1 MANDURANG SOUTH PONY CLUB NEWSLETTER Welcome to the May Newsletter. I can t believe its Pony Club time again. Time seems to be flying along so quickly. Pack Up On Rally Days I would like to remind members that on rally days there is an expectation that all members help with the set up of equipment for the day and that everyone help at the end of the day to put equipment away and tidy up, regardless of who is on the roster. MSPC Horse Trials - 30 th of June 2013 Our Horse Trials are coming. It would be great to see all of our MSPC members riding and all of our parents helping. Horse Trials are not easy to run but if we have everyone helping out it will make it so much easier. Remember this event helps to support our club and members. We are not running the Geriatrics Horse trials this year but will have Supercross in September. We will only be hosting 2 events in 2013 instead of 3.

2 HORSE TRIALS IS THIS YOUR FIRST TIME? Below is a checklist to help you prepare for your first Horse Trials competition [Note: Horse Trial handbooks are available for purchase or download from PCAV Before the Competition Collect an entry form for the competition in which you wish to compete. These are ed through the club but are also available on the PCAV website. Our club is in the Midland Zone so it s a good idea to start close to home. Forward your entry form, money and stamped addressed envelope to the Event Secretary by the closing date. Like Mandurang PC, many clubs are changing to online entry. In this case you will receive your competition times via or the times will be posted on the organising committee s website. Check that you have been graded by your DC at a rally. This is recorded in your PCAV (Pony Club Association of Victoria) grading card/attendance record book. This grade is the level at which you will compete until such times as you are regraded. When you attend competitions at other venues you must always take your grading card with you. You will not be allowed to compete if you don t have it with you talk to your DC if you lose your book. Remember that is your responsibility to have your card correctly filled out. Buy a medical armband to wear at the competition. You cannot compete without one. This has your name etc., and any details that may be needed in case of an accident. You will need a copy of your dressage test. Remember to check the publication date of the test it will be printed on the entry form (You can buy copies of PCAV rule books for Dressage, and Horse Trials they can also be downloaded from the PCAV website). Remember to ride your horse regularly so that he/she is fit for the competition On the Day of competition Arrive at least one hour before your dressage test. This is a minimum as it will take this much time to register, get saddled, present at Gear Check and warm up.

3 Register at the office, collect your back numbers, map of the cross-country course and also the information booklet. It is your responsibility to have a regulation helmet (spot checks will be carried out at competitions). Gear Check: Remember you must be gear checked minutes before each phase of the competition i.e. before Dressage / before Cross Country / before Show Jumping Failure to do this leads to elimination Walk both the cross country and show jumping course. Listen for instructions throughout the day. You will be advised as to when you can walk the courses. Remember to be in full uniform and to carry your whip and helmet etc. when walking the show jumping course. End of the Day Return your back numbers to the office and your grading book will be returned to you. Make sure you are up with the rule book, IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF Am I allowed to wear spurs in dressage? (Only at grade 1 and 2) Is my riding whip the legal length? (see rule book) Is my bit suitable for dressage tests? (see rule book) Is my hair tied back and up so that my front and back numbers can be clearly seen? Do I know that I can t change my gear once that I have been gear checked (unless I am checked again)? Do I know that I must not get off my horse after the cross-country stage until the vet tells me? The vet will then check the health of my horse. Did I refer closely to the map when I walked the cross-country course? Are there any compulsory flags in the course? Do I know the speed at which I should be travelling? Do I know how much time I have to complete the cc course? Do I know that if I am eliminated I must immediately leave the course at a walk? Am I aware that three refusals at one jump, or four refusals over the whole course, will lead to my elimination?

4 Do I know the colour code for the grade level at which I am competing? Do I know what the proper procedure is if I think that the organizers have made an error with my results? Have I warmed up my horse before each stage? Have I got hay and water for my horse? This is only a brief guide that I found on the web. It is always easier if you can go to your first event, with someone that has been before, or another club member, and then they can help you out with any questions on the day. 7 Maryborourgh Horse Trials A Sea of brown and red.. DC Report Hi All, Unfortunately Lexie and I were unable to make the April rally, as we were off to the Man from Snowy River festival at Corryong for the week. I highly recommend that you visit this festival, as it is FULL of horsey things, and also non-horsey stuff for other members of your family. I had great reports about our new instructor, Sandra Diss taking you all through cross country, as well as Andrew with SJ, Lora with gear cleaning, and Laura for flat. I look forward at this rally, to see lots of sparkling gear. On a bit of a disappointing note, I did get some reports of riders talking and not paying attention to instructors. If you are waiting for your turn, or an instructor is speaking to another member, it is very important that you listen, as you can still be learning. On a brighter note, don t forget that our horse trials is on next month, and it would be great to see you all entered. For those of you that haven t competed before, read the article in this newsletter or ask for help from another member that has. Are award night was held last month, congratulations to those riders that received awards, and hopefully it will give other riders a little more incentive to get your horses, and gear a little bit cleaner etc.
