They came from the Ralph Smith Dispersal in Missouri. A year later the true foundation cows came from the Essar Ranch at San Antonio, TX. These Essar cows were Earl Marshall bred and larger framed and were very productive. We do appreciate all of you attending our sale and for all of your support over the years. We continue to be diligent in our goal of producing and offering balanced trait, superior quality Angus genetics. With balanced trait genetics our cattle are able to perform and excel at a very high level in all the economically important traits. It has always been important to us that our cows be able to raise a big calf on grass and momma s milk and do it on their own. So, we don t use creep feed here at Hinkson Angus. We feel we are offering you another outstanding set of bulls for your appraisal. This set of bulls exhibit excellent performance with a very balanced profile of s. Our balanced trait approach to breeding cattle still allows explosive growth with low birth weights, strong carcass traits, and good docility. We also stress the convenience traits of udder quality, fleshing ability and soundness of feet and legs that are not measured with s. The females in the sale are again a top quality group of Fall bred heifers. This group includes some of our home raised heifers along with heifers sired by our bulls purchased from local ranches. They are pasture bred to good low birth weight sons ofhinksons Sandhill T499. We try hard to support our bull and female buyers by sponsoring an annual Influence calf sale in Emporia. We continue to bid and buy a large number of the heifers each year. Many of these heifers we breed and resale as replacements, but we also graze and feed-out a large number of cattle from our customers to see how they perform and grade. We are strongly involved in every aspect of the cattle industry besides being a seed stock supplier. All the cattle will again be sold by a live auctioneer off the video on sale day. The cattle will be penned as usual for your visual evaluation, but will not go through the sale ring. The sale order will be the same as they are listed in the catalog. All bulls selling for $2,500 or more are guaranteed against breeding injury for the first breeding season. Breeding season is defined as the 90-day period following the first turnout of the bulls. If a replacement bull is available, he will be provided; or if the buyer prefers, credit will be given toward a bull at the following year s sale, less salvage value of the injured bull. Salvage value will be valued at $1,500 and Hinkson Angus will provide credit on any amount over that. The buyer will receive whatever the actual salvage value is. This will be preceded by an I, and may or may not include the animal s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. Growth Calving Ease Direct (), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Weight (), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight (), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Fat Thickness (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Percent Retail Product (%RP), is a predictor of the difference in pounds of salable retail product of a given sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Accuracy (ACC), is the reliability that can be placed on the. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis. $Value Indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Maternal Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Maternal (), is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Mature Weight (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires. Mature Height (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire s daughters compared to daughters of other sires. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars are saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy cost associated with differences in mature cow size. Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized. Ultrasound Intramuscular Fat (%IMF), is a predictor of the difference in a sire s progeny for percent intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle compared to other sires. Ribeye Area (RE), is a predictor of the difference in square inches of ultrasound ribeye area of a sire s progeny compared to the progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness (FAT), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in ultrasound fat thickness at the 12th rib of a sire s progeny compared to the progeny of other sires. It includes the weighted average of 60% of the rib fat measurement and 40% of the rump fat measurement. Percent Retail Product (%RP), is a predictor of the difference in pounds of salable retail product as derived from ultrasound measures of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. $Value Indexes Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. HINKSON REFERENCE SIRES Hinksons Sandhills T499 Connealy Black Granite Fall Bulls Lots 1-59 The fall bulls were weaned the middle of July and ran in native pasture until the middle of October. They were supplemented with 2 pounds of 20% all natural range cubes per day during that 90 day time period. Since then the bulls have been in a 160 acre grass trap. They were fed a high roughage ration with ground hay, distillers grain, silage, and very little added corn for energy. We believe in growing and developing these older fall bulls slowly and not pushing them too hard. This will help the soundness and longevity of the bulls. No creep feed is ever used. The fall bulls will have lower weaning and yearling weights for the most part than the spring bulls due to growing up outside the main grass season. These bulls have the genetics to easily weigh pounds by sale day yet most of the bulls will be in the range. They are hard, athletic and ready to work. If you are looking for fat, fluffy, soft bulls then we can point you in the right direction but remember it s more important how they look coming out of breeding season than going in. 25 70 HEAD FALL COMMERCIAL BRED HEIFERS The heifers selling are sired by Hinkson bulls. Most of the heifers were purchased locally by private treaty. The home raised heifers are eligible to be registered as well. The heifers have been limit fed on a growing ration since November. These heifers are easy to handle and are not carrying any excess flesh. They have endured quite a winter with plenty of mud, ice and snow. Their feet have been put to the test this winter on the frozen ground and we guarantee them 100%. Pre-breeding vaccinations of Breed Back 10, 7-Way Pinkeye as well as being poured with Ivomec twice. A Guardian shot will be given March 10 at preg check. The heifers are natural bred to sons of Hinksons Sandhills T499. 26 THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING For the past three years the majority of the bulls selling in the sale will have been DNA tested. The reason for this genomic testing has been two fold in our program: 1. It is another ingrediant in the recipe that brings us each bull s s. Therefore adding accuracy and reliability to these numbers. 2. Curiosity on our part to see if 50 years of data from performance testing, which we know to be true, would match or be close to what DNA tells us. DNA testing has not been done on our part to make an additional buck, or to be able to advertise (GE) genomic enhanced bulls or because everyone else is doing it. In the attempt to limit any surprises on the customer end after the bull is purchased and used, we have had a few surprises ourselves when the DNA results came back. Understand, we are not opposed to surprises. They are good to keep you alert and on your toes. We do, however, take a bit of an issue in just how much these surprises weigh in on the resulting s, both negatively and positively. Yes, the DNA should have an impact on the numbers. No, they should not outweigh 60 years of proven cow families and individual performance data. All of which has proven itself to be true over time. Whatever genomics says they are is what they are, and no amount of actual performance data taken on the animal will do much to prove otherwise, unless they have several hundred progeny recorded. With this in mind, we have included information in a few footnotes when the genomic s vary wildly with the non-genomic performance data so you can compare and contrast. Please give us your feedback on this issue. DNA testing in cattle is here to stay and we 100% support the use of it. You will not find us, however, turning donor cows into recip cows or recip cows into donor cows because of it. Nor are we taking a middle of the road performance bull and turning him into Lot 1 because he had crazy genomics. Like we stated before, it is another ingredient into the recipe. Let s just start adding a tablespoon of it instead of 3½ cups! As the database grows for DNA, hopefully it will line up more closely to the decades of phenotypic data already compiled. With all this afore mentioned technology these days sometimes it s nice to go back and double check that the cattle are performing in a real-world feedlot environment. It s always nice to look at some good old-fashioned kill data out of the feedlot. Just for old-time sake I suppose! This past year exactly 200 heifers all stemming from Hinkson genetics were fed out. They were fed here locally with Palenske Feed Yard in Strong City. Most of these heifers were purchased in the Hinkson Influence Calf Sale held in Emporia each year, and went into the feedlot right off the cow. A small handfull were actually home raised heifers. We were very pleased with the outcome in the feedlot. Average days on feed: 138 days Average daily gain: 3.82 lbs./day Graded Prime: 14% Graded choice or better: 96% Dry matter conversion: 6.61 lbs./lb. of gain Ironically, while we certainly don t ignore or overlook carcass traits such as marbling, ribeye, fat, carcass weight and $B, they are not do or die numbers for us. We refuse to let the word terminal enter into our Angus vocabulary. We want the complete package. For years we have stressed a combination of balanced traits from birth weight to maternal to growth to end product. The heifer mates that were bred came back with a 94% bred rate!
