1 MENDON GOLF CLUB GROUNDS DEPARTMENT HAZARDOUS MATERIAL STANDARD OPERATING PROCEEDURES (SOP) General Policy: The Mendon Golf Club Grounds Department has created this document to outline the procedures for handling hazardous materials. Procedures include compiling a hazardous chemicals inventory, cataloging materials safety data sheets (MSDS) for all chemicals on the list, ensuring that all containers of hazardous chemicals are properly labeled, procedures for ordering materials and by training all employees who may be exposed to hazardous chemicals under normal working conditions or during an emergency situation on: 1. The detection of the presence or release of a hazardous chemical in the work area; 2. The physical and health hazards of the chemicals in the work area; 3. The measures employees can take to protect themselves from these hazards; and 4. The details of this program including an explanation of the labeling system and the material safety data sheet, and how employees can obtain and use the appropriate hazard information. The Golf Course Superintendent is the program coordinator. Copies of the written program can be obtained in the superintendent s office in the Grounds Maintenance Building. In the event the Golf Course Superintendent in unavailable or on a leave of absence then the Turf Equipment Technician will be the interim program coordinator. Inventory of Hazardous Materials: An inventory of all hazardous materials in the workplace is maintained. Copies of this inventory are found in the MSDS binders located in the Grounds Maintenance Building, Pesticide Storage Building and in Appendix A of this written program. This inventory shall include the name of the material, EPA Number (if applicable) and the amount of material in stock. Inventories should be updated on a monthly basis.

2 Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS): Material Safety Data Sheets are maintained for each known hazardous chemical in the workplace. Material safety data sheets can be found in the Binders located in the Grounds Maintenance and Pesticide Storage Buildings. In the event of an emergency, Material Safety Data Sheets are located and readily accessible in each work area. The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for maintaining and updating the MSDS files whenever a new hazardous chemical is introduced into the workplace. Any hazardous chemicals received in the work place must have an MSDS Sheet accompanied with it. All vendors must be contacted and made aware that any deliveries made to the Country Club of Mendon must have a MSDS accompanying the delivery. If a hazardous chemical is received in the workplace without the proper MSDS, the employee receiving the product will make note and notify the Golf Course Superintendent or any of the supervisors listed in Appendix B of this program know. The Golf Course Superintendent will then request the MSDS from the manufacturer, distributor or retailer of the product. Labels and Warnings: All hazardous chemicals will be stored in their original or approved containers with the proper labels attached. Any container not properly labeled should be given to the Golf Course Superintendent or any of the supervisors listed in the Appendix B of this written program. Each container of hazardous chemicals in the work place must be labeled with: 1. Identity of the hazardous chemical; 2. Appropriate hazard warnings; 3. EPA Registration number (if applicable); and 4. Name and address of the chemical manufacturer, importer or other responsible part.

3 Any container on which the label has been defaced or removed will be relabeled immediately with the appropriate information or properly disposed of. All containers not properly labeled should be given to the Golf Course Superintendent or any of the supervisors listed in Appendix B of this written program. Container labels and warnings will be legible, in English, and prominently displayed on the container and in the workplace. The Golf Course Superintendent will ensure that all chemicals are labeled with the identity of the hazardous chemical(s) and the proper hazard warnings. Non-Routine Tasks: The Golf Course Superintendent or any of the supervisors listed in Appendix B of this written program will inform employees of any tasks that may arise which would involve possible exposure to hazardous chemicals. Review of safe work practices, MSDS s and use of personal protective equipment will be conducted prior to the start of such tasks. Emergency Procedures for Exposed Workers: Required personal protective equipment is available from the Golf Course Superintendent or any of the supervisors listed in Appendix B of this written program. In the event that an employee is exposed to a hazardous chemical above the permitted level, the MSDS for that chemical will be referenced immediately and the emergency response procedure recommendations will be followed. Any incident of employee over-exposure to hazardous chemical must be reported immediately to the Golf Course Superintendent or any of the supervisors listed in Appendix B of this written program. First-aid cabinet is located in the new building at the maintenance facility. Emergency contact numbers are posted throughout the maintenance facility.

4 Spill response: In the event of a spill or release the Golf Course Superintendent or designated supervisor must be notified immediately. Personnel should insure that proper measures are taken to prevent material from entering any storm sewers. Personnel protective equipment (PPE) should be used in responding to and cleaning up any spills. PPE is located in the Grounds Maintenance building. A list of available PPE is located in Appendix C. Any waste generated as part of the cleanup must be disposed of per local, state, and federal requirements. Additional Information: The Golf Course Superintendent will provide further information on this written program, the Hazard Communication Standards, material safety data sheets, and the hazardous chemicals list to any employee or their designated representative upon request.

6 APPENDIX C PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) PPE is available at all times in the Maintenance Facility. The Golf Course Superintendent and or the Turf Equipment Technician will provide the necessary PPE to complete an assigned task. Below is a list of the available PPE. Safety Glasses Hearing Protection Disposable Rubber Gloves Chemical Resistant Nitrile Gloves Chemical Resistant Disposable Suits Disposable Dust Masks Chemical Respirators This list will be updated when the PPE requirements for any particular task is modified. The purchase of required PPE will be coordinated by one of the afore mentioned supervisor.
