Tipperary, Ireland. The colt is also the first foal out of Chrysanthemum, a 6-year-old Danehill Dancer mare who captured two Group 3 stakes during her racing career and was also Group 1-placed LEADING FRESHMAN SIRES PAGE LEADING NEW YORK GENERAL SIRES PAGE 7 Broodmare of the Week: Miss Wineshine The late sire and South African champion Wolf Power was represented by another graded stakes winner as a broodmare sire when Midnight Hawk, by Midnight Lute, won the Grade 3 Sham Stakes on Jan. 11. Midnight Hawk s dam, the Wolf Power mare Miss Wineshine, was a six-figure Keeneland yearling who flashed considerable talent during her only season of racing as a 2-year-old, winning a stakes and placing in three graded events. Honor Code pointing to Fountain of Youth Trainer Shug McGaughey said he is eyeing a February return for his top Kentucky Derby prospect Honor Code, who will make his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 22. McGaughey said Honor Code, an A.P. Indy ridgling, has done well since arriving at Payson Park shortly after he closed out his 2-year-old campaign with a game victory over Cairo Prince in the Grade 2 Remsen. By DRF Breeding staff The first foal by unbeaten two-time European Horse of the Year Frankel, a colt out of Group 3 winner Chrysanthemum, was born at 8:30 p.m. local time Jan. 11 at Coolmore Stud in Co. Tipperary, Ireland. The bay colt is also the first foal out of Chrysanthemum, a 6-year-old Danehill Dancer mare who captured the Group 3 C.L. Weld Park Stakes as a juvenile and took the Group 3 Lodge Park Stud E.B.F. Park Express Stakes the following year. She was also Group 1-placed. From the reports that I have received, Frankel s first foal is everything we could have hoped for, Juddmonte Farms general manager Philip Mitchell said. These are very exciting times for everyone who has supported the horse and we much look forward to the rest of his first crop of foals. Juddmonte s release announcing the birth also described the foal as a handsome colt with a good head, a white blaze, and great presence. Frankel entered stud last year at Juddmonte s Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket, England, following the conclusion of a racing career that saw him win all 14 starts, including 10 Group 1 stakes. The Juddmonte homebred, a son of leading international sire Galileo, earned over $4.7 million on the track and received the Cartier Award as Europe s Horse of the Year in 2011 and Frankel s star-studded first book included U.S. classic producer Oatsee, Kentucky s Broodmare of the Year; British Broodmare of the Year honorees Arrive and Binche; Eclipse Award winners Lahudood, Stacelita, and Zagora; Japanese champion Vodka; Prix de l Arc de Triomphe winner Danedream; multiple Grade/Group 1 winners Dar Re Mi, Heat Haze, and Midday; and Grade 1 winner Balance, a half-sister to Zenyatta. 3

4 Broodmare of the Week: Miss Wineshine By Nicole Russo Wolf Power has already proven himself a successful broodmare sire, with offspring produced by his daughters including reigning Horse of the Year Wise Dan. The late stallion can now add another Kentucky Derby contender to his résumé, as Midnight Hawk, in his second career start and first try around two turns, captured the Grade 3 Sham Stakes on Jan. 11. Midnight Hawk is out of Miss Wineshine, a stakes-winning and multiple graded stakes-placed daughter of Wolf Power. The Midnight Lute colt was bred and is co-owned by Mike Pegram, who purchased Texas-bred Miss Wineshine for $220,000 at the 1998 Keeneland September yearling sale. Wolf Power, South Africa s Horse of the Year in 1984, was imported to the U.S. the following year, and stood in Kentucky until his death in His runners include Grade 1 winner Freedom Cry; however, he has made a considerable impact with second-generation progeny as a broodmare sire. To date, daughters of the Flirting Around horse have produced four champions and 46 stakes winners for total earnings of over $45 million. Most well-known among these is Lisa Danielle, dam of reigning Horse of the Year Wise Dan. A Wiseman s Ferry gelding, Wise Dan also earned 2012 Eclipse Award honors as champion older male and champion turf male. After repeating in the Breeders Cup Mile, he is a finalist in all three categories for the 2013 awards, presented Jan. 18. Lisa Danielle is also the dam of Grade 2 winner and multiple Grade 1-placed Successful Dan, and stakes winner Our Royal Dancer. Wolf Power s daughter Ask Anita is the dam of two-time Santa Anita Handicap winner Milwaukee Brew; the Wild Again horse, who earned more than $2.8 million, finished third in the 2002 Breeders Cup Classic before embarking on a solid stud career. Three other daughters of Wolf Power produced offspring who earned a combined $1 million or more, led by Nithi, dam of Grade 2 winner Bear No Joke, stakes winner Silver Nithi, and stakes-placed Jagger M. Other notable runners produced by Wolf Power s daughters include Steppenwolfer, third in the 2006 Kentucky Derby. Miss Wineshine was never worse than third in five starts as a juvenile in 1999, Shigeki Kikkawa Midnight Hawk, impressive winner of Saturday s Grade 3 Sham Stakes, is out of the stakes-winning Wolf Power mare Miss