2 July 2018 Dear CHSAA 2018 Boys Golf Coach, Please take time to read through this bulletin. It contains all the information you need to plan your regular season of activities and prepare for the postseason play. If you have some ideas for change in CHSAA high school golf, attend the Golf Committee Meeting. You can find that information and the names of the committee members in this bulletin. Reach out to one the committee members if you can t attend to advocate on your behalf. The Golf Committee Rules Changes and Points of Emphases will give you a quick synopsis of the changes made from last year. You can find that information in this bulletin. A calendar of events is also listed in this bulletin along with a table of contents in case you are looking for something specific. Find a scorer in your school or community to accompany your team at your regional tournament. An independent scorer is required of each school participating in a regional tournament to follow a playing group. This person may be a parent. The scorer must enter hole by hole scores in Iwanamaker of the group members he or she follows. If one or more team members qualify for state, information about states sites and procedures is noted in this bulletin. (Please use this template that has been created for consistency). The VEAP must include location, emergency access, emergency contact information and a listing of each member in protocol's duties. An Annual VEAP training must take place no less than one time a year. This plan must be completed for all on-site and off-site practice/competition venues.

Classification - Boys, 3A: 1-676; 4A: ; 5A: 1520 and up. b. Classification - Girls, 3A: 1-869; 4A: ; 5A: 1590 and up. 2. Teams and Individual Qualifiers a. There are 84 state qualifiers for 3A, 4A, and 5A. Each regional tournament will have 2 full teams and 13 individuals not on a team. 5A Boys and Girls Regionals are seeded from league standings. b. The 4 th team qualifier, the highest scoring member of one of the the qualifying teams, must score 10 strokes or less of that of the last individual qualifier not on a team in order to participate at state with their team. If the highest scoring member of the team(s) that qualifies is more than 10 strokes from the last individual qualifier s score, the 4th team member will not participate and will be replaced by the next highest individual not on a team from that regional tournament. A team can compete for team points as a 3-member team.

10 Each 5A regional tournament will be made up of schools placed by their league finish. The deadline for the submission of league finishes is 5 pm the Wednesday prior to the first scheduled regional championship (Sep 12, 2018). Each region will have two (2) automatic team qualifiers and thirteen (13) individuals not on a team. A league or league school is responsible for hosting the regional tournament as noted on the regional template. It is recommended that an intra-league rotation of hosts schools be set-up and filed with the CHSAA Golf Commissioner. *The league hosting rotation is shown below. Each League will develop an individual hosting school rotation. A (odd years), etc. CSML, Continental, Front Range (even years), etc. Centennial, Denver, EMAC B , , etc. Jeffco (two years in succession) , , etc. Southwestern (every three years) REGIONAL TOURNAMENT SITE DIRECTOR AND RULES COMMITTEE Each regional tournament will be under the control and supervision of a site director approved by the CHSAA. The director and his/her committee shall assign players to groups of three or four in order of ability according to average scores as they are listed in Iwanamaker and provide the necessary instructions for coaches and players of local course rules and regulations. Pairings should be available at least 24 hours ahead of the competition. The wave format of pairings is recommended. The director shall appoint a committee to rule on possible infractions and disputes. (It is recommended that two members of this committee should be the local golf professional and the primary CGA official.) The regional tournaments shall be 18 holes. The teams and individuals scoring the lowest totals from each of the six regionals will qualify for the state championship. Any ties for the state qualifying play must be broken through a hole by hole playoff the day of the regional qualifying tournament. Ties for first place (team and individual), for the final team and/or individual qualifying spot, and for the two alternate spots must be broken. If green fees must be charged, the tournament director shall notify all teams in advance of the cost. PLAQUES Plaques are awarded to the first-place and second-place teams in the regional qualifying tournaments. A state qualifying ribbon will be awarded to teams and individuals qualifying to participate in the state championship. AMATEUR STATUS OF HIGH SCHOOL GOLFERS All golfers must comply with the Rules of Amateur Status published by the United States Golf Association (see the USGA Golf Rules booklet). At no time shall a golfer accept cash or cash equivalent. Individuals participating in any interscholastic athletic activity sponsored and/or approved by the CHSAA shall not accept cash or merchandise awards. Awards at these interscholastic athletic activities must be symbolic in nature with no functional or intrinsic value such as, but not limited to, letters, plaques, trophies, medals, ribbons, certificates and letter adornments and shall not exceed $50.00 in value exclusive of engraving. Note: "Cash" includes such things as, but not limited to, remuneration in any form such as cash, money orders, gift certificates, scholarships, free or reduced price meals. "Merchandise" awards include such things as, but not limited to, jackets, sweaters, blazers, windbreakers, jogging suits, blankets, rings, etc. Individuals participating in a non-interscholastic athletic/activity are governed by USGA rules. 