August 2013 Golf Course Update Royal The Royal course continues to show consistent improvement and is excellent condition. All playing surfaces are healthy with good turf density and color. The greens are receiving weekly light verticut applications followed with light topdressing. These practices maintain smoothness and increased ball roll speed. The greens are also receiving consistent pencil tine aerifications weekly. This maintains good air/water movement through the soil profile and aids in increased root development. The greens are rolled after aerifying to regain smoothness and the practice goes virtually unnoticed. The fairways are in the best condition I have seen in quite some time. Excellent color and turf density is achieved with our ongoing liquid fertility program. The verticut applications applied earlier this summer have positively impacted the conditions we see today. The use of the growth regulator Primo is also used to minimize grass clippings and improve turf density. We have started circle cutting the fairways once weekly in order to increase playability by reducing grain and increase smoothness. The mower travels in a circular motion across the fairway versus straight up and down the length of the fairway. Essentially the grass is cut twice in separate directions and does not leave the fairway through this process. The roughs are also in excellent condition with good density and color. We have raised the height of cut up to 1.25 as compared to 3/4" we were at earlier this summer when we applied scalping practices to the roughs. Improved definition is noticed between fairway and rough with this adjustment. Royal #6 Green Royal #3 Green
Royal #8 Fairway after Circle Cut Circle Cutting #16 Fairway The Royal course received a bulk application of 100% slow release fertilizer on August 6 th. This allows slow consistent feeding for the next few months without any surges in growth. The application of Curfew soil fumigant for nematode control was carried out on July 28 th successfully. The weather cooperated and we were able to complete all greens and selected areas in tees, fairways, and roughs. Heavy irrigation followed application to seal and keep the Curfew gas in the soil as long as possible. The turf areas treated have recuperated very well and are showing positive signs of new growth both above (leaf) and below (root) the soil surface. Some lines continue to be noticeable but have minimal if any effect on playing conditions. We have taken soil samples prior to and after treatment. Recent samples should be received within the next 7 to 10 days. Curfew Application to Royal #8 and Sabal #17 Greens
Curfew Application Royal #9 Fairway Visible Injection Lines from Curfew #8 Fwy. Royal #6 Green Two Weeks after Application #16 Fwy. Two Weeks after Application The green committee has historically received input from the membership regarding coquina path areas throughout the golf courses. The committee met last spring and toured all of these areas individually to discuss possible modifications. Questions arose regarding the function and playability of these areas and following deliberation of the committee, changes were approved to three specific areas. The decision was made to narrow the coquina cart paths on holes 15 and 17 on Royal and number 6 on Sabal to a width of 7 to 8 feet. Number 15 Royal is almost complete lacking addition of coquina material and some minor clean-up. Since sod will not establish well on coquina material, all areas will have existing coquina removed and replaced with clean soil where sod is to be applied. Drainage areas were a concern on #15 and #17 Royal so some modifications were made. For example, at #15 we created a small berm so that the surface drainage would move to the existing drainage basins. This area came out well and has
added a benefit where you no longer see the path from the fairway. Another benefit is that the new grading deters balls from rolling into the adjacent bushes right of the path. The path on Royal #17 will have additional drainage installed since this area collects water on the approach side of the path. This area will also have coquina removed and replaced with clean fill prior to sod application. We will accomplish this work during our next closing which begins September 9 th. The area on #6 Sabal is complete where just a small area of coquina was removed, replaced with fill and sod applied. Tracking of coquina onto the green was an issue in this area. 5 The Royal course will close on September 9 th to carry out our final cultural practices of the summer. Greens, tees, fairways and approaches will be aerified and verticut followed by topdressing. We will open the Royal on or before October 14 th. Sabal The renovation and grow-in on holes #1-#6 and #16 - #18 are doing well for the most part and is on schedule. As usual there are some areas that are thin and being stubborn growing in. We will continue to push these areas with additional fertility and other practices to ensure we open on time. We are into the eighth week of the grow-in and the project is beginning to look like a golf course again. Tees and fairways are being cut out and mowed on a regular basis and the rough height of cut will be raised from 1.0 to 1.25 this week. We have been slicing, aerifying, and verticutting all areas to accomplish smoothness and improve density. Slicing/aerifying/verticutting the new grass runners creates new growth points for grass blades which increases density. Rolling is also being applied to help smooth tees and fairways. Topdressing of the tees is being done this week to also aid in leveling and smoothness. Both granular and liquid foliar applications of fertilizer are being utilized to provide proper nutrients for increased growth and maturity. Sabal #16 Looking Back to Tee Week 4 Same Area at Week 7 One thing we have to remember is that this grass is still very young and will take another full growing season, next summer, to fully mature. Until we build up some mat and a little thatch we will not experience the full maturity as we have on the Royal course.
