REGISTRATION. All goats, except market wethers, market does and commercial does, must be registered purebred, fullblood or percentage blood Boer goats in the herd book of the American Boer Goat Association before the opening date of the Fair. Original registration certificates are required to be presented at show check-in, except that a copy of a registration application, stamped with the date received by the association, can be accepted for kids less than three (3) months of age. Animals over the age of three (3) months must have the original registration certificate in had at the time of show. Animals must be registered in the name of the exhibitor. Exhibitor is defined as the owner of the animal on its registry certificate. Exhibitors that are entering an animal in which the registration certificate names another family, farm or partnership member please contact the Boer Goat Superintendent to obtain instructions on providing supporting documentation. Proof of birth date will be the date on the registration certificate. Please use the exact information from the registry certificate to complete your entry form. 1

2 IOWA STATE FAIR * AUGUST 10-20, 2017 * BOER GOAT All goats must be appropriately identified and comply with USDA Scrapie Eradication Program Guidelines. Call USDA TAG ( ) or visit the following website for more information: TATTOOS. All goats must have legible tattoos consistent with the registration certificate or the animal will be disqualified. If an animal is disqualified due to illegible or inconsistent tattoos, all lower placing animals will be moved up in placement. Point winners from each class must have their tattoos read and recorded. The judge will be responsible for ensuring that tattoos are read and properly recorded. The Superintendent will be responsible for recording the tattoos and informing the judge as to which point-eligible goats will need to be checked. The permanent identification must match the registration paper. No tattooing allowed after unloading. If the animal has a microchip as its permanent identification, the exhibitor is responsible for providing a microchip reader. 17. OWNERSHIP. It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to refrain from presenting any animal owned by the presiding judge within 90 days prior to the show date. ES 18. COMPUTING AGES. Birth dates, as listed on the registration certificate, will be used in determining class divisions. In order to calculate the class breaks, take the show date and count back to the birth date to determine the age and the class for the animal. For example, for a December 1 show, an animal with a January 1 birth date would be eleven (11) months old and would show in a kid class. 19. ENTRIES PER. Each exhibitor may show no more than two animals in each class with the exception of market and commercial doe classes. In the market and commercial doe classes up to four animals may be shown per exhibitor. No animals shall be changed from one class to another after entry deadline unless it is ineligible for the class in which it is entered. 20. SUBSTITUTIONS. Substitutions are allowed in the same class only and must have same ownership as the original entry. Substitutions will be made at check in. 21. DIVISION ELIGIBILITY. Percentage doe classes are for goats 50% to 88%, Purebred/Fullblood classes are for does that are 93.75% and higher; 96.87% and higher for bucks. Bucks 96.86% and lower are not eligible to be shown. Progeny of fresh does will not be allowed in the ring with their dam. The Champion and the Reserve Champion classes will be chosen from the first and second place animals in that division. The Division Champions will be selected from the first place winners of the individual classes. The Reserve Division Champions will be selected from the remaining first place class winners of the individual classes plus the second place winner of the class from which the Division Champion was chosen. The Grand Champion will be selected from the Division Champions. The Reserve Grand Champion will be selected from the remaining Division Champions plus the Reserve Division Champion from which the Grand Champion was chosen. 22. JUDGING. At the discretion of the judge and superintendent, goats may be turned loose in the ring as a function of judging. 23. COMMERCIAL ES. Commercial classes are for Boer does that are not eligible to be registered in the herd book of the AGBA. Animals that have ABGA tattoos will be ineligible for these classes with the exception of the use of an approved tattoo in an effort to comply with the USDA Scrapie Eradication Program identification requirements. Commercial does will be judged as breeding animals and can be fitted at the discretion of the exhibitor. An exhibitor s entry form must include complete and accurate information. This includes noting the date of birth and tag number(s) for each doe entered. Animals that are less than 12 months of age must have their milk teeth. All commercial does will be weighed and teeth will be checked at show check-in to verify the reasonableness of the age reported on the entry form. Commercial doe entries will be disqualified if the Superintendent determines that the exhibitor materially misrepresented the information on the entry form. Entries will be broken into classes at the discretion of the Superintendent. 24. MARKET ES. All market animals will be weighed in at show check in with a minimum acceptable weight of 40 pounds. Market animals will be broken into classes based on weights taken at weigh in time. There will be goats per class. All market animals must have their milk teeth. No adult teeth allowed. Market does will be judged similar to the market wether class. The market doe class is not a breeding class. 25. All market and commercial animals must be identified with either an Individual Scrapie Flock of Origin identification tag and/or 4-H/FFA tag. This scrapie tag and/or 4-H/FFA tag must be listed on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection and entry form. 26. Goats showing in market doe classes are not eligible to also show in breeding doe classes. Goats showing in the commercial doe classes are not eligible to show in the market or ABGA classes. 27. SHOWMANSHIP. Exhibitors can participate in Showmanship Classes during the Meat Goat Show. Showmanship entries will be divided into classes based on age as of January 1, 2017 and in accordance with IMGA age breaks. Exhibitors can sign up for these classes during check in. The State Fair will not provide premiums or awards for these classes. Private donations may be accepted for awards. FITTING 28. No powdering, painting, artificial coloring or external application of any substance (irritant, counterirritant, or similar substance) which could affect the animal s performance or alter its natural contour, confirmation or appearance will be allowed. The use of adhesives is permitted. 29. All market wethers and market does must be uniformly clipped with 3/8 length of hair or less above the knee and hock joints, to include the head, excluding the tail, prior to arrival on the grounds. DISQUALIFICATION 30. Any goat showing any pronounced defect or abnormality, such as a weak constitution, unthrifty condition, overshot jaw or undershot jaw, abnormal abscesses, will be barred from showing in any of the classes. Illegible tattoos or tattoos inconsistent with registration will result in disqualification. Identification tag(s) on market wethers inconsistent with entry form and Certificate of Veterinary Inspection will result in disqualification. Any doe over 24 months of age that has not kidded and cannot prove a current pregnancy will not be allowed to show. 31. All bucks must be kept as odor free as possible. If a buck is deemed to be an odor problem and/or hazard by the Superintendent, the buck must be removed from the Fairgrounds. 32. BRACING. No animal bracing is allowed. Goats front legs must be on the ground during judging. Front feet must remain on the arena floor during Judge s evaluation. Exhibitors may lift feet off the ground for a period not to exceed 10 seconds when posing the goat (per ABGA Rules). The Superintendent, judge or designated ring staff reserve the right to disqualify any exhibitor for bracing. 33. Muzzling of animals is prohibited. 34. NONCOMPLIANCE. Noncompliance to show rules will result in dismissal from the show. 2