11 Students may compete in outside events throughout the high school golf season with permission of the high school principal. Formal golf practice begins on August with the first golf scrimmage and contest allowed on August 11, PARTICIPATION - MAXIMUM HOLES, INDIVIDUAL Each participant may play no more than 198 holes of scheduled golf meets, exclusive of sudden death playoffs, regional and state meets. COACHING/ADVISING Coaching, advising, or disruption of players by spectators and/or parents during competition is not allowed. The penalty is two strokes. The player is responsible for knowing and following the rules of golf. One school contracted varsity coach may coach golfers anytime during the players round except when the player has reached the green to putt. Coach must: Wear the enclosed coach tag. Advise parents and/or other coaches from their school that they may not coach or advise golfers during the tournament. A second coach may have this privilege if registered with the CHSAA. Penalty: disqualification of the coach. SUNDAY CONTACT Regular Season: Page 91 of the Bylaws, Q & A #4. Q4: When May a coach have contact with an athlete on Sunday? A4: (1) Post-season picnics/banquets; (2) public gatherings; (3) travel required by Saturday or Monday competition; (4) attendance by coach/parent at own child s contests; (5) chance encounter; (6) when the coach is acting in the capacity as contest official, umpire, or referee at a competition where an athlete from his/her school team may be competing completely independent from any connection with the coach. Post-season: Page Sunday Contact. No high school interscholastic contests, practices for interscholastic contests, camps, nor association between participants and coaches/directors of any CHSAA sanctioned activity from the students school shall take place on Sunday at any time during the school year. (This is to include both in-season and out-of-season sports/activities other than those noted in the Music Bylaws.) The Commissioner may, when deemed advisable, allow postponed state-level events to be played on Sunday. Teams playing on Monday in district, regional or in a state-culminating event will be exempt from this rule.

NFHS Lightning Policy These guidelines provide a default policy to those responsible or sharing duties for making decisions concerning the suspension and restarting of practices and contests based on the presence of lightning or thunder. The preferred sources from which to request such a policy for your facility would include your state high school activities association and the nearest office of the National Weather Service. PROACTIVE PLANNING 1. Assign staff to monitor local weather conditions before and during practices and contests. 2. Develop an evacuation plan, including identification of appropriate nearby safer areas and determine the amount of time needed to get everyone to a designated safer area: a. A designated safer place is a substantial building with plumbing and wiring where people live or work, such as a school, gymnasium or library. An alternate safer place from the threat of lightning is a fully enclosed (not convertible or soft top) metal car or school bus. 3. Develop criteria for suspension and resumption of play: a. When thunder is heard or lightning is seen*, the leading edge of the thunderstorm is close enough to strike your location with lightning. Suspend play for at least 30 minutes and vacate the outdoor activity to the previously designated safer location immediately. b. 30-minute rule. Once play has been suspended, wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard or lightning is witnessed* prior to resuming play. c. Any subsequent thunder or lightning* after the beginning of the 30-minute count will reset the clock and another 30-minute count should begin. d. When lightning-detection devices or mobile phone apps are available, this technology could be used to assist in making a decision to suspend play if a lightning strike is noted to be within 10 miles of the event location. However, you should never depend on the reliability of these devices and, thus, hearing thunder or seeing lightning* should always take precedence over information from a mobile app or lightning-detection device. * At night, under certain atmospheric conditions, lightning flashes may be seen from distant storms. In these cases, it may be safe to continue an event. If no thunder can be heard and the flashes are low on the horizon, the storm may not pose a threat. Independently verified lightning detection information would help eliminate any uncertainty. 4. Review the lightning safety policy annually with all administrators, coaches and game personnel and train all personnel. 5. Inform student-athletes and their parents of the lightning policy at start of the season.

