1 WEEK 8 February 25 - March 1, 2015 EDITOR: JENNIFER WOOD Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Fibonacci 17 Capture $372,000 Suncast CSI 5* Grand Prix Victory Janko van de Lageweg Bringing VDL Horses to the WEF Sport Horse Auction Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Fibonacci 17 jumped to a huge win in the $372,000 Suncast Grand Prix CSI 5*. Lindsay Brock/Jennifer Wood Media, Inc. The 2015 WEF Sport Horse Auction is on February 26 - don t miss it! Germany s Meredith Michaels- Beerbaum and Fibonacci 17 were the winners in Saturday night s $372,000 Suncast CSI 5* Grand Prix in week seven of the 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). Jumping under the lights of the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC), Michaels-Beerbaum and the 10-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding (For Feeling x Corland) won a six-horse jump-off, with Danielle Goldstein (ISR) and Carisma in second, and Jessica Springsteen (USA) with Vindicat W third. Forty-four entries showed over Steve Stephens (USA) course Saturday night with six advancing to the jump-off and only two double clear rounds. First to go in the jump-off were Emanuel Andrade (VEN) and Hard Rock Z. Going for the slower clear round, they finished in seconds, but had an unfortunate four faults for sixth place. Goldstein and Israeli Equestrian Partners Carisma were the first pair to clear the short course in seconds and eventually took second place honors. Michaels- Beerbaum went next with Fibonacci 17 and completed the only other double clear round in a faster time of seconds, but had to wait three more rounds to settle the victory. Georgina Bloomberg (USA) and Gotham Enterprizes LLC s Lilli took down the final fence to place fifth with four faults in seconds. Springsteen and Stone Hill Farm s Vindicat W followed, and although they completed the fastest round of the night in seconds, the pair finished third with one rail down. Last to go, Beezie Madden (USA) and Abigail Wexner s Cortes C were poised to win with their time of seconds, but the pair also had a late rail at the final fence to place fourth. A three-time FEI World Cup Finals champion and one of the best female riders in the world, Meredith Michaels- Beerbaum has had many wins at the Winter Equestrian Festival throughout the years, but Saturday night marked one of her biggest. The rider has had great results with Fibonacci 17 all circuit and was thrilled to get a major victory with the talented gelding. He has been jumping brilliantly since he got here to Florida, but I have had the unlucky rail down in the two grand prixs that I have ridden him in, Michaels-Beerbaum stated. I knew he was in great form, but he is a new The 2015 Sport Horse Auction will be held on February 26 at 7 pm at The Stadium at PBIEC. The auction will showcase some of the elite show jumpers and hunters from VDL Stud in the Netherlands. We spoke with Janko about the horses, the auction, and what people can expect. Weekly Wire: What type of horses are you bringing to the 2015 auction? Describe a few. Janko: This year we brought a group of horses for the auction that is different from years past. There will be a selection of horses of different ages and experience levels, and it is also the first time we are bringing a group of older horses. The four-year olds are very high quality and we picked the best group of horses for their age group at our stud. All of the five-year-olds have show experience including Fabriano VDL, an approved KWPN Stallion by Casall x Chin Chin. He is an excellent jumper, but in our opinion would excel as a hunter. Many of the six-year-olds have varying experience in the show ring. Enni VDL (Caretano x Chin Chin) has a lot of potential, but is green for her age. We decided to bring horses that would fit into every category a potential buyer could want, and we think the group of seven-year-olds is truly world-class. VDL Dolonie H has been showing the 1.30m and is ready to move up as well as VDL Deborah, and VDL De Beers. VDL Casanova, the eight-year-old, has competed at the 1.40m and is extremely easy to ride with a lot of scope. WW: What qualities do you hope clients will see in the VDL stock to be auctioned this year? JVDL: This year it is a group of horses that suits what riders, trainers, and owners are looking for horses of each discipline, whether that is jumpers, equitation, or hunter prospects. These horses can be ridden by amateurs, juniors, young riders, or be successful in the international jumper ring. Please turn to page 15 Please turn to page 6

