1 Waller weekly news 29 December 2016 This week we celebrated a win from a regally-bred filly who we believe has considerable talent in Axiomatic. Thankfully ending our Christmas dry spell, she s an exciting filly headed towards some autumn riches for connections. Across the ditch back in New Zealand it was great to see former Chris Waller Racing scholarship winner Alysha Collett score her first win at Group One level in the Zabeel Classic at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Like her brother Jason, Alysha extended her stay in Sydney while with us and got to know plenty of our owners who we know will join us in congratulating her on this great milestone thanks to a well-judged ride on Consensus. Meanwhile this week in our staff interview we catch up with the latest recipent of the apprentice scholarship Lee Magorrian who is currently soaking up as much information as possible with the stable while on loan from New Zealand. We hope everyone has had an enjoyable Christmas and are set for more fun and frivolity into the New Year period! We wish all of our connections the best of luck and a safe weekend! INSIDE THIS ISSUE WINNERs News, getting to know Lee magorrian & photos admin@cwallerracing.com
2 l CHRIS WALLER RACING - WINNERS THIS WEEK axiomatic 3yo F O Reilly - Axiom by Zabeel Having won her maiden impressively at Kembla at her previous start this lightly raced filly took the step up to city class in her stride when scoring at Warwick Farm on Wednesday over 1600m. Tye Angland took the mount and he settled this beautifully bred daughter of O Reilly at the rear of the six horse field early on giving her plenty of time to find her feet. As they approached the turn into the straight, Angland began to stoke the filly up and she was in full swing when they straightened. Once Angland pulled her to the outside she began to lengthen and she put her rivals away scoring a soft victory at the finish. This was an impressive win against the colts and geldings and she looks like a very promising filly that should continue to improve as she steps up in distance. WATCH the race replay. video preview Make Sophie and Chris s day and click on the image to the left to go to this week s video update with plenty of valuable insights into our runners this weekend! Thanks to Bradley Photographers and darryl sherer for our weekly photos.
3 Bright Future for Blueblood A $300,000 investment at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale looks like paying dividends for well-known breeders and racing men John Cornish and Alan Osburg. Three year-old O Reilly filly Axiomatic looked good when breaking her maiden by more than seven lengths at Kembla on December 10 and she followed up with another classy effort to beat the colts and geldings at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. Prepared by Chris Waller, Axiomatic relished the 1600 metre journey to power home and win by a length, her second win from four starts. The last 100-metres certainly showed her class, Waller said. I think she s got the makings of a really nice middle distance horse. She s got a lovely long loping action, gets her head down low and I think that will see her stretch out to 2000-metres. Bred by Alan Galbraith and foaled and raised at Willow Park Stud, Axiomatic is a half-sister by O Reilly to dual Group I winner Xtravagant and Group III winner He s Remarkable, who was also Group I placed. He s (Xtravagant) obviously the pin up boy from New Zealand at the moment and I think she s well on the way to doing some of those things herself, Waller said. Winning rider Tye Angland was also full of praise for Waller s progressive filly. It took her probably half a furlong to wind up and get balanced but the further she got the better she got, Angland said. It even took me a little bit to pull her up. Purchased by Ric Wylie Bloodstock, Axiomatic is the fifth winner for unraced Zabeel mare Axiom, a daughter of Group II AJC Villiers Stakes winner Arletty. She is bred on the same O Reilly x Zabeel cross as Group I winning fillies Silent Achiever and O Marilyn. Willow Park will offer the current yearling from Axiom, a colt by Redoute s Choice, at the 2017 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. - Breednet.com.au
4 chris Waller firm on his future at Flemington He reinforced his position as one of Australia's most successful trainers over the past 12 months and has a strong strike rate in Victoria, but Chris Waller intends to resist any temptation to expand his Melbourne base. Waller has taken Sydney racing by storm in the past few years and now has huge numbers of runners each Saturday in the Harbour City. But not even a Cox Plate at Moonee Valley earlier this year and a steady stream of winners every time his stable crosses the border will influence him to expand his numbers in Melbourne. The former Kiwi has 25 stables at Flemington and has no intention of asking for more boxes, even though he would fill them overnight. "I just want to stay at 25, it works well at 25 and I don't want a big number to be here in Melbourne. It's just a matter of being organised and functioning well. "We are doing that, we have an excellent routine, but I've also got to think of the quality of life that you have when you have so many horses. "My Sydney owners understand clearly that their horses start in Sydney and they may well progress to Melbourne if there are suitable races. And that happens quite often," Waller said. Waller, who returned home to New Zealand with his family for Christmas, will be aiming for a third Cox Plate with the all-conquering Winx next year, believes he will maintain his numbers in Sydney and Melbourne in "As I get older, I seem to get more meticulous or particular about things at the stables and when you are particular it slows down the system that you have in place, so no, we won't be expanding Melbourne. "I've got some lovely horses that we're looking to in the new year, so it's just finding balance or that happy medium about having a big team of horses and enjoying your own life at the same time," he said. - The Age