13 GOLF COMMITTEE POLICIES AND OTHER INFORMATION (BOYS AND GIRLS) A. No more than two CHSAA registered coaches may coach anytime during the players round tee to green. When a player has reached the green to putt, he or she may not be coached. If a coach is not wearing a coach s tag, he or she is deemed a spectator and must not be coaching any player or walking in the fairway. B. Schools that qualify three golfers as individuals to the state tournament may compete as a team, but no substitutions can be made for these golfers because in actuality their status is that of individual qualifiers. C. The CGA and CWGA will provide rules officials for all regional and state tournaments. D. All competitors must wear a golf-type shirt with a collar and sleeves (no sleeves required for girls). A mock-turtle neck shirt can be worn in lieu of a collared shirt. School identification must be on the shirt. E. Competitors may wear tailored shorts or slacks in all events, but they must be of the dress variety. Denim blue jeans, cutoffs, spandex, physical education or running-shorts, or shortshorts will not be allowed. During the regular and postseason, slacks, shorts, or skirts must have a hemline no shorter than the student s fingertips when their arms are down by their side. If the player is not in compliance when checking in for a tee time, the starter can have the player change the illegal attire or be disqualified. Coaches are responsible for their player s attire. F. Golfers may not use caddies or motorized carts. Noisemakers and radios are not allowed. A range finder device may be used for measuring distances. Players may share a range finder device. G. Players will follow the CHSAA Code of Ethics as it relates to the non-use of chemicals, alcohol, tobacco and other mood-altering substances. They will also be expected to follow the highest standards of sporting behavior; gambling, club throwing, and the use of abusive language will not be tolerated. H. Any negative sporting behavior will be dealt with in the following manner during a meet: First Offense - a warning will be given Second Offense - disqualification from the event NOTE: Any act deemed to be flagrant could result in an immediate disqualification. I. An observer, who may be a parent, is required to follow each playing group. The observer is responsible for scoring either by entering them in Iwanamaker or providing them to the site director. J. This is a team competition with a concurrent individual competition. Should a team member incur a penalty of disqualification for breach of the USGA Rules of Golf, the golfer is disqualified from the individual competition but may compete and as a team member. K. Coaching/Giving Advice is allowed on the course as per Item A only. It is the responsibility of players to know the rules and any breech of the rules of giving advice or giving information is subject to loss of stroke. L. Regional tournaments may use the team wave format as an alternative method of pairing golfers. M. The 4th qualifying golfer on a team within 10 strokes of the last qualifying individual golfer is part of team concept advocated by the CHSAA in all its sports and activities. N. Tournament directors are encouraged to contact the CGA to get advice on controlling pace of play. The CGA will help setup the course. Note that coaches are not to collect score cards. O. For regional tournaments the regional host must secure back up dates. P. Players should ensure that any electronic device taken onto the course does not distract other players. The use of an electronic device such as a mobile phone, hand-held computer, calculator, television or radio is not of itself a breach of USGA Rule 14-3 and can be used for: matters unrelated to golf (e.g., to call home); accessing information on advice-related matters produced prior to the start of the player's round (e.g., an electronic yardage book, swing tips); accessing (but not interpreting or processing) playing information from previous rounds (e.g., driving distances, individual club yardages, etc.); obtaining information related to the competition being played (e.g., the leaderboard or projected "cut"). During the stipulated round the penalty is: First offense Warning; Subsequent Offense Disqualification/Removal from the course. Q. "Advice" is any counsel or suggestion that could influence a player in determining his play, the choice of a club or the method of making a stroke. Information on the Rules, distance or matters of public information, such as the position of hazards or the flagstick on the putting green, is not advice. Players on a team are not considered to be partners no matter if they are in a group together or not. So, they can share information but they cannot share advice. The only way to circumvent this is through the coach. Player A can give advice to a coach that can be relayed to Player B but the advice cannot be shared between A and B directly.

