(Only credit card or e-check accepted for registration.) Competition by Patrols. Natural Patrols are encouraged. There may be no more than eight (8) boys in each patrol. 2 a. Patrol Flag, Equipment Check List (Minimum for EACH Patrol) b. 8 eight foot pieces of rope. Heavy sash cord is better. This rope should be pliable and well broken in to tie knots and long enough to tie lashings. c. 6 six foot poles. (Scout staves are OK. DO NOT bring logs) d. One hatchet with appropriate shield. e. SLED, towing harnesses, and spare ropes for repairing harnesses. In the event of no snow, other means of carrying equipment will be allowed. f. Fire starting implements: Lighters, matches, Flint and Steel, Bow drill, and magnifying glass are recommended. Points will be awarded according to difficulty, starting with the easiest. 1. First Aid Kit (BSA Handbook, pg 290) also include 8 triangular bandages, 2 sturdy blankets, and splint materials. i. Natural materials for fire (No flammable liquids or artificial starters permitted) j. Personal mess kit k. Sturdy cup for each patrol member. No paper or Styrofoam. l. Pencil and paper. 3 Rules and Regulations 1. A Registration fee of $8.00 per scout and adult will be charged to cover expenses, including patches, ribbons, refreshments, & awards. 2. A late fee of $5.00 per person will be added to any registration fees that are turned in after the deadline of January 5, No sled will be permitted to start out on the trail after the official start. 4. First through Fifth place will receive appropriate recognition. 5. Wise Memorial Lodge will serve as Headquarters. 6. Upon arrival, a Unit Leader and Senior Patrol Leader will report to the Lodge to check in, by sleds and patrols. The balance of fees will be paid at this time. 7. Natural patrols are encouraged to participate as a team. The number of boys pulling a sled is limited to a maximum of eight (8). No spares, no relief men, and no substitutes are permitted. The original boys starting the event must finish it. Non-competing sleds will not be allowed on the trails. 8. Adults and other non-participants are more than welcome to brave the cold and cheer for their favorite patrol. Coaching from the trail sides will not be permitted. Adults will not be allowed in memorial lodge during score recording, so that the final scores may be kept anonymous until the awards ceremony. Judges will issue warnings and any warnings will be reported to Derby Officials. 9. Registration must be completed and registration fee paid on or before the start of the Klondike Derby. Complete your roster form prior to registration at the Council Office, and bring a copy of the roster to check-in. 10. Each Patrol must have its own sled for the race. We cannot hold the proceedings by delaying the start of a patrol because it is waiting for a sled being used on the trail. Any Patrols not possessing a sled are encouraged to use their backpacking skills for the day s events. 11. Team regulations a. Patrols- No more than 8 boys per team and all must be registered in BSA. b. Natural Patrols should be used. It is obviously unfair to pick the biggest or strongest members of a troop to run a sled. c. The Scout Law will be the law of the course. d. Each SPL must finish the registration with a list of patrols and roster of each patrol participating and adult leaders. e. Absolutely no one except the original 8 boys starting may assist in any manner or touch the sled or towropes after the sled has left the starting line until after the sled crosses the finish line. f. Any patrol found out on the course when they should be at a station, without good reason, will have points deducted from their score. Klondike Derby Page 3 of 6 January 27, 2018

4 Rules and Regulations (cont d page 2) 12. Recommended Sled Specifications a. Sleds should be at least six feet in length, a height 39-45, and a width of b. Sleds should conform generally to specifications of blue prints furnished. However, originality in design is encouraged. c. All sleds should have runners exposed as per sketch. The maximum width established by the plans is four (4) inches. d. Toboggan bottoms are not recommended. e. Tobogganing of any curve of the sled runners is permissible provided the tobogganing does not extend more than 18 measured from the front tip of the runners. f. To save expenses, you may use whatever type of lumber you can secure. It need not be shown in the sample. g. Wheels may be attached if there is no snow. 13. The derby will be held regardless of weather conditions (except for extreme weather emergencies). Cancellation announcements will be called into radios stations, and Scoutmasters of each Troop will be called. 14. Each Patrol will be assigned a number, which should be displayed on the sled. This number will be your starting station number and you will rotate from there in numerical order according to your map. Patrols will stay at a station until rotation time. Any sled found on the trail before such time will have points deducted. 15. Upon arrival at a station you will check in with the judge(s). The judge(s) will tell you at that time what you are to do. The Patrol Leader may ask the judge(s) all the questions he wants pertaining to the project before the patrol begins, but once they say they are ready, no further questions about the project will be allowed. If an individual has any comment about a judge or any other matter, he or she is asked to take it up with the head judge. 16. No individual unit will be permitted to operate a concession stand. 17. Stations will be based upon information that may be found in the BSA Handbook, Venturing Handbook, The Fieldbook, and any of the books for Merit Badges required for Eagle. 18. Any and ALL injuries must be reported to the Memorial Lodge for record. Include: Name, type of injury, cause of injury, and treatment. Klondike Derby Page 4 of 6 January 27, 2018
