3 General Rules PLEASE READ THOROUGHLY! 1. The show is open to riders of all ages and disabilities. Riders do not need to be part of a Local Training Program (LTP). 2. SO rules require athletes to be 8 or older to compete. 3. All riders must wear ASTM approved protective headgear when mounted. 4. Appropriate riding attire is encouraged but not required. Proper and substantial shoes with heel must be worn. 5. No rider shall be attached to the horse or tack by straps, belts, Velcro or other means. 6. Rings #1 will take priority over Ring #2 (Obstacles), and classes will not be held up if horses are unavailable when called for class. 7. Competitors with Down Syndrome may not compete if they have a positive diagnosis for atlantoaxial subluxation. 8. The show management has the right to combine, divide or cancel classes as entries warrant, with maximum of 8 participants per class. Every effort will be made to announce the changes at the start of the show. 9. All horses and ponies must have a Negative Coggins taken within 24 months of the show date for equines stabled in New Jersey, and within 12 months of the show date for equines stabled outside of New Jersey. Equines stabled outside of New Jersey must also have a current health certificate. 10. Any equine stabled overnight must have a groom present at all times. Stall rental is available starting Friday evening. The cost is $35.00 per stall. Straw bedding is not permitted. Stalls do not have to be stripped at departure. Bedding is not provided. 3
4 11. Horse and/or tack cannot be in stall area unless a stall has been paid for. 12. If an equine or rider is entered in 2 classes with time conflicts, a gate hold must be requested for one of the classes at least two classes prior to the conflict. To request a gate hold, notify the gatekeeper for the appropriate ring, providing the rider s number, horse name and class number. This will give an additional 5 minutes before the start of the class. 13. In obstacles, the entire class will be judged for HRH ribbons, and SO rider scores only will count toward SO ribbons & medals. 14. Riders may not cross enter divisions (e.g. Walk/Trot/Canter and Walk/Trot) 15. Horses may not be shared with more than 2 (two) riders entered in the same class. 16. Only SO-NJ athletes may compete for SO ribbons and medals. All riders compete for HRH ribbons. 17. Riders competing with western saddles will be judged at the jog instead of the trot and at the lope instead of the canter. 18. All classes will be judged on horsemanship the rider s equitation and effort to guide and control their mount. 19. Hearing-impaired riders must provide his/her own sign language interpreter, if needed. 20. All riders warming up horses must wear a helmet and sign a release waiver. Please use the attached Medical and Release form, leaving the medical information blank. 21. Horses may be warmed up/lunged only in designated areas. 22. All dogs must be leashed at all times. 23. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted at the Horse Park. 4
5 24. Bicycles are not permitted on the grounds during this show. 25. No post entries for The Isaac Trophy, with a maximum of two entries per program. 26. If show is held indoors due to the weather the schedule may change. 27. In order to keep to the time schedule the gate will close after 5 minutes please have your horses and riders ready to enter the ring! 28. NO REFUNDS There will be no refunds given for those who choose not to participate. 29. Each program must submit all entries, coggins, and release together. No entries will be accepted from individual riders separately from the program entries. 30. Special Olympic eligibility will be determined by SONJ ATTN INSTRUCTORS: REMINDER in order for riders to be eligible for Special Olympic awards, the proper SO paperwork (LTP, Medicals) needs to be sent to SONJ Susan Mejia SM@sonj.org If you wish to receive a copy of the Show program before the morning of the show you MUST provide your on the entry form 5
6 Class Descriptions NOTE: A rider holding area will be provided at the front of both the obstacle and equitation rings. Riders will be required to check in with the gatekeeper in the holding area one class prior to the start of the riders class. Mounting blocks are permitted inside the rider holding area, and will also be provided in the rider holding area. EQUITATION/PATTERN Classes will be run according to the USEF Hunt Seat and Western Equitation and Special Olympic Rules. Classes may be split based on size and sharing of horses BUT NO MORE THAN TWO RIDERS CAN SHARE THE SAME HORSE IN THE SAME EQUITATION CLASS. OBSTACLES Riders will be judged on their horsemanship, meaning equitation and effort to guide and control their mount. Class may be called by Ring Steward as written, at the rider s request. Entry Fee: $15 (early) $20 (late) 6