#17 Looking Back Toward Tees Week 8 #16 at Week 8 Slicer Slicing on Sabal #1 Fairway We completed the final aerification of all greens and the tees and fairways on holes #7 - #15 last week and have made several verticut applications. The greens are healthy with excellent density and positive root growth. We will continue grooming, rolling, and will gradually lower the height of cut until desired putting quality is reached. Light verticutting followed by light topdressing will be applied weekly throughout the growing season. These practices will be reduced when the temperatures lower and the grass growth begins to slow. Selected tees are not doing well following the curfew application. The tees on #8 have a variety of different grasses and have all reacted differently to the curfew application. The white tee was replaced with Celebration sod last summer and is doing well. The gold and red tees remain a mixture of Tiffway 419 and common Bermuda grass and did not recuperate well from the curfew application. The common and 419 varieties are not nearly as strong as the Celebration and received chemical burn from the Curfew. Additional fertility is being applied and some areas may need sod. We will utilize various teeing areas for both the red and gold tees when
the course opens. Number 11 and 12 tees also received some damage from the Curfew however #11 is more of a shade issue from the trees located directly to the East of the tees. Areas that receive full sunlight are doing fine where shaded areas are showing stress. The fairways were verticut and aerified in two directions, this is done to minimize thatch and reduce compaction of the soil from heavy seasonal play. The roughs were also aerified along with the fairways and are fully recuperated in good condition. Verticutting Sabal #10 Green Verticutting New Celebration #2 Fairway Noticeable Thin Turf Where Shade Areas Exist - #11 Tee Sabal
Common Grounds As I reported last month, we had some lightning damage to several palm trees. Several palm trees across from the clubhouse and next to the putting green were replaced last week. We reduced the amount of trees in this location since the older tree created some visual issues with oncoming traffic from the left as you exited the parking area next to the putting green. Three large black olive trees were removed by the putting green and replaced with Sabal palms. The olive trees were beginning to creating a shade issue on the putting green thinning the turf. These trees also produced a tremendous amount of debris that made this area very messy resulting in additional labor to clean this area at least once daily. The replacement of the olive trees with the Sabal palms will eliminate shade issues and beautify this area. Five Palms Killed by Lightning Replacement with Three Trees Black Olive Trees by Putting Green Mess Trees Make by Starter Area
New Sabal Palm Trees at Starter Area The new chemical/fertilizer storage building and soil bins are progressing well. Daily activity has allowed this project to be on time without any hiccups. All electrical, plumbing, and air is complete with concrete path and aprons to the building scheduled for Friday 8/22. The new chemical storage building is state of the art with all mixing and loading of chemicals done inside the building as compared to outside mixing/loading that we have at our current site. The mix/load area has a sump in the floor that catches any spilled material and pumps this and rinse ate material into three separate holding tanks. Each tank is utilized for each specific product used into insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides. The material collected in these containers is re-used in future applications eliminating any possibility of contaminating non target areas. This building will also house all spray application equipment. This increases safety by keeping this equipment away from employees not working with the equipment. New Chemical/Fertilizer Building and Soil Bins
Rinse Holding Tanks for Insecticide, Fungicide, and Herbicide. Sump in Floor Collects Material and is Pumped into Tanks Path into Maintenance Facility from #13 Royal Formed and Ready for Concrete This brings everything up to date. I hope everyone is having a great summer and staying cool. I will provide another update in September to keep everyone informed of our progress. Greg Kriesch Director of Golf Course Operations