17 STATE TOURNAMENT GENERAL INFORMATION USGA RULES Play shall be governed by the Rules of Golf of the United States Golf Association as supplemented by published local rules. PRACTICE ROUNDS It is recommended that host golf sites organize a shot-gun start for practice rounds. Check the CHSAA website for details. NOTE: EACH GOLF COURSE HAS A DRESS CODE FOR GOLFERS PLAYING (BOTH PRACTICE AND COMPETITIVE ROUNDS). NO TEE SHIRTS, DENIM OR OTHER QUESTIONABLE DRESS IS ALLOWED. TOURNAMENT FEES In each tournament a fee will be charged to cover site green fees. The CHSAA will bill schools and make one payment to the course. COURSES OPEN The courses open by 7:30 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday. Players and/or coaches may walk the course each day before the first time, but shall not play or practice on the course itself. (Pin placement sheets will be used.) The local club professional may prohibit anybody from being on the course before the 8:30 a.m. starting time. TEAM REGISTRATION Coaches may register and pick up their team packets containing tee times, participation certificates and bag tags at the coaches meeting on Sunday at 4 PM at the state tournament site. Consult CHSAA website for details on this meeting. TEE TIMES FOR STATE TOURNAMENT Golfers will play in threesomes and will be spaced at nine-minute intervals from both Tee No. 1 and Tee No. 10. The first groups will start between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. The exact starting and tee times will be distributed when qualifiers are known. The CHSAA office will make the pairings and assign tee times for the 1 st round based on team and individual IWR rankings. Players from the same school will not be paired together. The priority will be to pair teams first then individuals. Starting times for the 2 nd round of the state championship will be in a U configuration. On the #1 tee, the lower half of scores will play in order of high to low, beginning at 8:30 a.m. On the #10 tee, the higher half of scores will play in order of low to high, beginning with first tee time. EXAMPLE Tee #1 8:30 78 Tee #10 8: : :45 95 The Tournament Committee may disqualify players missing tee times following a review. (See Note, Rule 6-3 of the USGA rulebook.)

18 Tee times will be put on the CHSAA Golf App and on the CHSAA web site ( as soon as they become available probably by Tuesday prior to the tournament. TUESDAY TEE TIMES Tee times for Tuesday s competition will be available at the Pro Shop at each course as soon as possible after the completion of Monday s competition. Coaches may call the Pro Shop for Tuesday s tee times. Tuesday s tee times will also be posted at the Clubhouse. SUBSTITUTION FOR INDIVIDUAL PLAYER UNABLE TO PARTICIPATE (EXAMPLE) The coach should immediately contact the regional director if one his or her state qualifiers drops out of the tournament. The coach must contact the CHSAA office by 3p on the Wednesday preceding championship Monday, which is the deadline for substitutions. AN ALTERNATE MAY ONLY SUBSTITUTE FOR A QUALIFIER THAT DROPS OUT OF THE ALTERNATE S REGIONAL TOURNAMENT. HOLE BY HOLE PLAYOFF TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURE a. Ties for first place (team and individual) must be broken on the day of the qualifying tournament. b. Following the completion of regulation play the tournament director or designee will conduct a coin flip to determine the grouping of the remaining golfers in the playoff. The tournament committee can determine how the groups are paired for the playoffs. Teams should not be grouped as a single foursome. If there is a team and an individual tie, resolve the team tie first. c. The order of teeing off in each group is determined by the regular "honors" system (i.e., the lowest score on the previous hole, etc.). d. The tie breaking holes will be announced in the event of a tie. e. A hole by hole scoring concept will be used to determine the winner. When 3 people on hole have a better score than 3 opponents, a winner is determined (total score). TROPHY PRESENTATION Individual and team presentations will take place immediately after the committee has checked all results. Ten (10) medals, with top a ten finisher designation, will be presented based on the CGA matching scorecard system. NOTE: First place ties only will be determined through a hole by hole playoff. NO EXPENSE REIMBURSEMENT The CHSAA will not reimburse schools for any expenses related to the tournament. Schools must make their own arrangements. CHSAA INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY The tournament committee will determine suspension of play and USGA rules will prevail.

