1 Gateway PGA Junior Newsletter June 2014 Form Sportsmanship Style Page Content 1

2 WELCOME Dear Parents and Juniors, We have had a great yet challenging start to the summer season. With the first event getting rained out and the next couple were VERY wet. Then summer decided to show up with some mid 90 degree heat. I want to thank all for great participation and great pace of play. I just want to say how impressed I am with our junior golfers sportsmanship and competiveness in all of events this year. It is truly a joy to watch the Juniors compete on the course and then come off the course and smile and laugh with their fellow competitor. That to me is what golf is all about. We just completed our very first Tour Division event at Forest Hills Country Club. Congratulations to Michael Kanan and Cordelia Chan for winning the Boys and Girls Divisions. These events are nationally recognized through Junior Golf Scoreboard and by the AJGA. Included with their participation, the players received a Gateway PGA Junior Tour hat. Every Tour player in this event was automatically entered into a drawing for a brand new SeeMore Putter and Cleveland Wedge. The more players we have, the more we can give away, so sign up for your opportunity to snag some great gear, and even better opportunity to advance your golf career. Many other 9 and 18 Hole events are recognized later in the newsletter. One of the things that set our tournaments apart is the summer staff we have at events. You may have met them already but I am pleased to introduce the four interns for the summer season: Dom Carnazzo, Andrea (Andie) Frankiewicz, Mitchell Homb, and RaeChelle(Red) Leiken. Each of these individuals bring a unique dynamic to our tournament program and they are all here to answer any questions you have. In this month s newsletter, I have also included an important policies section. It covers how to withdraw from an event and a few other reminders. These are not all of our policies but the ones that come up the most often. All of our policies can be found in the Member Guide on the website A friendly reminder: many of the tournaments, especially for the next few weeks, are filling Up fast. Make sure to go to gatewaypga.org/jrtour to register for the upcoming schedule. Thank you very much, and we look forward to seeing you on the Gateway Junior Tour. See you on the course! Michael Brown Director of Junior Golf "Golf is about how well you accept, respond to, and score with your misses much more so than it is a game of your perfect shots." -Dr Bob Rotella 2

3 RaeChelle (Red) Leiken My best tournament round is 1 under 71 My favorite part of the gateway series was the fun atmosphere. All the workers were really cool. My favorite course might just be the LPGA International The Hills. I play golf at Western Texas College. I am from Eugene, Oregon originally and then moved to Illinois. I use to play volleyball but decided to go the golf route in college. I am most definitely one of the goofier/weirder people I know. I love getting to know new people! My favorite holiday is 4th of July and my favorite candy bar is a snickers. Also, space jam is the best movie ever. Dom Carnazzo I am from Omaha, Nebraska and currently attend Saint Louis University. I just finished my junior year, and am on pace to graduate in the spring of 2015 with a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Sports Business. In my spare time I enjoy watching and playing all sports, and volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater St. Louis when time permits. I have three siblings, two older brothers and a little sister. My love of sports came from growing up with them and playing as many different sports as possible. Andrea Frankiewicz My name is Andrea Frankiewicz but everyone calls me Andie! I was born on September 19, 1992, to my two awesome parents Dean and Rosa Frankiewicz. I know the question every St. Louison wants to know, is where did you go to high school? Well, I am an alumni of Ursuline Academy, class of 2011! I currently am a Senior at Indiana State University, GO TREES! And also a member of the golf team. I am a fun, spontaneous person with a very creative mind! You can always find me rooting on my home teams. Big shout out to the Cardinals and the Blues. I love who I am and where my future is headed. And I'll leave you with a quote, "The world you desire can be won. It exists, it is real, it is possible, it is yours." -Ayn Rand. Best round: 73 Favorite course: Tapawingo because that was the course I grew up practicing and playing on! Hobbies: Hanging out with family and friends, playing golf, designing, watching Netflix, and listening to a variety of different music. Best memories of junior golf: My favorite memory of Junior Golf was playing in the championship at the end of the summer! Fun Facts: If I was on the show Made on MTV, I would be made into a surfer. I have never been surfing, hopefully one day, but I think it's the coolest thing ever! I love Mexican food, and my favorite TV show is One Tree Hill. Mitchell Homb I am from Dixon, Illinois where I graduated from in I was the 2010 Class 2A State Champion in Illinois. In the Fall I will be a Senior at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville where I play on the golf team. Favorite Golf Course that I have played would be the TPC Deere Run in Silvis, IL. Lowest Round that I have ever shot would be a 63 at Timber Creek in Dixon, IL. Been on the Commissioners Honor Roll Twice in College. One of my Favorite Junior Golf memories would be getting a hole in one on Father s Day when I was 12. 3

