Waller weekly news 25 august 2017 Winx - with her very own brand launched the day before (you can follow her on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram these days with a website due in September) - maintained her winning run at Randwick on Saturday with her most recent victory a poignant one for co-owner Debbie Kepitis with the race in honour of her father and a man the team s greatly indebted to in Bob Ingham. Foxplay s second in the Gr.2 Bob Ingham Warwick Stakes was also a thrill with both Magic Millions graduates identified by stable bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster. It was great to see Foxplay s all lady Star Thoroughbreds group of owners rejoicing despite coming second and finishing behind the might Winx as good as winning in many eyes. UK imports Sayed and Life Less Ordinary also filled runner-up spots at Randwick on the day while talented entire Comin Through was impressive first up with his win being the stable s other victory for the week. With only two more weeks before the start of the Sydney Spring Carnival, we re happy with where the team s at and look forward to celebrating many more memorable moments with our owners. We wish all of our connections the best of luck and a safe weekend! INSIDE THIS ISSUE WINNERs News & photos admin@cwallerracing.com

l CHRIS WALLER RACING - WINNERS THIS WEEK winx 6yo M Street Cry - Vegas Showgirl by Al Akbar The mighty mare made her eagerly anticipated return to racing on Saturday and although it wasn t plain sailing she didn t disappoint her legion of fans as she maintained her brilliant winning streak in taking out the Group 2 Bob Ingham Warwick Stakes over 1400m at Randwick. Regular rider Hugh Bowman was in the saddle and he showed once again why he is one of the worlds elite riders, not panicking when Winx badly missed the start and was soon four lengths from the rest of the field. Bowman allowed her to gradually tack on to the field and as they approached the straight she had worked into a challenging position. Stablemate Foxplay had got through on the inside part of the track and had shot a couple of lengths clear as they approached the final furlong and Winx still appeared to have plenty to do but she showed that she is a true champion as she quickened brilliantly to just get on top of a gallant Foxplay in the shadows of the post. comin through 4yo H Fastnet Rock - Mica s Pride by Bite The Bullet Comin Through showed he s now mature enough to live up to the potential the team has believed he had from the outset from the outset with his easy first up win at Randwick on Saturday. A half-brother to Criterion, the Sir Owen Glenn-owned and bred entire was partnered by regular rider Michael Walker. Bouncing out and hitting the front early, he travelled comfortably throughout the 1400m trip and when hitting the straight skipped away for a cosy success with his stablemate Life Less Ordinary running nicely into second. video preview Click on the image to the left to watch this week s video update with plenty of valuable insights into our runners this weekend from Charlie and Chris! track update Rosehill Track Manager Chris Toogood gives an update on track conditions ahead of Saturday s racing thanks to the ATC.

l Winx s Amazing Win Also Produced Amazing Sectional Times Champion mare Winx s (Street Cry) amazing first up win in Saturday s Warwick Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick also produced some amazing closing sectional times. After missing the start badly, Winx was not only back in last place in the eight-horse field, but due to the leaders setting a moderate tempo (first 800m in 49.09), she was in a race that had developed into a sprint home which saw the leaders clocking the last 600 metres in a brilliant Yet Winx produced a whirlwind and determined burst to grab a half-neck victory over her Chris Waller-trained stablemate Foxplay (Foxwedge) to the delight of virtually all that witnessed her achievement in registering her 18th successive win. And in keeping with Murphy s Law, the only horse not officially clocked by the Australian Turf Club s Longines timing system on the nine-race Randwick card all day was Winx, her timing clip apparently being dislodged when she was fractious in the barriers. But Vince Accardi s Daily Sectionals did subsequently record her times which showed that Winx had clocked one of, if not the fastest, last 600 metres run at Randwick. Winx s 200 metre breakdown (from the 600 metre point) being 10.92, and to give her a final 600 metre time of On The Watch hastens to add that times at Randwick were abnormal due to the extremely windy conditions, but that comment aside, Winx was facing an enormous task and she delivered with flying colours. Since this column commenced in August 2012, the fastest 600 metres sectional our analyses has revealed was recorded by the unbeaten champion Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) in winning the 2013 Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington. Black Caviar (clocked from the 800m to the 200m) ran 10.37, and to give her an amazing 600 metre sectional time of we have seen none faster. That is 1.23 seconds faster than Winx but it is still very interesting to compare the two great mares, even if Black Caviar s time was down the straight course at Flemington in a 1000 metre race while Winx was in a 1400 metre race and she came around a bend. Winx will now head to the Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Randwick on Saturday week, prior to running in the George Main Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) a fortnight later on 16 September, before heading to Melbourne in pursuit of her third successive Cox Plate (Gr 1,2040m) victory. - Ken Bowman, ANZ Bloodstock News