7 Non Independent Divisions Walk Only Division Riders must be on the lead-line with a Leader and may have 1 or 2 side-walkers. 1. Walk only Equitation Judged at the walk only in both directions. May be asked to halt, circle or reverse direction. 12. Walk only Obstacles Course will consist of 4 obstacles and at least one change of direction and halt, at the walk only. A Leader is required, and 1 or 2 side walkers may be used. The horse will be on the lead at all times. Novice Walk/Trot Division Riders must be on the lead-line with a Leader and may have 1 or 2 side-walkers. 2. Novice Walk/Trot -. Riders may be asked to halt, circle or reverse direction at the walk, and to trot (sitting or posting) a short distance in both directions. 13. Novice Walk/Trot Obstacles - Course will consist of 4 obstacles and at least one change of direction, halt, and a short trot. A Leader is required and 1 or 2 side walkers may be used. The horse will be on the lead at all times. Intermediate Walk/Trot Division Rider must have a Leader and may have 1 or 2 side-walkers. The horse will be off the lead at the walk, but on the lead for the trot. Side-walkers may be used at the walk and trot. 3. Intermediate Walk/Trot - May be asked to halt, circle or reverse direction at the walk, and to trot (sitting or posting) a short distance in both directions. 14. Intermediate Walk/Trot Obstacles - Course will consist of 4 obstacles and at least one change of direction, halt, and trot. A Leader is required and 1 or 2 side walkers may be used. The horse will be off the lead at the walk and on the lead for the trot. 7
8 Independent Divisions ** All programs with riders participating in independent classes must provide a spotter for each rider in the ring for safety purposes, however any assistance (verbal or physical) will be penalized. Independent Walk Only Division Rider may have a spotter in the ring who will remain close to the horse s head. The horse will be off the lead at all times, and assistance (verbal or physical) will be penalized. 4. Independent Walk only Equitation Judged at the walk only in both directions. May be asked to halt, circle or reverse direction. 5. Independent Walk only Pattern Riders will be asked to follow a straight line at a walk, circle left, halt and then return to the lineup at a walk. 15. Independent Walk only Obstacles Course will consist of 4 obstacles and at least one change of direction and halt, at the walk only. The horse will be off the lead at al times. 8 Advanced Intermediate Walk/Trot Division.Rider must have a spotter in the ring who will remain close to the horse s head. The horse will be off the lead at the walk and trot at all times, and assistance (verbal or physical) from the spotter will be penalized 6. Advanced Intermediate Walk/Trot - Riders may be asked to halt, circle or reverse direction at the walk, and to trot (sitting or posting) a short distance in both directions. 7. Advanced Intermediate Walk/Trot Pattern Riders will be asked to follow a straight line at a walk, then trot, and finally a halt. 16. Advanced Intermediate Walk/Trot Obstacles - Course will consist of 4 obstacles and at least one change of direction, halt, and trot. A spotter is required in the ring that will remain close to the horse s head. The horse will be off the lead at the walk and the trot.
9 Advanced Walk/Trot Division Riders will ride independently at the walk and trot. Rider may have a spotter in the ring who will remain in the center of the ring, and assistance (verbal or physical) from the spotter will be penalized. 8. Advanced Walk/Trot Riders may be asked to halt, circle and/or reverse at the walk and/or trot (sitting or posting) in a group. 9. Advanced Walk/Trot Figure 8 Pattern Riders will ride independently at the walk and trot. Riders will be asked to demonstrate a figure eight pattern at the trot. 17. Advanced Walk/Trot Obstacles - Course will consist of 5 obstacles and at least one change of direction, halt, and trot. Riders must be independent. Walk/Trot/Canter Division Riders will ride independently at the walk and trot and canter. Rider may have a spotter in the ring who will remain in the center of the ring, and assistance (verbal or physical) from the spotter will be penalized. 10. Walk/Trot/Canter - Riders may be asked to halt, circle and/or reverse direction at the walk and/or trot (sitting or posting) in a group. Riders will be asked to canter in both directions for a short distance, one at a time. 11. Walk/Trot/Canter Pattern Riders will be asked to demonstrate a figure eight pattern at the trot and a canter in a straight line for a short distance. 18. Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter Obstacles - Course will consist of 5 obstacles and at least one change of direction, halt, trot and canter. A jump will be included as an optional obstacle. Riders must be independent. 9
