SALE LOCATION: The sale will take place at the Malson Sale Barn, 3135 Elmore Road, between Fruitland and Parma, Idaho. From I-84, take Exit 3 and go south on Hwy. 95. Turn left (east) onto SW 2nd Ave. Turn right (south) and drive five miles on Elmore Road. From Parma, travel north on Hwy. 95 to Echo Ave. Turn right and drive east to Elmore Road. South 2 miles to the sale barn. LODGING (ONTARIO, OR): Clarion Inn, (541) Sleep Inn, (541) Holiday Inn Express, (541) AIR TRANSPORTATION: The closest commercial airport is Boise International and is 60 miles from the ranch. Upon request, we will meet planes at the airport and furnish transportation to and from the sale site. Private planes may use the Ontario Municipal Airport, which is hard surfaced with a 5,000 ft. runway. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Auction block announcements regarding the cattle selling in this sale take precedence over information listed in this sale book. A supplement sheet will be available sale day with updated information. TERMS & CONDITIONS: Terms of the sale are cash or bankable check on sale day. When making settlement, please leave specific instructions for transfer and shipping. Each animal sold becomes the property of the buyer as soon as it is sold. We will not be responsible for any loss or injury after animals are sold. Insurance will be available at the clerk s table. HERD HEALTH: We have a full vaccination program. Cattle will be ready for shipment on sale day unless further health requirements are needed based on buyer s state. Further testing will be done at seller s cost. Proper health certificates and brand papers will accompany cattle. All animals are free of any known genetic defects. TRICH AND SEMEN TEST: All bulls selling are either virgin bulls or will have passed a negative trich test. All bulls selling will be semen tested and are guaranteed to be fertile. GENERAL INFORMATION: FOOD AND REFRESHMENTS: Coffee, hot chocolate and donuts will be available at the sale site beginning at 8:30 a.m. Lunch is sponsored by Mark Nelson of CHS Nutrition and will be served prior to the sale. FIRST YEAR BREEDING GUARANTEE: All bulls selling for $2,000 or more will be covered 50% by Malson Angus and Herefords if they are injured during their first breeding season. Breeding season is defined as the 90-day period following the first turnout of the bulls. Fifty percent of the value of the injured bull, minus one-half salvage value, will be given as credit in a future sale or toward a replacement bull if one is available. Salvage value, if any, will be split equally between Malson Angus and Herefords and the buyers. All injured bulls must be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Please notify us as soon as possible should injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. All claims must be made by September 1, Example 1: A $5,000 bull is injured and will not heal. A credit of $2,500 minus one-half of any salvage value will be given to the buyer. Example 2: A $2,000 bull is injured and will not heal. A credit of $1,000 minus one-half of any salvage value will be given to the buyer. Example 3: A $1,750 bull is injured and will not heal. No credit is given. Buyer retains all salvage value. RETAINED INTEREST: Malson Angus and Herefords is retaining one-third revenue sharing semen interest in all bulls selling. Buyer will receive full possession and full salvage value on bull(s). DELIVERY & FEEDING: Free delivery within a 250-mile radius of the sale site. All other deliveries will be made at cost. Bulls may be kept at the ranch until April 15, After that date, bulls will be charged $3/head/day for feed until picked up by buyer. Birth Weight (BW) is an indicator of calf weight, with a lower value characterizing lighter birth weight calves. Weaning Weight (WW) is an expression of genetic potential for calf weight at weaning, with a higher value indicating more pounds of weaning growth. Average Daily Gain (ADG) describes an animal s genetic potential for postweaning rate of gain. Directed toward the feedlot period, a higher value indicates more average daily gain. Yearling Weight (YW) describes an animal s potential for postweaning gain measured near one year of age, with a higher value reflecting more total pounds. Residual Feed Intake (RFI) describes an animal s feed intake above or below its predicted need for maintenance and growth. Lower scores indicate less intake. Dry Matter Intake (DMI) is an expression of feed intake on a dry matter basis. A higher value characterizes more feed consumed by the animal, while a lower value indicates the animal has potential to eat less feed. Yearling Height (YH) characterizes an animal s genetic potential for height or frame, with a higher value indicating more yearling size measured at the hip. Scrotal (SC) characterizes an animal s genetic potential for scrotal circumference, with a higher value indicating more yearling scrotal size. Docility (DOC) is the animal s genetic potential to be extremely calm, or to have calm offspring. Higher values indicate an improvement in cattle temperament. Heifer Pregnancy (HP) is used as a tool to increase the chance of a sire s daughters becoming pregnant during a normal breeding season. Higher scores are considered more favorable. Maternal Calving Ease (CEM) characterizes an animal s genetic potential for unassisted births in first-calf daughters. A higher value would indicate more favorable genetics for the ease with which daughters calve as first-calf heifers. Maternal Milk (MILK) is an indicator of milk and mothering ability as expressed in daughters. A higher value characterizes more milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight in a daughter s calves. Mature Weight (MW) is an expression of genetic potential for mature cow weight at six years of age, with a higher value indicating larger cow size in pounds. Mature Height (MH) characterizes the genetic potential for mature cow height at six years of age, with a higher value indicating larger cow size in frame or height at the hips. Carcass Weight (CW) is a genetic predictor of hot carcass weight as measured at harvest time. A higher value characterizes more pounds expressed. Marbling (MARB) is an expression of the potential to improve the USDA marbling score, which is used to predict Quality Grade in beef cattle. A higher value indicates a higher marbling score. Ribeye Area (RE) is a predictor of ribeye area in a carcass of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. A higher value indicates a larger ribeye area. Fat Thickness (FAT) is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness as measured between the 12th and 13th carcass ribs. Lower scores indicate less external fat. Tenderness (TEND) represents the genetic potential for tenderness as measured by the Warner Bratzler shear force test, with the higher profile scores being more tender than lower scores. How to use genomic-enhanced EPDs for Angus Genomic-enhanced EPDs are to be used in the exact same way other EPDs are used, as a comparison between animals. These EPDs include all available records, including ultrasound, carcass, and genomic profile results. As data is added to an animal s record, the EPD is expected to change to reflect the animal s true genetic merit. Accuracy values associated with the EPD are the best indicator of the possible amount of change expected in the EPD and will increase as more information is added. DNA Profile Scores EPDs may not be currently available for all traits. Genomic results on animals are accompanied by categorical rankings, or Profile Scores. The profile scores from the IGENITY profile for Angus are reported on a scale from 1 to 10 to assist producers in understanding the relative value of an animal s genetic potential based on DNA analysis. Profile scores do not predict actual phenotypes. Higher scores reflect that the animal has more genetic potential for that particular trait based on the combination of DNA markers analyzed. The higher scores do not necessarily indicate that it is the most desirable. 3

15 American Angus Association Selection Tools Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an I, and may or may not include the animal s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. Accuracy (ACC), is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis. GROWTH Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in firstcalf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. $VALUE INDEXES $Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. Quality Grade ($QG) represents the quality grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $QG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving quality grade. The carcass marbling (Marb) EPD, which is influenced by carcass marbling scores and ultrasound percent intramuscular fat (% IMF) measurements, contribute to $QG. Yield Grade ($YG) $YG represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thickness and weight into an economic value for red meat yield. $G combines both $QG and $YG, and may be the best carcass decision tool for focusing on quality and red meat yield simultaneously. Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. 02/12
