1 Stewards Report Tamworth Jockey Club TAMWORTH RACECOURSE Monday 21 st May 2012 Weather: Fine Track: Good 3 Rail: True Stewards: S Cullen (Chairman), B Kliese & S Woolaston Riding Changes: Race 5: L Cumberland replaced D Northey (overweight ($150) (AR120b) Race 7: H Martin replaced J Drury (injured race 6) Race 8: M Squires replaced J Drury Race 1: Maiden Handicap 1200m Trainer Mr. R Northam was fined $200 (LR36) for failing to scratch Sparkling Lily by the prescribed time. Fairview s Delight and Dazzling Dash were slow to begin. When placed under pressure inside the 300m Jura Regalia hung in and placed its rider at a disadvantage. Race 2: Maiden Handicap 1200m Temple Of Poseidon which was fractious in the barrier was inspected by the clubs veterinary officer and declared unfit. Acting on this advice Temple Of Poseidon was withdrawn at 1.04pm and when correct weight was declared it was ordered that all bets made on Temple of Poseidon be refunded in full and with regard to betting with bookmakers, all successful wagers made before 1.04pm were to be subject to the following deduction on the face value of the betting ticket: 1 st Just Like Maggie 1 cent Win and 1 cent Place 2 nd Jedak 4 cents Place 3 rd African Child 6 cents Place Stable representative Mr. W Sattler was told that prior to racing again, Temple Of Poseidon would be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. Near the 1000m Mini Hurricane had to be checked severely to avoid the heels of Jedak which was hampered and carried in by Just Like Maggie (C Van Der Werf), which shifted in when not clear. C Van Der Werf was severely reprimanded (AR137a). Rounding the turn near the 800m Cocktail Time which was racing fiercely, shifted out abruptly and hampered Mini Hurricane and Bringin Sexy Back.

2 Race 3: Class 1 Plate 1600m Ringthebellringo and Semenya were slow to begin. For some distance approaching the home turn Konigssee was held up and unable to go forward, then passing the 400m was taken wide on the track to improve. A post race veterinary examination of Baradane which pulled very hard in the early and middle stages then weakened inside the 500m, revealed the gelding was in a distressed condition with an elevated heart rate. Trainer Mr. J Englebrecht said that in his opinion Baradane had raced with its tongue over the bit which restricted its breathing and he intended to experiment with tongue control devices during track work prior to adding such equipment as part of the gelding s race gear, before its next start. When questioned in relation to the performance of Raw Storm R Thompson explained that his mount failed to travel at any stage of the race and despite his efforts throughout, the gelding was lethargic and could not improve. A post race veterinary examination of Raw Storm did not reveal any abnormality. Trainer Mr. T Howlett said that Raw Storm would be spelled. Race 4: Class 1 Handicap 1200m Smoke It Up and Trial To Triumph were slow to begin. A post race veterinary examination of Brookton Flare which weakened quickly inside the 400m revealed the filly was suffering cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer Mr. B Lockwood was told that prior to racing again Brookton Flare would be required to undergo a full veterinary examination including an electrocardiograph examination, then compete satisfactorily under full race day conditions in an official barrier trial and immediately thereafter pass a veterinary examination of fitness. Race 5: Benchmark 54 Handicap 1000m For some distance rounding the home turn Ballintine was awkwardly placed racing tight on the inside of I ll Takemanhatten then was hampered passing the 300m, when The Tapdancer shifted out in search of clear running. For a considerable distance in the home straight Alshyma was disappointed when attempting to obtain clear running and went to the finish racing in restricted room. Race 6: Benchmark 55 Handicap 1000m After being placed in the barrier Jendrick reared resulting in J Drury injuring her left ankle. As J Drury was unable to ride, Jendrick was withdrawn at 3.28pm and when correct weight was declared it was ordered that all bets made on Jendrick be refunded in full and with regard to betting with bookmakers, it was ordered that all successful wagers made

3 before 3.28pm, be subject to the following deduction on the face value of the betting ticket: 1 st Camorino 6 cents Win & 7 cents Place 2 nd Sutton Surprise 5 cents Place 3 rd Border Flight 7 cents Place Trainer Mr. C Martin was told that a warning for being fractious in the barrier would be placed on the racing record of Jendrick and should it perform similarly in future, it would be placed in barrier trials. J Drury was transported to Tamworth Base Hospital for observation. Groover Girl was slow to begin. For some distance approaching the 200m Border Flight raced in restricted room and near the 150m had to be steadied and shifted out to go forward. Near the 100m Hesashow was hampered by Camorino (J Taylor), which shifted in under vigorous riding. J Taylor was asked to exercise more care in future. A post race veterinary examination of Dysturb did not reveal any abnormality. Race 7: Benchmark 64 Handicap 1200m Mystery Flight was slow to begin. A post race veterinary examination of Zeeyajimi which over raced in the middle stages after being ridden vigorously to lead, then weakened from the 500m, revealed the gelding displayed a poor recovery. An endoscopic examination of Zeeyajimi also failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer Mr. L Davies undertook to place Zeeyajimi in an official barrier trial prior to racing again. Race 8: Class 3 Handicap 1400m Borayme raced fiercely in the early stages. Atomic Blaze pulled hard in the middle stages and would not settle. Passing the 200m Clear Knight was buffeted between Distract and Twin Zero which shifted out to improve. When questioned in relation to the performance of Chip N Chase B Spriggs explained that he had been instructed to ride his mount in a position where it traveled comfortably in the early stages and attempt to improve from the 500m. He said that Chip N Chase dwelt slightly at the start, however he was able to obtain a midfield position and although being three wide, his mount raced comfortably with cover. He said that passing the 700m he attempted to improve however the gelding did not respond as well as he had hoped and because of this he was taken wider by other runners also improving at that point. He added that after this, his mount did not respond strongly to his constant urgings and ran to the finish only fairly. A post race veterinary examination of Chip N Chase did not reveal any abnormality. Stable representative Mr. B Wintle said that it is the intention to increase the distance of the gelding s races and whoever rode it in future would be instructed to be positive in the early stages in an attempt to establish a prominent mid race position. Their explanations

4 were accepted. When questioned in relation to her ride on In Nomine Patri C Van Der Werf explained, that she had been instructed to have her mount in a position forward of midfield in the early stages and to go forward from the 600m. She said that she became concerned in the initial stages that she would be trapped very wide on the track and for this reason elected to ease her mount and obtain a position near the running rail. She said that during this process she got further back than she intended and passing the 1300m although she was now last, she elected not to ride with vigour as the gelding was traveling well and she thought that she could improve into the race gradually. She said that she placed In Nomine Patri under heavy pressure passing the 700m and did not immediately gain a response, however when rounding the home turn the gelding began to improve and ran to the finish strongly. Trainer Mr. G Bennett confirmed the instructions and expressed some disappointment in the lack of urgency displayed by the rider in the early stages. C Van Der Werf who was competing at her first Australian race meeting today was told that her ride in the early and middle stages was of concern and it would be referred to the rider s advisory board for their consideration. A post race veterinary examination of In Nomine Patri did not reveal any abnormality.
