Processing Processed by Kristin Morgan, Collection Description Biographical Note Robert Tyre ("Bobby") Jones ( ), lawyer and golfer, was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Clara Thomas and Robert Permedus Jones. In 1930, Jones won the Open Championship, the Amateur Championship, the U. S. Open, and the U. S. Amateur, an achievement dubbed the Grand Slam of golf; he was the only golfer to have done so. He also won the Sullivan Award for outstanding amateur athlete (1930), founded the Augusta (Ga.) National Golf Club (1931), and organized the Masters Invitational Tournament. Jones attended Georgia Technical Institute where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in He also earned a degree in English Literature from Harvard and attended Emory University Law School, passing the Georgia Bar in He was associated with the Atlanta law firm of Jones, Bird and Howell. Sidney L. Matthew is a Tallahassee, Florida attorney and historian on Bobby Jones. Matthew has written and edited ten books about the Atlanta golfer and penned articles about Jones for Golf, Golf Digest, Links, British Golf Monthly, and British Golf World. Matthew produced an hour- 2

3 long documentary about Jones entitled The Life and Times of Bobby Jones in The show aired on CBS before the Masters Tournament for four years, and the Golf Channel has broadcast it each year since Scope and Content Note The collection consists of Matthew's collection of Bobby Jones related material, audiovisual material related to Matthew's golf film projects, and Matthew's research files and writings. The Bobby Jones collection series consists of materials collected by Sidney L. Matthew relating to Georgia golfer Bobby Jones, including photographs, newspapers, magazines, scrapbooks, correspondence, memorabilia, and audiovisual material. The photographs consist of images of and related to golf and Georgia golfer Bobby Jones from , both originals and reproductions, some undated. Subjects include Bobby Jones, the Jones family, Augusta National Golf Club, the Masters Tournament, St. Andrews Golf Club, the British Amateur Championship, the British Open Championship, the United States Amateur Championship, the United States Open Championship, East Lake Country Club, Watts Gunn, Alexa Stirling, O.B. Keeler, the Walker Cup, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Robert W. Woodruff. Of particular note are original photographs of Bobby Jones and other historical figures in golf, including Harry Vardon and Walter Hagen. The newspapers track the entirety of Bobby Jones' golf career, from his first minor championships in the 1910s to his development of the Masters' Invitational Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in the 1930s. The periodicals include 98 issues of The American Golfer from , which are edited by Grantland Rice, O.B. Keeler, and Bobby Jones himself. Audiovisual series consists of audiovisual material relating to Sidney L. Matthew and his various golf-oriented projects and interests. These include VHS and Betacam SP tapes of The Life and Times of Bobby Jones as it was being edited and audio recordings of the movie's dialogue and voice-over. Also included are research tapes, such as original footage of Bobby Jones playing in tournaments in the 1920s; production tapes of other works; and Matthew's interviews and television appearances. The Matthew series consists of the personal papers of Sidney L. Matthew, including photographs, correspondence, printed material, Matthew's research files on Bobby Jones, and drafts of Matthew's writings. The photographs are of Sidney L. Matthew, the Yates family (prominent Atlanta-area golfers and businessmen with personal ties to Bobby Jones), members of the Golf Collectors Society, and others. Matthew's correspondence is personal, research, and business-oriented, containing personal letters and project details for Matthew's various collaborative philanthropic initiatives. The printed material consists of magazines, newspapers, and other printed material relating to Sidney L. Matthew's publications, projects, and research interests. Also included are Matthew's research files, including correspondence and research notes relating to his written works, films, interviews, and other projects. Of particular note are correspondence with golfers such as Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, research notes concerning Matthew's philanthropic projects with the East Lake Community Foundation, and drafts of Matthew's writings on Bobby Jones and other golfers. 3

Of particular interest is a series of high speed photographs of Jones' golf swing by Harold Edgerton of MIT. These photographs were used by A. G. Spalding & Brothers in conjunction with Jones himself to produce a line of golf clubs in the 1930s.
