2 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP REGULARS TCU has been a mainstay on the NCAA Championship stage under 24th-year head coach Bill Montigel. 4TCU is making its 16th all-time NCAA Championship appearance and its 13th under Montigel s watch. 4The Frogs have been to the national championship three of the last four years. Only 15 schools in this year s field have made it three times in the last four years, including only six who have advanced all four seasons. 4When including individual appearances, TCU has sent at least one golfer to the NCAA Championship 18 times overall, 15 times under Montigel and four of the last five seasons. 4TCU advanced to the NCAA Regional Championship for the 23rd consecutive season this year, all under Montigel. The Frogs are one of only four teams to build a current streak that long under the same head coach along with Clemson, Florida and UNLV. 4TCU s national postseason tournament streak is the longest in the history of Horned Frog Athletics. The women s golf team owns the second-longest streak, having reached 17 consecutive NCAA Regionals. TCU INDIVIDUALS AT NCAA S TCU has seen five golfers earn top-10 individual finishes at the NCAA Championship in its history, including four who placed among the top 5: Year Individual Finish 1980 David Sann T-5th 1992 Charlie Stevens T-10th 1998 J.J. Henry T-2nd 2002 Adam Rubinson T-2nd 2009 Tom Hoge T-3rd DYNAMIC DUO TCU boasts two of the nation s top golfers this season in freshman Julien Brun and senior Johan de Beer. 4Both Frogs are ranked among the nation s top-50 golfers according to Golfweek, with Brun ranking No. 9 and de Beer checking in at No TCU will be one of only 11 teams in the NCAA Championship field with two or more players with top-50 rankings. The other squads are Alabama, Cal, Illinois, North Florida, Oregon, Stanford, Texas, UCLA, USC and Washington. FANTASTIC FRENCH FRESHMAN Freshman Julien Brun has taken college golf by storm this season after arriving at TCU from Antibes, France. 4Brun is among the nation s top-ranked individuals in several ratings systems: Rank No. 2 No. 5 No. 9 College Ratings System Golfstat national ranking Golfstat Cup Golfweek/Sagarin 4Brun also ranks among the world s top amateur golfers: Rank No. 13 No. 17 Amateur Ratings System Scratch Players (No. 1 in France, No. 2 in EU) R&A Amatuer (No. 1 in France, No. 3 in EU) 4Brun was one of 10 semifinalists for the Ben Hogan Award presented to the nation s top golfer. RECORD-BREAKING BRUN Julien Brun is in the midst of completing the top overall season ever by a Horned Frog golfer. 4Not only has Brun set the TCU single-season record for individual victories with three, the figure also broke the program s career record. 4Brun, along with teammate Johan de Beer, is one of only six Frogs ever to win multiple tournament championships in a career. Brun is the only freshman with multiple event wins in a season. 4Providing more evidence of Brun s outstanding season is his season stroke average of 70.53, which ranks No. 6 nationally and is on pace to set a new TCU single-season record: Place Individual (Year) Figure 1. Julien Brun (2012) J.J. Henry (1998) Adam Rubinson (2003) Albert Ochoa (1997) Adam Meyer Adam Meyer Johan de Beer (2012) Bret Guetz (2002) David Schultz (2003) Adam Rubinson (2002) J.J. Henry s school record for stroke average came when he was named Golfweek National Player of the Year. He finished 1998 ranked No. 2 in college golf in average. 4Other single-season records that Brun has reached this season include: score vs. par (-1.06), finish percentage (90.0%) and top-10 finishes (eight). He needs one more below-par round to tie the program s single-season mark for such rounds (27). SENIOR SENSATION Senior Johan de Beer will be in his final competition as a Horned Frog at the NCAA Championship. It will be his third career appearance at the national tournament, as he previously tied for 58th place as a sophomore in 2010 and tied for 89th place as a freshman in De Beer is experiencing his best season yet as a Frog, having reached a career-high individual ranking (currently No. 48 according to Golfweek) while also owning a careerbest stroke average of 71.77, which would rank No. 7 in TCU program history. 4The season stroke average is nearly 1.5 strokes better than his previous best mark (73.12). 4De Beer is one of the most accomplished golfers in TCU history. He became the first four-time all-conference individual in program history earlier this year and is one of only three golfers in Mountain West history to earn four All-MW accolades. 4De Beer became only the sixth Frog with multiple individual tournament titles and only the fifth TCU conference champion when he was top-medalist honors at the Mountain West Championship. 4TCU s leader for much of the spring season, de Beer recorded top-15 finishes in seven consecutive tournaments prior to tying for 31st at the NCAA Central Regional. 