1 NEWSLETTER October 2009 A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills, and uses these skills to accomplish his goals. Larry Bird From the Head Master s Desk Dear Parents and Friends of the Academy There are only two issues that I want to speak about this month, the first is that our matrics have started their final exams and I am sure that everyone would want to wish them well. We know that the matric exam time is a stressful time under normal circumstances. However our apprentices continue with their work riding and racing during the exam process. So we really do wish them all the best. The other issue that I would like to mention is how proud I am of our apprentices and the way they have been performing lately on the race track. A number of the apprentices have ridden doubles during this month and a treble and we congratulate, Derrick David who rode a double on the 2 nd October at Arlington. Donavan Mansour then went and rode a treble on the 3 rd October at Turffontein. On the same day Aldo Domeyer rode a double at Kenilworth. On the 10 th October Karis rode a double at Kenilworth. Then there was a first ever double for Ryan Curling while riding at Clairwood on the 14 th October. On the 15 th October Derreck David then rode another double at the Vaal. Donavan Mansour then recorded another double on the 20 th October while riding at Turffontein. Karis then pulled another double riding at Fairview on the 25 th October. Then we had a double first ever double when Gareth Wright and Jassurick Jordaan both rode doubles on the 30 th October at Greyville. While one recognises the effort and hard work that the apprentices put in I really want to congratulate the riding masters who spend a lot of time with the apprentices. These men assist and put in a lot of effort to ensure that the quality of riding is of a high standard. I also want to really thank the trainers who use the apprentices on their horses and also assist these young men and women in progressing in their riding ability. My concluding comment is directed at the apprentices and to simply say to them that they themselves have set the bench mark, it is now up to them to maintain the standard. Best wishes Graham Bailey

Debbie is a registered nurse who qualified at the end of 1995 from St. Augustine s Hospital where she did a 4 year Diploma in general nursing, Midwifery, Community nursing and Psychiatric nursing. She was awarded the best general nurse of her group on completion of her studies. Since then she has worked in both medical and surgical wards holding charge nurse positions in both areas. She has also worked overseas and is most proud of being made the first non EU citizen to hold a senior charge sister post in the Republic of Irelands largest teaching hospital, St. James s Hospital in Dublin. Since returning from Ireland she worked at Westville Hospital running the Occupational Health Clinic and now joins us on a part-time contract. Since starting at the beginning of September this year she has been busy setting up our clinic and getting to know the apprentices, teachers and other staff members. She looks forward to the challenges the Academy has to offer and has really enjoyed her time with us so far. We all wish her a long and happy stay at the Academy! SAJA Racemeeting at Greyville On Friday 11 October, we hosted our final charity race meeting on a cold and drizzling evening at Greyville Racecourse. Fortunately the heavy rain held back resulting in no races being abandoned. The event was a great success raising over R for the Academy. 180 people attended the function in the Classic Room. The atmosphere was fantastic and the food at Greyville was, as usual, outstanding. We have received many compliments from guests that attended. Evert Pheiffer won the Mattress King Apprentice FM 67 Handicap on the night with Aldo Domeyer coming in second, Derreck David third and Andile Mlaba fourth. 2

Holland Wybrow & Associates for their kind cash donation Charles Grey our Marketing Manager for organizing the event. Grade 11 s & Post Matric s visit Summerhill Stud As part of our Equine Studies Curriculum, the Grade 11 s and Post Matric s got the amazing opportunity to visit to the famous and beautiful Summerhill Stud situated near Mooi River for a period of three days. On our first night we were woken up at about 11pm to witness foals being born. In total we saw the birth of approximately eight foals. While observing one of the mares foaling she began to experience difficulties and the vet had to perform an emergency caesarian operation. 4

5 Each morning we were woken up at 6am to saddle, trot and canter the two year olds. During our time at Summerhill we assisted with the teasing of mares and watched coverings. One of the stallions that we watched covering a mare was the racing legend Kahal. We also assisted the staff at Summerhill with taking temperatures of the sick foals and we also learned how to administer drips. Jaswick and Teaque cuddling a foal During our time at Summerhill we had to cook our own meal which was great fun and went fishing. Teaque caught a big bass and gave it to one of the grooms and I sure he and family enjoyed it for dinner. On behalf of all the apprentices, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Summerhill Stud for allowing us to ride their horses and for providing us with this fantastic educational experience. One of these days we ll be winning on the horses we met. By Teaque Gould & Stallone Lee Naidoo 5

6 A Fun Day for apprentices To distress before the final exams, our apprentices participated in a fun day at the Academy. Activities included a treasure hunt, soccer, boerewors braai and a crazy relay competition in our covered arena. A great time was had by all. 6

He headed for the coach and said much to the coach s surprise, "I'd like to try out for the team." The manager eventually recovered from hearing a horse talk and said, "Really? Let me see you catch a few." The horse walked to the boundary and caught every ball hit to him. The manager asked him to bowl. The horse bowled the ball toward the batsman with amazing accuracy and speed taking the middle stump. Picking up bat a few minutes later, the horse proceeded to hit six after six. The manager said, "Not bad at all. Now let me see you run." The horse said, "If I could run, I'd be in the Vodacom Durban July!"