19 REMINDER Coaching/advising by parents, or observers is not allowed. Walking the course before play each day is permitted; playing and/or practicing on the course on the day of the tournament is not permitted. Spectators should be made aware of the No Advising rule, and should walk to the sides of the players and a considerable distance away from them. They cannot caddie for the players, hold the pin, or help the players in any way. MOTORIZED CARTS Coaches, parents or other observers are not permitted to ride motorized carts at the state tournament unless authorized by CHSAA for specific reasons such as medical and age. 21 GOLF ETIQUETTE SAFETY 1. SWINGING - Prior to playing a stroke or making a practice swing, the player should ensure that no one is standing close by or in a position to be hit by the club, the ball or any stones, pebbles, twigs or the like which may be moved by the stroke or swing. 2. LIGHTNING - If the player believes he is in danger of being struck by lightning, he is permitted to discontinue play and seek shelter (Rule 6-8.) Bad weather of itself (rain, cold, and wind without nearby lightning strikes) is not a sufficient reason for discontinuing play. The time between lightning flash and thunder clap can be used to determine how far away lightning is striking: each five seconds represents one mile. When lightning strikes within two miles it is time to head for shelter. CONSIDERATION OF OTHER PLAYERS 1. Slow Play - in the interest of all, players should play without delay (see PACE OF PLAY, below). 2. The Honor - On the tee, the player who has the honor should be allowed to play before his fellowcompetitor tees his ball; through the green, the player farthest from the hole should be allowed to play first. However, since there is no penalty for playing out of turn in stroke play (unless it is done deliberately to assist a fellow competitor), if the player with the honor is not ready to hit, to improve the pace of play, other players may hit. 3. Distracting another player - No one should move, talk, or stand close to or directly behind the ball or the hole when a player is addressing the ball or making a stroke. 4. Hitting into the group ahead - No player should play until the players in front are out of range. 5. Lost ball - Players searching for a ball should signal the players behind them to pass as soon as it becomes apparent that the ball will not easily be found. They should not search for five minutes before doing so. They should not resume playing until the players following them have passed and are out of range. 6. Leaving the putting green - When the play of a hole has been completed, players should immediately leave the putting green. CARE OF THE COURSE 1. Holes and footprints in bunkers - Before leaving a bunker, a player should carefully fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints made by him.

22 2. Divots; ball markers; spike damage - Through the green, a player should ensure that any turf cut or displaced by him is replaced at once and pressed down. Any damage to the putting green made by a ball should also be carefully repaired. Damage to the putting green caused by golf shoe spikes should be repaired after all players in the group have completed the hole. 3. Damage to greens - Players should ensure that, when laying down a golf bag or the flagstick, no damage is done to the putting green and that they do not damage the hole by standing close to it, in handling the flagstick or in removing the ball from the hole. The flagstick should be properly replaced in the hole before the players leave the putting green. Players should not damage the putting green by leaning on their putters, particularly when removing the ball from the hole. 4. Damage through practice swings - In taking practice swings, players should avoid causing damage to the course, particularly the tees, by removing divots. 5. In summary - LEAVE THE COURSES ON WHICH WE ARE GRACIOUSLY PERMITTED TO PLAY IN BETTER CONDITION THAN YOU FIND THEM. And be sure to thank the club staff and members whenever possible for the privilege of playing their course.