4De Beer owns a current career stroke average of 73.02, which ranks No. 5 in program history. JENNEVRET MAKING STRIDES Junior Daniel Jennevret has been a mainstay in the lineup throughout each of his three seasons as a Horned Frog, but this year he has made major strides in improving his game. 4Jennevret owns a season stroke average of 72.97, well below his previous best of recorded as a freshman in Jennevret has improved his consistency this season, notching five top-20 individual finishes in 13 tournaments. He has placed among the lower half of the leaderboard in only two events. 4Jennevret is ranked No. 154 according to Golfweek. He finished No. 211 as a freshman and No. 393 at the conclusion of last season. COMING UP CLUTCH TCU likely would not have advanced to the NCAA Championship without the timely performance of freshman Thomas Mantovanini at the NCAA Central Regional. 4The No. 4 player in the Frogs lineup, Mantovanini had a major breakthrough in Ann Arbor, tying for 11th place with a final 3-under-par score of 210, easily his top effort as a Frog. 4Mantovanini s final score consisted of three rounds of par or better golf at the par-71 University of Michigan Golf Course ( ). Prior to the weekend, he had only shot par or better in two of 18 competition rounds for TCU. 4Mantovanini s previous best score in relation to par was a +3 effort at the Insperity Augusta State Invitational, while his top finish was tying for 36th place out of 87 individuals at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational. 4Bill Montigel called Montavanini s effort one of the most memorable in his 24 seasons as TCU s head coach. It had to be one of the most clutch, unbelievable performances by a freshman that I have seen here, Montigel said. To come up with your best tournament, by far, at this time of the year when the pressure is on was just incredible. BIG 12 BOUND The NCAA Championship will mark TCU s final golf event as a member of the Mountain West before joining the Big 12 Conference on July 1. One other Mountain West squad made the NCAA field in San Diego State, while two other Big 12 members will join TCU at Riviera Golf Club in Texas and Oklahoma. IN THE PROS TCU boasts two different former Frogs who currently possess PGA TOUR cards in J.J. Henry ( ) and J.J. Killeen ( ). 4Henry made headlines last week by tying for third place at the HP Byron Nelson Championship in Dallas. He actually led the field early in the final round after recording a hole-in-one on the par-3 fifth hole. 4Killeen received his tour card for the first time last fall after topping the Nationwide Tour money list last season. He was named Nationwide Player of the Year in a vote of his fellow competitors.

3 BILL MONTIGEL HEAD COACH IDAHO STATE (1976) 24th Season One of the most-decorated coaches in the history of TCU Athletics, Bill Montigel is in his 24th season as head men s golf coach and 33rd year overall as a member of the Horned Frog family. Since becoming the face of Frog golf, Montigel has provided the blueprint for building one of the nation s top collegiate golf programs. Montigel s tenure has been marked by consistent success, highlighted by the program s current 23-year streak of NCAA Regional participation. The Frogs are one of only four NCAA Division I teams to earn a regional bid each of the last 23 years under the same head coach along with Clemson, Florida and UNLV. Only 15 programs have amassed the same streak with numerous head coaches. TCU golf s current postseason run is unparalleled in the history of Horned Frog Athletics. The streak is by far the longest all-time for any Frog squad and six years more than their counterparts from the TCU women s golf team, which currently owns the No. 2 spot in school history with 17 straight regional bids. TCU has not limited its goals simply to reaching the postseason under Montigel s watch. The program has collected eight conference championships in the past 15 years, in addition to appearing in the NCAA Championships 13 times since The 1997 squad, led by former All-American and current PGA Tour pro J.J. Henry, tied for seventh place for the Frogs best-ever national finish. That success was nearly duplicated in 2009, as a thirdplace individual effort by Tom Hoge helped boost the squad to ninth place. Several individuals have flourished under Montigel s watchful eye. Henry and Hoge are among a select group of three former Frogs who have recorded top-3 medals at the NCAA Championships during his tenure. Henry tied for runner-up honors in 1998, while Adam Rubinson duplicated the feat in Henry cemented his TCU legacy in 1998 by becoming the school s first three-time All-American in He capped his illustrious career by being named Golfweek/Taylor Made Co-College Player of the Year. Overall, Montigel has coached 11 different players to 16 All-America honors on the links. The individual success has extended to the conference level, with five players having earned league golfer of the year honors. During one stretch in the early 2000 s, Frogs were named