1 STEWARDS REPORT Illawarra Turf Club KEMBLA GRANGE RACECOURSE Saturday 10 September 2011 Weather: Track: Rail: Fine Dead (4); Good (3) at 1.20 p.m. Normal STEWARDS: J. D. Walshe (Chairman), C. P. Yeo, T. P. Moxon and Cadet J. Adams. (sp) RIDING CHANGES: As S. Pollard was injured in a fall in Race 6, Stewards permitted the following rider substitutions: Race 7 Race 8 J. Grisedale on Bold n Ready. T. Jones on Steerage. RACE 1: Ladies Day Maiden Plate 2000m: Slippery Eel was slow to begin. When questioned regarding the performance of The Big Boy Sings, App. B. Vassallo stated that the gelding travelled comfortably throughout the early and middle stages, however, did not respond to his riding in the straight and was disappointing. He added that in his opinion his mount, which had got its tongue over the bit during its preliminary, which was rectified upon arrival at the start, may have got its tongue over the bit again during the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed The Big Boy Sings to have minor lacerations beneath its tongue. RACE 2: Lake Times 4YOs and Upward Maiden Handicap 1400m: Kim Warrior began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with Go Dever. Calabria Boy was slow to begin. After the 1000m Calabria Boy commenced to overrace and when awkward on the heels of Without Bias shifted out resulting in Kim Warrior being taken wider for some distance in the middle stages. Rounding the home turn Tohaveandtohold, which was attempting to improve into a narrow run between Go Dever and Escabeau, was disappointed for that run on straightening when Escabeau shifted out slightly. Tohaveandtohold then had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the straight. Passing the 300m Escabeau laid in away from Go Dever and, in so doing, made contact with She s A Silvertail. Tohaveandtohold was inclined to lay in under pressure over the final 200 metres. B. Wood (Without Bias) was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using his whip on six occasions in a forehand fashion prior to the 100m, one more than is permitted under the rule. B. Wood was further reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(i) in that he also used his whip on two consecutive occasions prior to the 100m. When questioned regarding the performance of She s A Silvertail, App. S. Clipperton stated that in his opinion the mare was not advantaged when Escabeau improved to his outside in the middle stages of the event. He further added that his mount was

2 K GR 2 disappointing in its failure to respond to his riding in the straight. App. S. Clipperton indicated that in his opinion She s A Silvertail was better suited when being able to dictate terms in the lead. A post-race veterinary examination of She s A Silvertail did not reveal any abnormality. Following this event the track was upgraded to Good (3) at 1.20 p.m. RACE 3: Illawarra Toyota 3YO Maiden Handicap 1400m: Stewards considered an objection lodged by B. Pengelly, the rider of 3 rd placegetter Accretive, against 2 nd placed Raw Attitude, alleging interference over the final 200 metres. On the evidence it was established that passing the 150m Raw Attitude shifted out and brushed Accretive, however, thereafter both runners shifted out of their own accord. As Stewards were of the view that the minor degree of interference had no material effect on the outcome of the event, the objection was dismissed and correct weight was declared on the judge s placings. Mr M. Virk, representing trainer Mr D. Payne, was fined the sum of $100 for presenting Eagle s Reach without a nose roll, part of the filly s approved gear. When no replacement nose roll could be located, Stewards permitted the filly to race without that gear and public announcements were made to that effect. Mr Virk was informed that a warning would be recorded against Eagle s Reach, which proved difficult to load. On jumping, Caesar s Princess shifted out and made contact with Lovetheoneyourwith. Now I See and Dragonzone came together on jumping. Eagle s Reach was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, Raw Attitude laid out taking Champagne Royal out on to Accretive, which had to be restrained from the heels of Power Broker. N. Paine (Champagne Royal) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that approaching the 1100m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of How True, which was inclined to overrace, resulting in that runner being taken in across the running of Sheza Viking, which had to be restrained and lost its position when crowded in on to Double Fantasy. N. Paine s licence to ride was suspended for a period to commence on Monday 12 September 2011 and to expire on Monday 19 September 2011, on which day he may ride. After the 1000m How True shifted in marginally behind the heels of Power Broker and shortly after, when awkwardly positioned on the heels of that runner, which was being eased, had to be checked when tightened by Champagne Royal (N. Paine), which shifted in marginally. In the incident Double Fantasy, which was following, had to be checked. Alta Floresta, which was following, had to be checked from the heels of Double Fantasy resulting in Dragonzone and Accretive being hampered and having to be restrained. In the incident Accretive shifted out resulting in Lovetheoneyourwith having to be restrained when crowded for room between that runner and Roussos Destiny. In all the circumstances, N. Paine was advised to exercise more care. When questioned regarding the performance of Lovetheoneyourwith, App. B. Vassallo stated that, with the blinkers on today, he had been instructed to take up a forward position, however, his mount was slow to begin and never travelled in the early stages of the event. He added that after suffering interference after the 1000m, Lovetheoneyourwith did not travel well, failed to run on in the straight and, in his opinion, was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of Lovetheoneyourwith did not reveal any abnormality. When questioned regarding the performance of How True, M. Lister stated that he was instructed to obtain cover on his mount, however, How True was inclined to overrace in the early and middle stages and, despite suffering interference approaching the 1100m and again after the 1000m, was disappointing in that it failed to respond to his riding passing the