23 PLAYER RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Conditions of the Competition - The player is responsible for knowing the conditions under which the competition is to be played. 2. Time of starting and groups - The player shall start at the time laid down by the Committee and shall remain throughout the round in the group arranged by the Committee unless the Committee authorizes or ratifies a change. If the player arrives at his starting point ready to play within 5 minutes after his starting time, the penalty for failure to start on time is two strokes at the first hole instead of disqualification. 3. Ball - The responsibility for playing the proper ball rests with the player. Each player should put an identification mark on his ball. 4. Recording scores - A marker is an individual, normally a fellow competitor, who is appointed by the Committee to record a competitor s score in stroke play. After each hole the marker should check the score with the competitor and record it. On completion of the round the marker shall sign the card and hand it to the competitor. If more than one marker records the scores, each shall sign for the part for which he is responsible. 5. Penalty strokes - A player who has incurred a penalty stroke should notify his marker of the penalty as soon as practicable. 6. Doubt as to procedure - When a competitor in stroke play during the play of a hole is doubtful of his rights or procedure, he may, without penalty, play a second ball. Before proceeding, he should announce to his marker his decision to play the second ball and his choice of which of the two balls he wishes to count if the Rules permit (Rule 3-3). 7. Signing and returning the card - After completion of the round, the competitor should check his score for each hole and settle any doubtful points with the Committee. He shall ensure that the marker has signed the card, counter sign the card himself and return it to the Committee as soon as possible. 8. Alteration of card; wrong score for hole - No alteration may be made on a card after the competitor has returned it to the Committee. The competitor is responsible for the correctness of the score recorded for each hole. If he returns a score for any hole lower than actually taken, he shall be disqualified. If he returns a score for any hole higher than actually taken, the score as returned shall stand. PACE OF PLAY 1. Undue delay - The player shall play without undue delay. Between completion of a hole and playing from the next teeing ground, the player shall not unduly delay play (Rule 6-7). 2. Maintain position - Your place on the course is immediately behind the group ahead, not immediately ahead of the group behind; keep up with the group in front even if you are not being pushed from behind. 3. Practice swings - Limit practice swings when it s your turn to hit; practice swing only while waiting for the honor. 4. Mental preparation - Think of club selection before reaching the ball; be ready to hit when it s your turn. 5. Continuous putting - Putt out in lieu of marking. In stroke play, a player required to lift his ball may play first rather than lift (Rule 22). 6. Plan ahead - Place golf bags on the side of the green leading to the next tee. 7. Lining up - Line up putts while others are playing, before it s your turn; your first look is probably as good as looking at the putt from four directions. 8. Lost balls - Observe the flight of all player s shots; line up where the ball landed to ease search; play your own second shot before going to help search for a fellow-competitors ball. 9. Provisional - Play a provisional ball when your last shot may be lost (outside a water hazard) or out of bounds. 10. Hit quick - Hit each shot quickly and putt fast - your game will probably improve. You should seldom take over 40 seconds to get a shot off once it is your turn to play.

24 Weather Apps CHSAA LIGHTNING AND TORNADO POLICY AND PROCEDURES It is strongly recommended that an independent and objectively verified weather app (such as the WeatherBug Spark App, Storm by Weather Underground, or the National Weather Service app) be available at all outdoor activities, including practices and contests. This should be part of your venuespecific emergency action plan. Acceptable alternatives to the verified weather apps include but are not limited to: immediate contact with the local weather services, local television or radio. Access to these sources can be through the Internet, cellular telephone and/or any other means that provides the information needed for real time decisions to be made. Proactive Planning for Lightning In your venue-specific emergency action plan, you must: 1. Assign a staff member to monitor local weather conditions before and during practices and contests. This staff member is designated to make the final call on suspending and resuming the game. 2. Develop an evacuation plan, including identification of appropriate nearby safer areas and determine the amount of time needed to get everyone to a designated safer area: a. Utilize announcements/public address announcer to help guide teams and fans to the appropriate shelter and identifying safe places as noted below. b. Safe locations need to be identified and shared with teams, spectators and workers prior to the start of the activity or athletic event. c. A designated safer place is a substantial building with plumbing and wiring where people live or work, such as a school, gymnasium, locker rooms or buses/cars. An alternate safer place from the threat of lightning is a fully enclosed (not convertible or soft top) metal car or school bus. d. Unsafe locations include but are not limited to: Picnic areas, parks, open sided shelters (dugouts), storage sheds, open garages, tents, press boxes, areas close to open water, tall objects such as trees, poles, towers, and elevated areas. 