4 What is Show Hunter The characteristics of Show Hunter, its horses and courses and way of riding are very specific. The Show Hunter can be any type of breed of horse that has the quality of movement and jumping ability to be competitive. A Show Hunter is judged on its jumping style, way of going, manners and ability to maintain an even pace over a course of at least eight fences. These are naturally styled fences with simple verticals and oxers and usually appear as pickets, natural rails, brush and small walls. Courses are designed to favour smoothness, accuracy, and a flowing performance. Riders do not walk the course because they know what the distances will be from the course plan which is posted ringside therefore there will be no surprises. The requirements of Show Hunter include not only smooth riding, but as close to total control as possible. The horse should have a certain pace and rhythm to allow it to jump out of its stride and arrive at a perfect spot for each fence, neither too short or, too long. The horse should show excellent jumping form folding its forelegs well, using its body, head and neck in an even jumping arc. It should bend correctly with good manners: without pulling, throwing its head or resisting. It should do this while appearing easy to ride, and the aids should be invisible. Any lengthening or shortening of stride should be so smooth that it is invisible to the eye. **As quoted from ESNZ Show Hunter Information Booklet; with permission from ESNZ About Show Hunter The Show Hunter horse should wear a minimal amount of tack and be well groomed and turned out to a high standard. Judging of a Show Hunter round is a positive procedure emphasising style, manners of the horse and a quiet smooth well balanced way of covering the ground and jumping out of an even stride. The horse should arrive at the centre of each fence with a smooth flowing stride without noticeable adjustments from the rider. The horse s knees should be even, tidy and above the horizontal from elbow to knee. The horse should show a proper bascule head down, neck rounded into loose shoulders (not stiff), with the back following the arc of a well-rounded jump, and the hindquarters tipping generously to follow the same arc with the hind legs trailing tidily behind, moving off from the jump in a kind and steady pace. A slotted Kimblewick may only be used where the reins are not fixed in the rein slots. Double Bridle Stud Guards Not allowed (Use of not allowed equipment will result in a no-score for the performance) Drop or any kind of noseband below the bit Unconventional bits where the primary action of the bit is on the poll, including a leverage action causing downwards poll pressure eg. Butterfly bit, puzzle bit, gags, pessoas or Dutch gags A Kimblewick with the reins used in the slots is considered a fixed rein bit. 6 Frequently Asked Questions Can a child on a full size pony ride in Category A? Category A, B and C classes are all for ponies. If you are a child or an adult on a full size pony, and want to ride in Category A, that is fine with us. Please be aware that the classes are judged on striding, and a full size pony may not get the required strides in on a Category A course, which could affect the scoring. What are the jumping heights per category? The heights are approximate, and the heights give is the maximum in allowed each round. - Category A cm - Category B cm - Category C cm - Hack cm How do I decide what class to enter? As this is an Unregistered Event, we do not put a height restriction on the ponies as SHNZ do any height pony can enter any Category, but a hack must jump in the hack ring. Categories are based on the stride length A is 10ft, B is 10ft6, C is 11ft and Hack is 12ft. So if you have a 14.2 pony that can do tight strides, they can ride in category A, and if you have a little 11hh pony that can really stretch it out they can ride category C. The rider should choose the category that best fits their pony. Each mount may only compete in one category per show day. You may compete in another category in the series, on different days. Please ask us if you have any questions. Contact shows by (tielceyparkshows@xtra.co.nz). Helpful Hints The jumps are not numbered, a course plan is found at the entrance to the ring which will indicate the order and direction in which fences are to be jumped, and the number of strides required between the fences. There are no starting flags or bell, and time is not a competitive factor. Always walk in and out of the arena Do not cut your corners. Ride to the middle of each fence. As you enter the ring your gear is checked by the judge, see allowed and disallowed list. Remember; you and your horse are judged from the moment you enter and until you leave the ring When you enter the ring ride promptly to the judge. Once you are acknowledged, report your name and mounts name. To commence competition pick up a canter and ride to the first fence. You will be marked down if you trot at any time between the jumps A winning show hunter round looks balanced, is always on the correct leg, rhythmical and relaxed. Page 6 of 8