3 K GR 3 600m and weakened in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of How True did not reveal any abnormality. RACE 4: Monster Brew Haus Benchmark 70 Handicap 1300m: Relentless Lad and Turf Hero were slow to begin. On jumping, Minnisaw shifted out and made contact with Gold Tea, which in turn was taken out on to Hierarchy. Minnisaw was inclined to lay in in the straight. M. Newnham (Power Broker) was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip in a forehand fashion on six occasions prior to the 100m, one more than is permitted under the rule. A post-race veterinary examination of Turf Hero, which weakened over the final 100 metres, revealed no abnormality. RACE 5: Wave FM Class 1 Handicap 1000m: Bermondsey, which was a little fractious in the barriers, was examined by the Club s veterinary officer and passed fit to start. Dance Up A Storm knuckled on jumping. Maximian bounded on jumping and lost ground. Bermondsey was crowded shortly after the start between Gunners Babe, which was taken in by Not A Dancer, and El Of A Time, which jumped out at the start. On straightening, Bermondsey had to be restrained when disappointed for a run between Big Nell and El Of A Time, which shifted out. El Of A Time hung in in the straight and proved somewhat difficult to ride, and when the mare continued to hang in, it was not able to be placed under full pressure over the final 100 metres. When questioned regarding the performance of Not A Dancer, B. Ward stated that he was able to go forward and obtain the lead without unduly pressuring his mount. He added that Not A Dancer travelled well to the home turn, however, did not respond to his riding in the straight and in his opinion was most disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of Not A Dancer revealed the filly to have a poor recovery rate. Trainer Mr M. Dale could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance, however, undertook to report any condition which may become apparent in the days subsequent. RACE 6: Koonawarra Meats Benchmark 60 Handicap 1200m: Chillypin was slow to begin. Setgo had to be steadied when crowded shortly after the start. An inquiry was adjourned into the reasons for Gardner s Pride (S. Pollard) and Setgo being crowded on jumping, and Setgo being checked, and S. Pollard being dislodged shortly after the start, to enable S. Pollard to be present. In the fall, S. Pollard sustained injury to his right wrist and was transported to hospital for medical attention. Over the concluding stages, the riderless Gardner s Pride shifted out resulting in Vi s Intervention having to be restrained. RACE 7: Coca-Cola Amatil Maiden Plate 1200m: The start of this event was delayed to accommodate the transportation of S. Pollard by ambulance to hospital. Wozza was a late withdrawal at 10 a.m. on veterinary advice when found to have a nasal discharge. Stewards permitted App. B. Vassallo to be substituted as the rider of Pretty Baby when App. A. King was injured during a trackwork mishap this morning. Pretty Baby, Relinquish and Rustle were slow to begin. Bold n Ready was crowded on jumping between Monitor, which was taken out by Big Vee, and Polar Eclipse, which knuckled on jumping and shifted in. For some distance after the 1000m Master Of Darkness was inclined to overrace. For some distance passing the 800m Relinquish got its head up and raced ungenerously. Startling pulled hard for some distance in the middle stages. Passing

4 K GR 4 the 700m Big Vee, which was pulling hard, was restrained from the heels of Bold n Ready, which shifted in when not quite clear. After the 700m Pretty Baby pulled its way up between Master Of Darkness and Rise Against and in so doing made contact with the hindquarter of Rise Against, which became unbalanced. In the incident Pretty Baby was hampered and lost ground. Passing the 400m Mosso Arioso laid in despite the efforts of its rider and made contact with Master Of Darkness. Rustle was held up in the early part of the straight and was unable to obtain clear running until after the 300m. Relinquish was inclined to lay out in the straight. J. Lee (Departed) was reprimanded under AR137(a) for permitting his mount to shift out passing the 300m when not quite clear of Bold n Ready, which was commencing to weaken, resulting in that runner being restrained and taken out on to Big Vee, which was crowded between Bold n Ready and Master Of Darkness. RACE 8: Nutrimetics Class 1 Handicap 1600m: Institute, which momentarily got its near hind leg over the partition, was examined by the Club s veterinary officer and passed fit to start. Institute began awkwardly and, shortly after, was hampered when Ridotto shifted in. On straightening Glucksburg, which was inclined to lay in, was disappointed for a run between Ridotto and Mariusz. Glucksburg was then inclined to hang in in the straight. When questioned regarding the performance of Toby, P. Wells stated that he took up a rearward position in accordance with his instructions, however, Toby did not respond to his riding throughout the early and middle stages, failed to run on in the straight and, in his opinion, was disappointing. Trainer Mr L. Bridge could offer no tangible explanation for the performance and was disappointed by today s run. He indicated that Toby would now be spelled, however, undertook to report the results of a full veterinary examination. A post-race veterinary examination of Toby did not reveal any abnormality. When questioned regarding the performance of Institute, App. L. Wray stated that her mount did not travel with her at any stage throughout the event and felt awkward in its action in the straight, and for this reason was not fully tested. A post-race veterinary examination of Institute did not reveal any abnormality. Mr N. Wales, representing co-trainers Ms A. Turner and Mr M. Poletti, was advised that in light of today s performance Institute would be required to perform satisfactorily in an official trial prior to its next start in a race. Mr Wales reported that in a telephone conversation Ms Turner had indicated that she would experiment with blinkers prior to resuming. G. Scimone (Ridotto) and T. Jones (Steerage) will be interviewed regarding the use of their whips in the straight. GENERAL: Swab samples were taken from all winners and the following runners: Race 1: Slippery Eel, The Big Boy Sings, Yates Road Race 3: How True Race 8: Steerage Fines: Reprimands: SUMMARY Race 3: Mr M.