2 Hollow Creek Farm Proudly Showcases the Next Generation with Children s, Junior, and Young Rider Nations Cups For the third consecutive year, the Hollow Creek Farm Nations Cup Series will spotlight the next generation of show jumping superstars through its Children s, Junior and Young Riders Nations Cup program. Having proved extremely popular the past two seasons, the program gives younger competitors from around the globe an opportunity to come together and experience team pressure and camaraderie by competing in their own marquee Nations Cup events. On Saturday, February 28, three separate Nations Cup team events will be held at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, Florida. Following the same style as the senior Nations Cup, a featured event at the Winter Equestrian Festival since 2002, teams of four riders each, with the best three scores counting, will represent their countries in the Nations Cup events for Children, Junior, and Young Riders. And like their senior counterparts, the youngsters have their own cheering sections that are just as vocal, if not more so. Holding inspirational signage and waving flags to show their support, national pride comes out in full-force amongst the audience members who AutismSpeaks.org have travelled from various parts of the world to be in Wellington, Florida. The event is so much fun, as well as a valuable learning experience for all the young people who participate, said Angel Karolyi, who competes several grand prix horses for Hollow Creek Farm. It encourages great team spirit, and the crowd really gets into it, cheering for their favorite countries like it is the Olympics! It is a great way for these young competitors to get a taste of what possibly lies ahead in their riding careers. The first round of each Nations Cup competition will be held in the International Arena during Saturday afternoon, with the second round being held at night under the lights. In the evening session, the Children s Nations Cup for riders aged 12 to 14 will be held first, followed by the Junior Nations Cup for riders aged 14 to 18. The Young Riders Nations Cup will be Saturday s third and final team competition, featuring competitors aged 16 to 21. Aspiring young athletes from a dozen different nations competed in the 2014 edition of the Children, Junior and Young Riders Nations Cup competitions, gaining invaluable skills for the future by launch relocate expand develop in the perfect business climate It s time you considered moving your business to Palm Beach County, one of the most globally competitive business climates: Low taxes, affordable commercial and residential real estate, easy access to three international airports, in a state with no personal income tax. Team USA took home top honors for the second year in a row by winning the Young Rider Nations Cup while Team Brazil did the same in the Junior Nations Cup competition. Meanwhile, Mexico upset defending champion Brazil by posting a perfect score of zero to capture the Children s Nations Cup title. Brazil, Mexico and the USA are all back to defend their titles, but there will be no shortage of competition, as a total of 12 nations are fielding teams in this year s Hollow Creek Nations Cup events. Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Ireland, Mexico, Puerto Rico, USA, and Venezuela will all be fighting to stand on the top step of the podium. The idea is to begin to set the groundwork for young riders to compete together as a team, explained Karolyi, a veteran of Nations Cup and major games competition. The Hollow Creek Nations Cup Series gives them the opportunity to experience the team format before they reach the top levels of international competition. It is very important to expose these young riders to the responsibility of not only performing well for yourself, but for others who are relying on you. Hollow Creek Farm is home to Emanuel Andrade, one of the sport s brightest stars and living proof of the valuable experience that can be gained from competing in a Nations Cup format. Andrade competed in the Hollow Creek Junior Nations Cup for his native Venezuela in both the inaugural 2013 event as well as in Incredibly, just six short months later, he was competing at the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France, before he had even celebrated his 18th birthday. With the Hollow Creek Nations Cup Series truly acting as a springboard to international competition, this year Andrade will be representing Venezuela on the senior Nations Cup team on Friday night at the Winter Equestrian Festival. While the Nations Cup events bring teams together, Hollow Creek Farm will also sponsor special Children s, Junior, and Young Riders Classics on Thursday, February 26, for individual honors. Where do you see your participation going in the future? JVDL: We have a great partnership with Equestrian Sport Productions and their team, and I am looking forward to working with them on this auction for many more years together. For our team at VDL, it is a great way to promote our horses and even more importantly, it gives us an opportunity to get high quality horses to owners, riders, and trainers in the U.S. (WEF) is the largest show in the world, and we are very honored to be a part of it. WW: How do you feel about the success of VDL horses sold in the past auctions? What type of feedback have you received? What do you think of