10 Special Class 19. The Isaac Trophy Open to all equines. In-hand obstacle course for a therapeutic horse or pony handled by a volunteer. Winning animal to receive a special ribbon and have his/her name and program inscribed on the permanent trophy. The class is designed to allow volunteers to show their favorite horse/pony in a unique and special way. Entries will be limited to a maximum of two (2) entries per program to help manage the length of the show. 10
11 Time Schedule 9:45 Opening Ceremonies (Special Olympic Oath and National Anthem) Show starts promptly at 10:00 am Ring 1 (Equitation) The pattern classes will immediately follow the flat class; those participating in the pattern class should remain in the ring. If a class is split due to size or a horse conflict, the second section will immediately follow the pattern class (e.g. 1A, 2A, 1B, 2B). The ring will close for 5 minutes at the end of each group (e.g. Walk Only). The ring will re-open and riders will have 5 minutes to enter the ring before the gate will close, and the next class group will start, unless a gate hold has been placed on a class (see general rules). 1. 12 Ring 2 (Obstacles) A time slot has been assigned to each obstacle class you may not enter the ring before your time slot. You may complete your obstacle class after your time slot; however, ALL entries in classes 10, 11 and 12 MUST be finished before the lunch break, as the awards will be presented at the start of the afternoon session. Horses must walk the course prior to 9 am Riders may walk the course between 9 and 9:45 am 14. Intermediate Walk/Trot 10:00 to 10: Walk only 10:30 to 11: Novice Walk/Trot 11:00 to 12:30 1 hour Lunch Break Course may be walked 1:00 to 2:00 (Riders only) Afternoon session not to start before 2 pm May start later than 2pm depending on schedule Award Presentations 2:15 to 2:30 (Classes 12-14, 19-20) 16. Advanced Int. Walk/Trot 2:30 to 3:00 15 Independent Walk only 3:00 to 3:30 18 Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter 3:30 to 4:00 17 Advanced Walk/Trot 4:00 to 4:30 Award Presentations (Classes 16-18) 15 minutes after last obstacle rider is done Class 19 The Isaac Trophy Class will start a half hour before the lunch break and run through the lunch break. It will be held in a separate area so it does not conflict with the schedule of classes. Specifications for this class are that the horse responds to all commands quickly and is unflappable. 12
13 Directions to the Horse Park (the Horse Park is handicapped accessible) FROM THE NJ TURNPIKE: Take Exit 7A to Route 195 East to Exit 11. Make a left to Route 524, and then make a right. Horse Park is on the left, approximately 1 1/2 miles. FROM THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY: Take Exit 98 to Route 195 West to Exit 11. Make a right to Route 524, and then make a right. Horse Park is on the left, approximately 1 1/2 miles. 14 Entry Information Riders may enter a total of three classes: Independent equitation, pattern, obstacles Non-independent - equitation, obstacles All entry forms and HRH medical forms must be completely filled out, including signatures and postmarked by September 10, Late entries will be accepted after that if postmarked by September 17, No post entries, phone entries or entries on show day will be accepted. Special Olympic (SO) eligibility will be determined by SO NJ All forms for SO must be submitted and complete according to SO guidelines (see page 15). All entries must be accompanied by the appropriate fees. Programs are responsible for arranging for payment of the fees to HRH of New Jersey. No fees will be accepted at the show. The equitation and pattern classes in a group (e.g. Advanced Walk/Trot and Advanced Walk/Trot Pattern) will remain in the ring until completion and pinning of both classes. The ring will then be closed for 5 minutes. The gate will then re-open, allowing five minutes for riders to enter the ring, after which the gate will be closed and the class will start. The only exception to this will be if a Gate Hold has been requested; the gate will remain open an additional 5 minutes (see general rules) The Show will be held rain or shine. 15 Special Olympic Entries Special Olympic athletes will have 2 judges; one will judge all riders, and the other will judge SO riders only. There will be a single entry fee in these classes, but 2 sets of awards will be presented. Current SO medical forms are required for athletes competing for SO ribbons and medals. Programs entering SO riders must complete an LTP form and Fall Quota form. To obtain forms, call SO-NJ at (609) or contact Susan Mejia - SM@sonj.org.. Refer to SO rules for specific details. SO athletes are provided with lunch. All Special Olympic (SO) athletes must have their SO paperwork completed and submitted to Special Olympics New Jersey (SO- NJ) by September 14, 2018 in order to compete for Special Olympic medals and ribbons. PLEASE NOTE: SO will validate an athlete s participation for the SO ribbons. The Horse Show Committee will not have any influence over SO participation.