l Comin Through tries things from the front Comin' Through went to the paddock an awkward colt and has returned a mature horse, again showing some of the brute power of his half-brother Criterion. Trainer Chris Waller was content with the four-year-old's first-up win at Randwick but hinted the $4 favourite would have been even better if not forced to lead from the outset in the Broccolini Handicap over 1400m. The Fastnet Rock horse, who hadn't tasted victory since the Carbine Club Stakes last October, shares blood with multiple Group One winner and Cox Plate placegetter Criterion through their dam Mica's Pride. But he wasn't able to live up to expectation in the autumn when his four runs brought only placings in the Hobartville Stakes and Randwick Guineas. "Paddock watchers would have seen a different horse all together," Waller said. "He was like a two-year-old last prep and is now looking like a mature horse." Michael Walker said while a strong tailwind helped record a final 600m of seconds, Comin' Through still had more to give. "He's got 60.5kg on his back and he's just turned four and he was half-hearted so it's a pretty good effort," he said. "He was running in and out. As soon as I take the sit four or five back, he'll be a different horse." A neck behind was stablemate and import Life Less Ordinary ($10) whose outlook appears to be the Melbourne Cup. "He'll compete in some good races and hopefully he gets to Melbourne," Waller said. "I'd say Metropolitan or the Bart Cummings would be his first serious distance target." - AAP Racing

WINX WATCH - NEXT STOP, THE CHELMSFORD Winx didn t have a hard run, has pulled up in great order and is likely to be back at Royal Randwick in the Chelmsford Stakes in two weeks. This was trainer Chris Waller s succinct summation after the mighty mare s sensational win in the Group 2 $250,000 Bob Ingham Warwick Stakes (1400m) on Saturday. The Randwick crowd of 10,688 was treated to a memorable and thrilling return to racing by the world s best racehorse on turf but concerns she had a gut-buster to overcome a horror start before getting up in the final two strides were allayed by Waller. She has pulled up really well and at this stage I would say she will be back here in two weeks for the Chelmsford, Waller said. I don t want her to have four weeks between runs. Winx s win in the Warwick Stakes didn t go to plan but this will be remembered as one of her greatest efforts. The champion mare, very fresh and full of nervous energy, was unsettled in the barrier stalls and came out four lengths behind the field. Winx remained a clear last until the field swung around the home turn where Bowman took her wide to the centre of the track. She was still spotting the leaders six lengths and her rider, Hugh Bowman, admitted he was concerned the mare s famous winning streak was about to end. WATCH highlights from winx s 18th straight win Relive some of the excitement and colour from Saturday at Randwick where WINX recorded her 18th straight victory when taking out the Gr.2 Bob Ingham Warwick Stakes. Footage courtesy of the ATC.