Wineshine, who was also graded stakes-placed during her racing career. winning once and earning $189,080. She finished second to eventual champion Chilukki in the Grade 3 Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs before winning her maiden in the Silver Spur Stakes at Lone Star Park in her third career start, rolling by 5 1/2 lengths. She then headed to Saratoga Race Course for the summer, finishing second by a head in the Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes and third in the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes behind Circle of Life and champion Surfside. The mare is now the dam of five winners from eight starters. Midnight Hawk is the mare s second stakes horse, following the Distorted Humor gelding Mayor Marv, winner of the 2009 Turf Paradise Derby. Pegram sold Miss Wineshine to Lantern Hill Farm for $15,000 at the 2012 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale, and she now resides at the Midway, Ky., facility. Shortly after her sale, the mare delivered a full brother to Midnight Hawk, who sold for $20,000 at the 2013 Keeneland September yearling sale to Juan Naciff. Miss Wineshine, also the dam of a yearling Successful Appeal filly, was bred to Lookin At Lucky for Out of the winning Cormorant mare Miss Mississippi, Miss Wineshine is a full sister to stakes winner Delta Wolf; a half-sister to stakes-placed winners Mr Mississippi and Southern Ending; a half to stakes-placed winner Usual Lies, also a stakes producer; and a half to stakes producer Mississippi Charm. 4

5 Honor Code pointing to Fountain of Youth By Mike Welsch Trainer Shug McGaughey said he is eyeing a February return for his top Kentucky Derby prospect Honor Code, who will make his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 22. McGaughey said Honor Code, an A.P. Indy ridgling, has done well since arriving at Payson Park shortly after he closed out his 2-year-old campaign with a game victory over Cairo Prince in the Grade 2 Remsen. He had a real good gallop this morning and the plan is to work him for the first time down here sometime later this week, McGaughey said Tuesday. We ve been in no rush with him, since he won t run until the Fountain of Youth. McGaughey won the Fountain of Youth and Grade 1 Florida Derby with Orb as stepping-stones to the colt s victory in the 2013 Kentucky Derby. McGaughey also confirmed that Mr Speaker will make his main-track debut a week from Saturday in the Grade 3 Holy Bull. The Holy Bull will probably determine what direction we go with him down the road, said McGaughey. I worked him behind a couple of horses at Payson and he took the dirt well, so we ll see what happens. We can always go back to the turf with him if we have to. Mr Speaker, a son of Pulpit, rallied to an impressive 2 3/4-length victory in the Grade 3 Dania Beach on the turf at Gulfstream Park on Dec. 21 in his 2-year-old finale. McGaughey said Top Billing, the third of his Derby hopefuls, would have a little work at Payson on Wednesday and be pointed for another allowance race within the next couple of weeks. Making his second start, Top Billing finished second behind Commissioner going 1 1/8 miles under allowance conditions here earlier this month. The Curlin colt won his debut at Laurel Park in December. Normandy Invasion prepping for comeback Normandy Invasion, who has not started since his fourth-place finish in the 2013 Kentucky Derby, continues to train regularly in preparation for his 2014 debut, which could come at Gulfstream Park next month, trainer Chad Brown said this weekend. Barbara D. Livingston Kentucky Derby prospect Honor Code will likely start in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 22 for his 3-year-old debut. Normandy Invasion breezed four furlongs in seconds on Sunday at Palm Meadows. The work was the fourth for the son of Tapit since his arrival at the training center late in fall. Normandy Invasion was given a break after the Kentucky Derby to point for the Travers at Saratoga before being sidelined for the remainder of his 3-year-old campaign due to a foot issue. Normandy Invasion captured one of six starts at 2 and 3 while also finishing second in the Grade 2 Remsen and second, beaten less than a length by Verrazano, in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial. Normandy Invasion swept to the lead after the opening mile of the Derby and continued to maintain the advantage to midstretch before gradually weakening to finish fourth, beaten slightly more than three lengths by Orb. He keeps picking it up a little more each week, said Brown. He worked in 49 and a couple with his last quarter in 24 and 1 on Sunday, and I thought he looked good doing it. He s filled out a lot since last year. You d be impressed looking at him now. He s never looked better physically. Whether he keeps that conditioning when I start running him is another question. Brown said it s still too early to pick out a specific race for Normandy Invasion s return. If everything looks good he should be ready to run here sometime in February, said Brown. He still has his entry-level allowance condition and we could use that as a tool to get him started and then point to a stakes. 5