the success of the auction as a whole? JVDL: The auction has been very successful for us so far. We have received a lot of very good feedback and great results from horses sold in earlier auctions. A lot of people who have participated in the auction in years past come back and for new horses from us, which is a great sign of the quality we are producing. Alpha VDL owned by Mrs. Eva Castagren and ridden by Darragh Kenny had two Grand Prix wins last year. Dakota VDL, owned by Hyperion Stud, won the final of the 6-year-old class last year at WEF. G&C Clemenza, owned by G&C Farm, won the 5-year-old final here in Wellington last year. These are just some of the horses who have done well, and I think it proves that the horses we bring to these auctions are great quality and past buyers have enjoyed a lot of success with them. WW: What makes VDL horses superior in terms of sport horse quality? JVDL: At VDL we always and will continue to use very good mares with the best motherliness. We always search for new bloodlines that will cross well with the bloodlines we already have. This way, we try to get a standard of breeding that is as high as possible. When the horses are still young and at VDL, we select the ones we believe have the most potential and begin to work with them. Breeding and sport is all a matter of trying to get the best you have to the top. WW: How do buyers in the United States differ from buyers in Europe? JVDL: I don t think there is as much difference as people say. In Europe, there are a lot more young horse classes than there are here in the U.S., but everyone always has the same goals of looking for great sport horses. The only thing that is very popular here and not so much at home is the hunters and equitation, so we have to carefully select the horses we feel will be suitable for those disciplines. WW: There has been a lot of anticipation leading up to this year s auction. What are you looking forward to in regards to the 2015 WEF auction? JVDL: I am really looking forward to this year s auction. I think it is a great group of horses available. I am really looking forward to these horses being successful with new riders because that is what this is really about. The fine VDL horses will be available for viewing at Ossian Ventures on February from noon to 6 pm. Please contact Mr. Janko van de Lageweg at or to set up an appointment. The dressage horses are also available for trial by contacting Mrs. Rhegan White at or white@ westfalenpferde.de. Horse photos, videos, and the registration information can be found at Molly Sewell piloted David Matisz LLC s horse, Casparo, to championship honors in the Pre-Green Hunter Level 1 on Thursday. Casparo earned two firsts and two thirds over fences, along with a second place finish in the under saddle. Remaining consistent over the two days of competition, Marksman and Christopher Payne finished the day as reserve champions. The pair earned a first and two seconds over fences. Although this week was only Casparo s fourth horse show, the sixyear-old Warmblood looked like a veteran in the ring. He [Casparo] has been champion or first and second every time we have shown him. He always rises to the occasion, Sewell noted. On Friday afternoon, Reilly Gogul riding Shaun Clark s pony, Neon Star, topped the USEF Pony Medal. Gogul gave Neon Star lots of her favorite treats, mints, after her winning round. Second place honors went to Natalie Jayne riding Cleverist, owned by Daisy Farish. Tessa Brown and Land s End Lady Slipper finished in the third spot, and Gwyneth Babington and Maranatha Poet rounded out the top four. Gogul, the nine-year-old equestrian from Chagrin Falls, OH, won first place Hunter and Equitation Winners Shine at WEF 7 her first time doing the pony equitation. Last year Gogul did the Short Stirrup once during WEF, but was ready to move up this year with Neon Star. She s [Neon Star] perfect! exclaimed Gogul. Ring 8 competition started Saturday morning with the Taylor Harris Insurance Services (THIS) Children s Medal 14 and under. The class consists of a first round where each trip receives a score, followed by a test of the riders with the four highest scores. After 26 horse and rider combinations completed the first round, Chloe Doherty, Kathryn Hall, Sloan Hopson, and Catalina Peralta were called back to test. Doherty, from Chester, NJ, and her own horse, Canada, returned to test with a score of 81, but after a smooth test emerged victorious. Finishing in second place, with a first round score of 84, was Hall riding Prosecco 24. Hopson ended the day in third, and Peralta rounded out the top four. On the final day of competition for WEF 7, Natalie Jayne, from Elgin, IL, rode Daisy Farish s pony, Cleverist, to championship honors in the Medium Pony Hunters. The pair won the two over fences classes on Saturday, as well as the first over fences class on Sunday and the under saddle. Cleverist has been going great, and today the courses rode really nicely, trainer Patricia Griffith explained. Emma Kurtz piloted GC Ponies entry, Elegance, to the reserve championship prize. Elegance earned two seconds and two thirds over fences over the two days of competition. Jayne started riding Cleverist in September, but did not make their show ring debut until the beginning of the WEF circuit. She [Jayne] is still getting to know him [Cleverist], and this week she was able to put all the rounds together, remarked Griffith after the championship presentation. Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Fibonacci 17 Continued from Page 1 horse for me. I have had him less than a year. At this time last year he was jumping 1.40m classes, so he has made a big step up into the big league. I was fine-tuning some small details with him and changed the bridle a little bit for tonight and that seemed to be perfection. The course itself was very difficult, so I was very pleased with how he handled everything today, Michaels-Beerbaum noted. I have done very few jump-offs with him in fact, so I was also pleased with how he handled the speed and turns. In general he was a dream tonight. Fibonacci has quickly risen to stardom for his incredible jumping ability and he showed that off under the lights with some impressive jumps. He is actually a Swedish-bred horse, although he has a German father and a Dutch mother, Michaels-Beerbaum detailed. He was born in Sweden, so the Swedish take great pride in that fact. I got him in May last year. He has a different style than most horses. He jumps with his head up and a little bit straight in his back. That is something I have decided I cannot change and that is why I was trying to finesse the bridle a little so I could help him without interrupting his jump. I felt like I did that in the last grand prix, so I was very pleased with tonight. He is an amazing jumper, she continued. I think he won the high jump award over most of the fences in the course tonight. It can often be difficult to sit on as a rider, but I have been practicing that as well. He is different, but he is wonderful. Michaels-Beerbaum was at the ingate watching as the final round of Beezie Madden and Cortes C solidified her victory. She commented, I have to say, I expected Beezie to beat me, particularly with Cortes. He is her best horse, and I was really surprised when he hit the last fence. Sometimes the luck goes your way, and it was with me tonight. The rider was also very happy to get a win for Fibonacci s owners, Jim and Kristy Clark, at Artemis Equestrian Farm LLC mariamendelsohn.com They are absolutely delighted because they supported me, she acknowledged. We had a discussion last year at this time and they said, Listen, we ll support you and go find some good horses. Fibonacci was the first horse we purchased and to have him win here tonight is just phenomenal. It is a really exciting and emotional win tonight. Danielle Goldstein was also very happy with her second place finish in the class aboard Carisma, a 16-year-old Swedish Warmblood mare (Cardento 933 x Maraton 600). Saturday night gave Goldstein the biggest finish of her career and a memorable moment in her partnership with the mare. I was thrilled actually, Goldstein stated. To be honest, I have been watching a lot of video of Meredith recently. To be second was amazing. The horse really felt spectacular today. I have been working on going a bit faster, so to be able to be second was amazing. This is for sure my best finish, Goldstein added. I have been riding here since I was a little kid and always wanted to be in the grand prixs and do well, and I think this was a huge second for me. I really could not be happier. Although one rail came down for Jessica Springsteen in the jump-off, she was happy with a great night with Vindicat W. I was a little worried, Springsteen admitted after the class. The last two grand prixs, we struggled a bit. He had a bit of time off and I feel like he is starting to get back into the groove of things, so I was really happy. Detailing her jump-off round, Springsteen explained, I was pretty neat back to fence two and then I thought I was quick over the double, but then I kind of hooked him right in anticipation of that turn. I should have given him a little more of a chance there. We were pretty quick to the last fence, and he was really good there. I was lucky. 