1 ARABIAN HORSE ASSOCIATION REGION I Summer 2007 Dinner Meeting Invitation Saturday, July 21st Euro Deli & Catering Old Town Front St., Temecula Social Hour -6:00 p.m. Dinner - 6:30 p.m. General Meeting - 7 p.m. R.S.V.P. no later than Tuesday, July 17th to Nancy Harvey (626) or at NHarvey440@aol.com Please leave your name and how many people in your party to Temecula, California, West on Rancho California Road, Left at First Light (Front Street & Jefferson) South to Old Town Front Street, Suite 113, Temecula, CA. Located across from Post Office on same side of Front St. Director's Message The Regional Show is over and I am slowly getting myself back into the old groove. It is with total respect for a job very well done that I say thank you to the Show Commission and all of the volunteers. These individuals put in long hours over several days making sure that all was right with the show. Phil Bourgeois never let up on the fairgrounds, personally making sure they did what they had promised. His assistant, Bill Hughes, spent his time putting out fires that both Phil and I started among other tasks. For all of the bickering over the lack of a pre-show, not one exhibitor complained about the alternate schedule and commented instead on how smoothly the regional show ran. I again extend a huge Thank You to everyone who put their best foot forward to make it all happen. Also, thank you to RKR Media and its staff for putting people in the stands as well as vendors on the show grounds for all of us to enjoy. The exhibitor s dinner, sponsored by Diane Povens and Brent Gilman and their restaurant Casa de Pico was terrific and may I say, enjoyed by over 200 people! Additionally, the Arena Room for sponsors, patrons, and guests was well received and proved to be a very nice, warm room from which to watch the Saturday night performance. The evening began with Nancy Harvey delivering Vaughan Smith to center ring by way of her beautiful carriage pulled by her national champion driving horse, Patagonia X, more commonly known as Poodle. Vaughan not only sang the National Anthem but also a song from Man of La Mancha, all while dresses as Don Quixote aboard his white stallion, Imperioso. Furthermore, Patience Prine-Carr entertained us with a dressage musical freestyle aboard her grey stallion affectionately know as Rickey. All in all, the evening ran smoothly and we finished right around 10:00pm. We did a great job staying on schedule thanks to our judges and our call-up man, Paul Bein. Thank you all for a job well done! On the national scene the ongoing Governence project is receiving the lion share of attention. I will give you an update after the next board meeting. Enjoy the summer and I will see you in July at the Regional meeting. Margaret

3 Hes The Most is also the Best in Region I Cypress Open It s a feeling you d like to be able to put in a bottle and keep forever. At least that s how Leslie Smith described her first stakes win with Hes The Most in the Region I Cypress Open Stakes on Saturday, May 26 at Los Alamitos Race Course in Cypress, California. You could have knocked me over with a feather, said Smith, who was experiencing her first stakes win after 10 years of racing Arabians with her husband, Don. I want more now! Based on his performance in the Region I Cypress Open, Hes The Most might be just the horse to give Smith more. The 4-year-old Makzan gelding showed pure heart in beating favorite Eagle One by a nose in the six-furlong event. By Stacy Pigott Ridden by Manuel Segundo, Hes The Most broke with the leaders from post position four, stalking Eagle One every step of the way. When Segundo asked Hes The Most for more in the stretch, the gelding responded with a gutsy nose victory over Eagle One while covering the six furlongs in 1:19 3/5. Eagle One, who races for Walter Frazier and Roger Lang, had a two-race winning streak snapped in the Region I Cypress Open. The four-time winner of more than $57,000 was ridden by Joy Scott. Richard Kiekow s Sakbee finished five lengths back in third, followed by Final Answer, Betti Jo and RW Country Angel. He ran a quick :57 4/5 when he won that first furlong race on January 11, Smith said of Hes The Most s six-length win in a nonwinners of three allowance at Los Alamitos. So I thought he might have more speed than we had seen lately. Smith bought Hes The Most from Deb Mihaloff Kirshner shortly after that win. Previously trained by Lynn Ashby, Hes The Most moved to the barn of trainer Russ Ragain. That January win was followed up by another win in April, with a few runner-up finishes thrown in along the way for good measure. Still, Smith was not overly confident in Hes The Most s chances against stakes horses. When I went to the walking ring he was 23-1, and I thought I really should put a show bet on him just in case, related Smith. I thought he d be doing well to place third against a couple of speedy rivals. He has been training well and is really fit, thanks to Russ, Smith added of Hes The Most, who eventually went postward at odds of 7-1. He was a little quieter than we thought he d be right before the race, but he woke up when it was time for business. Manuel Segundo did a great job of riding him. He timed his move perfectly, and then that stretch run was a real nail biter! Hes The Most now has his name in the history books in one of California s oldest and most prestigious Arabian races the Region I Cypress Open Stakes. Region I has supported the event for more than 25 years, starting at Fairplex Park in Pomona and moving to Los Alamitos in the early 1990s. With a stakes win and four lifetime wins now to his credit, Hes The Most has effectively moved himself out of the conditions he enjoyed earlier this year. According to Smith, the gelding will move to open allowance or stakes races from here. I m game for more stakes races. I d like to bottle that feeling! Smith said. I d also like to thank everyone who called and ed me their congratulations and support. It made that win all the more special.

5 A Message From Our Youth Director... Hey everybody! This is Gloria your Region One Youth Director, and there are some deadlines are approaching quickly. On June 25, AHYA Convention Delegate forms are due to AHA. Well, if you are wondering, what is a delegate, delegates shall be entitled to attend the Annual Convention and shall be entitled to the floor privileges. Voting delegates shall be entitled to vote on all questions properly coming before the convention. Delegates in attendance at the annual AHYA Convention also elect the officers of AHYA. Delegates are based on the membership status of each club. Each club having between 7 to 15 youth members are entitled to one youth delegate; 16 to 30, two delegates; 31 to 45 three delegates; etc. Delegates are selected by each club. For clubs that cannot send delegates to the AHYA convention, the Region Youth Director shall be responsible for ensuring that their Region has delegate representation from their Region. If you are interested or would like to become a delegate, contact your club s youth activities coordinator or me at onatekemnitz@aol.com. As you all know, Youth Nationals is at the end of July and there are a lot of activities to participate in, such as Convention, the golf cart contest, hippology contest, judging contest, the concert, and much more. For convention, there is a keynote speaker, and this year, her name is Liz Carlisle, there are workshops, games and icebreakers. Also the delegates vote for the upcoming executive board. The theme for Youth Nationals this year is Hollywood, and if you have any ideas for the golf cart contest, please let me know as soon as possible.
