4 à Riders will run to the opposite end of the arena and come to a sliding stop in the keyhole. à Execute 4 ½ spins in one direction inside the keyhole, without touching the edges. à Rider will run out of the keyhole, past the start line, and execute a sliding stop. RANCH RIDING CHALLENGE: à All rules are directly from the AQHA handbook under RANCH RIDING à The purpose of the ranch riding class is to measure the ability of the horse to be a pleasure to ride while being used as a means of conveyance from performing one ranch task to another. The horse should reflect the versatility, attitude and movement of a working ranch horse riding outside of the confines of an arena. The horse should be well trained, relaxed, quiet, soft and cadenced at all gaits. The ideal ranch horse will travel with forward movement and demonstrate an obvious lengthening of stride at extended gaits. The horse can be ridden with light contact or on a relatively loose rein without requiring undue restraint, but not shown on a full drape of reins. The overall manners and responsiveness of the ranch riding horse to make timely transitions in a smooth and correct manner, as well as the quality of the movement is of primary considerations. The ideal ranch riding horse should have a natural ranch horse appearance from head to tail in each maneuver. à Class requirements: o Each horse will work individually, performing the required gait maneuvers and a minimum of three optional maneuvers. Horses will be scored on the basis of 0 to 100 with 70 denoting an average performance. Each maneuver will receive a score that should be added or subtracted from 70 and is subject to a penalty that should be subtracted. Each maneuver will be scored on the following basis, ranging from plus 1 ½ to minus 1 ½. - 1 ½ extremely poor - 1 very poor - ½ poor 0 correct + ½ good + 1 very good + 1 ½ excellent o The required gait maneuvers will include the walk, trot, and lope, both directions: and the extended trot and extended lope at least one direction; as well as stops and back. o The optional maneuvers may include a side pass, turn of 360o or more, change of lead (simple or flying), walk, trot or lope over a log(s); or some reasonable combination of maneuvers that would be reasonable for a horse to perform or encounter during ranch work o The overall cadence and performance of the gaits should be as those described in GAITS (SHW334 Ranch Riding) with an emphasis on forward movement, free flowing, and ground covering for all gaits. Transitions should be performed where designated, with smoothness and responsiveness. o No time limit o The use of natural logs is encouraged o Posting at the extended trot is acceptable o Touching or holding the saddle horse is acceptable à Ranch Riding Penalties: o A contestant shall be penalized each time one of the following occurs: One (1) point penalties: Too slow (per gait) Over bridled (per maneuver) Out of frame (per maneuver) Break of gait at walk or trot for 2 strides or less Three (3) point penalties: Break of gait at a walk or trot for more than 2 strides Break of gait at a lope Wrong lead or out of lead Draped reins (per maneuver) Out of lead or cross-cantering more than 2 strides when changing leads Trotting more than 3 strides when making a simple lead change Severe disturbance of any obstacle Five (5) point penalties: Blatant disobedience (kick, bite, buck, rear, etc.) for each refusal Ten (10) point penalties:
5 Unnatural ranch horse appearance (horse s tail is obvious and consistently carried in an unnatural manner in every maneuver) (OP) Placed below horses performing all maneuvers eliminates maneuver Zero (0) score: illegal equipment No specific penalties will be incurred for nicks/hits on logs but deduction may be made in maneuver score No specific penalties will be incurred for over/under spins but deduction may be made in maneuver score LEAD CHANGE CHALLENGE: à Whichever rider performs the most lead changes in a straight line along the length of the arena will place first. à Horse may be ridden one or two handed. à In the event of a tie, the judge will decide how to break the tie. TEAM CHALLENGE: à Teams of equal numbers of individuals (up to 3 per team) will be made by the show secretary as entries into the show are made. Only individuals pre-entered for this show will be allowed to participate in the team challenge. à Participants will be placed on teams based on a random draw system (names drawn out of a hat). à Prizes will be awarded to the top 2 teams (champion and reserve champion) à Points will be awarded as follows: 1 st place: 5 points 2 nd place: 4 points 3 rd place: 3 points 4 th place: 2 points 5 th place: 1 point à Scores will be added up and divided by the total number of runs entered on each team. For example: Team 1 enters 9 classes total and achieves 3-1 st s (15 pts), 2-2 nd s (8 pts) and 1-3 rd (3 pts) for a total of 26 points. This number is divided by 9 for a final point score of Team 2 enters 11 classes total and achieves 4 1 st s (20 pts) and 2-3 rd s (6 pts) for a total of 26 pts. The number is divided by 11 for a final point score of à Prizes will be awarded based on the final point score. LONGEST SLIDE: à The horse/rider combination to perform the longest slide with BOTH feet in the ground will place first. à If a slide is completed and both feet are only in the