10 Palm Beach Community Rallies to Aid Haitian Orphans, Hosts Annual Special Olympics and Luncheon at PBIEC Show jumping idols from all corners of the world are commonplace in Wellington during the winter months, but in a few days a new kind of hero will make her way to South Florida. Her name is Darlene Milford, and her beginnings were meager. Milford was born in 1987 with a condition known as Hemiplegia damage to one side of the brain affecting the right side of her body. Abandoned by her family at seven, she has spent the majority of her life in Haitian orphanages. But, for the last ten years, has made a spring pilgrimage to Wellington for the annual Special Olympics County Games and benefit luncheon at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. This year, Milford celebrates her 10th anniversary as a representing member of The Chateaublond Equestrian Center in Haiti and was the only rider that could obtain the appropriate passports to make the journey to the U.S. PBIEC has joined forces with NPH USA, formerly Friends of the Orphans, which transforms the lives of orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children with homes, healthcare and educational programs, making a positive impact in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through this partnership and the birth of The Chateaublond Equestrian Center orphan riding program, the March 8 event aims to put faces to the troubling state of impoverished orphans in underprivileged countries. With growing success each year, Program Director Romy Tschudi-Roy grows even more encouraged. In an effort to change the perception of what it means to be handicapped in a poor country, Tschudi-Roy aims to prove that handicapped people have a right to have a good life. From her very first lesson at Chateaublond, Milford showed great determination and courage her physical handicap did not seem to deter her from furthering her riding. With the help of her riding program connections, she has become something of a celebrity in Haiti, according to Gena Heraty of Special Needs Programs, NPFS, Haiti. In 2009, Milford was even honored with an FEI award from Princess Haya. When most people think about Haiti they think of poverty, political unrest, the Earthquake, Cholera- usually sad images quickly come to mind. If you were to say to those people, Let me tell you the story of a girl that was abandoned at the age of seven and went on to meet a princess, they would probably throw their eyes up to heaven and say, Yeah right as if, said Heraty. Amazingly, Darlene s story is not a fairytale. The shy little girl that first came to the orphanage has grown into a confident young woman that is a wonderful ambassador not only for our riding program, but for all of Haiti. Milford continues to ride every week in Haiti and works in a special education school as a teaching assistant. According to Heraty, she loves to sing, dance and is very good at embroidery. We started the riding program because we wanted to give children with disabilities a chance to get on a horse and ride. We knew it would be good for them, but we had no idea just how good, she said. Darlene s story is a beautiful one. Just as beautiful are the stories of those with more severe disabilities than hers. Those that come from the poorest areas in Port Au Prince, up on those horses, they are all princes and princesses. The Special Olympics benefit luncheon will take place March 8 at 12pm in The Wellington Club and include a silent auction with live show jumping being featured in the International Arena. Tables of six are available for $400 and individual ticket $70. One hundred percent of the funds raised during the luncheon will be dispersed to Haitian causes through the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund. 11 American-Bred: Signal Hill & Sunset Hill Signal Hill and Sunset Hill are BFFs and winners at WEF. Photo Sportfot. If you see two matching chestnut geldings strutting their stuff at WEF, you re not seeing double. You re probably watching Signal Hill, owned by Daphne Richards, and Sunset Hill, owned by Jacqueline Stahl Thorne. Full brothers bred by Diana Dodge of Nokomis Farms in Montpelier Station, Vermont, the pair are currently in training with the Caristo Family and winning their fair share of tricolors after just one year of competition experience. Both geldings Nob Hill x Acclaim x Northern Raja have been together since their birth just one year apart at Dodge s 40-year-old breeding program. Read on for the story of these two young geldings as told by breeder Diana Dodge and rider Heather Caristo-Williams: WW: Describe the history of these Nob Hill babies? DD: It all started with their great grandfather Sir Thomas. Many years ago, I was looking for a stallion and I was told that I had to go see this horse with four white feet at Keeneland. I went to the auction, out came Tom and we stopped dead in our tracks. He did everything you could possibly want a horse to do. HCW: Both horses came from Angel Lopez at a fox hunting barn called Duhallow Farm in Millbrook, New York. He found them from Diana and broke them, perfecting them on the flat and over fences. When it was time for them to further their career in the show ring, we were asked to help them out in getting them some mileage. Daphne and Jacqueline who rode at Duhallow purchased them and sent them to us at the end of summer From there, we started them in their respective pregreen divisions. WW: What qualities do you look for when breeding? DD: I started breeding mostly conformation horses. I am partial to the Thoroughbred breeding they have good brains, aren t spooky and I love the quality. WW: What similarities do you see in both horses? HCW: They are very similar. They both have lovely movement and a gorgeous canter with natural rhythm and a great jump. They are more alike than any two horses I have encountered. Outside the ring, they are incredibly sweet. Being big-bodied horses, some have a tendency to walk all over you when they are young, but not these ones they have manners and are really laid back. Angel did such a fantastic job raising them and when you see them in action you would never expect that they have only been showing for a year. WW: What are the highlights of their career so far? HCW: Signal Hill [foaled in 2008] was Circuit Champion at WEF in the 2014 Baby Greens and Reserve Champion in the Pre-Greens at HITS Saugerties this summer. Sunset Hill [foaled in 2009] was Circuit Champion in the 3&4 Year Old Pre- Greens at WEF and HITS Saugerties in 2014, as well as the Top American-Bred at the Pre-Green Incentive in Kentucky. WW: What does it mean to successfully show American-bred horses? HCW: We are so proud of them. I believe that it is very competitive with all the Warmbloods that are being imported every day, but I see the hunter style in the show ring changing towards the more classic and it s nice to know that when I go in the ring I m on one of the more classic style hunters. I am so lucky to have such great owners in Daphne and Jacqueline who trust me with their wonderful horses. WW: As a breeder, what is your reaction to seeing two homebreds still together? DD: I am delighted. I didn t have a great riding and training program at home at the time they were born, so I knew they were going to be great with Angel and he proved me right by doing a wonderful job with them. 13 Faces of WEF: Jennifer Glosson A native Floridian and lifelong horsewoman, Equestrian Sport Productions Office Manager Jennifer Glosson was destined for the horse show business. But, it took her a little while to get here. From her first pony at eight years old to showing hunters and now working with the best in international horse sport, she didn t answer her professional calling immediately. After working as a hair dresser for 14 years, Glosson set foot on the grounds of a horse show to watch a friend s daughter ride and her life took a turn. As soon as I set foot back on that property I thought, I can t believe I have denied myself this for so long! she admitted. Once you grow up in this world, you always love it. The Weekly Wire caught up with Glosson in her home away from home; the WEF Horse Show Office: WW: What is your background with horses? JG: My parents always dreamed about having land and when we bought five acres, we got horses and knew nothing about them. I started riding western Preferred Realtor of WEF 8 until I went to an english barn with a girlfriend of mine. I was hooked and started riding hunters from that point on. I was a mediocre rider, but I loved it the people, friendships, and just being around the horses. I used to ride my first pony to my friend s house, turn him out, play all day, and come home at dusk. WW: What got you started in the horse show business? JG: While a hair dresser, I had a customer that sent her daughter to a summer riding camp, and she invited me to their horse show. That is when I realized I wanted to make a career out of this passion. I sent out resumes to every horse show manager I could find and David Burton Sr. called me back and hired me for the office in Littlewood before there was an ESP. I moved to Wellington and when Mark [Bellissimo] purchased Littlewood, he asked if I wanted to run his office and I have been doing it since WW: If not horse shows, what would you be doing? JG: Your job. Definitely something with public relations or graphic design where it is computer-related, but I can still have contact with people. WW: What would the average horse show exhibitor not know about you? JG: I just recently started playing tennis. I spend a lot of time in the Keys fishing and enjoying Florida. It will be interesting to see what happens with the expansion of Colorado and Tryon, but I love Wellington and at this moment I can t picture being anywhere else. WW: Describe your ultimate horse show Monday. JG: Staying in my pajamas all day. WW: What s the best part of this job? JG: I am so passionate about this sport and getting to work with people I used to idolize and develop personal relationships with them is the best part. Also, I couldn t Jennifer Glosson do my job without the amazing office team that I have. They are incredible to work with, and I think we have created a positive environment where people like their job. It s a good vibe. $500 Groom s Class sponsored by Shapley s Grooming Products plus $50 trainer bonus Held last Friday of every month during the WEF Friday, February 27, at 3pm in ring 8 (or 7/8 schooling area) Cash and prizes awarded to top 3 grooms with a $50 bonus awarded to trainer of winning groom. Ribbons through 6 th Which path would you rather be on right now?