3. When a thunderstorm seems imminent, lightning is seen or heard, or the weather app indicates that lightning is within 8-10 miles, the outdoor venue (small or large) needs to be evacuated. Proceed to a lighting safe area. 4. Activities shall be suspended, and all personnel are directed to move to safe locations. The call to suspend activity due to close lightning should be based on how fast the storm is approaching and the amount of time it will take for event participants to take appropriate safe shelter. At a minimum, by the time the lightning storm has reached 8 miles away from the location of the outdoor activity, all individuals should have left the outdoor athletic site and reached a safe location. Weather monitoring subscriptions should be set at an 8-10 mile radius from the center of the sporting event (venue specific). 5. Criteria for suspension and resumption of play: a. When thunder is heard or lightning is seen*, the leading edge of the thunderstorm is close enough to strike your location with lightning. Suspend play for at least 30 minutes and vacate the outdoor activity to the previously designated safer location immediately. b. 30-minute rule. Once play has been suspended, wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard or lightning is witnessed* prior to resuming play. c. Any subsequent thunder or lightning* after the beginning of the 30-minute count will reset the clock and another 30-minute count should begin. d. When lightning-detection devices or mobile phone apps are available, this technology could be used to assist in making a decision to suspend play if a lightning strike is noted to be within 10

25 miles of the event location. However, you should never depend on the reliability of these devices and, thus, hearing thunder or seeing lightning* should always take precedence over information from a mobile app or lightning-detection device. * PER NFHS At night, under certain atmospheric conditions, lightning flashes may be seen from distant storms. In these cases, it may be safe to continue an event. If no thunder can be heard and the flashes are low on the horizon, the storm may not pose a threat. Independently verified lightning detection information would help eliminate any uncertainty. 6. Review the lightning safety policy annually with all administrators, coaches and game personnel and train all personnel. 7. Inform student-athletes and their parents of the lightning policy at start of the season in your pre-season meeting. No App Available- Use NFHS Guidelines When a weather app is not available, the default NFHS policy that appears in the Rules Book of each sport shall be followed. In brief, that policy requires suspension of all activity when cloud-to-ground lightning is observed, or thunder is heard. If thunder is heard, lightning is assumed to be striking within 10 miles. Implement the Thirty Minute Rule as noted in the NFHS Policy. When activities are suspended, the following individuals shall be responsible for the safety of personnel: The head coach for players and other team personnel. Game management guiding spectators and personnel to safe areas The senior official for the officiating crew. All game management personnel, administrators, coaches and officials must be thoroughly familiar with the NFHS default policy as well as this policy. A Person Struck by Lightning People who have been struck by lightning do not carry an electrical charge and are safe to be touched by others. Call 911 Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is safe for the first responder. If possible, an injured person should be moved to a safer location before starting CPR. Lightning-strike victims with signs of cardiac or respiratory arrest need immediate emergency help. Activate the local emergency management system and utilize an AED if available. Prompt, effective CPR has been highly successful for the survival of lightning strike victims. Tornado Specific EAP Definitions: Tornado Watch - indicates tornadoes are possible Tornado Warning - tornado siren sounds signaling tornado sighted or tornado indicated by radar Emergency Action Plan: Develop a tornado specific EAP for each venue or event. Designated weather watcher (above) notifies site or athletic director of approaching storm and communicates direction and speed of storm. If a tornado warning is initiated, immediate event delay should be implemented, and all participants, spectators and athletic staff should SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY. Once inside a secure location, tune to local weather alert radio to be informed of storm location, path and duration of tornado warning.

26 Warning may be extended, or a new warning issued at any time, so continued monitoring is needed. During tornado warning, sirens will sound for 3 minutes at a time. Depending on duration of warning, sirens may re-sound multiple times. Safe shelter from tornado = inside lowest building level, away from exterior walls/windows, with windows closed. If outside, lie flat in a ditch or depression and cover head with hands or stay in a car with seatbelt on. Be aware of potential flooding. DO NOT take cover under an overpass or bridge. Never try to outrun a tornado in urban or congested areas. Be aware of flying debris. All clear - tornado warning will expire after duration specified by National Weather Service and weather watcher notifies site director that warning has ended and event can resume.
