teams with only three players will alternate hitting another shot on each hole so that Four Balls are in play. One player on a three-player team will "Select Two" holes. There will be no CTP or Skins awards for this format. Tournament Handicap Allocations as a %age of Course Handicaps: 4-Persons: 20/15/10/5 (low to high handicaps); 3-Persons: 25/15/10: 2-Persons: 35/ Quota Tournament (Individual or Team) - Points Quota or Chicago : A "quota tournament" is a golf format in which golfers earn points for their scores on each hole. The aim of this format is to accumulate points to beat your preset goal (quota). Our tournament "base quota" is 36. The quota for each player is the "base quota (36) minus their Course Handicap". Here is a simple example: Base Quota: 36 John's Course Handicap: 10 John's Quota: 26 (John must accumulate more than 26 points to beat his quota). Points are earned per hole as follows, but based upon "gross scoring" (i.e., gross pars, birdies, etc.): Bogeys = 1, Pars = 2, Birdies = 3, Eagles = 4, Double Eagles = 5, Triple Eagles or better = 6, Hole in One = 6. Additional Info: Indvidual Quota Tournament handicap allocations will be at 100% of regular course handicaps. Tournament Handicaps for Team Quota format will be 90% for men, 95% for women, with an additional 10% reduction if partner handicaps differ by more than 8 strokes. Awards will be made versus points above each player s/team s quota (e.g., $4/point above quota) This format is similar to our Modified Stableford format except there is a preset amount of points to beat for each player and there are no negative points. To ensure that everyone starts with a positive quota, tournament handicaps will be maximized at 34 strokes (i.e., quota points = 2 for someone with a 34+ course handicap). Ties will be broken using points with a card match using the USGA method (last 9,6,3,1 holes). Playing Quota as a Team Tournament: Team quota is a format in which each golfer on a side is playing their own golf ball throughout. The team quota is the sum of each team player s quota. The object is to beat the team quota. For example, Player A finishes at +3, B at -6, C at +1 and D at +4. Add those up and the team points score in this example is Person Scramble
The tournament is played as a true scramble, with each player hitting from the chosen ball within one club length through-the-green, from the same spot on the green, and as close as possible to the same lie in hazards and bunkers. A ball, when placed, must remain in the same type of lie (e.g. remain in rough, remain in fairway) this is a WVMC scramble placement rule, differing from the golf drop rule, which does not have such a restriction. The tournament handicap allocations will be set to 35% of the lower course handicap and 15% of the higher course handicap. At least SIX (6) tee shots must be used from each player. Mark on the scorecard whose drive is being used by placing the score for that hole in the chosen player's row. Closest to the Pins awards will be shared by both team members. If Skins are awarded (dependent upon sufficient competitors), they will be shared by both team members. Tie breaking will be via the USGA Card Match method: Holes 10-18, then holes 13-18, then holes 16-18, then 18 and if still tied, it is recorded as a tie. 15. Directors Championship (3-Round Saturdays) This is a multi-round tournament sponsored/promoted by our WVMC committee chairpersons ("Directors"). It will be a "Multi-Round" individual stroke play format to be played over three (3) specific Saturday's. The 3-round cumulative gross and net results for each participant will determine either gross or net awards (gross biased over net). There will be an even number of gross and net "places". For example, with 24 participants, we expect to confer four (4) gross and four (4) net awards. All of the competitive fees will be disbursed to those 8 awards. This tournament will run concurrently with the three regularly-scheduled stroke play tournaments. However, the fee for this competition will be separate from the usual weekly optional side bet fee. The total fee to compete in this Director's Tournament will be $15 and it will cover all three rounds. Index allocations for this tournament will be 100% of the 3month Low Handicap Index as set for the most recent index report before each of the three rounds. Each participant must have an "earned" index which means that at least 5 rounds must have been played and posted prior to the first round Dates for the three rounds will be: 4/21, 5/5, 6/16. A rain-out would move a round to the next available month. Tees for this tournament will be Whites for men, Gold for women.