ground for a portion of the slide the tracks will be measured to the place where one foot came out of the ground. à If that foot re-enters the ground at a later portion it will not be considered part of the slide. à The judge s decision will be final à In the event of a tie, the judge will decide how to break the tie. à Horses may be shown one or two handed. FREESTYLE: à All rules are directly from the NRHA handbook under Freestyle Reining à Freestyle reining provides an opportunity to use the reining maneuvers creatively, but also allows riders to expand them to music by means of choreography. Riders are encouraged to use musical scores which permit them to show the athletic ability of the horse in a crowd-pleasing way. à NRHA rules will apply except where the following rules preempt same à Required maneuvers: will be defined as follows: o A minimum of four (4) consecutive spins to the right o A minimum of four (4) consecutive spins to the left o A minimum of three (3) stops o A minimum of one (1) lead change at the lope from right to left o A minimum of one (1) lead change at the lope from left to right à Exhibitors will only be judged astride à Exhibitors are allowed to use two (2) hands (as well as one or no hands) and any bit approved by the NRHA handbook, including snaffle bits and bosals approved for use in the Snaffle Bit or Hackamore classes
6 à Failure to perform all the required maneuvers or failure to complete the performance within the time limit will result in a score of zero (0) à Additional maneuvers such as rollbacks, backups, speed variations and non-classical reining maneuvers such as half pass and side pass are appropriate in Freestyle and shall be given appropriate credit. Additional repetitions of required maneuvers are appropriate, but will only add or subtract from the existing scores already given for the required maneuvers, not as additional scores à All equipment must be non-abusive and humane based on NHRA rules and guidelines and any equipment not specifically covered by or in conflict with standard equipment guidelines must be non-abusive to the horse. à Time Limit. A maximum of four (4) minutes including any introductions. The time limit will be from the beginning of the music or from the beginning of the introduction (whichever is first) and will end with the music. à Costumes. Permitted but not required. Emphasis is placed on performing the reining maneuvers to music. à Props: Permitted by at no time may hinder the judge s view of the horse. The use of props will not add to the score. à Judging: o The required maneuvers in Freestyle will receive a score based on technical merit from the technical judges utilizing judge s score cards specifically designed for Freestyle. Transitional maneuvers and other maneuvers not specified as reining maneuvers will be evaluated and scored accordingly in a specified box and counted as a single maneuver score. If an artistic impression judge is used, they must use the score sheet provided by NRHA and are encouraged to include remarks regarding performance. In the event an artistic judge is not used the technical judges will assess an artistic impression score in the box specified using a -2 to a +2 evaluation. o As part of the overall score, each judge would weigh the artistic impression of the ride as 10 percent of the overall ride. o In the event that a tie occurs, the technical merit scores will be tallied to break the tie. In the event a tie remains, the exhibitors tied will be declared co-champions. o Validating required maneuvers will be the responsibility of the judge. However, at least one scribe will be used to assist in verifying the required maneuvers for each horse as they are completed in the pattern. o All five (5) point penalties may apply except holding the saddle or saddle horn with either hand, which is allowed. o Eliminations are to be used at the discretion of the show management. à Freestyle reining may offer both an Open and a Non Pro freestyle class. Show management will reserve the right to run them concurrently or separately. à Show management will reserve the right to rule on music or dress which may be inappropriate or offensive to the spirit and nature of the show. HORSE OF THE YEAR AWARD à Horses can collect points at all six schooling shows à Open to all classes for horses à One score, being the highest for that day, will be entered for that one horse. One, 2 or 3 or more riders on the same horse will still only have one entry for the horse that day à All point for a total of six shows per horse at the year end are to be totaled. Horse with the highest score for the year end wins Horse of the Year. à Level of rider and/or class has no bearing on this award. VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD à To be awarded to an individual that exhibits willingness to help with various tasks at schooling shows and in other capacities à The individual may not necessarily be the person who volunteers the most time, but will be a person who time and again demonstrates their willingness to help the North Branch grow and succeed over the year. à The recipient is to be determined by the show secretary of the branch and the committee chair person. à The recipient does not have to be a person who actively rides in the schooling shows, however that person must be a member of Reining Alberta