13 Ruth Park what a great golf course! The rolling hills and long fairways make for a challenging morning of golf. Every single one of the Mini 9 and Novice 9 junior golfers did great! We talked about pace of play, ready golf, and rules for when you start searching for lost golf balls and are trying to identify them. All of those points helped us meet our overall pace of play goals and wrap up before the next wave of golfers jumped on the golf course. Please remember to ALWAYS implement proper pace of play and be aware of where you are on the golf course and how much time you are taking to play. Congratulations to our medal winners! 17 So the summer season is off to a wet start this year, huh? Technically, we didn t get rained on at Crescent Farms, but my socks were wet and I was a bit chilly! Thank you to all the participants for playing and thank you to the staff at Crescent Farms for hosting us. Our chat about Drop Zones came in handy on holes #4 and #6 remember to use them in the future. PLEASE make sure to arrive at the golf course on time. Each event contains multiple elements all of which are part of the whole, not optional. We provide these activities and discussions to further the ability of our junior golfers so please view these as benefits and respect the rest of the golfers who arrive on time and do the same. Thank you. 22 Creve Coeur offered a little change of pace for the Junior Development Tour tee time starts! There are a couple events with tee time starts instead of shotgun starts on the schedule this summer. These are good practice for the 9 Hole Championship at the end of summer, the 9 Hole Division when juniors move up, and arriving to the golf course and the first tee 10 minutes early. Despite the staggered start, we made sure to include a Rule of the Day mini rules seminar before each group. How to proceed when your golf ball comes to rest on a cart path proved helpful for a few juniors today! Gavin and I are very proud of the pace of play exhibited by all JDT junior golfers today keep it up the rest of the summer! We cannot forget to thank Creve Coeur Golf Course and Tim Brinks for hosting us today what a great afternoon of golf! Congratulations to our medal winners! 23 Typically warming up before athletic activity results in making the body more pliable so you play better; otherwise, it could take several holes or more to achieve such flexibility. In addition, a pre-game routine helps to prevent injuries. Not sure how to approach warming up? It s easy as Following are three steps to effective golf warm-ups: 1) Awareness Be aware that you need to get your body ready to play golf. Start visualizing the golf movement and golf swing in your mind. 2) Movement - As you get to the driving range or first tee, pick up a seven or eight iron, one end of the same club in each hand and move the club in a swinging motion back and forth starting slow with small gestures and then increasing the length of the gesture as you get used to the movement. After you feel your body loosening up, take the handle of the club in both hands, first swinging back and forth in a flat plane starting slowly. Once that feels relaxed, mimic the golf swing starting again, starting slowly and increasing the swing length, as you feel comfortable. Also move your body the opposite way in a swing motion just to add symmetry to your body. As a last stretch take one end of the club in your right hand behind your back at the top of your shoulder and bring your left hand around your waist to grab the other end of the club feeling a stretch in your shoulder and hold for a count of 30. Now reverse that stretch with the left hand on top at your shoulder behind your back and the right hand around your waist to grab the other end of the club. Hold for a count of 30. 3) Hit - Now it is beneficial to hit some balls to get your swing down. Start with the shorter clubs and increase to hitting the longer distance clubs. Hit several balls with four or five clubs; that way you should feel comfortable using all the clubs in your bag. After working your way through these steps, you re ready to play. If you d like to develop greater flexibility and strength for your golf game, contact Optimal Lifestyles, Inc. at Barb or Catherine will be happy to get you moving in the right direction.