I was a bit worried going past the 700m because of the way the track conditions are, they are running really slick times, Bowman said. I was thinking it could be mathematically impossible to catch them but there was nothing I could do about that, I just had to rely on the engine that I know is in her. I couldn t take off at the 700m to get closer or I would have run out of gas, so I just had to have confidence in her and ride her to run a race. I want her to win as much as anyone else but after what happened coming out of the barriers I had to renegotiate where I was obviously, and it was a concern halfway through but it was a good feeling the last 200m. I m proud of her and I m proud of everyone involved with her. It s been such an amazing journey for all of us and judging on what we saw this afternoon we might be in for a few good runs yet. Winx ($1.10) mowed down stablemate Foxplay ($20) to win by a half neck with Ecuador ($26) a long head away third Waller said Bowman s coolness under pressure enabled Winx to make it 18 consecutive wins. Hugh never panicked. When you put the reins in his hands you know you ve got the right man aboard, Waller said. He realised he had to make up a bit of ground and used the full length of the straight to do it. Winx s owners Peter Tighe and Debbie Kepitis both admitted they thought the mare had too much left to do on the home turn. They don t give you these races, you ve got to come here and earn them, Tighe said. She had to pull out all stops and just goes to prove she is something special. My heart was missing a few beats up the straight, these are good horses, the opposition are not slow coaches so to do what she did was phenomenal. We love her to bits. Kepitis described Winx winning the her father, Bob Ingham sponsored as phenomenal. To miss the start and fight back the way she did you would not have been upset if she had been beaten today, Kepitis said. She knows where the winning post is. She wants to win. She wants to do it for everyone. Foxplay gave the Waller stable the quinella and Winx s fans fearing the worst when she dashed to a huge lead. She has run a great race, Foxplay s rider Kerrin McEvoy said. She s obviously shown that she has come back in good order and she is in for a great preparation. Adam Hyeronimus, rider of Ecuador, came up with arguably the quote of the day after Ecuador; s good third. It would have been good if she [Winx] missed it by six lengths and Foxplay missed it by one length, he said. - Ray Thomas, The Daily Telegraph.

A GROUP 2 SECOND TO WINX IN A BRILLIANT RETURN BY FOXPLAY It's not often owners rejoice when running second, but the top notch effort by our Group 1 winning mare FOXPLAY to almost pull off "the impossible" and defeat the great WINX in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes on Saturday at Randwick, was an especially memorable day in racing, for all her "girls only" group of owners. FOXPLAY and Winx have become good companions for about a year now and as well as being stabled next to one another at Chris' Rosehill stables, they spelled together before this preparation and generally have a "the 2 of us " mentality these days. On Saturday at the races, it was "every girl for herself" however when the barriers opened in the 1,400 metres Warwick Stakes and as has been widely documented, WINX missed the start and the field was four lengths off and gone in front of her after only about 60 metres. The racing public nationally (and internationally as well if the truth be known) collectively held their breath as the mare got herself up and going, immediately giving Group 1 horses a 3-4 lengths start. Surely this might cause her a major problem. Our" little tiger" FOXPLAY settled in behind the leading duo after leaving the barrier well and she travelled sweetly for the first 600 metres of the race, before taking the rails run right at the point of the home turn when the leader rolled off the fence. When FOXPLAY and Kerrin McEvoy shot clear in the straight and at one time were almost a length and a half in front of the second horse, the high drama of the day gave those on course a sense of stunned disbelief that FOXPLAY just might hold off WINX who by then had angled to the middle of the track and was starting to power to the finish line. The question on everyone's lips was "will the finish post come too soon for her?" As we know the answer was no, because guided by the remarkable skill shown by Hugh Bowman, WINX was able to hurtle down the middle of the track to literally reach FOXPLAY two strides only from the winning post and win by a narrow margin. Never have non winning owners shown more elation to run second, as the owners of FOXPLAY recognised the tremendous effort by their great little mare to almost hold out WINX. On Sunday morning the two mares headed to the beach at Botany Bay for a stroll in the water, as both the owners of WINX and FOXPLAY relived a great race and a special memory; certainly one that we all won't forget quickly. Well done to all the FOXPLAY owners on a great performance by your much loved girl FOXY. Photo: The Daily Telegraph.

post race recovery at the beach for best mates winx & foxplay One of the big factors in the stable s success and the longevity of our horses is Chris s careful management and focus on post-race recovery. Heading to the beach on a Sunday after a tough run on Saturday is one of the many things we can do with the horses to aid their recovery so this week Winx and Foxplay headed to Botany Bay to wade through the soothing salt water. Not only is are there physical benefits, we all know what a dip in the ocean can do for the mind and body after a hard Saturday! Pictured is Ben Cadden on Winx and Ben de Paiva on Foxplay. Pictures by Sharon Chapman.

