2 TYPES OF SPORTS WAGERS SPORTS BETTING TERMINOLOGY ALTERNATIVE LINE also known as Teasers and Pleasers. A teaser is a wager in which a team(s) are bet, but the bettor adjusts the spreads for less favorable odds. A pleaser is the opposite, where as the bettor wants to make a more difficult spread for more favorable odds. FUTURES ( Outright or Place ) betting is where it is possible to choose from a list of alternatives and bet on the eventuality that a participant wins or places within a specified position in the classification of the listed event/competition. IN-GAME WAGERING is a service offered by books in which bettors can place multiple bets in real time, as the game is occurring. MONEYLINE (to win) is where it is possible to bet on the (partial or definite) outcome of a game or event, i.e. who will win. SPREAD BETTING (points spread in football and basketball, runline in baseball, puckline in hockey or handicap ) is where it is possible to bet on whether the chosen outcome will be victorious once the listed spread/line is added/subtracted (as applicable) to the game/period/total score to which the bet refers to. In those circumstances where the result after the adjustment of the spread/line is exactly equal to the betting line, then all bets on this offer will be declared void and wagers refunded. OVER/UNDER (aka Totals) is where it is possible to bet on the (partial or definite) amount of a redefined occurrence (e.g. points, runs, goals). Should the total amount of the listed occurrences be exactly equal to the betting line, then all bets on this offer will be declared void and wagers refunded. ATS ( AGAINST THE [POINT] SPREAD ): If a team is 5 2 ATS, it means it has a 5 2 record against the point spread, or more commonly referred to simply as the spread. COVER: The betting result on a point-spread wager. For a favorite to cover, it has to win by more than the spread an underdog covers by winning outright or losing by less than the spread. FAVORITE: The expected straight-up winner in a game or event. MONEYLINE: A bet in which your team only needs to win. The point spread is replaced by odds. PARLAY: A wager in which multiple teams are bet, either against the spread or on the moneyline. PUSH: When the result of the game lands on the spread. The bettor does not win or lose and the bettor gets their money back. 7 HOW TO BET TEAM SPORTS BOXING/MMA MONEYLINE The moneyline is used to display the odds of winning in boxing and MMA. The minus (-) on the wagering sheets and display boards indicates the favorite. The plus (+) indicates the underdog. For example, Floyd Mayweather is favored, and the player must lay 180 to win 100. Canelo Álvarez is the underdog, and the player must bet 100 to win 110. HOCKEY MONEYLINE Betting on the moneyline in hockey is the standard option for those not wanting to bet the game against the spread known as the puckline in hockey. For example, Philadelphia (-130) is hosting New York (+110), meaning a 130 wager on Philadelphia would win 100 and a 100 wager on the underdog New York would win 110. PUCKLINE The puckline in hockey is identical to baseball s runline with one team favored by 1.5 goals and the other entering as 1.5 goal underdog. Using the same example, Philadelphia -1.5 (+150) is hosting New York +1.5 (-175), meaning a 100 wager on Philadelphia would pay 150 if Philadelphia wins by 2 or more goals and a 175 wager on New York would pay 100 if they win outright or lose by 1 goal. BASKETBALL Similar to football, basketball betting is against the point spread or the total. The odds are 11 to 10 on straight bets. Cleveland Dallas For example, Dallas is favored by 2.5 points. Dallas must win the game by 2.5 points or more for a player to win their bet. If the player bets Cleveland (+2.5), they must win the game outright or lose by 2.5 points or less for the player to win. The number 205 in this example is the over/under. The player can wager that the final score will be more or less than this number. If the total score is 205, the bet is a push. FOOTBALL MONEYLINE Bettors wishing to bet on which team is going to win a football contest can bet on the moneyline. For example, New York (+140) visits Philadelphia (-160), meaning a 100 winning bet on the underdog New York would net 140, where a 160 winning bet on the favored Philadelphia would pay 100. POINT SPREAD Football bettors can also bet on the point spread. New York is a +3.0 underdog against Philadelphia at In this example, bettors that take Philadelphia would need them to win by 4 or more points and bettors that wager on New York would need them to win outright or lose by 1 or 2 points. If Philadelphia wins by 3 points or if New York loses by 3 points, the game would be a push. OVER/UNDER Football games also feature a point total where bettors can wager whether the total number of points scored in the game will go over or under a defined amount. 8 HOW TO BET TEAM SPORTS SOCCER MONEYLINE The 3-way moneyline is one betting option in soccer that includes the Draw (or tie) as a possible outcome with set odds. For example, France (-129), Draw (+250) and Switzerland (+325) is a 3-way moneyline indicating a 129 wager is needed on France to win 100, a 100 bet is needed on Switzerland to win 325, and a 100 wager is needed on the Draw to win 250. As in other sports, moneyline odds represent the most popular means of wagering on soccer; however, the game s unique rules and design present a few variations on the traditional moneyline. Standard soccer bets are based on results after 90 minutes of play plus any added time for injuries/ stoppages. This is known as regular time. Overtime, golden goals and penalty shoot-outs do not count towards this betting. The 2-way moneyline, also known as Draw, No Bet, eliminates the draw as an available outcome while betting and involves simply selecting a victor. If the match ends in a draw, it is deemed no-action and the wager is refunded. GOAL LINES Betting the spread in soccer is known as betting goal lines and is similar to pucklines in hockey and runlines in baseball. For example, France may enter the match with Switzerland as a 2.5 goal favorite with a line like France -2.5 (+110), Switzerland +2.5 (-120). This means France must win by 3 or more goals in order to receive 110 on a 100 wager or Switzerland must win outright, draw or lose by 2 or less goals to receive 100 on a 120 wager. TOTALS Totals betting in soccer is typically shown in multiples of.5 and the standard metric for soccer is over or under 2.5 goals. BASEBALL MONEYLINE Betting on the moneyline in baseball is as simple as picking an outright winner. However, keep in mind that wagers on the moneyline favorite will naturally pay less than a winning wager on an underdog. For example, Philadelphia (-200) is hosting New York (+170). This line means that Philadelphia is favored and a wager on them in this game will cost 200 to win 100. A winning wager on the underdog New York would result in a 170 win with just a 100 initial stake. OVER/UNDER Betting on totals in baseball allows you to wager on the total number of runs that will be scored by both teams in a game. Moneyline odds are attached to the line, for example: Over Under This example sets the total at 5.5 runs but the under is favored at -110, meaning a 110 wager is needed to win 100 in the event 5 or less runs are scored in the game. RUNLINE Betting on the runline in baseball typically involves a 1.5 run spread on a game. For example: Philadelphia New York In this example, if you bet on Philadelphia and they win by less than 1.5 runs, the wager would still be lost. If they win by 2 or more runs, then the wager will be won. FUTURES Betting futures in baseball involves wagering on future outcomes during the off-season, regular season, pennant races and the postseason.