Conference USA Golfer of the Year three straight seasons (J.J. Kileen, Adam Meyer and Rubinson). TCU has made a habit of sending golfers on to professional careers with Montigel at the helm. Henry has made the biggest splash, having been a fixture on the PGA Tour for the last decade. The 2006 season saw Henry finish No. 29 on the Tour s money list, take home the Buick Championship and compete for the United States during both the Ryder Cup and World Cup. Another former pupil, J.J. Killeen earned his Tour card for the first time in 2011 after winning two Nationwide Tour events and finshing the season atop the Tour s money list. Hoge became TCU s newest addition to the professional ranks in 2011, earning an exemption to his first PGA Tour event, the RBC Canadian Open, with a win at the Players Cup in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He made history by becoming the first golfer since the Canadian Tour s inception in 1981 to win a tournament after advancing through the event s qualifying stage. The victory earned Hoge a two-year exemption on the Canadian Tour and currently competes on the Nationwide Tour. Other former Montigel pupils who have gone on to experience success on both the Nationwide Tour and Gateway Tour include Rubinson, Colby Beckstrom, Franklin Corpening, Bret Guetz, Drew Laning, Adam Meyer, James Sacheck, David Shultz, Sal Spallone and Drew Stoltz. Montigel s rise in the collegiate golf ranks has been well-chronicled from a coach who started out with limited exposure to his particular collegiate sport to becoming one of the nation s most successful coaches. While his approach has proven solid, it was his arrival upon the collegiate golf scene that perhaps raised a smattering of eyebrows. Prior to the 1987 campaign, Montigel served eight seasons as an assistant basketball coach and top recruiter at TCU under legendary coach Jim Killingsworth. Several of Montigel s recruiting gems were key performers on the Frogs back-to-back Southwest Conference championship squads in 1986 and One of Montigel s prized recruits was an undersized guard from Hollywood, Calif., named Jamie Dixon, who went on to help lead the Frogs to their back-to-back SWC titles before becoming one of the top minds in all of college basketball as the current head coach at Pittsburgh. When Killingsworth retired at the end of 1987 season, Montigel s career took a dramatically-altered path. The TCU administration had to look no further than the men s basketball office to find its next men s golf coach. As a graduate student at Oklahoma State, it was his friendship with legendary Cowboys golf coach and current OSU Athletics Director Mike Holder that truly kindled his interest in golf. Knowing that he could recruit, MONTIGEL S CAREER HONORS 47-time conference Coach of the Year [SWC (1990); WAC (1997); C-USA (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005); MWC (2009)] 41st NCAA Division I coach in any sport named Coach of the Year in 4 conferences 413 NCAA Championship appearances 423 straight NCAA Regional appearances (1 of only 4 coaches in nation) 48 conference titles [WAC (1997, 1998, 2001); C-USA (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005); MWC (2009)] organize and motivate, Montigel added some of the valuable lessons he learned in basketball and applied them towards building and maintaining a top-ranked golf program. It took Montigel just three seasons to turn a mediocre program into a contender at the conference, regional and national levels. In his first 14 campaigns, TCU captured nine tournaments, an impressive feat considering the lofty competition. The Frogs have taken another step forward in the new millennium, capturing 19 team titles in the last 11 seasons. The squad has added 20 individual tournament titles since 2000, compared to only 16 in the previous 20 years combined. Montigel s ability to develop talent and his teams ability to perform have certainly not gone unnoticed. His peers have voted him conference coach of the year seven times in his career, including four straight years from 2002 through 2005, TCU s four seasons as a member of Conference USA. The honors have placed Montigel in elite company. He is the only coach in any sport to be named coach of the year in four separate NCAA Division I conferences (Southwest Conference, WAC, Conference USA and MWC). In 2002, Montigel was voted into the Horned Frog Classic Hall of Fame and was named TCU Coach of the Year by the Dallas All-Sports Association. In addition to his coaching duties, Montigel remains active on the national level. He serves as a member of the United States Golf Association (USGA) and Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) with past stints as Chairman of the District VI Selection Committee and on the NCAA Men s Golf Committee. Montigel and his wife, Margaret, have two children, Kelli and Thomas. Kelli graduated from TCU in 2010, while Thomas is currently a junior guard playing for the Frog men s basketball team.