GEARING UP FOR SPRING - mccreery Heading into the spring carnival, we give some insight into the campaigns of some of our stable stars. Another talented galloper racing in Peter and Patty Tighe s now famous Magic Bloodstock colours is McCreery. One of the more expensive purchases from the Tattersall s Horses in Training Sale at 200,000 guineas, McCreery is well related being a half-brother to Group One winner and champion older male in Ireland Thistle Bird with both from the multiple stakes-winning French mare Dolma. Since his arrival down-under he s had 15 starts, winning on four occasions and placing on three to return $587,385 to date. A year ago he took out the Listed Rowley Mile before the Gr.3 Kingston Town Stakes with his other spring highlights being a Group One second to Le Romain in the Cantala at Flemington and another Group Three win being the Liverpool City Cup first up in February. Having had his second trial today at Warwick Farm, McCreery s first up run is likely to be in the Gr.2 Tramway Handicap on the 2nd of September followed by runs in the Gr.3 Bill Ritchie on the 16th and the million-dollar Gr.1 Epsom Handicap on the 30th of September. From there the Melbourne Carnival beckons where a race like the Gr.1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) is a possible target When it s allowed to shine through McCreery has an impressive turn of foot and we hope to see it unleashed this spring! McCreery at the Tattersall s Horses in Training Sale almost two years ago where he was selected by Mulcaster Bloodstock for the stable.

Alward spearheads Waller quartet Champion trainer Chris Waller brings a strong mixed bag to the table in Saturday s Pacific Boating Benchmark 82 Handicap (2000m) including a horse he says could be a lightweight chance in the Metrop. Waller said all four runners have claims for differing reasons on his weekly preview show Stable Talk but the market would indicate imported galloper Alward is his strongest chance, being the $2.65 favourite. Alward ventures to the Sydney races for the first time, having had his three Australian runs in Melbourne, the latest of which he scored an emphatic three length victory at Flemington on August 8. Alward. He couldn t have been any more impressive last start. He cleared out and won impressively, Waller said. He s a pretty bombproof horse, he does everything right, he s no fuss and it will be interesting to see how he progresses. He could be a lightweight chance in the Metrop if he keeps progressing but probably running out of time. He d need to keep winning to keep that dream alive. Hugh Bowman rides the bookies elect while Corey Brown remains aboard the $4.80 second favourite Vaucluse Bay, the winner of his two previous starts before failing last time as a $1.75 favourite when found after the race to have suffered from cardiac arrhythmia. Vaucluse Bay was sent back to the trials by stewards and came through that assignment last week. He seemed to trial well, it s hard to get a gauge on the stayers over those short trips but I was happy with what I saw and he s pulled up well, Waller said. Vaucluse Bay.

l He s remarkably held onto his weight very well so he s obviously coping and can bounce back. We ll probably just ride him a little more conservative, we ll look at getting a bit of cover on him. The stable s other two runners, Chatelard and Quick Defence come out of the same race which was won by Chatelard. The Star Thoroughbreds gelding is undefeated in three starts and bookies have the son of Rip Van Winkle on the third line of betting at $9. He s got a good draw and will get a lovely run, Waller said. We keep saying he ll probably go to the paddock after each run but he keeps coming through his race really well so each time he goes to the races we re lifting the bar. He s had everything go his way in his races but in saying that that s what winners do, they just keep improving and they make things look easy. He s certainly doing that and will certainly be hard to beat again on Saturday but I do respect that it s a stronger grade. Quick Defence, another imported galloper, produced the flashing light run behind Chatelard at Canterbury on August 16. His third placing was his fifth placing from seven runs this preparation but the fact remains it s been 394 days since his last win and on Saturday is $14. He was beaten by Chatelard last start but this was the horse to follow from the race, Waller said. He hasn t had a lot of luck through bad draws and racing style. Now we ve found a racing style for him, he gets back and finishes off and he s certainly racing well. I think the big track, the extra 100m and the possibility of being a pair closer should see him hard to beat down in the weights. - Racenet.com.au Chatelard.
