2 2nd Annual Mission Golf Tournament The Bandit Golf Club New Braunfels Texas May 17 th 2015 Welcome to the Mission Golf Tournament! First United Methodist Church in New Braunfels (FUMCNB) is pleased to announce that the 2015 Mission Golf Tournament will be held on Sunday, May 17th, 2015 at The Bandit Golf Club. Tournament proceeds will be used to support the mission and outreach of Casa Hermosa in New Braunfels. Registration information for the golf tournament will be posted on the FUMCNB web site as planning progresses. The event will consist of full access to the Bandit s practice facilities, golfer appreciation bag, scramble format golf tournament, mens and ladies contest holes (closest to the pin and longest drive), 1st 3rd place awards, door prizes, silent auction, and a hamburger dinner.. Building on the success of the 2014 Mission Golf Tournament that raised over $9,000 to support a mission trip to Rwanda, the 2015 event will benefit a specific outreach ministry of the Rio Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church. The Bandit Golf Club will be an ideal setting for the golf tournament. The event organizers are anticipating more golfers than last year s outing that attracted 92 golfers. Event registration and information will be shared with local churches, golfing associations and the New Braunfels Chamber. A Save the Date reminder will be sent to all 2014 participants and sponsors. 3 Our Mission: Serving Christ by inviting the seekers; Equipping the believers; and sending them forth to serve Our History First United Methodist Church New Braunfels was founded in Responding to the call of furthering God s Kingdom, Gruene United Methodist Church was started in It was then Gruene UMC that answered the call to establish Casa Hermosa in south New Braunfels. This area of New Braunfels has some citizens living in less than ideal housing situations. Gruene UMC proposed and received approval to purchase the building from which Casa Hermosa will base its outreach ministry. Today The United Methodist Church utilizes a connectional approach to its organization of outreach and ministry to share God s love for us. First United Methodist Church New Braunfels along with First United Methodist Church Kerrville has been asked to provide funds and awareness for Casa Hermosa. Ministry Concept Casa Hermosa will leverage its location on West Eikel Street to serve a designated area of New Braunfels that FUMC NB and Gruene UMC may not be able reach. This underserved area of New Braunfels is not exclusive to any specific ethnicity or demographic. Casa Hermosa will simply be present for anyone who asks for assistance. This assistance could be in any form in order to give a helping hand. Venue The Bandit Golf Club is located off FM 725 in New Braunfels. The course provides a challenging, 6,928 yard layout with a par of 71 from the longest tees. The course winds in and around Long Creek and Lake McQueeney and makes good use of all the natural hazards these two bodies of water create. Significant elevation changes create spectacular views that lead to the sculpted fairways and perfect greens. The Bandit was named a Top Ten Public Course in Texas by Golfweek Magazine. 3 P a g e

4 Casa Hermosa: A Mission to the People The conceptual idea for Casa Hermosa was pioneered by Pastor Javier Leyva in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas in the early 1980 s. He knew from his experience working in the colonias that the needs of the residents were going unfulfilled through traditional programs and existing community outreach. Pastor Leyva, a quiet, gentle man, believed that a man of God walking the neighborhoods and encountering residents on their own turf might provide a path to understanding individuals needs. Casa Hermosa, located at 1116 Eikel in New Braunfels, is where the walks now start. The mission of each walk is simple and uncomplicated: greet your neighbors, be a friend and discover their needs. The needs uncovered and services offered to meet them are diverse. Tienes necesidad? (Do you have a need)? is the Pastor s call. The responses he hears might range from prayers for a sick child to the need for assistance with planning Quinceaneras. Pastor Leyva provides pastoral care across a wide range of needs including funerals, baptisms, hospital visits, weddings and home or business blessings. Those items make up the short list, only scratching the surface of the things that are possible. The physical facility that is Casa Hermosa clearly reflects the mission of Pastor Javier. Casa Hermosa is housed in a non-intimidating, clean, simple structure with adequate parking located just off busy Walnut Avenue. It looks like a neighborhood home. The building is accessible via an easy walk to and from the neighborhoods nearby. Inside the building is a large, well-lit, multi-purpose area that can be configured for many kinds of activities. The structure has adequate restrooms, showers for males and females, a large functional kitchen and washer/ dryer facilities. Located in the front, facing on the street, is the Pastor s office and library. Simply being there for the needs of your neighbors, coupled with the ability to provide resources to assist them, is a timeless idea. It is similar in many ways to the tradition of padres and missions of our South Texas past. And so it is with Casa Hermosa and Pastor Leyva as he begins his neighborhood walk, looking to meet the people, walk with them on their life journeys, and assist with their needs. 4 P a g e
